Everybody,at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted,or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.
Once,a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die,for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body.Even if he were to survive,he would be lame throughout his life.
But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame.Much to the amazement of the doctor,he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down,he had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless.Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed,he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day,he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him.He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination,he did develop the ability to stand up,then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.
He began to walk to school, and then run to school,to run for the joy of running.Later in college he was on the track team.
In February 1934,in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run—this determined young man,Dr.Glenn Cunningham, ran the world’s fastest mile.
A good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in one’s self,Glenn Cunningham continues to be an inspiration for many, and his story,a brilliant evidence to how one can bounce back even when all difficulties are piled against one,to the degree that death seemed the preferable option.

Under the background of the slow growth of its total population to 1.44 billion,China has seen a sharp rise in older adults over the past decade, solidifying the country’s rapidly aging pattern, the latest national census(人口普查) data shows. The population on the Chinese mainland increased by an average of 0.53 percent annually during the past 10 years to 1.41 billion, compared with an annual growth rate of 0.57 percent from 2000 to 2010,according to the 7th national census published by the National Bureau of Statistics.
“The growth of the total population has slowed down but remains at a steady pace,” Ning Jizhe, head of the bureau, said at a news conference.“Based on trends in recent years,China’s population will grow at an increasingly slow rate in the future while remaining above 1.4 billion.” The increasing elderly population has become a defining feature of the past decade.
Ning said an aging society will set the tone for China’s population structure for a long time, presenting challenges and opportunities.“A graying population will pile pressure on supply of labor force and social services,as well as adding to families’ elderly care burden. But more elderly people could also motivate consumption of products and services targeting this age group, and advance the development of some technologies,” he said.
Ning added that those between the ages of 60 and 69,who are equipped with knowledge, experience and skills and are generally in good health, make up nearly 56 percent of all older adults.“Their potential to continue making contributions to society and playing a constructive role is big,” he responded to a question on the outlook for raising the retirement age and carrying out other potential measures aimed at addressing the aging trend. Some population economists also said the latest number and proportion(比例) of elderly are largely within predictions, and the aging trend will continue for a long time.
28.What does the 7th national census data show

Skyscrapers are the symbol of urban life and city people are used to seeing tall buildings and apartments.Farms,on the other hand, are associated with rural life. However, there are experts who think skyscrapers should become farms to meet the increasing food needs.
By the middle of the 21st century, some scientists suggest, almost 80% of the earth’s population could live in cities. In addition, the population could increase to 9.1 billion people during that time yet the amount of land available for farming will be the same.If current farming practices don’t change,we will need an area of new land to produce enough food for the planet.
Vertical farms, where urban farmers could grow crops in environmentally friendly skyscrapers, could be the solution. In spite of concerns over high costs, experts want to make it a reality and use these skyscrapers to grow crops.
Vertical farms would have many advantages, supporters say.Unlike traditional farming, vertical farming could be free of chemicals and diseases.Besides, crops would not suffer from problems like flooding. Finally, vertical farms would reduce the cost and negative effects of transporting food over long distances.
Some argue that although crops growing in a tall glass building would get natural sunlight during the day,it wouldn’t be enough. For this reason, vertical farms would need additional light sources, such as artificial light.
Another way of growing fresh food is to build urban farms on rooftops. This more practical approach may be more achievable than the idea of farms in skyscrapers, researchers suggest.Experts agree that innovative farming practices are needed to support the need for more food at affordable costs, both to the farmer and:to the consumer, but the best ideas could be yet to come.
32.What primary problem could vertical farming settle
A.Poor state of rural life.
B.Shortage of food supply.
C.High costs for transporting crops.
D.Environmental pollution.
33.What is the advantage of vertical farming
A.It can benefit transport industry. B.It requires little care.
C.It can produce organic food. D.It needs very low cost.
34.What is a big challenge to make vertical farming a reality
A.Farmable land. B.Light sources.
C.Crop diseases. D.Climate conditions.
35.What can be the best title for the text
A.Future food needs B.Symbol of urban life
C.Farms of the future D.Farming on rooftops

I hate pulling weeds!I thought.It’s hot.It’s sticky.And it’s Saturday!
Still,I made sure to pull every stinking(臭的)weed out of that flower garden. My dad was Mr Perfecto Lawnman. He could detect a single weed a mile away. And if he spotted as much as one weed,I’d be back pulling weeds for the rest of the day.
“Dad,I’m done.” I shouted from the garden, feeling sure that I had done a good job.He stormed out of the house.“Don’t be yelling outside,Kathy,” he grumbled(抱怨).“Use those two feet of yours and come get me.”
Suddenly,a sick feeling came over me.It was the kind of feeling I had when my dad was going to find a stinking weed.“Geez,” Dad said, waving an irritated(恼怒的) finger,“you missed a spot.” I sighed, went to the spot and pulled the weeds.Afterward,I looked back at Dad,still standing there with a scowl(怒容) on his face, which made me wonder if he even liked me.
Just then,a wet tongue washed over my face, breaking me from my thoughts.Sugar, our dog, looked at me gently.I smiled.“At least you like me.”
Two weeks later,on the morning of another weed picking weekend,I was sick, sweaty and feverish, and aching all over.“Let’s go,” Dad said, lifting me from the bed.“You need to see a doctor.” “Please,no,” I said,in a shallow, sickly voice.“I’d rather pull weeds.” He took me anyway, and the doctor said I had pneumonia(肺炎).The only nice thing about it was that I didn’t have to pull weeds.

That night,as I rested,a noise suddenly woke me up from my sleep. I opened my eyes just a sliver, from which I saw a tall, slender form.Enough moonlight shined through my window so that I could see it was my dad.“Why is he here ” I wondered, but still pretended to be sleeping.Surprisingly,he came up to me,putting his hand against my forehead. After all these,he laid a necklace on my nightstand, looking at me again quietly for a while, and then left.
When he was gone,I reached over to the nightstand(床头柜)and picked up the necklace. It wasn’t like any I’d ever seen before.Dangling from a golden chain was a dad bending his arm around a girl’s shoulder, and the girl looked just like me!They seemed to love each other deeply. With shaking hands,I held that necklace to my heart and cried. My dad,who never gave hugs and never said “I love you” had just said it all.第二单元测评

It’s still fresh in my memory:the feeling of making my first wooden surfboard. There was the excitement of what I was making:the fact I was going to play in the ocean with it.Then at last walking into the water with my new board and riding the waves as they crashed to the shore. All on a piece of wood that I had shaped myself,by hand.
It was my final year at university and I promised myself then that this was going to remain a part of my life in some form forever.
Making that first board had brought together two of my great loves:for the sea,and for trees.I grew up in Buckinghamshire,a long way from the ocean, but thankfully each summer we would make a family trip to the Cornish coast. It was on these holidays that I had my first taste of playing in the energy of the surf, experiencing the exciting feeling of being carried towards the beach by the rolling waves. From the first ride,I was hooked.
My other great passion was trees. The smell of the earth, the sound of the branches swinging in the wind and the crunching of leaves underfoot all bring about a sense of calm and wonder. It felt natural for me to explore the connection I felt with trees. So,in my early teens,I began crafting things from wood.
When the time came to leave university in 2009,I wasn’t alone.I was with my girlfriend, who is now my wife, and we had two options. It was either head back home for a life around London,or take a risk and try and make a life for ourselves in Cornwall.

