Pumpkin carving at Halloween is a family tradition.
Every October, we visit a local farm.
In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to find the biggest pumpkin.
My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child, I have an advantage. Last year, I carried an 85-pounder home.
This year, it's hard to tell whether my pumpkin or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, is the bigger one.
Unfortunately, we forgot to weigh them before hollowing them out, but I was determined to prove that mine was the biggest.
All of us were busy working at the kitchen table, while my mom filmed this annual event.
I still don't understand why I thought sticking my head inside the pumpkin would solve the problem, but it seemed like a brilliant idea at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening.
At first, my head got jammed just above my eyes, but I didn't want to quit, so I continued pushing, and then my nose prevented me from going any further.
Finally, I managed to put my whole head inside it, like a cork forced into a bottle.
As I stood up, the huge pumpkin rested on my shoulders.
My excitement didn't last long. The pumpkin was too heavy.
"I'm going to put it down now," I said, and with Jason's help, I bent over the table to give the pumpkin a place to rest.
But as I tried to pull my head out, I realized it was much harder to get out than it was to get in.
When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way again.
I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. I started to panic.
"I can't get out!" I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.
