Whether you are hoping to relax or you are looking forward to staying active in vacation, seeking out great hikes is a good choice. If you are planning a trip to southern California, or you live in San Diego, now it is time to search for new hiking trails (路线). Here are some of the most popular hikes in San Diego.
Cedar Greek Falls
For this hike, you’ll hike from the Cedar Creek Falls to the Devil’s Punch Bowl, which is a pool at the base of Cedar Greek Falls. It can really heat up in the summer, and it is hard to hike, so be sure to pack lots of water and protein-filled snacks.

The peak is in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and you’ll see plenty of snow-capped trees if you do this hike in the winter. There are 37 trails in the state park, but you’ll want to stick to Azalea Glen Loop. It’s a difficult sever mile hike that will bring you right to Cuyamaca Peak.
Cowles Mountain
It is well known that Cowles Mountain is the highest point in San Diego—so it’s worth visiting for the fact that you can see Mexico from the peak. The three-mile hike is quite difficult. If you are willing to wake up before the sun, Cowles Mountain is a beautiful spot to watch the sunrise. It's one of San Diego’s most popular hikes, so starting early might also help avoid the crowds.
Swami’s Beach
Take the trail from Swami’s Beach to Cardiff Beach and you will experience impressive ocean views and the smooth sound of waves crashing onto the sand. As an easy out-and-back hike, the path is accessible (可进入的) from Swami’s Beach and is about three miles in total.

Recently whenever I turned on my computer or my mobile phone, news about the great effect of Hurricane Harvey(哈维飓风)on thousands of people caught my eye. I saw many unfortunate events. However, there was also lots of bright news that showed the goodness of mankind. As a reporter, I reported many human-interest stories when doing my job, That’s why the story about the guys in the bakery(面包店)caught my eye.
When the workers at a Mexican bakery chain in Houston were trapped inside the building for two days, they didn't sit there feeling sorry for themselves. They used their time wisely after flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. While waiting for the eventual rescue that came on Monday morning, the four workers decided to make as many loaves of bread as possible for people around the neighborhood. They talked to their manager about their plan over the phone and the manager agreed.
The flood water rose in the street outside. They took advantage of their emergency power supply to bake bread. They used more than 4,200 pounds of flour(面粉)to create hundreds of loaves and sheets of sweet bread. Although the water kept rising, they continued baking to help more people. By the time the manager managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that they took the loaves to lots of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods.
The store manager, Brian Alvarado, told The Independent, “They've done more than they should have done. And what they had done has lit a light for people. I feel lucky to have them work in the bakery.”

People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans(寿命)that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors(肿瘤)developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.
According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.
“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous(癌变的),large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named. "Peto’s. paradox(悖论) ". Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive.
The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers spreading or even developing in the first place.
“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”
8.Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer
A. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.
B. They have a rather large body size.
C. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing.
D. Their genes suffer no DNA damage.
9.According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals
A. The huge body mass. B. Deadly tumors.
C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage.
10.What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to
A. The risk of cancer is not related to body size.
B. Larger animals have protection from TP53.
C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones.
D. The larger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have.
11.What can be concluded from the passage
A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer.
B. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people.
C. The extra copies of elephants’ genes are used to cure cancer patients.
D. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53.
Doctors say you had better use it before you lose it. The more you sit each day, the more chance you have of getting sick.
Richard Rosenkranz of Kansas State University was among the researchers. He said people who sat for long periods were at great risk of diseases when compared with those who sat less. He said that was especially true for some chronic (慢性的) diseases.
Richard Rosenkranz studied the relationship between sitting and chronic diseases in middle-aged Australian men. He worked with researchers from the University of Western Sydney. They examined the health records of more than 63,000 men from New South Wales. The men were between the ages of 45 and 65. The men reported about what diseases they had, or did not have. And they kept record of the amount of time each day that they sat.
The study also showed that exercising every morning for 30 minutes did not reduce the health risk if you spend the next eight hours sitting at the desk. Mr. Rosenkranz said it was important to make sure you exercise. But he said it was also important to find ways not to sit so much during the day.
Many jobs today require sitting and working at the desk all day. James Levine works at the Mayo Clinic in the United Sates. He suggests working while standing at high table some of the time instead of sitting at a desk. Dr. Levine also suggests standing while using the telephone or eating. Or he advises walking with the people you work with for an on-foot meeting. And he notes that if you spend more time on your feet, you may have muscle activity that helps burn fats and sugars in your body.
12.What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph imply
A. Doctors should treat all the patients well.
B. Doctors should make use of every method.
C. One should value his health before he loses it.
D. One should depend on himself to keep healthy.

It was freezing cold at dusk on such a winter day. And the sky was dark. He was walking down an empty street where there were no passers-by, because people must have been at home for warmth. Cory was walking to a crossroad when suddenly he came across a little boy stuck in the middle of the road alone like him.
Cory had meant to turn a blind eye to him at first. But the boy’s situation worried him. He approached the boy, asking, “Hey! Why are you alone here Where is your mother ” “I want to find my mama and papa. Please take me home,” the boy replied, bursting into tears. Cory led him away from the crossroad. Then, he asked worriedly, “How did you come here What’s your name ”
“I’m Simon. I was playing with my dog. The dog ran away, and I ran after him for a long distance. But when I wanted to go back home, I lost my way,” cried the boy. Feeling pity for the boy, Cory made up his mind to help the boy. He couldn’t have the little boy staying here alone.
Attempting to look for his home, Cory took the little boy to different neighborhoods. But things didn’t go that smoothly as he had expected. It was getting darker and darker, and Cory thought he had to help Simon find his home. He knocked on every door, but without luck. Worn out and starving, he realized Simon must be very hungry. 32.答案:significantly; with; to find; playing; hobbies; personal; is; that/which; But; has changed/has been changing
故填with。
故填to find。
or是井列连词,空处需用动名词与collecting model cars保持一致,作介词短语such as的宾语。
故填is。
故填that/which。
故填But。
故填has changed/has been changing。

After a while, a police car pulled up and Cory waved to it with excitement. Two policemen came out of the police car and Cory couldn’t wait to explain what had happened to Simon. Then, the policemen checked for any missing person’s report without any delay. Meanwhile, they drove the two of them around the nearby neighborhood one by one to search for Simon’s home. Finally, they successfully contacted the little boy’s parents. Cory was more than glad to see Simon s reunion with his parents.
Seeing the reunion of Simon and his parents, Cory was deeply touched. He thought of his own parents, the warm home and his mother’s delicious supper. He thought his parents must have been as worried as Simon’s and they must have been anxiously searching everywhere for their son right now. The more he thought about it, the more guilty he felt for what he had done to his mother. All his anger died away in an instant and he rushed in the direction of his home.