An Israeli law banning too skinny models went into effect with the start of 2013.The law, approved last March in Israel, requires models to prove they have maintained a Body Mass Index(BMI) of at least 18.5 for three months before a fashion show. That means a woman who is 68 inches tall can weigh no less than 119 pounds.
“This law is another step in the war against eating disorders,” said physician Adatto.“Underweight models,” he explained,“can no longer serve as role models for innocent young people who copy their false image of being skinny.”
But some critics in this country say it is misguided, focusing on weight instead of health. They also say the Israeli ban is bound to fail because of the strong power of the fashion industry.“I think it’s an approach that isn’t going to work,” said eating disorder expert Susan Ice,who worked with an organization which creates a healthy working environment for models.
But Adatto told the reporter that he began to concern the issue after meeting an ambitious model who looked like she needed to be hospitalized. He said,“I realized that only legislation(立法) can change the situation. There was no time to waste;so many girls were dieting to death.”
However, the efforts to regulate models’ weight in Spain and Italy have not resulted in significant changes in part because of difficulties in determining reliable methods of measuring weight and health.
Still, folks including Ice say there’s no denying that images from Hollywood and the fashion industry can be difficult for young women to deal with.“Certainly I don’t believe the modeling industry has caused the rise in eating disorders, but it makes it harder,” she says.“It’s a difficult recovery environment, worshiping thinness as the beauty ideal.”
28.One benefit the new Israeli law may bring is .
A.to change the working conditions of models
B.to lower the chance of skinny models’ death
C.to provide guidance for women worshiping thinness
D.to prevent models from suffering from eating disorders
29.In the opinion of the critics, the law won’t succeed because .
A.it misleads young women to form a bad eating habit
B.the fashion industry is much too influential
C.it doesn’t create a healthy working environment for models
D.it doesn’t provide a proper approach that can work well
30.What caused Adatto to think that a law was needed to change the situation
A.Being interviewed by a reporter.
B.Establishing his fashion model agent.
C.Meeting an ambitious but too skinny model.
D.Seeing a model die from eating disorders.
31.According to the passage, the new Israeli law banning skinny models is .
A.practical B.controversial C.acceptable D.reasonable

Feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the magic elixir many of us dream it could be.
In a new study released last week, researchers analyzed data from two large-scale surveys about how Americans spend their time.Together the surveys included more than 35,000 respondents. The researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well-being—but only up to a point.
People who had up to two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who’d had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. So ultimately the free time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day.
Most people know that being too busy can cause stress. However,no evidence shows more free time will actually bring people happiness. For example, some adults struggle with the “retirement blues”,which can be due to lacking stimulation(刺激) and structure.
Part of finding the “sweet spot” has to do with how people spend the extra time they have, the researchers behind the new study argue.
They conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having 3.5 to seven free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing “productive” things(like exercising) or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities(like watching TV).Study participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day—but only if they used it unproductively.
Of course, what feels “productive” is up to you.If watching two hours of “Real Housewives” in your free time increases your happiness, you should do that.Even some traditionally productive or purposeful activities like walking, knitting, reading or cooking, which helps burn stress and put people in a state of flow, can be easy and beneficial.
32.What does the underlined word “elixir” mean in paragraph 1
A.Solution. B.Achievement. C.Purpose. D.Outcome.
33.Why is “retirement blues” mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To show the “sweet spot” is helpful.
B.To prove more free time might harm.
C.To confirm the retired lack stimulation.
D.To suggest the old keeping exercising.
34.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A.How to spend free time matters. B.Watching TV is unproductive.
C.Being active lessens anxiety. D.Reading is a purposeful activity.
35.Which will be the most suitable title for the text
A.What will you do in free time
B.What’s the free time “sweet spot”

D.What’s better,productive or unproductive

Fifteen years ago,I was born in a big family.I had been taught that money couldn’t buy everything ever since I was a little kid.My parents are the most hard-working people I have ever seen.As much as my parents tried to teach me these values, some could only be learned through personal experiences.
As a child,I would sit in the church trying to concentrate on the words of the priest(牧师),but my attention was soon attracted by the shining gold and the diamonds worn by the Saturday churchgoers. As my eyes began to wander,I noticed men dressed in their tailored suits and shirts accompanied by women in their designer dresses with matching handbags and shoes.
My family,on the other hand, was the opposite of rich. Our hand-me-down clothes had been washed so many times that the colors had become dull and lifeless.Although this revealed the money struggles of our large family, our faces were always washed and hair neatly combed. When sitting on the old big red and white truck after the service,I pictured the lives led by those driving their brand-new cars, wishing I would be one of them.
I never stopped those fantasies, even when I was in middle school.Since it was a private school, most of the children came from wealthy families. As a result,I constantly felt ashamed.Although I could hide my lack of wealth at school by wearing our school uniforms,my poverty was embarrassingly apparent on weekends with my classmates wearing designer jeans and I had no choice but to wear my sisters’ old jeans.I never fitted in with my classmates. To my relief, there was only one girl named Julie who opened her heart to me.I was attached to her like a shadow.Soon, her birthday was approaching.Julie invited me to attend her birthday party.

Good morning and welcome to today’s programme!Feel English too difficult You can get some advice today.Firstly, find a regular and practical study programme, like planning a few minutes every morning before breakfast. This idea may sound useless to you who took English for quite a few years but didn’t become good speakers of the language. As a matter of fact,I don’t mean that you can become fluent speakers with just a few minutes here and there, but following a regular course of study can help you on the way to language mastery. Also, small steps, step by step, are the key.For example, planning to learn five new words a day and learning to use them actively are far better than learning 45 words and forgetting them the next day.Thirdly, speaking without fear is important. The fastest way to learn something is to do it again and again until you get it OK.Don’t let fear stop you from getting what you want.

