It was a hot day in late summer. I was a young dad working in a local lumber mill(伐木场).It was dangerous, back-breaking work that paid very little. In the year I had worked there, only four other people hadn’t been replaced with new faces. Those of us who stayed did so only because there was no other work to find to support our families.
One day, we were working hard. Suddenly, a voice called out, “Hey! A deer!” A lost little deer had wandered through the open doors and was now cowering(畏缩) in between the huge piles of lumber. All of us stopped working and went to look for her as she ran about crazily looking for a way out.
Now most people in the town where I live hunt deer in the fall but also treat them with great kindness the rest of the year. Some will even buy many bags of corn to help feed them during the tough winter months. It was no surprise then all of us were soon quickly working together to free this little deer. By blocking off all the other routes we were able to guide her desperate search back to the open doors. We watched as she ran out of the building and back into the woods. Then we walked back to work. I noticed something, though. On every face there was a joyful smile. It was as if this one single act of kindness had energized us again and reminded us of what life is all about.
Committing acts of kindness shows us the power that we have. They also bring us closer to love. Fill your day and your life with acts of kindness then Let them light up your life Let them lead you to love.

Everyone knows that the choices we make affect our future. Suppose I am an intelligent student with good marks. However, being lazy, I do badly in my examinations. I am refused entry to university and cannot find a good job. The golden future I had imagined will never be. All these are all from a bad choice!
However, your choices affect your future in a way that is a lot more complicated. This is because nearly all the choices you make affect your character. Your character is displayed through your choices, but it is also formed by them. Whenever you make a choice, your character changes or grows, or diminishes (降低, 减弱) depending on whether the decision you made is wise or foolish. Your character is being made by you, bit by bit, choice by choice. And so, you become the sort of person who will make a certain kind of choice in a certain situation.
Some will argue this is not true. After all, the field of human choice is a narrow one. Most of the things that form us in our lives are not subject to choice. We cannot choose when and where to be born, whether our families will be rich or poor, kind or cruel. We cannot even entirely control who we will meet in our lives. With so much that we cannot choose, how can we be said to be responsible for anything
There is some truth in this. We are thrown into life without any say over the matter, and have little control over most of it. However, we do have some power of choice, and we do control the most important thing of all: how we respond to circumstances. We can choose to keep struggling in hard times, or to give up.
This ability to choose how we behave and respond is a great gift. It is our key to having confidence in the future. It is human nature to fear the future, as the future is unknown. You cannot entirely control what will happen to you tomorrow. But if you have confidence in your character, formed by years of making good choices, then you do know one thing for certain about the future: no matter what happens, you will make a choice that you will be proud of.
At every moment, then, practise forming your character when you make your choices, no matter how small they are. Remember: your choices form your character. And your character determines your future.
46.With the example in paragraph1, the author intends to show that ________.
A.a good choice of job is a guarantee of one’s bright future
B.intelligent people always tend to be somewhat lazy
C.a bad choice of being lazy may affect one’s life bit by bit
D.a golden future will never be if one is refused by university
47.Your choices may affect your future in a complicated way because ________.
A.your future is solely determined by a certain choice
B.your choices and character shape each other, finally influencing the future
C.your future can only be formed if the choices are right
D.your character is always changing and so is your future
48.What does the underlined part mean in paragraph. 3
A.not chosen as a subject to learn B.not based on your choices
C.not depended on your future D.not affected by your pleasure
49.According to the passage, why is the ability to choose how we behave considered a great gift
A.It guarantees you to have confidence in the future.
B.It ensures complete control over one’s future life.
C.It eliminates your fear of the unknown future.
D.It provides you a favorable future as expected.
50.What do the “choice” mentioned in the passage refer to
A.Choose to be a brave man with nothing to fear of.
B.Choose to be a hardworking man to get a bright future.
C.Choose to have a positive response to the unknown future.
D.Choose to have a determined mind to keep struggling.
