I can’t miss the little old lady with her kerchief (方头巾) on her head, a black umbrella blowing all over. I can tell she is freezing. She is standing at a bus stop, and I’m driving by, late for my early morning shift. I decide to stop and offer her a ride.
Of course, she declines, but when I ask again and insist, finally, she gets in the car. I take her to her destination, and by the time she gets out of my car, she is smiling and thanks me. I was late for work that day, but I was so glad that I stopped. That was 40 years ago, and the beginning of a new habit, one that continues when I’m out driving in bad weather.
If there’s someone at a bus stop, especially if it’s an elderly person waiting at off hours and in bad weather, I will pull over and ask if they need a ride.
Once, a young doctor jumped in. She had finished a long shift and had been waiting and waiting at the bus stop. She had no hesitation and, for the first time, I was able to help someone who performs miracles (奇迹) on a daily basis. That felt good.
But the best part of my ride offers is the conversation. I do tend to ask a lot of questions: where are you from, where are you going, family, background, pets and whatever else comes to mind. Surprisingly, everyone wants to chat. We are usually laughing by the time the ride is over. “What a shame!” I often think when they hop out, as the stories were just getting started.
Now, as retirement (退休) approaches, I believe I have found my calling. I will be happy to join a community driving program to take people to one appointment or another-or perhaps just to the coffee shop to sit and listen for an hour.
As the years pass, perhaps I will be the one standing at the bus stop. Perhaps there will be somebody who rolls down a window and offers me a seat for a little ride. I will continue to take that leap of faith in the kindness of strangers.

Has “dopamine dressing” taken over your social media It’s considered to be one of the most talked about fashion trends for 2023.
First created by American fashion psychologist Dawnn Karen in her book Dress Your Best Life in 2020, dopamine dressing-to put it simply-is dressing for joy. Through the collision (碰撞) of brightness and purity of colors, the dressing is aimed to boost joyful emotions for people.
Science has proved long ago that different colors have different psychological effects on people. They can change the way we feel temperature and our mood. For example, colors with high saturation (饱和度) and brightness give people the sense of a lively atmosphere. In contrast, colors like black, white and grey may bring a sense of depression instead.
With this color science in mind, fashion brands have gradually tended toward vibrant colors, injecting (注入) a bit of vitality (活力) into the runway. For example, Versace, an Italian luxury brand, added dopamine dressing in their 2021 design to deliver positive energy to the world.
But the pandemic has turned dopamine dressing into a fashion statement for daily life. For the last few years, the pandemic has put everything into question. While some people have fallen into anxiety and depression, others started to rethink their identities and what they wore.
“Typically, we’re dressing for external factors-the weather, other people, special events. During the pandemic, there was a change that occurred. Since no one was around to tell you what to wear, you gave yourself permission to find styles that make you happy,” Karen explained.
Now, many people take this style to fight back negative feelings and show themselves. “I’ve seen people who are normally very shy put on a colorful outfit and become fierce (热烈的), fabulous and free,” Karen said. “Their whole mood changes when they wear clothes that represent who they really are.”
26. What is “dopamine dressing”
A. Dressing for comfort. B. Dressing for a special event.
C. Dressing to encourage a positive mood. D. Dressing to follow fashion trends.
27. How do different colors affect people psychologically
A. Colors can influence our decision-making abilities.
B. Colors can change how we perceive temperature.
C. White and grey colors can create a relaxing atmosphere.
D. Colors with high saturation often make people feel depressed.
28. What does the underlined word “vibrant” in paragraph 4 most likely mean
A. Bright. B. Cool. C. Light. D. Mixed.
29. According to Karen, how did the pandemic affect the way people dress themselves
A. They showed little interest in fashion. B. They prioritized personal comfort.
C. They followed fashion trends more closely. D. They cared more about societal (社会的) fashion norms.
30. Where is the passage probably from
A. A fairy tale. B. A science magazine.
C. A travel guide. D. A fashion magazine.
C
Air pollution is one of the world’s invisible killers. It causes seven million deaths a year, making it the largest single environmental health risk. In cities, air pollution is particularly serious. More than 80% of people live in the areas where pollution levels are beyond WHO limits.
One well-established way to reduce air pollution is to plant trees, as their leaves catch and absorb harmful particulates (微粒). But planting new trees is not always a good choice for lack of enough space. That’s why the “City Tree”, a mobile tree which removes pollutants from the air, has been becoming popular in cities around the world, including Oslo, Paris, Brussels and Hong Kong.
Each City Tree is just under 4 meters tall, nearly 3 meters wide and 2.19 meters deep, acting as a chair or a bench. A screen is included for information or advertising. Berlin-based Green City Organization explains that its invention has the environmental benefit of up to 275 actual trees.
But the City Tree isn’t, in fact, a tree at all—it’s a moss culture (青苔培植). “Moss cultures have a much larger leaf surface area than any other plant. That means we can catch more pollutants,” said Zhengliang Wu, co-founder of Green City Organization.
The huge surfaces of moss in each tree can remove dust, NO2 and O3 gases from the air. It requires very little care: solar panels provide electricity, while rainwater is collected into a container and then sent into the soil.
To monitor the health of the moss, the City Tree has sensors which measure soil humidity (湿度), temperature and water quality. “We also have pollution sensors inside the trees, which help monitor the local air quality and tell us how efficient the tree is,” Wu said. Its creators say that each City Tree is able to absorb around 250 grams of particulate matter a day and contributes to removing 480 tons of CO2 a year.
31. What is the City Tree
A. It is an ordinary tree growing leavers. B. It is a mobile tree offering electricity.
C. It is a mobile tree providing rainwater. D. It is a moss culture absorbing pollutants.
32. Why is the City Tree becoming popular in cities
A. It takes up less space. B. It is very easy to move.
C. It requires very little care. D. It can be used for advertisement.
33. What does the City Tree depend on to work
A. Soil and rainwater. B. Solar panels and sensors.
C. Temperature and humidity. D. Moss culture and management.
34. Which of the following statements is right according to the text
A. The City Tree needs a lot of care.
B. The City Tree has environmental benefits as actual trees.
C. Pollution sensors in the tress can help protect the environment.
D. Planting new trees is a good choice to fight against air pollution in the city.
35. What can be the future of City Trees according to the text
A. Pressing. B. Confusing. C. Promising. D. Worrying.

Firstly, there is no doubt that there will be a number of magnificent skyscrapers in the future. The skyscrapers will be both elegant and practical, providing us with a visual feast. Additionally, people will live in their large flats, which can make them relish their lives. What’s more, I believe that most families will own flying cars. Not only can people drive their cars to work in a flash, but also travel around the world without booking the flights. Furthermore, robots will play a crucial role in our lives. All artificial intelligent robots will be able to chat with people fluently as well as work efficiently.
My imaginations of the future are all above. What’s your imagination of it I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