However,I grew upset as I couldn’t afford a gift.It would be such an embarrassing scene to be present without a gift.I even thought about quitting, but I was not able to bring it forth.I struggled for days but couldn’t figure out any solution. One day, while helping with my hardworking parents with the housework,it suddenly occurred to me that maybe I could make a gift by myself.I immediately started my DIY project, which ended up with a toy doll. The big day finally came.I arrived at her house and handed her the box.
When she opened the gift box,my heart was too nervous to beat.I looked closely at her face, wondering if she would just laugh at me.What happened next was totally beyond my imagination.Upon seeing the doll,Julie let out a cry of excitement and she held it close to her face, saying repeatedly that it was the sweetest gift she had ever received. Her words freed me.I couldn’t help smiling together with her.At that precious moment,I realized money couldn’t buy everything. It was our friendship that really mattered.第三单元测评

The following 4 famous paintings — from Jan van Eyck’s portrait to Pablo Picasso’s masterpiece — have stood the test of time.
The Amolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck’s The Amolfini Portrait,an oil painting on wood produced in 1434,in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her,is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery,London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through van Eyck’s heavy use of symbolism — while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas(帆布),a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint-Remy-de-Provence,France between 1889 and 1890.When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941,it was not well known, but it has since become one of van Gogh’s most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565.It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September.Nicolaes Jonghelinck,a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica,a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter,Pablo Picasso in 1937.The title “Guernica” refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War.The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war.Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.

Singapore’s tradition of eating out in places called hawker centers is now recognized by the United Nations for its cultural importance.
A hawker is a person who sells food or goods and advertises by shouting at people walking by on the street.Hawkers are an important part of Singaporean culture.Open-air eating areas where hawkers sell their goods are very popular.Famous chefs, such as Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay have praised them.
On Wednesday, the United Nations’ cultural agency,UNESCO,added the city’s “hawker culture” to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.Singapore sought to have hawker culture added to the list about two years ago.Now that it has been recognized,Singapore must provide a report every six years to UNESCO.The report must show efforts the city-state has made to save and support its hawker culture.
“These centers serve as ‘community dining rooms’,where people from diverse backgrounds gather and share the experience of dining over breakfast, lunch and dinner,” UNESCO said.
In the 1970s,Singapore cleaned up its streets so the city moved street hawkers to new eating centers. These areas were part of an effort to improve the island. Now,the centers offer many different low-cost meals for local people and provide a pleasing social setting. The 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians showed its stars enjoying meals at a famous night market. Some sellers even received Michelin stars from a famous restaurant rating system for their meals costing only a few dollars.

A letter written to a 12-year-old girl in Lithuania was delivered in December, almost 51 years after it was sent by a pen pal in Poland.“I thought that someone was pranking me,” said Genovefa Klonovska after being handed the letter, which included a handmade colored rose and two paper dolls.
The letter, together with 17 others, fell out of a ventilation hole(通风口) this summer, dirty and wrinkled,as a wall was taken down in a former post office on the suburb of Vilnius.Jurgis Vilnius, owner of the building immediately called the post office.“I’m so happy they got interested,” said he.
Street names and their numbering have changed in Vilnius, and post office workers spent months looking for the right houses and talking to current renters and neighbours, tracking down where the recipients moved to.Only five were found. In several cases children of late recipients were handed a lost letter.
“We felt a moral duty to do this,” said Deimante Zebrauskaite, head of the customer experience department at Lithuania Post.
One lady compared the experience to receiving a message from a bottle thrown into sea.People were emotional.“Some felt they saw a part of daily life of their deceased parents,” Zebrauskaite said.
In the letter to Klonovska, sent from Koezary in Poland and stamped in 1970,a girl named Ewa complains buses no longer reach her village,so she has to walk in minus 23 degree Celsius cold, and asks for pictures of actors.
Now in her 60s,Klonovska has no memory of Ewa.She probably wrote Ewa after finding her address advertising for pen pals in a newspaper, and the relationship ceased after the letter got undelivered.
“So good that the letter didn’t matter much. The loss was not life-changing,” said Klonovska.“What if they delivered a lost letter from a suitor(求婚者) to his love, and their wedding never happened ”

A British friend told me he couldn’t understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds(嗑瓜子) as a snack so much.“I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth.I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it,I suddenly became more aware.I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report,I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and,to him,it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then,we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every household was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking.Out in the living room,a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth,ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast.I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits,no matter how strange they may seem.
It’s not only in China. When I went abroad,I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food.In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner,no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it’s a delicacy(美味佳肴),and it’s connected to their certain culture.I think it’s a wonderful tradition.
32.Why can the British friend not understand when he found Chinese love eating sunflower seeds
A.Because the seeds are too hard to crack.
B.Because he thinks they are harmful to teeth.
C.Because he doesn’t think the seeds are good.
D.Because he doesn’t think the seeds are worth eating.
33.What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year
A.The families get together for it. B.Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.
C.The traditions of celebrating it disappear. D.Children can eat delicious food on that day.
34.What’s the writer’s attitude to Denmark’s way of eating bread
A.Indifferent. B.Critical.
C.Understandable. D.Doubtful.

Mogao Caves
Regarded as the largest Buddhist cave site with the greatest amount of cultural relics in the world, the Mogao Caves, also known as the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas,is a large palace of art combining different ancient architectures, incredible painted sculptures and extraordinary varied wall paintings. 36
Most caves found in the Mogao Caves are examples of rock-cut architecture of different styles in terms of building and function. 37 Many of the caves originally had wooden porches, but only five remain. 38

Hello, everyone.Today I’m going to talk about small talk, that is,short conversations people often have with strangers they meet.Such exchanges occur at bus stops,on buses, while waiting in line, almost anywhere that strangers gather close together. As a matter of fact, these short conversations are a good way for people to say hello and express friendliness.Such conversations usually cover a wide range of topics. The topics may include weather, customer service, movies,TV shows, local sports or the latest news. But you should always keep it in your mind that private questions about salaries, family life, religious beliefs and politics should be avoided during these conversations.Besides,it’s better to ask open-ended questions. If you ask visitors,“Do you like our city ” They may say simply,“Yes.”On the other hand,if you ask,“What do you think of our city ” They will have more freedom in answering. This type of question also shows that you are interested in them.If you appear interested in what people are saying, they’d feel more comfortable talking with you.

