I was a young newspaper reporter, and I wanted to succeed. My first job was in Latin America. It was almost my last job.
I had not planned to stay in the village of Zacate, but it had been raining hard for a whole day. So I had to stay there.
I found people there full of fear. This village was at the foot of a volcano. It was becoming more active. Men, women and children came to the square. A few helped each other and went out of town to get as far away from the volcano as possible, with large and full packs in their hands. Suddenly, I felt a strong earthquake. The villagers in the square ran away as soon as they felt the earthquake.
Suddenly, I saw black smoke rolling down the side of the mountain towards the village. Trees and grass burned up in a second. The volcano eruption(喷发) was coming so fast that in less than a minute the roads to the village were cut off. All I could do was watch and wait. Suddenly, my landlord(房东) cried out, “Look!” He pointed to a small hill, which was near to us. The lava(岩浆) was not coming over it but flowing on each side of the village, leaving the village centre undamaged. For a time, at least, we were safe, unless the lava grew much bigger.
My landlord gave me a wet blanket to cover myself to avoid the heat and we poured water over our heads to cool ourselves. We could hardly breathe because of the heat and the smoke of the burning houses. Thanks to my landlord, I survived the volcano.
4. The reporter stayed in Zacate because of ______.
A. his busy job B. bad weather C. an accident D. an adventure
5. What made the villagers leave the town
A. The news report. B. The journalist.
C. The active volcano. D. Their strict landlord.
6. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The lava. B. The thick smoke.
C. The village. D. The small hill.
7. What can we learn from the text
A. The landlord is very experienced. B. The small village was flooded.
C. The lava killed a lot of people. D. The rescuers saved the reporter.
B 5. C 6. D 7. A
根据第二段中“I had not planned to stay in the village of Zacate, but it had been raining hard for a whole day. So I had to stay there. (我本来不打算呆在Zacate村,但雨下了整整一天。所以我不得不呆在那里。)”可知,由于天气不好,记者留在了Zacate。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“I found people there full of fear. This village was at the foot of a volcano. It was becoming more active. Men, women and children came to the square. A few helped each other and went out of town to get as far away from the volcano as possible, with large and full packs in their hands. (我发现那里人们充满了恐惧。这个村庄位于火山脚下。它变得更加活跃了。男人、女人和孩子来到广场。有几个人互相帮助,出了城,尽量远离火山,手里拿着又大又满的背包。)”可知,活火山使村民们离开了这个小镇。故选C项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词句前文“He pointed to a small hill, which was near to us. (他指了指离我们很近的一座小山。)”说明他指的是一座小山,从而推知划线词句“The lava(岩浆) was not coming over it but flowing on each side of the village, leaving the village centre undamaged. (熔岩没有从it上面流过,而是从村庄的两边流过,使村庄中心没有受到破坏。)” 中划线的“it”指的是“小山”。故选D项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“My landlord gave me a wet blanket to cover myself to avoid the heat and we poured water over our heads to cool ourselves. We could hardly breathe because of the heat and the smoke of the burning houses. Thanks to my landlord, I survived the volcano. (我的房东给了我一条湿毯子,让我盖住自己,以免受热,我们把水倒在头上降温。由于房屋燃烧的热气和烟雾,我们几乎无法呼吸。多亏我的房东,我才从火山中活了下来。)”可以推知,房东应对火山很有经验。故选A项。

