Ben
This story takes place in a family of teachers.
After school, Ben was playing basketball in the living room and accidentally threw the ball towards a vase on the shelf.
The vase fell to the ground, shattering a large piece of it.
To Ben's dismay, this vase was not just an ordinary decoration, but an antique heirloom passed down from the 18th century.
It was also his mother's favorite possession.
In an attempt to cover up his dreadful act, the frightened boy hurriedly glued the pieces together and put the vase back in its place.
Since his mother wiped the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks on it that evening.
To her surprise, the repair work was done extremely well.
During dinner, she asked her son if he had broken the vase.
Fearing punishment, the boy, suddenly inspired, claimed that it was the neighbor's cat that jumped in through the window and he couldn't get it out despite his efforts.
It ran around the living room and eventually knocked the vase down from the shelf.
His mother knew very well that her son was lying, as she always closed all the windows before going to work in the morning and opened them again after returning from work.
However, in the face of her son's nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben's mother remained calm.
She realized that she shouldn't blame and punish her son solely for lying.
She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study immediately.
The boy thought he would now be punished, but as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mother became.
In the study, her mother's face was bathed in the light, appearing calm and without any signs of anger.
As she saw her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him a piece.
The mother said, "This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a cat that can open windows!"
Ben realized that his made-up story was full of holes and blushed with embarrassment.
"You know, all the windows were closed," she said.
The mother seemed to see through him, but she continued calmly, "Aren't you imaginative to tell me about this amazing cat "
The boy still refused to give in. He held his head high and insisted that it was the cat that broke the vase.
Instead of revealing the truth, the mother pulled him close and pressed two more chocolates into his hand, saying, "This is a reward for your perfect repair work."
With a few chocolates in his hand, the boy's bad mood disappeared.
He wished the ground would open up and swallow him!
"Mom, I'm sorry. It wasn't the cat, it was me," he stammered out the truth, daring not to look his mother in the eye.
"If that's the case, then I have to take back these chocolates," the mother said in a serious voice.
"But your honesty deserves a reward - a box of chocolates."
The mother suddenly hugged the boy to her chest and gently said to him, "My little sweetheart, honesty is more valuable than any antique."
