Striking Chinese gongs(锣) for 50 years,Liu Zibin,a 70-year-old folk artist in Tianjin Municipality,is eager to introduce the traditional musical instrument used in Chinese opera to more people.
Liu became addicted to Chinese opera in his childhood when his grandfather frequently took him to watch performances. At the age of 13,he joined Hebei bangzi training team.Hebei bangzi is one of the oldest types of Chinese opera in northern China, which became popular in the Qing Dynasty. It is a traditional Chinese opera combining music, vocals, dance and acrobatics(杂技).
“It took me hours to practice the basic skills of gongs,” he said.“This round piece of metal can help performers on the stage to express joy and sorrow when hit by a stick with different rhythms,so I must bear in mind all kinds of rhythms(节奏) for various situations. For example, striking gongs with a quick tempo(速度) can create a tense atmosphere for action scenes.”
In the 1960s and 1970s,the reorganization of opera troupes in Tianjin forced many members to switch their jobs to those in factories. Thanks to Liu’s brilliant skills,he was fortunate enough to go to one of the three biggest Beijing Opera troupes in Tianjin to continue his gong life.
Ten years ago,Liu retired, but he still goes to an opera tea house almost every afternoon to strike the gong for opera performances. In 2006,Hebei bangzi was listed into China’s national intangible cultural heritage. However,he worries about maintaining the art as fewer and fewer youngsters are learning percussion(敲打乐器),especially gongs.“People who strike the gong stay behind the scenes. It is hard for them to gain fame and fortune,” he said.Although many amateurs(业余爱好者) have learned from Liu over the years, some gave up easily.“It’s a bit dull and boring to continuously strike a gong for 40 minutes at the practice stage. It requires patience.Few can bear the hardship,” he said.
Various kinds of Chinese gongs are neatly placed at Liu’s home.He is waiting for more people to take over his career and spread the traditional Chinese art.

A couple of weeks ago my parents came to visit me in the southwest of France during my break. As a little surprise for them I planned a trip to a small village in the Pyrenees Mountains called Niaux to see the famous “Grotte de Niaux”.My dad told me so many stories about the famous “grottes” of southern France:Lascaux,Font-de-Gaume and the Cave of Niaux. These caves contain paintings drawn between 17,000 and 11,000 years ago!Advances in science and technology have enabled scientists and historians to date the paintings accurately by carbon dating(碳定年法) and discover the tools with which people used to draw the paintings,as well as the materials they used.My dad studied these caves when he was a college student, but he didn’t have the chance to see one personally. Therefore,I decided to change it!
Many caves that contain prehistoric paintings are no longer accessible to the public. The carbon dioxide that we breathe out and the harsh artificial lights quickly degrade the quality of the paintings, and for many caves, now visitors can only see reconstructions of the original paintings. However,Niaux is an exception.By limiting the number of people allowed in the cave at a time and limiting the artificial lights used to light the paintings, the paintings in Niaux have been well protected so that visitors can see the originals. They were unbelievable! We saw paintings of bison(北美野牛),mountain goats and deer carved on the walls as though they had been done yesterday. They were actually drawn around 14,000 years ago!
Many people believe that these paintings were drawn as part of an almost religious ritual(仪式),while others believe they represent the life experiences of the men and women who lived in these caves many years ago.Maybe we will never know for sure why the paintings were drawn, but one thing is for certain—those cavemen were far better at drawing than I am!
5.Why did the author’s father tell him many stories about the “grottes”
A.The author asked him to do so.
B.It was his father’s duty.
C.His father was interested in them.
D.They weren’t known to the author.
6.What can visitors only see of the original paintings in many caves
A.Shadows. B.Copies.
C.Models. D.Introductions.
7.What makes the paintings in Niaux unbelievable
A.Good protection. B.Great skill.
C.Good quality. D.Dark light.
8.We can know from the text that .
A.this was the second time that the author’s father had visited Niaux
B.visitors don’t know the material used to draw the pictures in Niaux
C.only the carbon dioxide people breathe out degraded the quality of the paintings
D.visitors don’t know clearly why the paintings were drawn

