Passage 2
(2023上·河南驻马店·高一河南省上蔡第一高级中学校联考阶段练习)Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is a great book that has attracted young and old readers for over a century. Its long-lasting popularity shows Sewell’s skillful storytelling and the great message at the novel’s heart.
Through the eyes of Black Beauty, readers are sent to a world filled with trouble, pity, and hope. Sewell’s choice to tell the story from the horse’s viewpoint(角度) was a new method which made it easier for future writers to explore the thoughts of animals. The main ideas in the novel are just as important today as they were in the Victorian times.
Black Beauty is a lovely black horse that begins as a carriage(马车) horse, but when he is hurt, his rich owner decides that he is no longer good enough to be a carriage horse. From that moment, he is passed from owner to owner and goes through lots of hard work. Even though many unpleasant things happen to Black Beauty at the hands of unkind humans, he lives up to his name both outside and inside.
This story of his life from birth to old age is beautifully descriptive. Everything from his active days as a baby horse on a farm to a hard life pulling carriages on stone roads in London can be readily pictured in the readers’mind. Each part carries an important message about animal well-being, kindness, and respect, and is filled with plenty of page-turning suspense(悬念).
This Collector’s Edition of Black Beauty shows respect for this beloved book. Each part of the book has been carefully considered. From the drawings on the cover to the colored blocking, this is truly one-of-a-kind. The matching colored endpapers add an extra touch of luxury(奢侈), making it the perfect addition to any collector’s library and a great chance to experience the story that will reach your heart and stay with you forever.

Passage 5
(2023上·广西河池·高一校联考阶段练习)
A Natural History of the Future
25.00
Ways to Buy: They Are Being Sold in Bookstores and Online
Introduction in Detail
Over the past century, humans have made surprising technological achievements with which we have found ways to control nature. From river dams(水坝) to huge one-crop fields, we continue to try to change nature for our goals--so much so it seems we may be in danger of affecting it seriously.
In A Natural History of the Future, expert Rob Dunn thinks that nothing could be further from the truth: rather than asking whether nature will let us live, better to ask whether we will let nature last. Although we try our best or worst efforts to control the nature world, life has its own laws, and no matter what man does, he cannot change them.
Explaining several basic laws of ecology(生态), Dunn shows why life cannot be stopped. We grow one single crop on the field, only to find new life appearing to attack them. We throw away harmful waste only to find microbes(微生物) to take it over. And even in the London Tube, we have seen a new type of insect appear to use a place that is clearly not fit to live. Life will not follow our carefully made plans. Instead, Dunn shows us the future of living things and the challenges that the next generation may face.
A Natural History of the Future sets a new standard for understanding the different kinds of life and our future as a kind of creature.

