At the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, among mountain songs and ethnic costumes and special ceremonies, I am noticeable despite my modern dress, as my green “VOLUNTEER” nametag brands me as a perfect target for curious tourists. I have volunteered to learn about global customs; my knowledge of my native culture is limited. I had boxed up my past before moving to America eight years ago, when a new continent considered my old self foreign.
Here on the National Mall, I am the only means of communication between the Americans and the artisan (工匠), who were invited from China to display their talents. They see my awkward hand gestures as I test my mother tongue, speaking Mandarin (普通话) and putting it into English for visitors.
The artisans possess exceptional skills. He Guoyao can read thousands of pictographic characters (象形文字) and bears the duty of passing on Dongba culture. Cheng Zhirong creates fantastic animal figures with a spoon and melted sugar in minutes. Standing among them, I wonder about the contributions a 16-year-old girl can make.
“Ooh, it’s so pretty!” A young girl sticks her nose close to a sugar dragon. Zhirong, the candy maker, signals to me, and I explain to the girl that the dragon is pure sugar. “Mommy, it’s candy!” she excitedly says. “Beautiful...” The crowd breathes in awe. One woman taps me on the shoulder, saying, “Please, tell her that her work is surreal... a gift from another world.”
As Zhirong takes my hand and calls me “little sister”, I find my place in this group of extraordinary people who crossed oceans to build a bridge between different ethnicities and nationalities through sugar sculptures and painted words. I, too, am a bearer of traditions.
I smile at Guoyao, as he paints in pictographic characters the English words I have taught him, “You’re welcome.” I come to know that culture is not shelved behind glass cases in museums. It is in the life that I once thought backward and dull — the Chinese way of life that is a part of me.
4. Why does the author attend the Smithsonian Folklife Festival
A. To learn about global traditions.
B. To improve her interpersonal skills.
C. To interview some talented artisans.
D. To appreciate the wonderful artworks.
5. What is the author’s role on the National Mall
A. A visitor. B. A translator. C. A tour guide. D. A security guard.
6. What does the underlined part “in awe” in paragraph 4 mean
A. In doubt. B. In silence. C. In satisfaction. D. In amazement.
7. What does the author realize in the end
A. Chinese culture has been part of her own identity.
B. Culture should be presented in different forms.
C. Culture can only be kept alive through exchanges.
D. Chinese culture has helped her better adapt to her new life.
C
Blue whales are the largest creatures to live on Earth after the dinosaurs. These amazing creatures are not only the largest whale species but also the largest mammal (哺乳动物) species to have ever existed on Earth.
The average length of a blue whale is 23—27 meters and its weight is from 100 to 150 tons. In spite of their large size, blue whales can swim at a fast speed of 25 to 30 miles per hour. The blue whales are not really blue in color but are actually gray. Blue whales feed on krill (磷虾). They take in a lot of water. They have a very unique way of communicating with each other by sending low frequency sound waves, which is even higher than the sound produced by a plane.
Before the whale hunting time started, blue whales could be found in all major oceans. Once, there were more than 200,000 blue whales that swam in the oceans. The Seas of Canada, North Atlantic Ocean and the seas to the south of Madagascar are among the most popular regions where blue whales can be found nowadays. Other major parts are the Antarctic Ocean and the Davis Strait.
Early whaling was limited by simple tools and whaling skills. So the damage to whale populations was not great. But with the development of powerful guns and steam-powered boats, whaling advanced. More whales were hunted at a rapid rate. In 1931 alone, 29,649 whales were killed. Humans competed to hunt the big animals. Besides, the number of blue whales is low due to more man’s deep-sea activities.
Fortunately, officials are doing something great about the blue whales. The International Whaling Commission has taken steps to protect these wonderful mittees of experts have been formed to work against whaling.
8. How do blue whales communicate
A. By swimming fast. B. By delivering food. C. By touching each other. D. By sending sound signals.
9. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The habits that blue whales develop. B. The ways that blue whales are hunted.
C. The places where blue whales can be found. D. The reasons why blue whales are endangered.
10. What caused the number of blue whales to drop quickly according to the text
A. Ocean water was polluted. B. Hunting tools were improved.
C. The blue whales suffered from illnesses. D. The blue whales fought against each other.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the officials’ work
A. Positive. B. Worried. C. Unclear. D. Confused.

Regularly practicing facial “yoga”, or exercises for your facial muscles, may actually make you look younger, early research suggests,
In a small, new study, researchers taught 27 middle-age women (ages 40 to 65) how to perform 32 facial exercises, which included simple actions such as smiling in the cheeks. After this training, the participants performed these exercises at home for 30 minutes a day, every day for eight weeks. On the ninth week of the study, the participants reduced the frequency of their 30-minute exercise routine to every other day (three to four days a week), and continued the exercise for 20 weeks.
The participants also had their photos taken at the beginning and end of the study, and several doctors rated these photos using a standard method for assessing the appearance of aging in the face and neck. The raters, who didn’t know which photos were taken before and which photos were taken after the exercises, also estimated the age of the person in the photo.
After 20 weeks, the participants had better ratings for the fullness of their cheeks, on average, compared with their ratings at the start of the study. In other words, their cheeks looked fuller after their 20-week facial exercise. This change in cheek fullness also made the participants look younger: Raters estimated that the participants looked nearly three years younger after the exercises, compared with before.
However, the findings are preliminary and should be confirmed with a larger study, the researchers said. And many questions remain about exactly which exercises are beneficial and who might benefit from them. “The study involved middle-age, mainly white women, who stayed in the study for 20 weeks, so it’s not known whether the effects seen in the study would apply to men, or to people of other ages or races. It’s also not clear how long people need to perform the exercises in order to see benefits,” lead study author Dr. Murad Alam said.
12. What did the researchers first do in the study
A. They trained the participants.
B. They divided the participants into groups.
C. They took photos of the participants.
D. They checked the faces of the participants.
13. What was the participants’ specific change according to the study
A. They looked healthier. B. They got fuller facial outline.
C They became interested in Yoga. D. They got to smile more frequently.
14. What does the underlined word “confirmed” in the last paragraph mean
A. proved B. questioned C. challenged D. affected
15. What can be inferred from Dr. Murad Alam’s words
A. More facial exercises will be performed.
B. Middle-aged women will not be included.
C. Men participants will appear in later studies.
D. 20 weeks is enough to test if an exercise works.

