Do you know that forests cover an estimated 38 percent of the total land surface of the European Union (EU) And that these extensive areas covered with trees and underbrush need to be protected so they can continue to do good for the environment for the next generation Now the EU has just come up with is ambitious new “Forest Strategy”.
Forests can fight against climate change and prevent biodiversity loss They can reduce the impacts of climate change by cooling down cities, protecting us from heavy flooding, and reducing drought impacts. They are valuable ecosystems that are home to a major part of the world’s plants and animals. But forests also improve our health and well-being through functions like water regulation, erosion (侵蚀) control and air purification. And they serve as ideal settings for “recreation, relaxation and learning, as well as securing livelihoods”.
This new European- wide forest conservation vision takes in an impressive commitment to plant a minimum of three billion additional trees over the next decade. This is an ambitious plan but a long overdue one because forests have been battered by severe weather and human impacts, particularly the demand for wood over the last ten years. As the EU Observer puts it, “extreme weather events and the increasing demand for forest services and products, driven by wood-based bioenergy and international trade, have accelerated tree cover loss in the last decade.”
This EU strategy takes into account the complexity of; forest sustainability. Observation, knowledge exchange, ongoing monitoring and close cooperation between public and private organizations and individuals are also key elements in this new continent- wide forest protection strategy.
This is a future- focused blueprint, designed to protect these precious green areas, and ensure that the trees and greenery are here to stay!

The newly-elected president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro says that his country should withdraw (退出) from the 2015 Paris Agreement, and that Brazil’s rainforest protections are standing in the way of economic success. During the election campaign, he promised to ease protections for areas of the Brazilian Amazon set aside for native people and wildlife. Are Brazil’s rainforests in danger
The Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, is called “the lungs of the planet.” Each tree takes in and stores carbon dioxide from the air around it. Billions of trees pull up water through their roots and release water vapor into the air, forming tiny drops of water. The Amazon creates 30 to 50 percent of its own rainfall. Carlos Nobre, a climate scientist, says that it is almost impossible to say Just how important the rainforest is to the planet’s living systems.
Some of Bolsonaro’s support comes from business and farming groups. One supporter, Luiz Carlos, noted that farmers “are not invaders, they are producers.” He blamed the past government for supporting rainforest protections at the cost of farmers. “Brazil,” he said, “will be the biggest farming nation on Earth during Bolsonaro’s years.”
Paulo Artaxo, a professor of environmental physics at the University of Sao Paulo, says that if Bolsonaro keeps his campaign promises, then “deforestation of the Amazon will probably increase quickly — and the effects will be felt everywhere on the planet.”
Other scientists warn that if the Amazon and other tropical rainforests lose too many trees, this could affect rainfall in other areas. Without enough trees to support the rainfall, the longer and bigger dry season could turn more than half of the rainforest into a tropical grassland.
5.The first paragraph is intended to ________.
A.draw people’s attention to the disappearing rainforests

Two protection groups successfully removed the invading (入侵的) European rabbits from the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve (HPNR). These rabbits destroyed the habitats for the Humboldt penguins and Peruyian petrels (海燕) on the two islands of the HPNR, which are home to 80 percent of Humboldt penguins in the world and were once home to 100,000 pairs of Peruvian petrels. However, the protection groups couldn’t have completed the task without the help of a four-legged friend, Finn — a yellow dog trained to discover holes of the invading rabbits.
Due to their good sense of smell, dogs have become rising stars in searching for invasive animals, protecting wildlife and assisting scientists in their field work. Finn is an example of how dogs can make a big difference to environmental protection by speeding up searches or finding targets that humans can’t find. In this case, Finn played a key role in protecting the habitats of penguins and petrels. It used its good sense of smell to aid the field team in ensuring that the HPNR was entirely free of rabbits.
The rabbits ate certain plants which provided shade for baby penguins, and they also took over the holes that petrels use to nest. Thanks to the efforts of Finn and the people of the protection groups, the HPNR was free of the invading rabbits. Thus the penguins and petrels have their habitats back. Meanwhile, since completing the removal, plants there have grown better. Scientists have recorded 16 types of plants that have never been identified on the islands!
“No wonder Finn is called a ‘Wonder Dog’. It has a very good sense of smell,” states Karen, who worked alongside Finn. “It’s able to determine the position of a rabbit from long distances by sniffing (嗅,闻). Without it, we can only rely on our eyes to spot the invading rabbits hidden there.
9.What does the underlined part “the task” in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Protecting the habitats from being destroyed. B.Helping the rabbits hunt for more food.
C.Assisting scientists in doing biological research. D.Building more nests for baby penguins.
10.In what way do rabbits cause harm to the HPNR
A.Frightening some penguins. B.Producing much waste.
C.Killing penguins and petrels. D.Occupying nests.
11.How does Finn know the position of a rabbit from far away
A.By looking. B.By listening.
C.By smelling. D.By hiding somewhere.
12.What is the best title for the text
A.How Smart Finn Is B.How HPNR Was Well Protected
C.How Rabbits Were Killed D.How Penguins Get Love from Finn