Having spent over five decades as a writer, the 82-year-old winner has published more than 20 books to her name, including Cleaned Out, Shame, a 2008 memoir called The Years and A Girl’s Story. Passage 15
(2023上·广西·高一校联考阶段练习)Norwegian playwright and author Jon Fosse has just been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature for his “innovative plays and prose( 散文) which give voice to the unsayable”.
The Swedish Academy credits Fosse as “one of the most widely performed playwrights in the world”, although the 64-year-old originally made his name as a novelist, beginning with “Red, Black” in 1983. He has since written many works of prose and poetry. “His literary works, spanning a variety of genres, comprises about 40 plays, novels, poetry collections, essays, children’s books and translations,” said Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature.
Jon Fosse draws inspiration from his rural living environment and personal struggles, which have deeply influenced his distinctive writing style. Fosse is the first-ever laureate (桂冠诗人) writing in Nynorsk, one of the two official languages of Norwegian, but only used by just 10% of the population. (2023上·江苏盐城·高一盐城中学校考阶段练习)Ada Palmer is a professor of European history at the University of Chicago. Her science-fiction series, Terra Ignota, was inspired by 18th-century philosophers such as Voltaire and Diderot. “I wanted to write a story that Voltaire might have written if Voltaire had be enable to read the last 70 years’ worth of science fiction and have all of those tools available(可获得的) for his use,” Palmer says in a radio program called Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Palmer says that Voltaire could actually be considered the first sci-fic writer, thanks to a place he wrote in 1752. “Voltaire has a short story called Micromégas, in which an alien from Saturn and an alien from a star near Sirius come to Earth. They are extremely big in size. They explore Earth and have trouble finding life forms because to them a whale is the size of a flea(跳蚤)”, she says. They eventually realize that the tiny little spot of wood on the ground is a ship, and it’s full of living things, including humans, and they make contact. So it’s a first-contact story.
Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein is often considered the first sci-fi novel. Voltaire was writing much earlier than Shelley, so should he have the title instead It depends on your definition(定义) of science fiction. “Micromégas doesn’t involve technology,” Palmer says, “so if you define science fiction as depending upon technology—and being about, in the Frankenstein sense. Is man’s knowledge giving us access to powers beyond what we’ve had before What does that mean ’—it isn’t asking that. But ‘aliens and first contact’ is a very significant science fictional element.”
So there’s no obvious answer to the question of who should be considered the first sci-fi writer. Palmer says it’s more important to ask the question than to arrive at any particular answer. “I don’t want to argue, ‘Yes, definitely, everybody’s histories of science fiction should start with Voltaire,” she says. “But I do want to argue that everybody’s histories of science fiction will be richer by discussing whether Voltaire is the beginning of science fiction, or whether it’s earlier or whether it’s later. Because that gets at the question of what science fiction is.”
1. What do we know about Micromégas according to the text
A. It is widely accepted as a science-fiction story.
B. It has a big influence on today’s science fiction.
C. Its main characters have trouble finding humans.
D. Its content is about humans’ exploration of space.
2. Why does Ada Palmer regard Voltaire as a sci-fi writer
A. One of his stories focuses on technology.
B. His story involves aliens from other planets.
C. He described human-alien contact in a story.
D. Her science fiction was inspired by his writing.
3. What does Ada Palmer really want to discuss when it comes to science fiction
A. Its true origin. B. What it can cover.
C. Its colourful expressions. D. Why it is interesting.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Ada Palmer and science fiction. B. Was Voltaire the first sci-fi author
C. Technology’s role in science fiction. D. What is science fiction really about
【答案】1. C 2. C 3. C 4. B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。该文报道了芝加哥大学教授Ada Palmer受18世纪哲学家伏尔泰启发写作的科幻系列作品,并讨论了关于谁是第一位科幻作家的问题。
1. 细节理解题。根据第二段“Voltaire has a short story called Micromégas, in which an alien from Saturn and an alien from a star near Sirius come to Earth. They are extremely big in size. They explore Earth and have trouble finding life forms because to them a whale is the size of a flea (跳蚤), she says. “They eventually realize that the tiny little spot of wood on the ground is a ship, and it’s full of living things, including humans, and they make contact.(伏尔泰有一个短篇故事叫《Micromégas》,讲的是一个来自土星的外星人和一个来自天狼星附近恒星的外星人来到地球。它们的体型非常大。她说,他们探索地球,却很难找到生命形式,因为对他们来说,鲸鱼只有跳蚤那么大。他们最终意识到,地面上那一小块木头是一艘船,船上满是生物,包括人类,他们接触了)”可知,从文章中可知《Micromégas》的主角很难找到人类。故选C项。
2. 细节理解题。根据第三段“Micromégas doesn’t involve technology,” Palmer says, “so if you define science fiction as depending upon technology—and being about, in the Frankenstein sense, Is man’s knowledge giving us access to powers beyond what we’ve had before What does that mean ’—it isn’t asking that. But ‘aliens and first contact’ is a very significant science fictional element.(“Micromégas并不涉及技术,”帕尔默说,“所以如果你把科幻小说定义为依赖于技术,并且是关于弗兰肯斯坦那种意义上的:人类的知识是否给予我们比以前更强大的力量?那意味着什么?——它并未涉及这一点。但“外星人和首次接触”是一个非常重要的科幻元素。”)”可知,帕尔默认为“外星人和首次接触”是一个非常重要的科幻元素,所以认为Micromégas是科幻小说,从而认为伏尔泰是一位科幻作家。故选C项。
3. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“So there’s no obvious answer to the question of who should be considered the first sci-fi writer. Because that gets at the question of what science fiction is.”(所以,谁应该被认为是第一个科幻作家这个问题没有明确的答案。
根据第二段“Palmer says that Voltaire could actually be considered the first sci-fic writer, thanks to a place he wrote in 1752.( 帕尔默说,伏尔泰实际上可以被认为是第一位科学作家,这要归功于他在1752年写的一篇文章)”以及第三段“Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein is often considered the first sci-fi novel. Voltaire was writing much earlier than Shelley, so should he have the title instead ( 玛丽·雪莱1818年的小说《弗兰肯斯坦》通常被认为是第一部科幻小说。伏尔泰写作的时间比雪莱早得多,那么他应该被冠以这个头衔吗 )”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讨论了伏尔泰是不是第一个科幻作家,以及通过讨论这个问题,能给读者带来的好处,所以B项“Was Voltaire the first sci-fi author (伏尔泰是第一个科幻作家吗 )”是本文最好的标题。故选B项。
Passage 17
(2023上·海南省直辖县级单位·高一文昌中学校联考期中)One early morning, I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book called Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again. I became immediately interested because of the word “Poems” that appeared in big, hot pink letters.
“Is it good ” I asked her.
“Yeah,” she answered. “There’s one I really like and you’ll like it, too.” I leaned forward.
“Patty Poem,” she read the title. Who is Patty I wondered. The poem began:
She never puts her toys away, Just leaves them scattered① where they lay, … ① 散乱的
The poem was just three short sections. The final one came quickly:
When she grows and gathers poise, ② I’ll miss her harum-scarum③ noise, And look in vain④ for scattered toys. ② 稳重 ③ 莽撞的 ④ 徒劳的
And I’ll be sad.
A terrible sadness washed over me. Whoever Patty was, she was a mean girl. Then, the shock.
“It’s you, honey,” my mother said sadly.
To my mother, the poem described a parent’s feeling when her child grows up and leaves. To me, the “she” in the poem was terrible. It was my mama who would be sad. It was so terrible that I began crying.
“What’s wrong ” my mother asked.
“Oh Mama,” I cried. “I don’t want to grow up ever!”
She smiled. “Honey, it’s okay. You’re not growing up anytime soon. And when you do, I’ll still love you, okay ”
“Okay,” I was still crying. My fear had gone. But I could not help thinking about that silly poem. After what seemed like a safe amount of time, I read the poem again and was confused. It all fit so well together, like a puzzle. The language was simple, so simple that I could plainly understand its meaning, yet it was still beautiful. I was now crazy about the idea of poetry(诗歌), words that had the power to make or break a person’s world.
I have since fallen in love with other poems, but “Patty Poem” remains my poem. After all, “Patty Poem” gave me my love for poetry not because it was the poem that lifted my spirits, but because it was the one that hurt me the most.