Whether we notice it or not, our child is a little reflection of ourselves. They grow up looking more and more like us. They even have similar personalities and hobbies. And in some cases, the standard of choosing a good friend.
One day, my 10-year-old Jane said, “Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow ” Her words made me extremely happy because Jane was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.
“Sure honey, that sounds great.” I said, thinking back to my own childhood best friend, Susan. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter. I was shy and had trouble making friends. But Susan drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile. Thanks to Susan. I was happy every day.
In senior high school, Susan went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. “I’ll be back soon and I will write to you as soon as I arrive.” she told me. But I didn’t get her phone call nor receive any mail from her. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey, making my hope of seeing Susan impossible.
Whenever I thought of him, tears came into my eyes.
The next day Jane brought her new friend home. “Hi, Mrs. Smith.” the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she gave me a big smile. “My name is Jo. My mom will pick me up 2 hours later.”

A. Ocean water was polluted. B. Hunting tools were improved.

A They trained the participants.
B. They divided the participants into groups.
C. They took photos of the participants.
D. They checked the faces of the participants.
13. What was the participants’ specific change according to the study
A. They looked healthier. B. They got fuller facial outline.
C. They became interested in Yoga. D. They got to smile more frequently.
14. What does the underlined word “confirmed” in the last paragraph mean
A. proved B. questioned C. challenged D. affected
15. What can be inferred from Dr. Murad Alam’s words
A More facial exercises will be performed.
B. Middle-aged women will not be included.
C. Men participants will appear in later studies.
D. 20 weeks is enough to test if an exercise works.
A 13. B 14. A 15. C

根据第一段中“In a small, new study, researchers taught 27 middle-age women (ages 40 to 65) how to perform 32 facial exercises, which included simple actions such as smiling in the cheeks. After this training, the participants performed these exercises at home for 30 minutes a day, every day for eight weeks.(在一项小型的新研究中,研究人员教27名中年女性(年龄在40岁到65岁之间)如何进行32种面部运动,其中包括一些简单的动作,比如在脸颊上微笑。训练结束后,参与者每天在家做这些练习30分钟,持续八周)”可知,在研究之前,研究人员教27名中年女性(年龄在40岁到65岁之间)如何进行32种面部运动,即首先对参与者进行面部动作的训练。故选A。
根据第四段中“After 20 weeks, the participants had better ratings for the fullness of their cheeks, on average, compared with their ratings at the start of the study. In other words, their cheeks looked fuller after their 20-week facial exercise.
故划线词与A选项“proved(被证明)”为同义词。故选A。
根据最后一段中“The study involved middle-age, mainly white women, who stayed in the study for 20 weeks, so it’s not known whether the effects seen in the study would apply to men, or to people of other ages or races. It’s also not clear how long people need to perform the exercises in order to see benefits,(这项研究涉及的是中年女性,主要是白人女性,她们在研究中呆了20周,所以不知道研究中看到的效果是否适用于男性,或者其他年龄或种族的人。目前还不清楚人们需要多长时间才能看到好处)”可推知,根据Dr. Murad Alam话可知,该研究的主要参与对象是中年女性,因此为了证明研究的可信度,男性参与者将在以后的研究中出现。故选C。

【答案】Dear Jonason,
I’m pleased to hear from you and I appreciate your sincere congratulations. It is with the greatest pleasure that I share my experience with you.
It has been an amazing journey and a very rewarding experience to develop writing skills to become a journalist. In primary school, my favorite hobby was creative writing and to this day I still love writing. Most of the time I try one way or another to seek out interesting details about my life and go from there. Having the chance to write and publish articles every so often has helped me develop my writing skills. Most importantly, I couldn’t have achieved all this without the support of my teacher and my parents.
Hope everything goes well!

“Sure, honey, that sounds great.” I said, thinking back to my own childhood best friend, Susan.

Paragraph 2:

I was puzzled because my daughter’s new friend looked so familiar. But I was sure that I had never met Jo before. She told me that her family just moved from Los Angeles, which puzzled me even more because I had never been to Los Angeles and we had no relatives living in Los Angeles, either. I convinced myself that it was only my imagination. The two girls got on very well and they giggled from time to time. I watched them play and felt so happy for my daughter from the bottom of my heart.
Two hours passed really quickly, and there was a knock on the door. It was Jo’s mom coming to pick her up later that afternoon. On seeing her face, I was shocked. “Judy!” she cried. “It’s me, Susan!” We embraced each other. It turned out that her father’s company sent his father to Los Angeles before they settled in Florida. She tried calling me later but we had moved. The two little girls were happy to see their mothers became good friends at once before we told them our story, with happy tears rolling down our cheeks.