【答案】46.C 47.B 48.B 49.A 50.C
根据第一段“Everyone knows that the choices we make affect our future. Suppose I am an intelligent student with good marks. However, being lazy, I do badly in my examinations. I am refused entry to university and cannot find a good job. The golden future I had imagined will never be. All these are all from a bad choice!(每个人都知道我们所做的选择会影响我们的未来。假设我是一个聪明的学生,成绩好。然而,由于懒惰,我在考试中表现很差。我被大学拒之门外,也找不到好工作。我想象中的金色未来永远不会实现。所有这些都是一个糟糕的选择!)”可推知,通过第1段中的例子,作者想要表明一个懒惰的坏选择可能会一点一点地影响一个人的生活。故选C。
47.细节理解题。根据第二段“This is because nearly all the choices you make affect your character. Your character is displayed through your choices, but it is also formed by them. Whenever you make a choice, your character changes or grows, or diminishes (降低, 减弱) depending on whether the decision you made is wise or foolish. Your character is being made by you, bit by bit, choice by choice. And so, you become the sort of person who will make a certain kind of choice in a certain situation.(这是因为你所做的几乎所有选择都会影响你的角色。你的性格是通过你的选择展现出来的,但它也是由你的选择形成的。每当你做出选择时,你的性格就会改变、成长或减弱,这取决于你所做的决定是明智的还是愚蠢的。你的性格是由你一点一点、一个选择一个选择塑造出来的。因此,你成为了那种在特定情况下会做出特定选择的人)”可知,你的选择可能会以一种复杂的方式影响你的未来,因为你的选择和性格相互影响,最终影响未来。故选B。
48.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Most of the things that form us in our lives are(构成我们的大多数事情都是……)”以及后文“We cannot choose when and where to be born, whether our families will be rich or poor, kind or cruel. We cannot even entirely control who we will meet in our lives. (我们无法选择出生的时间和地点,无法选择家庭的富裕还是贫穷,无法选择善良还是残酷)”可知,我们无法选择出生的时间和地点,无法选择家庭的富裕还是贫穷,无法选择善良还是残酷,也就是说,在我们的生活中,构成我们的大多数事情都是无法选择的,即不是基于你的选择。故划线词部分指的是“不是基于你的选择”。故选B。
49.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“It is human nature to fear the future, as the future is unknown. You cannot entirely control what will happen to you tomorrow. But if you have confidence in your character, formed by years of making good choices, then you do know one thing for certain about the future: no matter what happens, you will make a choice that you will be proud of.(害怕未来是人类的天性,因为未来是未知的。你不能完全控制明天会发生什么。但是,如果你对自己的性格有信心,多年来做出的正确选择形成了你的性格,那么你对未来有一件事是肯定的:无论发生什么,你都会做出一个让你感到自豪的选择)”可知,选择自己行为的能力被认为是一种伟大的天赋,是因为它保证你对未来有信心。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“But if you have confidence in your character, formed by years of making good choices, then you do know one thing for certain about the future: no matter what happens, you will make a choice that you will be proud of.(但是,如果你对自己的性格有信心,多年来做出的正确选择形成了你的性格,那么你对未来有一件事是肯定的:无论发生什么,你都会做出一个让你感到自豪的选择)”可推知,未来是未知的,但是如果选择对未来有信心,有积极的反应,那么会做出一个让你感到自豪的选择。
D
Teenagers are self-contradictory. That’s a mild and objective way of saying something that parents often express with considerably stronger language. But the-self-contradiction scientific and personal. In adolescence, helpless and dependent children who have relied on grown-ups for just about everything become independent people who can take care of themselves and help each other. At the same time, once cheerful-and obedient children become rebellious teenage risk-takers.
A new study published in the journal Child Development, by Eveline Crone of the University of Leiden and colleagues, suggests that the positive and negative sides of teenagers go hand in hand. The study is part of a new wave of thinking about adolescence. For a long time, scientists and policy makers concentrated on the idea that teenagers were a problem that needed to be solved. The new work emphasizes that adolescence is a time of opportunity as well as risk.
The researchers studied “prosocial”(亲社会)and rebellious traits in more than 200 children and young adults, ranging from 11 to 28 years old. The participants filled out questionnaires about how often they did things that were selfless and positive, like sacrificing their own interests to help a friend, or rebellious and negative, like getting drunk or staying out late.
Other studies have shown that rebellious behavior increases as you become a teenager and then fades away as you grow older. But the new study shows that, interestingly, the same is true for prosocial behavior. Teenagers were more likely than younger children or adults to report that they did things like unselfishly help a friend.
Most significantly, there was a positive correlation between prosociality and rebelliousness. The teenagers who were more rebellious were also more likely to help others. The good and bad sides of adolescence seem to develop together. Is there some common factor that underlies these apparently contradictory developments One idea is that teenage behavior is related to what researchers call “reward sensitivity.” Decision-making always involves balancing rewards and risks, benefits and costs. “Reward sensitivity” measures how much reward it takes to outweigh risk.
