Night after night, my mother came to my room, even long after my childhood years. She pushed my long hair out of my face with her hands, then kissed me.
I don’t remember when I started to be unhappy with that. And in fact her hands really made me uncomfortable. Finally, one night, I shouted out at her: “Don’t do that any more, your hands are too rough (粗糙)!” She didn’t say anything. But my mother never showed her love again in that way. Feeling sorry, but l didn’t tell her.
Well, the years have passed. and I’m not a little girl any more. Mom is in her mid-seventies, and those hands I once thought to be so rough are still doing things for me and my family. Now, my own children are grown and gone. Mom no longer has Dad. It was that late on Thanksgiving Eve, as I went to sleep in the bedroom of my youth, a hand gently brushed the hair from my face, then a kiss touched my face. In my memory, for the thousandth time, I remembered the night I ever shouted: “Don’t do that any more, your hands are too rough!” Catching Mom’s hand in hand, I cried out how sorry I was for that night. I thought she’d remember, as I did. But Mom didn’t know what I was talking about. She had forgotten and forgiven (原谅) long ago.
That night, I fell asleep with a new feeling for my gentle mother and her caring hands. And my heart was full of her love.