I’d been thinking of taking a course on scuba-diving(水肺潜水) for months, but wasn’t sure because I was afraid of snakes!Sea snakes.Just thinking about it made me sick.
But then,I wanted to know why people loved it so much. They all said that under the sea was like a totally different world, yet a beautiful one.And because of that,I decided to take the risk and try to face my fear.
So,after taking a private course from my diving instructor,Mbak Vita,I went to Sepa Island with her,to take the final exam.
First dive,12 meters in depth.“What am I doing ” I asked myself.“What if something bad happened ” I tried hard not to panic and told myself to keep a good thought,“It’s gonna be a wonderful experience.Just do it!” Then I went down.My heart beat fast and my ears hurt as I went deeper.I followed Vita’s instructions closely until I felt comfortable to explore the sea.
Suddenly all around me was green. It felt like I was living in a green world!I saw some corals(珊瑚),big ones, and lots of beautiful fish hiding in the sand.
I was enjoying the beauty all around me when my instructor waved at me with her hand holding a pink flipper(橡胶蹼).“That flipper looks familiar,” I thought.Yes!That was my flipper!I didn’t realize that my right flipper had managed to get away from my right foot!
So,that was the first dive.In total,we dove 5 times in 2 days.We managed to dive up to 18 meters in depth. The next dives were smooth and for sure I didn’t lose my flipper!I was so happy to see different types of fish swimming in front of me as if I was invisible(不可见的).It was indeed so beautiful and peaceful down there. Now I can see why people love diving under the sea.

A blue hole is a special kind of underwater cave found inland or in the sea, which forms when the earth above a cave falls in and water fills the space.
An inland blue hole’s water is very still and has different layers.A layer of fresh rainwater floats on top of salt water;the fresh water keeps oxygen from the atmosphere from reaching the salt water;brightly colored bacteria live where the two layers meet.
Diving into blue holes is extremely dangerous.Near the top of the blue hole, there is a layer of toxic gas, which causes itching, dizziness, and—in large amounts—death.Divers must also be fast. They have to get in and out of a cave before their oxygen runs out.Additionally, divers have to follow a guideline as they swim through a blue hole because it is very dark inside.Without the guideline, they may get lost.
If blue holes are so dangerous, why do explorers and scientists risk their lives to explore them The reason is that these underwater caves can provide valuable scientific information. They provide clues about geology, archaeology, and biology. For example, some blue hole creatures, such as the remipede, probably haven’t changed for millions of years.
The blue holes could even provide clues about astrobiology. For example, divers have found bacteria there that can live without oxygen.Astrobiologist Kevin Hand says the bacteria may be similar to forms of life that might exist on Jupiter’s fourth largest moon,Europa.“Our study of life’s extremes on Earth,” he says,“can help increase our understanding of habitable environments off Earth.”
In addition, the oxygen-free environment of the blue holes preserves bones of humans and animals that fell into the caves long ago.By studying blue holes,we can understand what life was like in prehistoric times. As cave diver Kenny Broad says,“I can think of no other environment on Earth that is so challenging to explore and gives us back so much scientifically.”
28.What’s the main idea of paragraph 1
A.The structure of a blue hole. B.The location of a blue hole.
C.The formation of a blue hole. D.The definition of a blue hole.
29.Where can bright-colored bacteria be found
A.In the saltwater layer.
B.In the freshwater layer.

Can you trust your very first childhood memories Maybe not,a new study suggests.
Past researches show that people’s earliest memories typically form around 3 to 3.5 years of age.But in a recent survey of more than 6,600 people,British scientists have found that 39 percent of participants claimed to have memories from age 2 or younger. These first memories are likely false, the researchers said. This was particularly the case for middle-aged and older adults.
For the study, researchers asked participants to describe their first memory and the age at which it occurred.Participants were told they had to be sure the memory was the one that had happened. For example,it shouldn’t be based on a photograph,a family story or any source other than direct experiences. Then the researchers examined the content, language and descriptive details of these earliest memories and worked out the likely reasons why people would claim to have memories from an age when memories cannot form.
As many of these memories dated before the age of 2,this suggests they were not based on actual facts, but facts or knowledge about their babyhood or childhood from photographs or family stories.Often these false memories are fired by a part of an early experience, such as family relationships or feeling sad,the researchers explained.
“We suggest that what a rememberer has in mind when recalling fictional early memories is...a mental representation consisting of remembered pieces of early experiences and some facts or knowledge about their own babyhood or childhood,” study author Shania Kantar said in a journal news release,“Additionally, further details may be unconsciously inferred or added.Such memory-like mental representations come over time,to be collectively experienced when they come to mind,so for the individual, they quite simply are memories, which particularly point to babyhood.”
“Importantly, the person remembering them doesn’t know this is fictional,” study co-author Martin Conway said “In fact, when people are told that their memories are false they often don’t believe it.”
32.What can we learn from a recent study
A.Memories form after the age of 3. B.Participants are good at telling stories.
C.Adults are likely to form false memories. D.Earliest memories may play a trick on us.
33.Which source did the researchers require for the earliest memories
A.A direct experience. B.A family story. C.A family photo. D.A sad feeling.
34.What are these fictional early memories according to Kantar
A.They are repeated mental representations.
B.They are a collection of early experiences.
C.They are a combination of both facts and fictions.
D.They are further details of remembered experiences.
35.Which part of a newspaper is this text probably taken from
A.Society. B.Psychology. C.Technology. D.Health.

Science is a mental toolbox for solving problems. 36 And they are powerful and useful in everyday life.Today,we open the toolbox:how scientists think, and how you can borrow their tricks.
Start with an open mind.Being open-minded means that when we are asked a question, scientific thinking requires us to admit that we often simply don’t know the answer. 37 If the evidence changes and you don’t change your mind, that’s not a good spot to be in.
Accept uncertainty.Scientists always accept that there are things they don’t know, and things they simply cannot know for sure. 38 It allows you to make better decisions because you’re taking the uncertainty into account.Science says it’s OK to wait for evidence before coming to a conclusion.
39 Go and do your research.Pull together all the data—stuff that agrees with your argument and stuff that refutes(驳斥) it.Consider everything, rather than focusing on a single point. Then, for each piece of data, consider the quality of the evidence.
Develop a hypothesis(假设).A hypothesis is a theory about the world—a guess.Ask yourself:Which of my theories best explains the data I have gathered Start with the most likely explanation and test it. 40
A.Collect your data.
B.Focus on your argument.
C.The tools are simpler than you would think.
D.Accepting you don’t know things isn’t a sign of weakness.
E.There is no point in having a theory that can’t be proven false.
F.It also means not holding on to a belief when the evidence changes.
G.If you can prove it wrong, move on to the next most likely explanation.