Teenagers are particularly sensitive to social rewards—winning the game, impressing a new friend, getting that boy to notice you. Reward sensitivity, like prosocial behavior and risk-taking, seems to go up in adolescence and then down again as we age. Somehow, when you hit 30, the chance that something exciting and new will happen at that party just doesn’t seem to outweigh the effort of getting up off the couch.
51.According to Paragraph 1, children growing into adolescence tend to .
A.see the world in an unreasonable way
B.develop opposite personality traits
C.have fond memories of their past
D.show affection for their parents
52.It can be learned from Paragraph 2 that Crone’s study .
A.provides a new insight into adolescence
B.explores teenagers’ social responsibilities
C.examines teenagers’ emotional problems
D.highlights negative adolescent behavior
53.What does Crone’s study find about prosocial behavior
A.It results from the wish to cooperate.
B.It tends to peak in adolescence.
C.It is cultivated through education.
D.It is subject to family influence.
54.It can be learned from the last two paragraphs that teenagers .
A.overstress their influence on others
B.become anxious about their future
C.endeavor to live a joyful life
D.care a lot about social recognition
55.What is the text mainly about
A.Why teenagers are risk-sensitive.
B.How teenagers develop prosociality.
C.Why teenagers are self-contradictory.
D.How teenagers become independent.
【答案】51.B 52.A 53.B 54.D 55.C
根据第一段中“In adolescence, helpless and dependent children who have relied on grown-ups for just about everything become independent people who can take care of themselves and help each other. At the same time, once cheerful-and obedient children become rebellious teenage risk-takers.(在青春期,无助和依赖成年人的孩子几乎在所有事情上都依赖成年人,成为能够照顾自己和互相帮助的独立的人。与此同时,曾经快乐听话的孩子变成了叛逆的青少年冒险者。)”可知,进入青春期后的少年,性格上会反转:曾经的无助、依赖的孩子会变得能够照顾自己、独立;曾经快乐听话的孩子变成了叛逆的青少年冒险者。故选B。
52.推理判断题。根据第二段“A new study published in the journal Child Development, by Eveline Crone of the University of Leiden and colleagues, suggests that the positive and negative sides of teenagers go hand in hand. The study is part of a new wave of thinking about adolescence. For a long time, scientists and policy makers concentrated on the idea that teenagers were a problem that needed to be solved. The new work emphasizes that adolescence is a time of opportunity as well as risk.(莱顿大学的伊芙琳·克罗恩及其同事在《儿童发展》杂志上发表的一项新研究表明,青少年的积极和消极一面是相辅相成的。这项研究是对青春期新一波思考的一部分。很长一段时间以来,科学家和政策制定者都认为青少年是一个需要解决的问题。这项新研究强调,青春期是一个充满机遇和风险的时期。)”可知,克罗恩的调查表明,青少年的积极和消极一面是相辅相成的。同时,这项新研究强调,青春期是一个充满机遇和风险的时期。可推知,该研究提供了对青春期的新见解。故选A。
根据第四段中“Other studies have shown that rebellious behavior increases as you become a teenager and then fades away as you grow older. But the new study shows that, interestingly, the same is true for prosocial behavior.(其他研究表明,叛逆行为在青少年时期会增加,然后随着年龄的增长而逐渐消失。但有趣的是,这项新研究表明,亲社会行为也是如此。)”可知,其他研究表明:叛逆行为在青少年时期会增加,然后随着年龄的增长而逐渐消失,克罗恩的研究中,亲社会的行为也是如此,即亲社会行为像叛逆行为一样,会在青少年时达到顶峰,之后会逐渐消失。故选B。
54.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“Most significantly, there was a positive correlation between prosociality and rebelliousness. “Reward sensitivity” measures how much reward it takes to outweigh risk.(最重要的是,亲社会与叛逆之间存在正相关。更叛逆的青少年也更有可能帮助别人。青春期的好与坏似乎是同时发展的。这些明显矛盾的发展背后是否存在一些共同因素?一种观点认为,青少年的行为与研究人员所说的“奖励敏感性”有关。决策总是涉及到平衡回报与风险、利益与成本。”“奖励敏感性”衡量的是需要多少回报才能超过风险。)”最后一段中“Teenagers are particularly sensitive to social rewards—winning the game, impressing a new friend, getting that boy to notice you. Reward sensitivity, like prosocial behavior and risk-taking, seems to go up in adolescence and then down again as we age.
