I went shopping for a dress to wear to my daughter’s high school graduation half a year ago. To my horror, I could only fit into a size 20.
Being overweight most of my adult life, I always had very little self-confidence. Wearing a dress I didn’t like to such an important event was enough to make me look for help. Thankfully, a friend of mine was attending Weight Watchers meetings, and I noticed her great progress. Her success inspired me to give it a try. I joined Weight Watchers, attended their meetings and started following their Weight-Loss System.
I focused on the plan with determination and never missed a weekly meeting! I discovered that I enjoyed the benefits of having the help and support of others. I also read the weekly online e-newsletter and was inspired by the stories, recipes and information offered there, I also read magazines produced by Weight Watchers, which have great tips and new ideas in each issue.
It’s hard for me to even remember the person I was before my amazing change. I didn’t walk anywhere and couldn’t wash my car or walk my dog. Today I do these simple tasks without even thinking about them. But the change didn’t happen overnight. I had to exercise with patience and perseverance. I decided to take it one day at a time and stick with it for good.
The “new me” is more self-confident and healthier. I love how I feel now. I have more energy and feel like I’m 25 again. So why not give Weight Watchers a try if you have the same overweight problem
4. The underlined word “inspired” in the second paragraph can be replaced by .
A. excited B. moved C. encouraged D. forced
5. We can learn from the passage that the writer .
A. often went shopping before she lost weight B. was overweight when she was a child
C. ever wanted to give up losing weight D. now is more confident than before
6. This passage is written to .
A. tell us how to gain self-confidence
B. show off the great progress that the author has made
C. give us some tips on how to lose weight quickly
D. advise overweight people to give Weight Watchers a try

For late 19th-century North Americans and Europeans, a display of tableware (餐具)could reveal much about someone’s social position, as the wealthy took great care to get different kinds of forks for everything. Before the 18th century, people of all classes usually ate with a knife and a spoon.
The fork’s path to the table was hard-won and slow. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, forks were used for slicing food into pieces or lifting meat from a pot or fire.
Following a reduction in size, the fork appeared to have entered dining areas in the courts of the Middle East and Byzantine Empire by the eighth and ninth centuries, and became common among wealthy families there by the tenth century. Early in the 11th century, it appeared in various pieces of European art. In the late 11th century, St.Peter Damian from Ostia wrote about a Byzantine princess who used forks and regarded her dying of a disease as punishment for such “luxury”.
The fork’s slow conquest of Europe was carried out from Italy. Motivated by the same concerns for hygiene(卫生),forks were bought by wealthy Britons, inspired by Queen Victoria, who regarded fork use as a sign of good manners.
The fork’s introduction to North America dates back to 1633, when John Winthrop, a founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was gifted a set of forks. The Industrial Revolution strengthened the fork’s presence on dining room tables as production of flatware became less expensive. Writing in 1896 inSocial Eriquere,Maud C. Cooke declared the fork had finally conquered the knife in America and “any attempt to give the knife importance at table is looked upon as an offense(冒犯)against good taste.”