Three years ago,a group of researchers at Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab had a guess. They knew that many apples being 41 to kids as part of the National School Lunch Program were ending up in the trash, almost untouched. But unlike others, they wondered if the reason was more complicated than simply that the kids didn’t want the 42 .
They thought the fact that the apples were being served 43 ,rather than sliced(切成片的),was doing the fruit no favor. And they wanted to 44 this idea.
They carried out a pilot study(初步研究) at eight 45 and found that fruit consumption 46 by more than 60 percent when apples were served sliced. They 47 made a follow-up study at six other schools, which not only showed the same result, but further 48 it.Both the overall apple consumption and the percentage of students who ate more than half of the apple served to them were more than 70 percent higher at schools that served 49 apples.
Based on these 50 ,it seems that even the simplest forms of 51 can influence us.Sliced apples just make more sense for kids. The hardest part is getting kids to start eating fruit, and that’s exactly why sliced apples are the way to go.A child holding a whole apple has to break the skin, eat around the core(果核),and 52 the inconvenience of holding a large fruit. These 53 might seem silly or unimportant, but they’re important when you’re 54 teeth or have braces(牙箍),as so many kids do.
It’s one of those situations where what seems like a really 55 inconvenience actually makes a huge difference.

Early one weekend morning,I was sleeping like a log when the telephone rang.It was Grandma. She invited us to her home in the countryside. After a quick breakfast,Dad and I drove to Grandma’s.
Once we arrived,we were both thrilled by the breathtaking landscape. The plum trees in the backyard were ripe with fruit, while millions of wildflowers colored the valley.Grandma prepared delicious lunch including her special homemade apple jam, which was my favorite.Talking and laughing,we didn’t even notice that it was late in the afternoon, though somewhat cooler than it had been that morning.Grandma suggested that we take her homemade wooden boat for a tour along the nearby river.
Seated in the boat, looking up at the sky,I felt like the clouds were greeting us cheerfully from above. In the vast fields, the golden trees were like brides in the sun.The breeze skimmed over the surface of the field, carrying the sweet smell of the flowers.“It is so nice to spend some quality time with family,”Dad murmured.“It feels like we’re on an adventure,”I added.“It’s been so much fun!”
While we were admiring the splendid setting around us,the weather started getting hot and humid again. At first,we ignored this change, but when Dad looked up at the sky,he saw dark, low clouds were approaching us.Then a fierce gale(大风) sprang up.Lightning flashed within the black clouds, followed by a roar of thunder.“Row!” Dad shouted, trembling.“A tornado(龙卷风)is coming!”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

(Text 10)
I first met Steve years ago at a backyard pool party.I was so confused by getting to meet him in person that I stumbled over my name when we were introduced.I watched as he swam in the pool with his son, like a regular guy,a good dad having fun with his kids.
The next time I met him was when our children started going to school together. He was sitting in the classroom while the rest of us were pretending having Steve Jobs in the room was totally normal.
It was one Halloween when I realised he actually knew my name, which made me a little surprised.Dressed like a monster,he was decorating a scary house with his wife.As I walked by with my son,Steve smiled and said,“Hi,Listen.” My son thought I was the coolest mom in town when he realised Steve Jobs knew me.
From then on,when I saw him holding his meetings in our neighbourhood,I didn’t hesitate to smile and say hi.Steve always returned the greeting, proving that while he may be a genius,he was also a good neighbour.

第二节
There was no time to think. We rowed as fast as we could.Although I didn’t dare to look,I could feel the tornado getting closer as hail started to fall, hitting the creaky old boat hard.Chased by the relentless nightmare,I couldn’t afford to let up for a moment.I didn’t even wipe the sweat away as it streamed in my eyes and blurred my view. Finally Grandma’s house appeared before my eyes.We jumped out of the boat and ran towards it.Gasping for breath,we buzzed the doorbell again and again.
Grandma opened the door for us.We dripped water on her floor as we went inside, our shoes and clothes soaked through.Grandma said we needed to find a safer place to ride out the tornado, and we followed her into the cellar.Dad helped close off the entrance while I huddled in the dark corner, quivering from the cold and the fear.We stayed down there, waiting for the tornado to pass over us.We didn’t wait very long, for it was over in a matter of minutes. However, after this experience,I appreciated every day with my family.第四单元测评