2. 推理判断题。根据倒数第六段中“To my mother, the poem described a parent’s feeling when her child grows up and leaves. (对我母亲来说,这首诗描述了一个妈妈在孩子长大离开时的感受。)”可知,对妈妈来说这首诗让她想起我也会长大,也会离开她。由此推知,作者的母亲喜欢读《帕蒂的诗》可能是因为这本书让她想到将要发生的事情。故选D项。

Through the eyes of Black Beauty, readers are sent to a world filled with trouble, pity, and hope. Sewell’s choice to tell the story from the horse’s viewpoint(角度) was a new method which made it easier for future writers to explore the thoughts of animals. A Natural History of the Future

Passage 14
(2023上·福建福州·高一校考阶段练习)French writer Annie Ernaux won the 2022 Nobel Prize in literature on Oct 6. She is the first French female to win the prize. In the words of the Nobel committee, Ernaux was given the award for the courage and sharp insight of her writing.
Having spent over five decades as a writer, the 82-year-old winner has published more than 20 books to her name, including Cleaned Out, Shame, a 2008 memoir called The Years and A Girl’s Story.

Additionally, his battles with depression have enabled him to explore the depths of human emotions and existential despair. “He touches you so deeply when you read his works,” said Anders Olsson. “What is special about him is the closeness in his writing. It touches your deepest feelings — anxieties, insecurities, questions of life and death. There is a sort of a universal impact of everything that he writes — it has appeal to the basic humanity.”