That’s a mild and objective way of saying something that parents often express with considerably stronger language. But the-self-contradiction scientific and personal. In adolescence, helpless and dependent children who have relied on grown-ups for just about everything become independent people who can take care of themselves and help each other. At the same time, once cheerful-and obedient children become rebellious teenage risk-takers.(青少年是自相矛盾的。
When Poppy Johnson, a 23-year-old London-based college student, was only five, she accidentally saw Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. Ever since then, she has been suffering from a fear of pop legend Michael Jackson.
Every time she sees or hears anything about Michael Jackson — a song, an interview or even a poster, she will experience a moment of fear. Her fear even grows stronger at home, as Poppy’s parents are big fans of Michael Jackson and have a collection of souvenirs around their house. But she never tells them this would add to her fear at home. Poppy explained, “I never really spoke about it or told it to other people, as I worried they’d think I was silly.”
Managing her fear of Michael Jackson hasn’t been easy for Poppy, who would often excuse herself whenever she was out with her friends and a Michael Jackson song started playing. She would then spend a few minutes somewhere else trying to take her mind off it.
Earlier this year, when the documentary Finding Neverland came out, news and photos of Michael Jackson were everywhere online. At that time, Poppy’s life was quite tough and she always felt that her heart was in her mouth.
Poppy recently started opening up about her unusual fear and even started taking steps to handle it. She started seeing a hypnotherapist (催眠师). After four weeks, she now says things are getting better. In addition, she told her parents that the things related to Michael Jackson at home made her feel fearful and finally her parents understood her and completely removed all the things about Michael Jackson.
Now Poppy’s situation is getting better and better. She reminds anyone else who experiences similar things that it is important to seek help as early as possible.
56.What made Poppy feel fearful at home (no more than 10 words)
57.How did Poppy usually avoid things related to Michael Jackson in public (no more than 10 words)
58.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 mean (no more than 5 words)
59.What did Poppy do to deal with her fear (no more than 15 words)
60.What do you think of Poppy’s situation and what is your suggestion (no more than 20 words)
56.The souvenirs about Michael Jackson collected by her parents. 57.By trying to go somewhere to focus on something else. 58.She felt very frightened. 59.She turned to a hypnotherapist for help and opened her heart to her parents. 60.I think that her situation is fearful. It’s unwise to keep problems to ourselves and we should bravely face problems and ask for help.
根据第二段前两句“Every time she sees or hears anything about Michael Jackson—a song, an interview or even a poster, she will experience a moment of fear. Her fear even grows stronger at home, as Poppy’s parents are big fans of Michael Jackson and have a collection of souvenirs around their house.”(每当她看到或听到任何关于迈克尔·杰克逊的东西——一首歌、一次采访甚至一张海报,她都会感到恐惧。 The souvenirs about Michael Jackson collected by her parents.
根据第三段“Managing her fear of Michael Jackson hasn’t been easy for Poppy, who would often excuse herself whenever she was out with her friends and a Michael Jackson song started playing. She would then spend a few minutes somewhere else trying to take her mind off it.”(对波比来说,克服对迈克尔·杰克逊的恐惧并不容易,每当她和朋友出去玩,听到迈克尔·杰克逊的歌时,她就会找借口走开。 By trying to go somewhere to focus on something else.
根据第四段第一句“Earlier this year, when the documentary Finding Neverland came out, news and photos of Michael Jackson were everywhere online.”(今年早些时候,当纪录片《寻找梦幻岛》上映时,迈克尔·杰克逊的新闻和照片在网上到处都是。) 故推知her heart was in her mouth意为“感到害怕的”。 She felt very frightened.
根据第五段“Poppy recently started opening up about her unusual fear and even started taking steps to handle it. She started seeing a hypnotherapist. After four weeks, she now says things are getting better. In addition, she told her parents that the things related to Michael Jackson at home made her feel fearful and finally her parents understood her and completely removed all the things about Michael Jackson.”(波比最近开始公开她不寻常的恐惧,甚至开始采取措施来处理它。 She turned to a hypnotherapist for help and opened her heart to her parents.
I think that her situation is fearful . It’s unwise to keep problems to ourselves and we should bravely face problems and ask for help.或I think her situation gives us a good warning lesson. It is important to seek help as early as possible, whoever experiences similar things.
