SEEING THE TRUE NORTH VIA RAIL: VANCOUVER AND THE HEART OF CANADALi Daiyu and her cousin Liu Oian went to Canada to visit their cousins in Halifax on theAtlantic coast. Rather than travel by commercial airline all the way, they decided to fly toancouver and then take the train. For both of them, the thought of crossing the whole country byrail was exciting. Before starting out, they spent a couple of days in Vancouver, seeing the sights. During theirfirst day, as is typical of Vancouver, it rained. Despite the weather, they were able to take a boat rideout into the bay. and later visit an island that had wonderful shops selling crafts and antiques. Thcnext day was clear and mild, and they were pleased to see the beautiful mountains looking out ovethe city. Later, they took a pleasant hike in a forest just a short distance away. The next morning, the two girls arose early to take the train to Lake Louise, passing throughthe Canadian Rockies. Seen from the train window, the mountains and forests of Canada lookedmassive. When the train arrived at the station, they took a taxi to Lake Louise, where the blue waterliterally took their breath away with its exceptional beauty. They spent the night, and then took coach bound north through the Canadian Rockies to Jasper. Looking at the beautiful scenery, theyboth agreed that it was the most awesome journey they had ever taken. In addition to seeingspectacular mountain peaks and forests, one highlight of their trip was being able to see many different creatures, including deer, mountain goats and even a grizzly bear and an eagle. From Jasper, they caught the train towards Toronto. One of the train's first stops was inEdmonton, the provincial capital of Alberta, the centre of Canada's huge oil and gas drillingindustry. Edmonton is freezing cold in winter, with daily temperatures averaging -10°C. Since it canbe too cold to go outdoors, Edmonton is home to many shopping malls. In fact, one of the larges shopping malls in North America is in Edmonton. From Edmonton, the train headed southeast across the great Canadian Prairie. At school, Daiyuand Liu Qian had learnt that Canada's population is only slightly over thirty-seven millionHowever, they did not anticipate seeing such an open country, and were truly amazed. They wenithrough two wheat-growing provinces, where they saw a bunch of farms that covered a very largearea. After another day on the train, eventually they were back in an urban area, the city ofWinnipeg. From there, they travelled through the night, and woke up in Ontario-a land of forest:and lakes. The train thundered on, through the rolling hills. The bushes and maple trees outsidetheir windows were red, gold, and orange, and there was frost on the ground, confirming thatautumn had arrived in Canada. Night came again, and the train turned south towards Toronto. Whenthey woke up the next morning and pulled back the curtain, they could see the wide stretch of LakeHuron--one of the four Great Lakes on Ontario's southern border. It was not until 9:30 a.m. thatthey finally reached the capital of Ontario, Toronto. All in all, their trip from Vancouver to Torontohad taken a duration of four days.

语篇品读 https://uww, (高考题源报刊) Egypt is known for its ancient artifacts, tombs, pyramids, and pharaohs. One of its most famous rulers, a boy king named Tutankhamen, has been a source for one of the greatest archeological (考古学的) discoveries in the world. Recently, my family and I visited Egypt for eight days. Located in Northern Africa, the country is home to more than 105 million people. While there, we explode red the pyramids, tombs, and temples built by the ancient Egyptians. Even before I visited any historical sites, I noticed great differences between Egypt and the United States. In the places I visited, I rarely saw traffic lights at the crossroads. Many buildings appeared unfinished. Often the top floor still had concrete pillars (柱子) and wires sticking out, as if another floor was to be built. Our guides gave us two different explanations for this. One was that an unfinished building wasn’t taxed. We were also told that when a father ran out of money, his son was supposed to finish the house. The first site we toured was the Great Pyramid of Giza. It was built more than 4,500 years ago by the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Measure. While ex parts still don’t know how such an amazing structure could be built so long ago, Egyptologists (埃及古物学者) think that ramps (活动梯) were used to pull the heavy blocks up into position. It was long thought that enslaved people built the pyramids, but that isn’t true. Egyptian laborers who helped in the construction were finally buried near the king, which was considered a great honor. We also saw temples made of cut rock. “The Abu Simbel Temples were my favorite part of Egypt,” said my 10 year old sister, Vida. “Seeing the amazing temples was definitely worth the long drive and 4 am wake up call.”

Interest in sleep tourism is increasing, with a number of establishments focusing their attention on those suffering from sleep disorder.
Over the past 12 months, Park Hyatt New York has opened the Bryte Restorative Sleep Suite, a 900-square-foot suite filled with sleep-enhancing amenities (便利设施), while Rosewood Hotels Resorts recently launched a collection of retreats called the Alchemy of Sleep, which are designed to “promote rest”, and Swedish manufacturer Hastens established the world’s first Hastens Sleep Spa Hotel, a 15-room boutique hotel a year later.