Passage 16
阅读理解
D. What is science fiction really about
Passage 19
(2023上·河北唐山·高一校考阶段练习)Birthdays often involve surprises. But this year’s surprise on the birthday of the great British playwright William Shakespeare is surely one of the most dramatic.
On April 22, one day before his 441st birthday anniversary, experts discovered that one of the most recognizable portraits of William Shakespeare is a fake. This means that we no longer have a good idea of what Shakespeare looked like. “It’s very possible that many pictures of Shakespeare might be unreliable because many of them are copies of this one,” said an expert from Britain’s National Portrait Gallery.
The discovery comes after four months of testing using X rays, ultraviolet light, microphotography and paint samples. The experts from the gallery say the image commonly known as the “Flower portrait”—was actually painted in the 1800s, about two centuries after Shakespeare’s death. The art experts who work at the gallery say they also used modem chemistry technology to check the paint on the picture. These checks found traces of paint dating from about 1814. Shakespeare died in 1616, and the date that appears on the portrait is 1609.
“We now think the portrait dates back to around 1818 to 1840. This was when there was a renewed interest in Shakespeare’s plays,” Tarnya Cooper, the gallery’s curator (馆长), told the Associated President.
The fake picture has often been used as a cover for collections of his plays. It is called the Flower portrait because one of its owners, Desmond Flower, gave it to the Royal Shakespeare S Company.
“There have always been questions about the painting,” said David Howells, curator for the Royal Shakespeare Company. “Now we know the truth, we can put the image in its proper place in the history of Shakespearean portraiture.”

(2023上·江苏淮安·高一统考期末)The king seemed to know what the duke was planning. So they went upstairs and set the bag of money on the table. The king counted it out in front of everyone. Then he pointed to the girls and said, “These poor little lambs. They’ve suffered so much. I know what my brother would want me to do.”
He turned to the duke and made those hand signs. The duke watched for a minute, then his eyes brightened up like he’d finally caught on. He gave the king a big smile.
The king said, “Here, MaryJane, Susan, and Joanna. Take the money. Take it all.”
The three girls started hugging him again. But the town doctor who’d stood watching the whole time, stuck his finger in the king’s face.
“You can’t fool me!” he hollered. “You are just a fraud!”
My heart thumped like a rabbit and I thought we were caught for sure!
The king stood there, looking gap-jawed at the doctor. The doctor kept on yelling. “You claim you’re an Englishman, but that’s the worst English accent I’ve ever heard! You are nothing but a swindler.” The crowd gathered around the doctor, trying to quiet him down.

Then she put her arm around the king on one side, and the other girls did the same on the other. Everyone clapped and stomped while the king held his head high.
The doctor pointed his finger at them. “Fine. But remember, I warned you.”

Passage 21
(2023上·山东泰安高一期中)
An Excerpt from The Mexican
—by Jack London
A mysterious youth came to the America—based Mexican Revolutionary Committee, requesting for its admission.
Nobody knew his history. The first day he drifted into their busy rooms, they all suspected him of being a spy of the Diaz regime(迪亚兹政权), which had been carrying out the dictatorial rule since 1876.
Boy as he was, he announced that he was Felipe Rivera, and he wished to work for the revolution. The revolutionists looked at each other with doubt in their eyes. And what made revolutionists the most confused was Rivera’s whereabouts—he always came back with his arms or legs seriously injured, dressed in ragged clothes. So what had he been doing recently Everyone in the Revolutionary Committee started to take precautions against him.
The situation changed totally when the Committee was in bad need of funds. Much to their surprise, such a slender boy should have successively brought them batches of gold and silver coins. Then came the most urgent situation where 5, 000 dollars were needed to buy guns for those revolutionists on standby on the border between the US and the Mexico. Rivera stood out and made a promise that he would give them 5,000 dollars within three weeks.
So, how could he get so much money within such a short period of time
Rivera was determined to help his people at the cost of his life. He fought against stronger and tougher boxers in the ring to make money for his people. One day he was engaged in a very tough fight against a champion boxer, Danny. Rivera didn’t match Danny in height, weight, or skills. And he was not half as popular. However, “The winner takes all!” And Rivera stubbornly asked for all—all he had on his mind was making the money for his people.
The fight was going on and on. The whole stadium was cheering for Danny; there were few on Rivera’s side. However, Rivera survived one blow after another; his excellent defence was frightening.
Danny rushed, forcing Rivera to give him a clinch. Was it a trick Rivera thought to himself.
Yes, it was. But Rivera was smart enough to avoid it. He backed and circled away.
He pretended to clinch with Danny’s next rush. Instead, at the last instant, just as their bodies should have come together, Rivera went quickly back. He had fooled him!
While Rivera was dancing away, Danny kept challenging him openly. Having run after him for two rounds, Danny found the boy not even daring to come near him. He started to throw all caution to the winds. Rivera was struck again and again. He took blows by the dozen—just to avoid the deadly clinch.
In the seventeenth round, Rivera, hit heavily, bent down. His hands dropped helplessly. Danny thought it was his chance—the boy was at his mercy. He decided to strike the deadly blow. But before he could do that, Rivera caught him off his guard and hit him in the mouth. Danny went down. When he rose, Rivera gave him another blow on the neck and jaw. He repeated this three times.
Danny did not rise again. The audience shouted for him to stand up. But the miracle did not happen.
“Count!” Rivera cried to the referee. When the count was finished, Danny, gathered up by his assistants, was carried to his corner.
“Who wins ” Rivera demanded.
Unwillingly, the referee caught his gloved hand and held it high up.
Rivera, unattended, walked to his corner, where his assistants had not yet placed his stool. He didn’t care. All he could remember was that he had got the $5,000 he needed. “The winner takes all! ” What mattered to him was that________.