A trip to the library was like a great journey to a different country. To get there,we had to walk a mile. But our weekly journeys to the library were a piece of perfection.I had around me at one time all the people I loved best—my father and mother and brothers and sister—and all the things I loved best—quiet, space, and books.
I read a lot of books about science:not the spaceships my brothers preferred, but the birds and bees—literally.I brought home a book of birds and searched the trees for anything other than robins(知更鸟).I went through a phase of loving books with practical science experiments and used up a whole bottle of white vinegar by pouring it on the sides of our apartment building to prove that it was constructed of limestone(石灰石).
One Saturday,as I wandered through the young adult section,I saw a title:Little Women,by Lousia May Alcott.I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything.A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home.
So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs.I read and read until it was time to walk home, and, except for a few essential interruptions like sleeping and eating.I did not put it down until the end.Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in the wake of Alcott’s story. It was about girls, for one thing, girls who could almost be like me,especially Jo.I had found someone who thought and felt the way I did.
24.What can we say about the author’s family
A.They were travel fans. B.They were bookworms.
C.They were against watching TV. D.They held seminars in the library.
25.What is paragraph 2 mainly intended to convey
A.Her different attitudes towards nature . B.Her experiments of science.
C.Her reason of studying birds and bees. D.Her reading craze at one time.
26.What is the author’s belief in book reading
A.Book titles might be misleading.
B.Science books are more interesting than arts books.
C.Repetitive reading is important.
D.All books need to be digested.
27.What effect did Little Women produce on the author
A.She was totally transformed. B.It made her sleepless and tasteless.
C.She was heartbroken. D.It kept her absorbed.
C
Technology has become a basic part of our lives. It has transformed our lives in many ways.It makes life more convenient for us:we can send messages quickly via the Internet, cook meals in a few minutes in a microwave, and book train tickets online instead of walking to the station. However,in our increasingly technology-driven world, have we become addicted to technology
Not too long ago, many children enjoyed reading a good book in their spare time.Nowadays, adolescents are more likely to be seen playing video games or watching television.Similarly, sending letters has become a thing of the past.It has been replaced by e-mails,instant messaging and social media.I think this is a huge shame;for me,there’s nothing better than receiving a letter in the post.It shows someone has taken the time to sit down and write something;this is much more personal than a conversation online. For some people—especially the older generation—new methods of communication aren’t so accessible.I regularly send letters and postcards to my grandma to keep her updated with my life in France;I also send them to my boyfriend and sister.
The presence of social media has,in some respects, turned us into antisocial beings.Instead of meeting up with friends and seeing them face to face,we now spend a lot of time communicating online.Although online communication has its advantages, enabling us to keep in touch with loved ones in different countries,we shouldn’t forget the value of real-life human interaction.
Admittedly,I spend a lot of time using technology.I rely on the Internet and my laptop to plan lessons for my classes.I use WIFI on my phone to send messages via apps such as Viber and Snapchat. That said, when I’m on holiday,it is nice to switch it all off and have a break.Taking a break from technology is liberating.
28.From the first paragraph,we can know technology makes our life .
A.happier B.more colorful C.more diverse D.easier
29.How is the second paragraph mainly developed
A.By inferring. B.By comparing.
C.By listing importance. D.By giving explanations.
30.Why does the writer prefer receiving a letter rather than an e-mail
A.Because she isn’t good at using computers.
B.Because she is unwilling to accept new things.
C.Because a letter is more personal.
D.Because she is used to the letter.
31.What’s the writer’s attitude towards technology
A.Addicted. B.Puzzled. C.Curious. D.Objective.
D
When you don’t have a car and need to get around, are you more likely to call for an Uber or Lyft,or a cab Last Friday,Lyft—the ride-sharing company, went public as its stocks(股票) started trading on the market.Lyft has become the first big initial public offering of the “gig economy” age. While the company is not making profits yet,it is changing the meaning of work. What is gig economy and what makes it so appealing
Gig works are independent contracts or part-time jobs such as Uber.In the gig economy, companies hire independent contractors instead of full-time employees. This is different from traditional companies where full-time workers hold a lifetime career. In the past, only small companies hired contractors, while today, employers like Amazon and Google rely on temporary workforce. These companies save costs as they are not legally required to provide healthcare benefits, retirement savings or paid time off to gig workers.
Gig work appeals to different people for different reasons. For some,it affords flexible timings and for others who are looking for full-time jobs,it provides a source of income to support themselves. Some people work a full-time job and supplement(补充) their salary with gig jobs such as driving for Uber or Lyft.
Joining the gig economy may be simple, but maintaining a steady career is easier said than done.Gig work comes with unsteady pay and workloads. You’re your own boss.It sounds fun,but when you have no self-control and an unsteady job,you might splurge all your money the first week and live on bread pieces for the rest of the month!Besides a strong sense of responsibility, gig workers have to stay up to date to get companies to hire them.
Despite the challenges gig workers face, nearly 60 million Americans are part of this workforce. As this number grows,we have to see how society and companies adapt to this new world of work!
32.What can be learned about Lyft from the passage
A.It has built up a large fortune.
B.It employs a fixed number of full-time workers.
C.It appeals to people as a means of public transport.
D.It marks the arrival of gig economy age.
33.Who are most likely to become gig workers
A.People seeking for a steady income.
B.People in need of flexible working hours.
C.Those desperate to get paid vacations.
D.Those concerned about retirement accounts.
34.What does the underlined word “splurge” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Spend money freely. B.Save money automatically.
C.Earn money quickly. D.Assign money casually.
35.What is the message mainly conveyed in the passage
A.Gig workers have to face some potential challenges.
B.Gig workers have to possess some much-needed qualities.
C.The appearance of gig companies will solve the job problems.
D.People should adjust to new work trends with the rise of gig companies.

Three ways to self-fund college
The idea that parents should pay for their children’s college education is a nice one,but it’s far from a reality for many students. 36 Whatever the case may be,it’s time to take a good look at your options for funding college on your own.
Turn over every stone.
If you’re not a straight-A genius who could easily win college scholarships, there’s good news: 37 Check out these popular College Confidential threads to see which awards average and above-average students are aiming at.Are your parents retirees Are you a first-generation student Is your family attached to any church or community groups (Seriously, there are scholarships for all those things.) The secret to scoring major cash is following every possible source of funding.
38
Instead of going straight to a four-year institution, many students are choosing to start out at an affordable community college and transfer later. 39 If these are options that could work for you, just be sure you have a solid plan in place, and don’t let yourself get sidetracked from your goal of earning a college degree.
Take what you can get.
Remember that not all valuable contributions are money-related.It’s time to sit down with your parents and have a serious talk about other expenses they might be able to help you with. 40 You can save several thousand per year on housing. What about books, meals, and other expenses Even relatively small savings can be a huge leg up in the long run.
A.Take an alternative route.
B.You don’t need to be a genius to qualify for scholarships.
C.If they’re fine about letting you live at home, that’s great.
D.Think about if you can afford a price of around $10,000 per year.
E.Recent studies show a widespread lack of understanding of the real cost of college.
F.Similarly, some choose to take a year or two off after high school to save up as much as possible.
G.Some parents believe the responsibility of paying for college should fall on the person seeking a degree—that’s you.

The whole class burst out laughing as John rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped pajama top underneath, and instead of white school shoes,he wore a pair of bright green sandals(凉鞋) that were too big in size. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
John murmured,“Sorry, teacher,” and quickly stepped to his seat.Mr Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly died down.John’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays.Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by John’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day,it was the pajama top and green sandals.
John lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily.Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks.Although John was adorable,he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time.Only Harry, who sat next to John, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday,John did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school,Harry decided to walk over to John’s house to check on him.As he approached the gate,he could hear violin music.John must be listening to music,he thought. The gate was not locked.Harry let himself in.He called John’s name a few times but there was no response. The music played on.Harry peered in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room,John was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played perfectly,so much so that it sounded like a recording.Harry left quietly.