Dr Rebecca Robbins, a sleep researcher and co-author of the book Sleep for Success! believes this shift has been around for a long time, particularly with regards to hotels. “When it comes down to it, travelers book hotels for a place to sleep,” she says, before pointing out that in the past the hotel industry has primarily been focused on things that actually detract from sleep. “People often associate travel with luxury meals, the attractions and the things they do while they’re traveling, really almost at the cost of sleep.” she adds.
According to Dr Robbins, travel experiences centering around “healthy sleep strategies” that aim to supply guests with the tools they need to improve their sleep can be hugely beneficial, if an excellent medical or scientific expert is involved in some way to help to determine whether there may be something else at play.
Mandarin Oriental in Geneva has taken things a step further by teaming up with CENAS, a private medical sleeping clinic in Switzerland, to create a three-day program that studies guests’ sleeping patterns in order to identify potential sleeping disorders, giving professional suggestions if necessary.
As sleep tourism continues to grow, Dr Robbins says she’s looking forward to seeing “who really continues to pioneer and think creatively about this space”, stressing that there are countless means that haven’t been fully explored yet when it comes to travel and the science of sleep.
1.What is the main purpose of paragraph 2
A.To list the consequences of sleep disorder.
B.To provide evidence for the rise of sleep tourism.
C.To highlight the importance of quality sleep.
D.To prove the popularity of some hotels.
2.What does the underlined phrase “detract from” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Reduce. B.Benefit. C.Measure. D.Analyze.
3.What is special about Mandarin Oriental in Geneva
A.It sets up a private medical sleeping clinic in its hotel.
B.It offers professionally medical help in sleeping problems.
C.It provides special tour route for people with sleeping disorders.
D.It suggests some good and scientific sleeping bedding.
4.What does Dr Robbins probably think of the sleep tourism
A.It needs to be systematized. B.It meets some doubts.
C.It is facing bottleneck. D.It’s promising.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.B 4.D
根据第二段“Over the past 12 months, Park Hyatt New York has opened the Bryte Restorative Sleep Suite, a 900-square-foot suite filled with sleep-enhancing amenities (便利设施), while Rosewood Hotels Resorts recently launched a collection of retreats called the Alchemy of Sleep, which are designed to “promote rest”, and Swedish manufacturer Hastens established the world’s first Hastens Sleep Spa Hotel, a 15-room boutique hotel a year later.
根据划线单词下文““People often associate travel with luxury meals, the attractions and the things they do while they’re traveling, really almost at the cost of sleep.” she adds. 可知,过去人们在旅行时,会减少睡眠时间,在旅游期间做的事都是一牺牲睡眠为代价的,结合画线短语所在句子“in the past the hotel industry has primarily been focused on things that actually detract from sleep (过去,酒店业主要关注的是那些实际上会detract from睡眠的东西。)”
根据倒数第二段“Mandarin Oriental in Geneva has taken things a step further by teaming up with CENAS, a private medical sleeping clinic in Switzerland, to create a three-day program that studies guests’ sleeping patterns in order to identify potential sleeping disorders, giving professional suggestions if necessary.
根据最后一段“As sleep tourism continues to grow, Dr Robbins says she’s looking forward to seeing “who really continues to pioneer and think creatively about this space”, stressing that there are countless means that haven’t been fully explored yet when it comes to travel and the science of sleep.

Into the Night
The lights from the cottage windows disappear, as we follow a dark footpath through a field into the open countryside. Thick clouds prevent the moonlight from lighting up the way ahead. Yet, as my eyes begin to get used to the darkness, the landscape around me reveals itself in a new light.
Mount Caburn, an iron-age hill fort (堡垒), looks like shadows against the sky. On the horizon is a tree bent by the wind. The rocky outcrop (露出的部分) at the top of the field turns out to be a flock of sleeping sheep. A fox cries, a pheasant crows, and the air is full of a strong earthy scent.
“For most of human history, man lived in close contact with the land,” says Nigel Berman, my guide. “Only in the past few hundred years have we shut ourselves off from our natural surroundings. Walking at night is a powerful way of reconnecting. When your vision is reduced, your other senses are sharpened.”
Nigel and I walk from the village of Glynde across the South Downs towards the town of Lewes. It is a walk I know well by day, but at night everything is different, and a familiar wander becomes a mini adventure. When Nigel told me not to bring a torch, I was alarmed. I can’t remember the last time I used my night vision and I’m not even sure how it works.