“You couldn’t murder anyone, Dorian. He probably fell into the Seine from a bus. By the way, where’s that wonderful portrait he did of you Oh! I remember now. You told me years ago that you sent it to Selby Manor and that it got lost or stolen on the way. What a pity! I wanted to buy it. I wish I had now.” Lord Henry said.
“I never really liked it,” said Dorian.
“How have you kept your youth, Dorian You must have some secret. I’m only ten years older than you are, and I’m wrinkled and old. Please, tell me your secret. To get back my youth, I’d do anything in the world, except take exercise, get up early, or be respectable.”
When Dorian arrived home that night, he sent his servant to bed, and sat down on the sofa in the library. Then he began to think about his life.
“I’ve been an evil influence on my friends, and I’ve ruined the lives of many good young people,” he thought, “Ah! Why did I pray for the portrait to grow old, and for me to stay young I worshiped beauty and eternal youth, but they ruined me. It’s better not to think of the past. Nothing can change that. I must think of the future. James Vane is dead. Alan Campbell is dead, too. He shot himself one night in his laboratory.”
“I’m safe now,” he continued. “Basil painted the portrait that ruined my life. I can’t forgive him for that. Everything is the portrait’s fault.”
He began to wonder about the portrait. “If I’m good, maybe the portrait will become beautiful again,” he thought. “I’ll go and look.”
He took the lamp from the table and went upstairs. As he unlocked the door, he smiled. “Yes, I’ll be good,” he thought, “I won’t be frightened of this portrait any more.”
He went upstairs to the room and locked the door. Then he pulled the purple cloth off the portrait. He gave a cry of pain. The portrait was more horrible. His face looked more evil. There was new blood on the hand and on the feet.
Dorian trembled with fear. Dorian looked round the room and saw the knife that stabbed Basil Hallward. It was bright and shining.

Passage 23
(2023下·重庆·高一重庆一中校考阶段练习)On a warm, golden day in early August, I sat by the lake in the area of Park Corner on Prince Edward Island, where Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of the beloved 1908 children’s novel Anne of Green Gables, spent her childhood summers. Montgomery’s tale of the imaginative orphan Anne Shirley captured the minds of so many people that she and her red-headed heroine quickly became global literary miracles.
However, against the common belief, “people were never right in saying I was ‘Anne,’” Montgomery told in a 1921 letter. “But, in some respects, they will be right if they write me down as Emily.” She was referring to Emily of New Moon, a later novel, the first in a series about the difficulty of making it as a young female writer.
Emily, like Anne, is an orphan, but there the resemblance ends. In the adoptive family, Anne finds not only relatives, but companions who fall under the spell of her gift for seeing beauty and possibility in the world. For Emily, though, the story plays out differently. After her father dies, Emily is adopted by her dead mother’s family and finds herself at the mercy of her strict Aunt Elizabeth, who forbids her from reading or writing stories, trying to hold back Emily’s imagination (though in vain). Emily finds it “maddening that nobody could see that she had to write.” She is obsessed with words —their sound, their music and the magic of finding the right ones, which sparks a thrill of inspiration.
To some extent, Montgomery did base the Anne and Emily characters on herself. But while Anne was a charmed story, Emily was in many respects closer to the author, who was raised by her strict grandparent who allowed no space for the young Montgomery’s willful, imaginative personality.
For Montgomery, the road to reputation was far from easy. Now, a century after Emily’s release, I felt a surge of gratitude toward the author whose stories had defined my own childhood and inspired me to become a writer. She has not only carved those vivid characters on readers’ hearts. Her vision has shaped a future in which readers like me could dare to imagine and to write.
1. What do we know about Anne of Green Cables from the first two paragraphs

B. It reflects the happy childhood of its writer.