Did you know that honeybees aren’t the only insects capable of producing the sweet, sticky, and brown-to-golden-colored natural product we know as honey There is perhaps the most unusual insect able to change nectar(花粉) into honey called the honeypot ant. Belonging to a kind of ant species, honeypot ants are specialized workers that act as living storage for their fellow ants when food is scarce. Most species of honeypot ants are found in dry regions in Australia, the USA, Mexico and on the African continent, where finding food sources can be tough, so the production and storage of honey is believed to be an adaptation to survive in these rough environments.
Worker ants constantly feed honeypot ants nectar collected from various plants. The only job of honeypot ants is to wolf down nectar. At one point, the honey ants’ abdomens(腹部) become so big that they are unable to move and ready to spill(溢 出) ant honey, so they just hang from the roof of their nest until their fellow ants are in need of food.
Honeypot ants are such a valuable resource that other ant groups will sometimes attack and steal them. In Australia, the locals also prize the honey-filled insects and will dig around for them. In the1990 documentary Trials of Life, David Attenborough himself was filmed putting a honeypot ant into his mouth.
So how does honeypot ant honey compare to honeybee honey According to one study, researchers find that there are two obvious differences between them. Although the two varieties look very similar at first glance, the honeypot ant honey is sweet, but not quite as sweet as the treat we humans are used to, and has a sour taste that cannot be detected in the honeybee honey.
8. What does the underlined word “scarce”in the first paragraph mean
A. Free. B. Lacking.
C. Cheap. D. Sufficient.
9. Where are honeypot ants most likely to be found
A. In the desert. B. In the zoo.
C. On the river. D. By the sea.
10. When do the honeypot ants hang from the roof of their nest
A. When they are able to move freely.
B. When they want to breathe fresh air.
C. When they are ready to spill ant honey.
D. When they want to refuse to feed fellow ants.
11. What will be discussed in the following paragraph
A. A method of judging the quality of honeybee honey.
B. The importance of protecting the precious honeypot ants.
C. The efforts for the locals to stop honeypot ants being attacked.
D. The other difference between honeypot ant honey and honeybee honey.
B 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据文章第一段划线词之前“Belonging to a kind of ant species, honeypot ants are specialized workers that act as living storage for their fellow ants(蜜罐蚁属于蚂蚁的一种,是专门为其他蚂蚁充当生活仓库的工蚁)”可知蜜罐蚂蚁可以充当其他蚂蚁生活的仓库,可以推测是指在食物匮乏时为其他蚂蚁提供食物,所以此处划线词的意思应与B项lacking“匮乏的”意思相近。
根据文章第一段“Most species of honeypot ants are found in dry regions in Australia, the USA, Mexico and on the African continent, where finding food sources can be tough, so the production and storage of honey is believed to be an adaptation to survive in these rough environments.(大多数种类的蜜罐蚂蚁生活在澳大利亚、美国、墨西哥和非洲大陆的干旱地区,在那里寻找食物来源可能很困难,因此蜂蜜的生产和储存被认为是在这些恶劣环境中生存的一种适应。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第二段“At one point, the honey ants’ abdomens(腹部) become so big that they are unable to move and ready to spill(溢 出) ant honey, so they just hang from the roof of their nest until their fellow ants are in need of food.(有一段时间,蜜蚁的腹部变得非常大,以至于它们无法移动,随时准备洒出蜜来,所以它们就挂在巢穴的屋顶上,直到同伴们需要食物。)”
根据文章最后一段“So how does honeypot ant honey compare to honeybee honey According to one study, researchers find that there are two obvious differences between them. Although the two varieties look very similar at first glance, the honeypot ant honey is sweet, but not quite as sweet as the treat we humans are used to, and has a sour taste that cannot be detected in the honeybee honey.
D
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools designed to operate at human levels have greatly expanded in popularity over the past year. These include OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s AI-powered search engine Bing. Such tools, also known as chatbots or generative AI, are computer-powered systems. They are designed to interact smoothly with humans and perform high-level writing and creative work.
In recent months, these tools have demonstrated an ability to produce high-quality work. This has led some technology experts to warn that generative AI systems could end up replacing workers in many industries.
This year, researchers at Harvard Business School and other organizations carried out an experiment. It aimed to test how well AI tools could help workers perform their usual duties or tasks. It involved more than 700 business advisors, called consultants, from Massachusetts-based Boston Consulting Group.
Harvard Business School recently published the results from the experiment in a working paper. The main findings suggest that AI tools like ChatGPT can greatly improve worker performance. For example, researchers found that, on average, workers who used OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT 4 tool completed 12 percent more tasks than non-ChatGPT users. Tasks carried out with help from the AI technology were completed 25 percent faster. And the team found the quality of work performed by consultants using ChatGPT 4 increased by about 40 percent.
However, the paper also noted areas where the performance of consultants using ChatGPT 4 dropped. The researchers said this was especially true with tasks the AI tool was not good at completing. “Of tasks the AI was good at, the experiment showed it significantly improved human performance,” the paper said. “But for tasks ChatGPT 4 was not right for, humans relied too much on the AI and were more likely to make mistakes.”
The team suggests one of the biggest barriers to companies effectively using AI is not knowing which tasks can be completed best with the technology. Finding this out will require businesses to carry out thoughtful research and training efforts in order to find the right mix of AI and human-level work.
12. What is a purpose of designing AI tools according to the text
A. To perform low-level writing. B. To replace technology experts.
C. To finish high-quality work. D. To improve interpersonal communication.
13. Why does the author mention ChatGPT 4 in paragraph 4
A. To explain the disadvantages of AI tools.
B. To show how well AI tools could help workers.
C. To forecast changes in the future working environment.
D. To compare the work performance between humans and AI tools.
14. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. Companies need to balance the work of AI and humans.
B. It is useless to train so many workers to learn to use AI.
C. It is easy to find the right mix of AI and human-level work.
D. Research on using AI effectively has been made by businesses.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. ChatGPT Can See, Hear and Speak Now
B. Ways to Improve Your Performance at Work
C. The Fast Development of Artificial Intelligence
D. AI Tools Help but also Harm Worker Performance
C 13. B 14. A 15. D