Now let me tell you about my experience of skydance. At the beginning we watched a short video that explains all the safety rules and walks you through what will happen on the plane. While we waited for our turn to ride, there was an open grass area with benches where we watched others landing. On the way up,my sister and I were excited whole time, laughing and screaming before we even got to a quarter of the elevation.Everyone always tells you that you are going to be frightened when that door flies open, but I’ve never been so excited in my life.As soon as it opened,I immediately gave a look at my sister and we both just had this look in our face of excitement.Thirty seconds later I watched her fall out of the plane, then flew out myself. My grandpa came falling out right after me.After I went through a minute of free fall,I pulled the shoot and landed to the ground. When I landed I was filled with excitement, but my sister caught my attention and made me turn around so I could see my grandpa landing—then she took a picture as soon as he did.I couldn’t ask for a better experience!

写作
第一节
The cellphone has become a part of people’s daily life.We use it to communicate with others, post pictures and update our profile. But I think spending too much time playing cellphone is bad for us.
In order to use the cellphone properly,I set some rules for myself, for example,I only used my cellphone for 1 hour on weekends and let my parents supervise me.I benefit a lot from it.Firstly,I feel energetic and I can concentrate on my study. What’s more,I spend more time playing outdoors with my friends.
In my opinion, you should limit the time you spend on your cellphone. And it is suggested that you should develop an interest in other things, such as reading and running.

When Teachers’ Day came around,Harry had a plan.It was the tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers.Every class had to contribute an item.Harry convinced the class to let John perform.Short of ideas, the class agreed. When the invitation approached John,he jumped at it.On the day of the concert, both the teachers and students were surprised to see the school’s clumsiest student walking on stage with a violin.
When he started to play, the audience fell silent.Jaws dropped.Everyone was stricken dumb with amazement and also carried away by the beautiful notes flowing from the strings. There were no more judgments on John’s dressing or behavior, but the entertainment by his remarkable performance. As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience erupted into thunderous applause.John became a sensation and had many fans in his final year of school though he still arrives to class wearing an inside-out shirt or mismatched shoes.第六单元测评

Space is the final frontier.Sending rockets into space has become almost common. The demand for communications satellites and space-based image services is growing.
Today, space efforts cost about $200 billion a year.Joint efforts between governments and businesses are helping to lower costs and increase our understanding of the universe.
The business of space looks good for Orbital ATK,a company based in the United States. In January, the company launched its Antares rocket. The rocket was carrying the first of eight planned supply shipments to the International Space Station.Orbital ATK is one of the two American companies paid by NASA to transport supplies to the space station.
A company called Arianespace is a private European space business.Clayton Nowry heads the American division of the company. He says the increase in rocket launches is partly the result of increasing demand for space-based technologies. These include high-definition(高清的) broadcasts and satellite broadband services.
While there is more demand for satellites, the end of NASA’s space shuttle programme in 2011 has hurt the space industry.Janice Starzyk works at International Launch Services. She works on education issues at the Washington Space Business Roundtable. She said,“It’s a pity that the programme’s shutdown was a huge, huge set of lay-offs(下岗人员) in the industry.”
But even as NASA reduces its spending, other countries have announced plans to explore space. In December 2013,China became just the third country to land an unmanned space vehicle on the moon.A month later,India sent its first communications satellite.
24.What makes sending rockets into space become very usual

B.To send more rockets into space and use them.
C.To produce more communications satellites for the public.
D.To keep costs down and help us learn more about the universe.
26.What do we know about Orbital ATK
A.It’s a private European space business.
B.It sent its Antares rocket in January.
C.It’s a company based in the United Kingdom.
D.It’s the only American company paid by NASA.
27.How may Janice Starzyk feel about the programme’s shutdown
A.Hopeful. B.Content. C.Regretful. D.Uninterested.

Starman, the dummy(仿真人) riding a cherry-red Tesla Roadster(特斯拉敞篷车) through space, has made his closest approach ever to Mars. The electric roadster and its passenger were attached to the top of a Falcon Heavy rocket during the SpaceX rocket’s first test launch on 6 February 2018.
Two years later, the Falcon Heavy rocket and the vehicle at its tip are making their second trip around the Sun.Mr McDowell,a Harvard astrophysicist, found that Starman passed 7.4 million kilometers from Mars at 06:25 GMT 7 October,2020.
The closest recent approach between the Earth and Mars was 56 million kilometers in 2003,though the planets are often hundreds of millions of miles apart depending on where they are in their orbits. No one can see the Falcon Heavy rocket at its current distance, but orbits over periods of a few years are fairly straightforward to predict, and Mr McDowell used data about how the rocket was moving when it left the Earth’s gravity behind to locate its recent movements exactly.
Last time Starman circled the Sun,McDowell said,it crossed Mars’ orbit while the Red Planet was quite far away. But this time the crossing lined up with a fairly close approach, though still not close enough to feel a strong tug from Mars.
At this point in time,if you were able to go look at the Roadster,it would probably look pretty different. The strong solar radiation environment between the planets would probably have destroyed all the exposed organic materials.
Without the Earth’s atmospheric and magnetic(磁场的) protection, even the plastics and carbon-fibre materials would start to break up.Over the course of decades or centuries, the car will end up with its aluminium(铝) frame and hard glass parts—that’s assuming that none of them get destroyed in impacts with passing space rocks.
28.What can we infer from the first two paragraphs
A.Starman is now circling around the Earth in its orbit.
B.Starman has set out on its second trip around the Sun.
C.Starman has traveled 7.4 million kilometers after launch.
D.Starman still has a long way to go before getting to Mars.
29.How did McDowell manage to locate Starman
A.By keeping Starman under visual observation. B.By predicting its future orbit around the earth.
C.By seeking professional help from SpaceX. D.By analyzing data about the rocket’s movement.
30.The underlined word “tug” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to .
A.pull B.drive
C.resistance D.pressure
31.What will happen to Starman in decades or centuries
A.It is circling around Mars and will finally crash onto it.
B.It will finish its mission and return to SpaceX on earth.
C.Starman is likely reduced to at most its frame and glass.
D.SpaceX will try to recover it during its next space mission.

