三、阅读理解
In American history, Benjamin Franklin was very famous. He was a leader of the American Revolution against English rule. He was also a scientist, inventor and writer. And he was even well-known for his proverbs (谚语). Some of them are still used today, like this one: Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. And another one is “A penny saved is a penny earned”, which means that money should not be wasted.
Americans like to use proverbs, which have deep meanings. Here is an interesting collection of proverbs that Americans use. Some people say “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”. This means you love someone even more when he or she is far away.
Another proverb says, “Love is blind.” In other words, when you are in love with someone, you may refuse to see anything bad about that person.
Here is another popular saying about love: The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Some people believe that a woman can win a man's love if she prepares his favourite foods.
Some people only want to love someone who is very good-looking. You might tell them that beauty is only skin deep. Your girlfriend may be lovely to look at, but she may also have some bad qualities (品质). Or maybe your boyfriend is a wonderful person, but not good-looking. So what a person looks like is not really important.
In the end, we must say, “All good things must come to an end.” Make another collection of proverbs is you like. Anyway, “Actions speak louder than words.”

People in different countries behave in different ways. What is polite or “good manners” in one country may not be polite in another. For example, Americans usually greet someone they know by saying “Hi”, “Hello” or “Good morning”.We Chinese, usually greet each other by saying “How are you ” or sometimes “Have you eaten ” or “Where are you going ” But it is bad manners to greet an American by asking him where he is going or if he has eaten. In Italy or in the south of France, a man will greet a woman by kissing her on the back of her hand or on both cheeks. But in China and other Asian countries, kissing on someone is thought to be bad manners.
Take another example, belching (打嗝) during a meal in America is thought very rude while in parts of China and the Arab (阿拉伯人) world, belching is a way of telling your friend that you are enjoying your meal.
There are also different ways of paying a visit to other's home, standing in line, introducing someone to other people and giving thanks. For example, if an American brings someone a present, he hopes it will be opened in front of him. But we Chinese don't usually open the present until he has left.
What are the rules of good manners then Well, there are too many rules to be written down here. The most important one would be: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Different countries have different ideas about manners— how you behave when you are eating. In England, table manners are important. Good table manners in England are as follows:
How to sit: You should sit up straight in your chair. It is not a good idea to lean (倾斜) forwards or backwards. When you eat, you should not lean towards the plate, but bring the knife, fork or spoon towards you. At the same time, do not put your elbow on the table, nor reach over someone's plate for something.
Your fingers: English people normally don't pick food up with their fingers when they are eating main courses. If you are not sure, the safest way is to use your knife or fork. There are, however, some foods that are usually eaten with fingers. They include pizza, sandwiches, burgers, crisps and fruit.
Your mouth: It is not polite to talk with your mouth full of food, or to eat with your mouth open. And if possible, do not make any noises. Never lick (舔) your plate after eating.
How much to eat: It is possible to eat food that you have been offered so a clear plate is a good plate. It shows that you enjoyed the food. If you can't finish everything and you need to leave a little, that's also okay. You could say something like “That was very nice, thank you, but I'm just too full to eat another bite.”

Table manners are how to behave when you eat a meal. They include how to handle knives, forks and spoons and how to eat in a polite way. To behave well abroad, you are supposed to know some table manners.
EATING MANNERS
Japan:It is “perfectly” Okay to slurp when you eat noodles. Unlike making big noises, slurping slightly is not rude. Japanese also say it tastes better if you slurp.
Russia:Your wrists should be placed on the edge of the table while eating, fork in left hand, and knife in the right. It is not good manners to rest them on your lap. Keep your elbows off the table. Leave some food on your plate to show that the host has given you enough to eat.
France:Never discuss money or religion over dinner. What is different from the manners in Russia is that finishing everything on your plate is considered good manners.
Mexico:Whenever you catch the eyes of someone who's eating, even a stranger, it's good manners to say “provecho”, which means enjoy. In Mexico, dining is more than a meal. It's a social occasion—lunches are quick and suppers can last for hours. Where you sit matters in the country. Before you get seated, look for place cards, or wait until the host seats you. And you must say “enjoy your meal” before you leave the table.
DRINKING MANNERS
America:If you empty a bottle into someone's glass, it obliges that person to buy the next bottle. It's polite to put the last drops into your own glass.
Australia:In a pub it's usual to buy a round of drinks for everyone in your group. When it's your turn, say “It's my round.” When it's their round, they will buy it for you. Don't leave before you've bought a round.
Japan:Don't fill your own glass of alcohol. Instead, you should pour for others and wait for them to do it for you.