For more than 4,000 years, people in Asia have used acupuncture(针灸) to treat illnesses. 1 Studies have shown that acupuncture is useful for different conditions. However,it is not for everyone. If you choose to see an acupuncturist, discuss it with your doctor first and find an expert.
2 It can be used if you have a headache or back pain. Some doctors use acupuncture along with normal treatments for high blood pressure or stress.Doctors have even used acupuncture to stop pain during an operation.
People who practice acupuncture must take courses to learn how to do it correctly. 3 During the treatment, the patient usually lies down and needles(针) are stuck into certain points of his body. There are hundreds of possible points and each one has a certain effect on the body.
Acupuncture needles are made of metal and about as thick as a human hair. They normally go less than 1 cm into the skin. The patient rests for a short time and then the needles are removed.Acupuncture usually doesn’t hurt. There is also a different form of acupuncture called “acupressure” where you don’t need needles. 4
Chinese medicine teaches us that all acupuncture points are located along pathways called meridians(经络).Each of these meridians carries energy, which the Chinese call “qi”,to certain points of the body. 5 They have not found any fact that these pathways of energy are really present.
A.Acupuncture can control pain and sickness.
B.Discuss acupuncture with your family members.
C.Doctors just use their fingers to press the points of the body.
D.Some people feel relaxed after receiving acupuncture treatment.
E.It is part of the ancient practice of traditional Chinese medicine.
F.In many places, only doctors are allowed to perform acupuncture.
G.However, doctors today are not sure how acupuncture really works.

Leung Long-kong,89,might not be a household name, but people around the world have admired his work, thanks to the award-winning film In the Mood for Love, which features 23 colorful qipao made by Leung.
Starting to make qipao at the age of 13,Leung witnessed the gradual shift of qipao from a dress of ethnic Manchu origins to a Chinese fashion icon(标志).The unique dress, which used to have a straight skirt covering a woman’s body, except for her head, hands and feet, became more form-fitting in the 1950s after it was brought to Hong Kong by a group of Shanghai tailors.
The glory days of qipao in the 1950s and 1960s,Hong Kong faded in a time of mass production of ready-to-wear clothing.“Qipao used to be so popular,” Leung says, adding that the dress was an everyday outfit(装束) among Hong Kong women, from the less well-off to women at the highest levels of society.“Now,nobody is wearing them except on grand and happy occasions.”
With less than 10 senior qipao tailors left in Hong Kong, young designers are trying to figure out a way to pass on the legacy.Fashion designer Mary Yu,41,set up her own qipao brand in 2016.Yu says,“I felt I should tap into Chinese culture. After a period of wearing Chanel all the time, there will be a day when one looks back to traditional Chinese culture, whose elegance has been inherited(继承) for thousands of years. It is about finding the stuff that exists in your genes and suits you best.”
In the constantly developing fashion industry, qipao is catching up with the times.Zippers, digital print patterns and new materials have been introduced.Bolder ideas like 3D printed qipao have also become a reality.

While the arts can’t stop virus or the social unrest we see in the world today, they can give us insight into the choices we make when moving through crises and chaos. The arts invite everyone to think in new ways.
We often experience works of art as something that’s pleasing to our senses without a full understanding of the creative effort.Great art often shows us contradictions and crises, and we can learn a great deal from their resolutions(解决).Through our understanding of art,we can gain a deeper understanding of how we might overcome our own challenges. In understanding extremes of contrast,we can see the beauty in art with themes that are not simply pleasing for their magnificent features or qualities.
Beethoven offers a wonderful example of moving artfully through crises and chaos. He composed his Symphony No.9 as his hearing loss became more and more pronounced. The opening of the symphony seems to come out of nowhere, from near silence in the opening to a full expression of what many consider to be the joy of freedom and universal brotherhood with Schiller’s Ode to Joy(欢乐颂).Beethoven appears to have created a work of art that not only frees him from his personal struggles, but one that also speaks to the joy of living together in peace and harmony.
Have a dialogue between the two opposing parts and you will find that they always start out fighting each other until we come to an appreciation of difference—a oneness of the two opposing forces. The arts offer many lessons that can help us gain the knowledge we need to move more confidently in today’s competitive and uncertain environment. An openness to arts-based solutions will give you more control over your future.

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal.Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust.Even with people at work,it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”,usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job.In many European countries—like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures.I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion;instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better,I realized that they thought I was talking too much.In my own culture,we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems.Certainly,English and German cultures share similar values;however,Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude.In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However,if we can understand them better,a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance to us to learn from each other.