Scientists from the National University of Singapore studied how much time twins spent in natural spaces compared with each other and found that they shared a similar level of desire to be in nature.
“The reason we decided to study this in twins is that we could estimate heritability(遗传性)based on the genetic similarities in identical twins(100%)versus genetic similarities in non-identical twins(50%),” said Chia-chen Chang, who led the study.“If a trait(特性),such as the desire to be in nature,is clearly more similar between identical twins than non-identical twins, this will then suggest a trait is heritable.”
Using the TwinsUK registry, researchers surveyed 1,153 pairs of twins—identical and non-identical—about how they experienced nature. They were required to answer questions involving how frequently they visit natural spaces such as public parks and private gardens and rate their familiarity with nature. After comparing and analyzing the collected data, researchers found that identical twins were more similar to each other in their attitudes towards nature.
While previous studies have found that spending time in natural spaces improves mental well-being,this varies from person to person. For the first time, the researchers say, this study has indicated why that is by suggesting there is likely to be a genetic component in our preference for nature and our likelihood to visit natural spaces.
However, heritability declined with age, perhaps showing that environmental factors such as access to nature and green spaces bring about a love of the outdoors as one grows older. That is to say,a person’s desire to be in nature and how often they experience it are influenced by both genes and personal experiences. Those who live in urban environments without access to nature could end up having a lesser appreciation of it.Hence,it’s necessary that diverse urban planning is needed to provide access to natural spaces—and the benefits they offer—for all.
32.Why were twins chosen as subjects of the study
A.To acquire more accurate results. B.To confirm the previous studies.
C.To measure their gene similarity. D.To identify their specific hobbies.
33.How did the researchers carry out the study
A.By analyzing previous data. B.By referring to online resources.
C.By asking and answering questions. D.By doing an experiment in the lab.
34.What is special about this study
A.It takes genes into consideration.
B.It takes advantage of the Internet.
C.It provides a new insight into the role of nature.
D.It reveals the link between nature and mental health.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.One’s love for nature is invariable. B.City planning leaves much to be desired.
C.It may be a better choice to live in rural areas. D.Genes are the only factor in shaping one’s traits.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Travel can be a lifesaver. The right vacation at the right time can give new life to your whole year, not to mention your body and mind. But in today’s economy, with airlines adding new fees almost daily and ticket prices sharply on the rise, many have canceled travel as it is too expensive. 36
Early bird gets the deal.Travel experts say that there are certain times of day when more deals are available. 37 Early morning is when the fares tend to be lowest, but it is a good idea to check every five hours to track prices as they change throughout the day. Also,it’s a good idea to check again at 5 p.m.when the airlines are trying hardest to fill empty seats.
Avoid the crowds. 38 The lowest time of the year for travel is in the fall between Labor Day and Thanksgiving.Again,to try and fill more vacant(空着的) seats, the airlines will lower prices and offer better deals to get people to fly during this time of the year.
Right time,“wrong” place By flying to popular destinations at unpopular times, you can secure the best prices from travel companies and airlines. Here’s where flexibility in your planning can pay off.Going to the airline websites and planning your vacation around the best ticket prices offered can result in a fun,cost-effective vacation. 39
40 Many times the best deals on airfare can be found as part of a package rate. Most travel sites have package rates available and they are definitely worth a look.Often, the entire package(hotel, airfare, rental car) is cheaper than just the plane ticket on another site.
A.Package deals.
B.Save money,and save time.
C.Fly to popular places at unpopular times.
D.These deals are especially good on last minute package.
E.Airfares can change three times a day as airlines adjust their prices to fill up flights.
F.And maybe it can widen your horizons to a place you might never have considered.
G.However, with a few tricks, there are still many great deals to be had on air tickets.

My brother and I were in Orlando,Florida to witness our first space shuttle launch. The Discovery was scheduled to soar at 10:14 am on a blue sky September day.I’d seen it go up so many times on television, 41 now I was only minutes away from seeing it launch. And it’s the final demonstration of the nature of success:success takes 42 like a rocket.
Standing close to the space shuttle drives home one 43 point—the shuttle is the height of a 15-story building—it weighs 4.5 million pounds—and NASA is trying to lift it 200 miles off the ground. On TV the accomplishments look so much smaller,so much easier.
Crowds of people are standing around with you to watch the shuttle go.The countdown begins through the small 44 of hundreds of portable radios all tuned to the NASA station. It’s enough to get your heart 45 out of your chest.
When time is up,the 46 booster rockets are lit up and the eight explosive bolts followed. The first things you see are large white steam clouds exploding away.Through the steam, you see the fire power. Then the space shuttle begins to inch off the pad and climb its way 47 .Thousands upon millions of pounds of push can 48 lift the shuttle at all.But with ever increasing ease, the shuttle 49 up and roars into the sky, heading into space attaining a speed of over 17,000 mph.
It is within the first two minutes to launch the space shuttle that the great success lesson is 50 .Fact:85% of the shuttle’s fuel is consumed 51 the first 2 minutes just to get the 15-story super structure to its orbital altitude.
And that’s exactly how success takes off:the first steps you take towards launching a successful career are the hardest and will require enormous 52 of energy—a great big 53 .However,if you persist through the 54 period, which can seem almost 55 for quite some time, everything gets easier and easier and your achievements get bigger and bigger.

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming.Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way,the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared.Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway,at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa,we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons,Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain.A helpless expression flashed on his face.Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly(倔强地),“I can!” Certainly,he was stuck in his boyish way.Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and cheated about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest.Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers.Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn’t get up.This made them worried.“We’d think out a way to cheer him up,” Jack said.“Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird,” Berlin suggested.
“But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.
Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind:“Why not make a cane(拐杖) out of a young tree!”

第一节
Dear Mr Smith,
I am Li Hua,a student in your school.Seeing that lots of students are fond of astronomy,I am now writing to put forward the suggestion that our school set up an astronomy interest group.
Here are several reasons contributing to my suggestion.First and foremost, many students in our school are so keen on astronomy that even some of them dream of being an astronaut in the future. This group will be of great help to them. What’s more, such an interest group will certainly inspire students with enthusiasm to carry out some research about the universe, which will also do good to the study of astronomy.Last but not least,it can enrich students’ school life and I believe they can benefit a lot from it.
I sincerely hope that you can take my suggestion into consideration.Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Berlin thought it was a good idea. They set about making a cane for Grandpa immediately. The moment they chose a young tree of moderate size, they cut it down and then removed the branches and skins with a knife. With a small wood fastened on the top as a handle,a fashionable cane came into being. To make the handle feel comfortable, they wrapped a soft cloth around it.Berlin, full of innovative ideas, carved words Gift To Grandpa on the cane. What a cool cane!
Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa.Staring at the fancy cane,Grandpa was so happy with smiles on his face shining like a diamond. He thanked his grandsons for the wonderful gift with affection,“Your brothers are really great creators!” Supporting himself with the cane,Grandpa couldn’t contain himself and went to the forest step by step.Watching the trees and grass around,he emotionally said he would forever cherish the fond moments they were together in the forest.