“There are more people actively learning a language through DuoLingo than in the entire US public school system.” says Luis von Ahn, founder of the free language learning app. Since its launch (投放市场) in 2012, more than 30 million people have downloaded (下载) the app, which gamified education and attracted many language learners.
The growth of technology for educational use has changed the way in which people learn and receive education. This is particularly true for languages, an area in which the explosion of mobile apps and interactive software has provided choices to a range of people who were previously unable to receive foreign language education.
Von Ahn says that when he founded DuoLingo he decided to find a way for people to learn a language for free. Free use of languages was something he had a personal interest in addressing: he grew up in Guatemala, where he was surrounded by people all trying to learn English, half of whom were failing to do so and a lot of whom could not afford it.
One of the big changes caused by tech is the change in language learners. Languages have long been connected with the rich people, but now people from less rich backgrounds are finding affordable ways to learn.
Von Ahn says an unexpected result of DuoLingo being an app is that it’s attracting an unlikely type of user. DuoLingo was designed (设计) to be like a game, and what the company has found is that many users aren’t even necessarily diehard language fans, they’re just looking for an educational way to kill some time.
“They’re still procrastinating from something else, but at least it’s somewhat useful.” says Von Ahn, “The truth of the matter is that learning a language takes months or years. We have to find a way to keep them interested and that’s where the gamification came in.”
12. What can we say about DuoLingo after its launch
A. It is used by entire US schools. B. It costs 30 dollars to download.
C. It changes the use of languages. D. It makes education more enjoyable.
13. Why does the author mention Von Ahn in paragraph 3
A. To show his poverty in childhood.
B. To explain why he founded the app.
C. To prove he was interested in the app.
D. To find out how he designed the app.
14. What change does DuoLingo bring to language learners
A. They can master a language faster. B. They become language fans totally.
C. They can learn in a low-cost way. D. They can now use it to kill some time.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Reasons for Learning a Language
B. How to Learn a Language Online
C. The Development of a Language App
D. Mastering a Language with DuoLingo
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了DuoLingo软件带给语言市场的变化。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段““There are more people actively learning a language through DuoLingo than in the entire US public school system.” says Luis von Ahn, founder of the free language learning app. Since its launch (投放市场) in 2012, more than 30 million people have downloaded (下载) the app, which gamified education and attracted many language learners.(免费语言学习应用程序的创始人路易斯·冯·安表示:“通过DuoLingo积极学习一门语言的人比整个美国公立学校系统都多。”。自2012年推出以来,已有超过3000万人下载了该应用程序,该应用程序将教育游戏化,吸引了许多语言学习者)”可知,自从DuoLingo这款软件推出以来,它通过将教育游戏化,吸引了许多语言学习者。由此可推知,这个软件使教育更加愉快。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Von Ahn says that when he founded DuoLingo he decided to find a way for people to learn a language for free. Free use of languages was something he had a personal interest in addressing: he grew up in Guatemala, where he was surrounded by people all trying to learn English, half of whom were failing to do so and a lot of whom could not afford it.(冯安说,当他创建DuoLingo时,他决定为人们找到一种免费学习语言的方法。自由使用语言是他个人的兴趣所在:他在危地马拉长大,周围都是想学英语的人,其中一半人没能做到,很多人买不起)”可推知,作者在第三段提到了Von Ahn,是为了解释了他创造这个软件的原因。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“One of the big changes caused by tech is the change in language learners. Languages have long been connected with the rich people, but now people from less rich backgrounds are finding affordable ways to learn.(科技带来的一大变化是语言学习者的变化。长期以来,语言一直与富人联系在一起,但现在,来自较不富裕背景的人正在找到负担得起的学习方式。)”可知,来自较不富裕背景的人正在找到负担得起的学习方式,DuoLingo 恰恰提供了这种方式。由此可推知,学习者可以以低成本的方式学习。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一句话““There are more people actively learning a language through DuoLingo than in the entire US public school system.” says Luis von Ahn, founder of the free language learning app.(免费语言学习应用程序创始人路易斯·冯·安表示:“通过DuoLingo积极学习一门语言的人比整个美国公立学校系统都多。”)”可知,本文主要讲述了路易斯·冯·安创造了DuoLingo 来帮助人么学习英语。因此,“用DuoLingo 掌握一门语言”适合作本文的标题。故选D。

After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.
“Hi, Mary,” in rushed her friend Jessica “How is your arm Is it going to influence your performance ”
“I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match.” said Mary with a determined look.
“Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched e on!”
After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin. “If I don’t try harder, I won’t grasp this chance.” She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight ” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi, I’m Linda. I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, “Oh, God, I can’t find my music tape!” Linda searched her bag but in vain. “It may be missing on the way.” With these words, she then rushed out.

At that moment, Linda came back in low spirits. Mary handed the box to her and said, “Take it easy, we are the best.” Soon, it’s her turn to come on the stage.
Linda finished her dancing successfully and then came Mary’s turn. Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster. She kept reminding herself, “Don’t be nervous. I have been practicing for so long, and I will certainly make it.” But the serious pain in her arm came again when she was performing the most difficult spin. She fell down on the stage. Linda and Jessica rushed over to help her up. Finally, Mary lost the game but she believed she had won everything.

8. What can we learn about forks from paragraph1
A. They were used improperly in the 18th century.