Carbon Footprint: Definition & Facts
You know you leave a footprint when you walk around with wet foot. ____13____ This lesson will teach you what a carbon footprint is, what causes carbon footprints, and what you can do to reduce your carbon footprint.
What is a carbon footprint
____14____ Most scientists believe that carbon dioxide and other gases like it are contributing to global warming or the slow climate change of our planet. Global warning causes lots of problems for animals and people.
____15____
Electricity
People use electricity in their homes to turn on lights, plug in(接通电源)kitchen appliances like a microwave, and even watch TV or play video games. When you use electricity in your home, you are not creating carbon dioxide, but the power plants that create your electricity do emit carbon dioxide. Power plants that use coal for energy create the most carbon dioxide.
The Environmental protection Agency (EPA) says that electricity is responsible for the largest part of most carbon footprints.
Gas Heating
____16____ Most homes use oil, natural gas, or electricity to heat their home in the winter, and all of theses sources create carbon dioxide. The amount of carbon dioxide that each family uses depends on how high they run the heat and what kind of fuel they use.
Cars
Cars are another thing that contributes to your carbon footprint. ____17____ Other forms of transportation, like buses, trains, and planes, also increase a carbon footprint.
A.Causes of carbon footprint.
B.But what is a carbon footprint
C.Ways to reduce your carbon footprint.
D.The car you use would lead to climate change.
E.This happens because the gas that your car uses to run produces carbon dioxide.
F.The EPA says that gas heating is the second largest source of carbon dioxide emission.
G.Every time you use a fossil fuel, like coal or gas, you create a gas called carbon dioxide.

Is Tap Water Safe to Drink
Tap water is not without its problems. More recently, the Michigan City of Flint has been struggling with high lead(铅) levels in its drinking water. Over the years people have witnessed major __1__of groundwater pollution leading to unhealthy tap water.
The nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG) detected some 260 pollutants in public water supplies in 42 states and faulted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for __2__ to establish standards on so many of the pollutants - from industry, agriculture, and urban rivers - that do end up in our water.
Despite these seemingly __3__ statistics, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), which has also conducted a series of __4__ tests on municipal(市政的) water supplies as well as bottled water, says, “In the short term, if you are an adult with no special health __5__, and you are not pregnant, then you can drink most cities’ tap water without having to worry.” This is because most of the pollutants in public water supplies exist at such small concentrations that most people would have to __6__ very large quantities for health problems to occur.
__7__, look at your water bottles carefully. It’s common for them to list the source as “municipal”, which means you paid for what __8__ is bottled tap water.
“Pregnant women, young children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses and those with weakened immune systems can be vulnerable(脆弱的) to the risks posed by polluted water,” NRDC does __9__, however. The group suggests that anyone who may be at risk obtain a copy of their city’s annual water quality report and review it with their __10__.
As for bottled water, 25 to 30 percent of it comes straight from municipal tap water systems, despite the pretty nature __11__ on the bottles that imply otherwise. Some of that water goes through additional filtering(过滤), but some does not. What’s more, bottled water is required to be __12__less frequently than tap water for bacteria and chemical pollutants, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration bottled water rules allow for some pollution by E. coli(大肠杆菌), __13__ to EPA tap water rules that prohibit any such pollution.
Also, NRDC found that there are no __14__ for bottled water to be disinfected or tested for parasites(寄生虫), unlike more strict EPA rules regulating tap water. This leaves the possibility __15__, says NRDC, that some bottled water may present similar health threats to those with weakened immune systems.