Normally, at this time of night, I would be having a glass of wine in front of the television, but being out in the countryside is a purer form of relaxation. I forget about work and family tensions, and begin to blend into the surroundings. There is no one other than Nigel to see or hear me and, with little visual distraction, my mind calms. I am aware of the breeze on my face, the rustle (沙沙声) of leaves, and as I watch the clouds slowly changing color against the sky like a natural sound and light show, it feels fascinating.
Having got used to the dark, we continue walking and the path that leads up the escarpment (峭壁) of Saxon Down now appears to almost shine in front of us. We climb carefully, feeling our way on the uneven ground. Walking at night is not without risk, but with knowledge and preparation it opens up a new side to walking.
As we reach the top, Lewes appears below as a twinkly mass of lights, a sight I would generally consider as inviting. In just a few hours, however, I find myself unwilling to walk back down. Walking at night is like discovering a new world on your doorstep. As Henry David Thoreau wrote in Night and Moonlight: “Night is certainly more novel and less profane (世俗的) than day.”
5.According to Nigel Berman, why is walking at night significant
A.It helps people appreciate natural surroundings.
B.It is a way to take risks and explore new places.
C.It improves our vision and sharpens other senses.
D.It makes us avoid distractions from work and family.
6.Why did the author feel alarmed when Nigel told them not to bring a torch
A.He was afraid of getting lost in the dark.
B.He hardly had any trust in Nigel as a guide.
C.He didn’t know how to use his night vision.
D.He worried about the way on uneven ground.
7.The night walk brought the following benefits to the author except ________.
A.a reconnection with nature
B.a chance of abandoning wine
C.an escape from daily tensions
D.an approach to getting relaxed
8.What can we learn about the author from the article
A.He had gone for a walk on his own at night before.
B.He intentionally picked a cloudy night for his walk.
C.He enjoyed the feeling after reaching the top of the mountain.
D.He badly wanted to go home to have a glass of wine after the walk.
9.What is the article mainly about
A.Describing his night hike through the countryside.
B.Contrasting the experience of day and night walking.
C.Encouraging readers to go on a night walk themselves.
D.Exploring the history of human connection with nature.
5.A 6.C 7.B 8.C 9.A
根据第三段中Nigel Berman所说的话“Only in the past few hundred years have we shut ourselves off from our natural surroundings. Walking at night is a powerful way of reconnecting(只有在过去的几百年里,我们才把自己与自然环境隔绝开来。 故选A。
根据第四段中“When Nigel told me not to bring a torch, I was alarmed. I can’t remember the last time I used my night vision and I’m not even sure how it works.(当Nigel 告诉我不要带火把时,我吓了一跳。
根据第四段中“Normally, at this time of night, I would be having a glass of wine in front of the television, but being out in the countryside is a purer form of relaxation. I forget about work and family tensions, and begin to blend into the surroundings.(通常这个时候,我会在电视机前喝一杯葡萄酒,但是在乡下是一种更纯粹的放松方式。
根据最后一段中“As we reach the top, Lewes appears below as a twinkly mass of lights, a sight I would generally consider as inviting. In just a few hours, however, I find myself unwilling to walk back down.(当我们到达顶部时,Lewes出现在下面,像一团闪烁的灯光,我通常认为这种景象很吸引人。
故选A。

José Andrés is a famous Spanish-American chef with many restaurants in the United States. He has also helped provide food to people after natural disasters with his World Central Kitchen.
He has a new television series called “José Andrés and Family in Spain. ” In the show, he travels with his three America-raised daughters through Spain. Andrés always goes into a restaurant kitchen in Spain and sees a large eel (鳗鱼). Andrés watches as cooks prepare the eel.
Andrés’ daughters, Carlota, Inés and Lucia Andrés, join their dad as they visit places like Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Asturias. The chef was born in Asturias, and the food there made him who he is. The new program is a travel show, a cooking show and a parenting show, all at once.
José Andrés has a deep love for food and for where it comes from. He includes both respected restaurants and street food in the new show. Tapas, which are small plates of food often served in Spanish restaurants, are a good representation of Andrés’ philosophy on eating. Eating tapas, he goes from place to place eating many things, cold and hot, fish and meat and vegetables. During it all, José Andrés supports Spanish cuisine, and he thinks it is really the pride of his life. In Valencia, the travelers ate paella, a traditional Spanish rice dish. “You think you’ve tasted the real thing — think again, ” the chef says.
The family hopes that the series will inspire other families to go out and explore, especially after almost three years of the COVID-19. “Everybody thinks that we have to travel to the remote parts of the world, have some thrilling memories or take some wonderful photos. However, the excitement is not in places but these things. The excitement is within ourselves,” said José.