根据第一段“They are designed to interact smoothly with humans and perform high-level writing and creative work.(它们被设计成能与人类流畅地互动,并能执行高水平的写作和创造性工作。)””及第二段“In recent months, these tools have demonstrated an ability to produce high-quality work.(最近几个月,这些工具已经证明了产生高质量工作的能力。)””
根据第四段“The main findings suggest that AI tools like ChatGPT can greatly improve worker performance.(主要研究结果表明,像ChatGPT这样的人工智能工具可以极大地提高员工的绩效。)””
根据最后一段“The team suggests one of the biggest barriers to companies effectively using AI is not knowing which tasks can be completed best with the technology. Finding this out will require businesses to carry out thoughtful research and training efforts in order to find the right mix of AI and human-level work.(该团队表示,企业有效使用人工智能的最大障碍之一是不知道哪些任务可以用这项技术完成得最好。要找到这一点,企业需要进行深思熟虑的研究和培训工作,以便找到人工智能和人类工作的正确组合。)”可知,公司需要平衡人工智能和人类的工作。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“They are designed to interact smoothly with humans and perform high-level writing and creative work. (它们被设计成能与人类流畅地互动,并能执行高水平的写作和创造性工作。)”和第五段“But for tasks ChatGPT 4 was not right for, humans relied too much on the AI and were more likely to make mistakes.(但对于ChatGPT 4不适合的任务,人类过于依赖人工智能,更容易出错。)”

It was a hot day. The sun scorched (炙烤) down and everywhere you looked, you could see the heat waves blowing above the sand. John rolled over, realizing that half of his body was well and truly burnt. He had not meant to sleep in the sun but the heat and late nights studying for his examinations made him miserable. Stretching, he got to his feet, picked up his surfboard and looked around. The beach, which had earlier been crowded in the sun, was now comparatively empty. Seagulls flew down to clean up the food of people’s picnic lunches.
The ice-cream van had gone, and so were the lifeguards who were doing first aid on the beach. John looked up to where the sun was and estimated it was about five o’clock. Time to head home. It was “Mum’s Kitchen Rule” that had him moving homewards. If he did not get home in time for dinner, he would go hungry. Wandering along the water’s edge, he happened to glance out to sea. What made him look up at that particular moment, he never knew, but it was the right time for the swimmer he spotted. His hand was up, signaling distress (险情) and he was calling out something.
Quickly John glanced around the beach — no one else was close enough to help the man, and crucially, no one had noticed. Cupping his hands to his mouth, he shouted “Help” to get the attention of other people on the beach. Someone waved back to him and John pointed to the swimmer. “Get help,” he shouted. Then without hesitation, he jumped into the sea with his surfboard. John was a strong swimmer and had a good skill for distance swimming. His coach had tried hard to persuade him to go into competitions but he was not interested.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now he was swimming for more than enjoyment or medals. He was swimming to save someone’s life. He swam very fast. “I must be close to him now,” he thought. Then he heard the man cry anxiously. “Help me, I’m hurt.” As John reached him, he started to reassure him, “It’s OK, mister. I’ll get you to the shore.” “Easier said than done,” John thought to himself. “This man’s big.” He helped the man get on his board.
Fortunately, the sea was not rough and there was no wave. As John reached the shallow water, willing hands appeared to help carry the man ashore. John sat down and began to recover his breath. A small crowd gathered around the swimmer. “They must know what to do,” John thought with relief, reaching for his board and standing up. He figured that since no one needed him, he had better go home before he missed out on his dinner. No one noticed him leave.

C. The village. D. The small hill.
7. What can we learn from the text
A. The landlord is very experienced. B. The small village was flooded.
C. The lava killed a lot of people. D. The rescuers saved the reporter.

A. Free. B. Lacking.
C. Cheap. D. Sufficient.
9 Where are honeypot ants most likely to be found
A. In the desert. B. In the zoo.
C. On the river. D. By the sea.
10. When do the honeypot ants hang from the roof of their nest
A When they are able to move freely.

Now he was swimming for more than enjoyment or medals.
