(2021·重庆市巴蜀中学高三二模)Life began in Hawaii in 1985 for musical celebrity Bruno Mars. His dad, Pete, was a percussionist (打击乐手) and his mom, Bernadette, was a singer and dancer, so it seemed natural that Bruno would one day become a musician. At age 4, Bruno officially joined in a show, and audiences adored him. That early introduction to show business helped him develop confidence. He says, “Performing from such a young age just got me so comfortable on stage. Growing up performing—that was normal for me.”
After graduating from high school, Bruno decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. It wasn't easy, though. He was used to performing regularly as a musician in Honolulu, Hawaii. But LA's competitive atmosphere was nothing like that in Hawaii. “It's not like in movies, where you walk into a record company and you're given all these great songs. You have to write what the world is going to want to hear. I learned that the hard way here in LA,” Bruno said.
Though the enticement to give up was great, he never did. Bruno found that he could make money and become established by writing songs for famous singers. In 2010 Bruno caught a lucky break when he was asked to record one of his songs. It rocketed to the top of the charts. That same year he released his first original solo single, Just the Way You Are, which also hit number one. The song's success brought Bruno instant fame and star status.
Since then Bruno Mars has received numerous music awards and honors. He has sold more than 130 million records, making him one of the best selling artists ever. Many of his fans and peers consider him a musical genius and one of the world's best performers.
24.Why was Bruno's career development hard in LA
A.He was lacking in confidence.
B.Competition in LA was fiercer.
C.He didn't perform regularly in LA.
D.The audience wasn't attracted by him.
25.What does the underlined word “enticement” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Instruction. B.Command.
C.Inspiration. D.Appeal.
26.What made Bruno's career take off
A.Famous singers' songs written by him.
B.His rich experience in performing on stage.
C.Songs he was required to record for himself.
D.Famous singers' direction and recommendation.
27.What's the main idea of this passage
A.Awards won by Bruno Mars.
B.Popular songs by Bruno Mars.
C.Bruno Mars' struggle in LA.
D.Bruno Mars' road to fame.

(2022·山东省济南市历城第二中学高三上学期考试(B))In June, 11 year old Nigerian ballet dancer Anthony Mmesoma Madu was filmed barefoot, spinning and leaping gracefully in the air and landing in concrete, rain puddles (水坑). Just a few short months later, he has become an Internet star and gained a famous scholarship in America.
Madu thought he was being recorded for a study session by his ballet instructor, instead, the short video of him practicing his moves was posted on social media and has been shared widely across the world, with some of his fans including Hollywood actors Cynthia Erivo and Viola Davis.
His dancing also caught the attention of Cynthia Harvey, the artistic director of the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of Dance in New York. Harvey was so impressed by his talent that she tracked him down and offered him a scholarship with the American Ballet Theatre where he will attend a summer school in 2021.
Madu says his interest in ballet developed after watching Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses, a 2006 cartoon about 12 princesses who share a passion for the dance. “When I was watching the cartoon, I told my mum that I want to do ballet.” he said.
He eventually got the chance to learn the dance after relocating to Ojo, a suburb (郊区) of Lagos with his mother, where they met Daniel Owoseni Ajala, founder of the Leap of Dance Academy. Ajala founded the dance academy in 2017 and has been teaching ballet for free to children who are unable to pay for a dance education since then.
When the self taught instructor learned of Madu's desire to dance, he said he encouraged Madu's mother to let him sign up. It was during one of their sessions that he recorded Madu's dance video, but he never imagined that it would circulate rapidly.
“The video wasn't something we imagined to come out the way it did. It was just something that was supposed to show corrections of movements. It was bigger than I imagined, and I started getting calls. Celebrities were posting us,” he said.

(2022·广东省高三摸底联考)The British poet Matthew Byrne moved to Beijing in 2013 and felt that the capital city's poetry scene was lacking. His obsession (痴迷) for starting poetry events led to the foundation of the Spittoon Collective in May 2015. “At that time, the literary activity in Beijing was The Bookworm based in Sanlitun,” Byrne says.
While some of Beijing's literary institutions would go on to close in the fall of 2019, Spittoon would continue to grow as a community for poets and writers, as well as musicians and others in the creative scene.
Byrne describes the Spittoon Collective as a platform for people to share ideas, from literary works to different forms of art, with projects developing from the creative energy within the community.
Spittoon originally started as a poetry night at the Mado Bar in Dongcheng District's Baochao Hutong. Byrne says,“In Beijing, you have these wonderful hutongs, ancient structures where you can walk down and visit cool bars, so I thought it would be good to have a poetry event as it seemed like poetry belonged naturally to this area.”
He adds, “The objective now is to discover Chinese voices and broadcast them to the rest of the world. We create a kind of theme park like atmosphere where every Thursday is occupied by a different literary style or art form.”
The readings would mainly be in English, but with an international community, a new section called “Poetry in Translation” was started, which featured works in Chinese, French, Arabic, Russian, Spanish and other languages.
Joining organized activities like Spittoon can be a major help for those caught up in a boring life. And it's especially important for the people who have moved to China as they need to build new relationships while living in a different country.

B.It was set up in 2013 in Beijing.

33.Why did Byrne start the Spittoon Collective in Baochao Hutong
A.To attract students' love of poetry.
B.To expand China's literature globally.
C.To make Beijing's hutongs famous.
D.To combine poetry with the hutong.
34.What effect would the Spittoon Collective have on Chinese culture
A.Beneficial. B.Negative.
C.Challenging. D.Controversial.
35.What is the author's attitude to the Spittoon Collective
A.Unclear. B.Intolerant.

(2021·福建福州市高三三模)Ms Hart stood in front of her class on the very first day of school and told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her students, saying that she loved them all the same, treating them all alike. And that was impossible because there in front of her, right on the third row, was a little boy named George.
Ms Hart had watched George the year before and noticed he was seldom engaged in school games, that he always wore torn dusty clothes and that he constantly needed a bath. As a whole, George was unpleasant.
When Ms Hart was required to review each child's records, she put George's off until last. But his file turned out a surprise. His first grade teacher wrote, “George is a bright child with a ready laugh. He is a joy to be around.”
Another teacher wrote, “George is an excellent student well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a serious illness and life at home must be a struggle.” The next wrote. “George continues to work hard but his mother's death has been hard on him. Since his father doesn't show much interest, his home life will soon, affect him if some steps aren't taken.”
The last record wrote, “George is silent and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class. He could become a problem.”
By now Ms Hart realized the problem and Christmas was coming fast. Her children brought her presents, all in beautiful ribbon and bright paper, except for George's, which was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper of a scissored grocery bag. Ms Hart took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a toy bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one quarter full of perfume. She stopped the children's laughter when she declared how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and wearing some of the perfume behind the other wrist.
George stayed behind just long enough to say, “Ms Hart, today you smelled just like my mom used to.”

1.续写词数应为150左右;

After George left, Ms Hart decided to care for him like a mother. From then on, Ms Hart paid particular attention to George. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded and he showed much interest in study. By the end of the year, George had become one of the excellent children in the class, which gave Ms Hart a surprise.
Many years later Ms Hart attended George's wedding, wearing the very bracelet he gave her. She used the bracelet and the lovely perfume which were the Christmas present of that year. At the wedding ceremony, she met the man with good manners. He said to her, “Thank you, Ms Hart. Today you smelled just like my mom used to.” Ms Hart, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, “George, you were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I'm so proud that today I can be your mother!”Unit 5【单元测试 · 提升卷】
