Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores. “The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,” she says. “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.
Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. “We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.”
4. What do we know about Abby Jaramillo
A. She used to be a health worker. B. She grew up in a low-income family.
C. She owns a fast food restaurant. D. She is an initiator of Urban Sprouts.
5. What was a problem facing Jaramillo at the start of the program
A. The kids’ parents distrusted her. B. Students had little time for her classes.
C. Some kids disliked garden work. D. There was no space for school gardens.

Many people confuse hard-working people with workaholics(工作狂). How could a person tell that he/she is a workaholic A workaholic works long hours, at the expense of personal relationships and health. When not working, they’re thinking about work. Work influences their mood: when work is going well, they’re up; when work is going less well, they’re down.
Working, or simply being busy, can be a hard habit to break. When workaholics aren’t busy working—or doing something to promote their work—they feel anxious and guilty. They hang onto jobs for dear life and do everything they can to make sure they’re essential.
There is a link between health problems and workaholism. Just because work itself is a respectable pursuit(追求) doesn’t mean that an addiction to it is any less damaging than other sorts of addictions. A number of studies show that workaholism has been associated with a wide range of health problems, such as anxiety and heart disease.
Besides health problems, being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well. A study published in the American Journal of Family Therapy found that working too much negatively influenced an employee’s marriage. This isn’t surprising, since if you’re married to your work, it can be difficult to be married to anything, or anyone, else. There have also been studies looking at the influence of workaholic parents on their children and the news isn’t good. Adult children of workaholic fathers experienced more depression and anxiety and a weaker sense of self.
However, there are also many positive aspects to working hard and to an increasing devotion to career. Hard work can bring great rewards. For many, it’s how they develop feelings of self-worth and confidence and purpose. If you have a workaholic in your life, you might point out the things he or she is missing out on while at work, whether it’s a child’s soccer game, a good book, or a yoga class. Seek to understand why the person feels the need to work so much and support them in finding a solution.
8. What can we infer about workaholics
A. They put work in the first place.
B. They usually have life outside work.
C. They often get pleasure from work.
D. They win respect from their workmates.
9. What are Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about
A. Bad influences of workaholism.
B. Reasons for being workaholics.
C. How people deal with their addictions.
D. How hard-working people differ from workaholics.
10. What can we do to help workaholics in life
A. Force them to join family activities.
B. Reward them for their hard work.
C. Help them find self-worth and confidence.
D. Try to understand and support them.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards working hard
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Curious.
【答案】8. A 9. A 10. D 11. B
【解析】

Work influences their mood: when work is going well, they’re up; when work is going less well, they’re down.(工作狂长时间工作,以牺牲人际关系和健康为代价。不工作的时候,他们想着工作。工作影响他们的情绪:当工作进展顺利时,他们会情绪高涨; 当工作进展不太顺利时,他们就会情绪低落。)”可推知工作狂把工作放在第一位。故选A。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段和第四段中的“health problems, damaging, addiction, negative effects”等关键词可知,这两段主要讲工作狂的一些负面影响,故选A。

Next time you raise an eyebrow(眉毛) at the views of your friend, brother, sister or colleague, remember they could be helping to make you smarter. New research shows that intelligence is not fixed but can be improved throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually challenging careers. The study challenges the commonly held belief that intelligence is fixed by the age of about 18.
Scientific consensus(共识) suggests intelligence is controlled by genes, with environmental factors such as schooling and nutrition playing a part up to this age. After this point, IQ scores become steady. But James Flynn, professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, argues that people can “upgrade” their intelligence throughout their lives. He believes intellectual stimulation(刺激) from other people is important as the“brain seems to be rather like a muscle-the more you use it, the stronger it gets”. However, the opposite is also true-so people who share a home or workplace with their intellectually challenged risk seeing their IQ level nosedive as a result.
Professor Flynn analysed US intelligence tests from the last 65 years and created new IQ “age tables“. He found a bright ten-year-old with brothers and sisters of average intelligence will suffer a five to ten point IQ disadvantage compared to a similar child with equality bright brothers and sisters. However, children with a low IQ could get six to eight points by having brighter brothers and sisters and special educational treatment to help pull them up.
Professor Flynn concluded that although genetics and early life experiences determine about 80% of intelligence, the remaining 20% is linked to lifestyle. This means people can raise their IQ,or allow it to fall, by ten points or more.He suggests the best way to improve IQ levels is to socialise with bright friends, and find an intellectually challenging job.
12. According to the text, it is commonly believed that_______.
A. people’s IQ level falls as they age B. it is wise to share family members’ views
C. adults cannot improve their intelligence D. doing something challenging is good for one’s intelligence
13. What does the underlined word “nosedive” in paragraph 2 most probably mean
A. Differ. B. Develop. C. Change. D. Fall.
14. Which of the following can help improve one’s intelligence according to Professor Flynn
A. Making many friends. B. Staying with smart people.
C. Doing exercise every day. D. Learning from brothers or sisters.
15. What is the best title for the text

Li Hua
【答案】Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you something that I found during the Spring Festival. I found many people addicted to their smart phones at the family feasts. When I told jokes, no one gave me a response. Though we sat just face to face, I felt the largest distance.
Smart phones indeed change the way of communication, but they also distance us from others. It’s embarrassing that when people are sitting together, everyone looks down and focuses on playing their phones, ignoring others.
As far as I’m concerned, we shouldn’t let smart phones control our life. What we should do is put down the phone and cherish the people around us.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

It was the Easter holidays, and school was closed for two weeks. For me, the Easter holidays were so boring that it was impossible to find something fun to do. My mom had suggested that I do some studies since the promotion test was coming up. However, I didn’t follow my mother’s suggestion. Instead, I went outside to seek out my friends to play with. When I had successfully contacted some of my friends, none of them seemed to be much in a playful mood, but one friend Jimmy agreed to play with me. He suggested we go down to the river and just relax there. The river was not far from my home, and we arrived there quickly.
Just relaxing on the river bank with nothing but some waste logs (木头) , it wasn’t fun for us at first. Clearly what was on our minds was to jump into the river and just take a swim in the clear cool water. So we took off our clothes down to our underwear and walked into the shallow part of the water. The water was truly cool and refreshing and we were starting to have fun then, playing and laughing, as we splashed the cool water onto each other’s faces. Then we started to chase each other around on the river bank and then we ran straight into the river. We were having so much fun that we didn’t notice danger was around the corner.
Before Jimmy could know it, and before he could do anything to keep his balance, he lost his footing on a tree branch, which was in the shallow part of the water, and slipped, bringing his whole entire body into the deep water. He tried to resurface from the water but found it extremely hard to keep his head above the water.
注意:
1.续写词数应为80词左右。
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was scared to see him struggling in the water but I knew I must rescue him. I took a deep breath to keep calm. Looking around, I found a waste log, so I threw it to him immediately and asked him to hold it. At the same time I yelled for help, hoping someone could come to our rescue. Luckily, my mom heard my cries, rushed out of the house and raced towards us. She jumped into the water without hesitation and reached out her hands to pull him. Several neighbors also quickly joined the rescue.
Finally, Jimmy was pulled out of water by my mom and the neighbors.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Finally, Jimmy was pulled out of water by my mom and the neighbors. He was saved, pale and shivering. After a while, Jimmy recovered from fright and thanked my mom and the neighbours. We hugged each other in tears. I thought my mom would scold me. But she just held us in her arms tightly. She warned us it was dangerous to swim in the river alone. Both of us felt ashamed and promised never to do that again. This was a really special Easter, one I would never forget. For Jimmy, he had a narrow escape from drowning. For me, I felt the act of kindness of my neighbours.

B Reasons for being workaholics.
C. How people deal with their addictions.
D. How hard-working people differ from workaholics.
10 What can we do to help workaholics in life
A. Force them to join family activities.
B. Reward them for their hard work.
C. Help them find self-worth and confidence.
D. Try to understand and support them.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards working hard
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Curious.

A. Bright People Make You Smarter B. Genes Determines Intelligence
C. Brain Is Like Muscle D. Many Factors Influence Intelligence
