Seventy-three-year-old Gary selected his food in Value Mart more carefully than NASA chose its candidates for the space shuttle. Skim milk was $2.99, on sale from $3.49; white bread, 89 cents with a discount; table salt, 99 cents, 20 cents off the regular price. Leaving the cashier(收银员), he estimated that he had saved 80 cents today. He was pleased that he had got good value for his money again.
At the exit, the cold wind reminded him of his gloves. “Now where are they ” Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. The worried man made a thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old Gary had bought the black gloves at a 25% discount ten years ago. His quick decision to buy the expensive gloves turned out to be a good one, which even promoted his social status on the bus, as poorer passengers stared at him enviously. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
Gary re-entered the store with long steps. He followed the same route he had walked before. There were all open passages and it did not take long to be convinced that the gloves were not in sight.
“Society has changed, people have changed”, he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Not any more!”
On his way out, he went over to the cashier to ask if she had received any lost gloves. She asked him what colour they were, and when he said “black”, there came a disappointing answer. He took his time now, finally walking out of the store.
Back home, Gary was at a loss. In deep winter, he could not do without a pair of gloves. He was very upset that people no longer returned things they found on the road.
After a month, Gary decided to buy another leather pair. Before boarding the subway, he stepped into Value Mart again to see if by any chance his gloves had been returned to the lost and found office. “What colour are they ” the woman in the office asked again. “Black,” he gave the same answer. She looked into her drawer and drew out a pair of men’s leather gloves. “Are they ”
“Yes! Those are mine!” Gary exclaimed, his eyes glowing with joy.
4.According to the passage, Gary thought his buying the gloves to be ______.
A. unnecessary. B. wise. C. hot-headed. D. adventurous.
5.What can we infer about Gary
A. He is not wealthy.
B. He is particular about food.
C. He holds a pessimistic attitude towards life.
D. He doesn’t get along well with his neighborhood
6.In Gary’s opinion, why couldn’t he recover his gloves at first
A. He was not careful enough.
B. The cashier forgot to return his gloves.
C. A customer took his gloves by mistake.
D. Someone picked up his gloves and kept them on purpose.
7.What is the best title for this passage
A. Searching for gloves. B. The stolen gloves returned.
C. Declining moral standards D. A forgetful but stubborn old man.
Scientists have always been interested in the high level of organization in ant societies. American researchers have watched ants build life-saving rafts to keep afloat during floods. They also have recorded how ants choose their next queen — the female whose job is to produce eggs.
New technology is helping to improve researchers’ understanding of the insects. But there is still a lot to be learned.
Fire ants living in Brazilian forests are perfectly at home in an environment where flooding is common. To save themselves, the insects connect their legs together and create floating rafts. Some ant rafts can be up to 20 centimeters wide.
David Hu is an engineer with the Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech, saying, "If you have 100 ants, which means 600 legs, 99 percent of those legs will be connected to a neighbor. So they’re very, very good at keeping this network."
David Hu and other Georgia Tech researchers wanted to study ants and the secret of their engineering. They froze ant rafts and then looked at them with the help of computed technology, or CT images. The pictures showed that larger ants serve in central positions to which smaller ants hold. The larger ants create pockets of air that keep the insects afloat.
Scientists say small robots or materials that can change shape could be programmed in a similar way, working towards a shared goal.
Researchers at North Carolina State University are also studying ants. They examined how Indian jumping ants choose the leader of the colony when they lose their top female or queen.
8.The author takes fire ants as an example to tell us ________.
A. how ants survive B. how ants seek food
C. how ants communicate D. how ants live together
9.What can we know from what David Hu said in paragraph 4
A. Ants know the way to keep in touch in the river.
B. Ants know the way to join together closely.
C. Ants know the way to look for each other.
D. Ants know the way to build a large raft.
10.Why did the larger ants serve in central positions in their ant rafts
A. To stress their importance. B. To help all the ants float.
C. To fight against the enemies. D. To defend their top female.
11.What ideas do the ants give us according to the passage
A. We can use similar-shaped machines in flooding areas.
B. We can combine small robots or materials into larger ones.
C. Small and shape-changeable things might work just like ants do.
D. Small robots or materials in the shape of ants can be made.
On Nov. 16, seven astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) woke up to an alarm . A Russian missile (导弹) test had just bombed a satellite into more than 1, 500 pieces of space debris (残骸). Some got very close to the ISS.
NASA says space debris like this can travel at more than 28, 000 km/h. That’s much faster than a bullet (子弹) (about 3, 500 km/h). Even a pea-sized piece of debris could “wipe out” a space station or kill an astronaut if he or she is doing a spacewalk, says Live Science.
Since the 1950s, humans have sent thousands of rockets and satellites into space. Many are still there, and we now face an ever-increasing problem of space rubbish. In 2006, for example, National Geographic reported that a tiny piece of space rubbish hit the ISS, taking a small piece of glass out of a window. In June of this year, a piece of debris ran into one of the station’s robotic arms, which are just like the arms of a robot, and left a hole.
Scientists are trying different ways to deal with the problem. One way is to use a huge net. In 2018, the UK’s Survey Space Center caught some space rubbish with a net in an experiment. It first found the debris, and then collected it with a net and a harpoon (鱼叉).
Another way is to use robotic arms. Clear Space 1, the European Space Agency’s task to clean space rubbish, is going to be sent into space in 2025. It will use robotic arms to catch debris. This plans to throw the debris into Earth’s atmosphere, where it will burn up as it falls because of strong friction (摩擦).
12.The bomb of the Russian missile mainly causes ________ according to the article.
A. plants B. soil C. space debris D. food
13.According to NASA, space debris moves ________as fast as a bullet.
A. eight times B. nine times C. seven times D. six times
14.What happens to a space station if it gets “wiped out”?
A. It gets cleaned. B. It gets rebuilt. C. It gets old. D. It gets broken.
15.What can we infer from Paragraph 3-4
A. There is nothing we can do to deal with space debris.
B. The astronauts are quite safe in space even there is space debris.
C. Thousands of old rockets and satellites are turning into space rubbish for years.
D. More and more tasks are failing because we don’t want to cause space rubbish.

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, which I knew deeply from my grandson. As a result of a rare disease, I lost most of my hair. Being hairless felt strange, I tried to cover my head. I experimented with each of my hats to find a proper covering. Unfortunately, they were all either too warm or too tight. It was really painful.
During the day, I usually put on a scarf at home. However, wore is away from the house. The wig certainly improved my appearance, but it wasn’t comfortable enough to wear for long periods of time.
When my grandchildren visited me some months later, I wore my wig all the time. I put it on when I got up in the morning and didn’t take it off until bedtime. Since the piece looked similar to my natural hair, the kids weren’t aware of the difference.
All went well until my four-year-old granddaughter unexpectedly walked into my bedroom one morning. I was taking a shower and had temporarily placed my wig on top of a lampshade to keep it from flattening. My granddaughter saw the wig hanging over the lampshade and cried in terror (恐惧). She tore out of the room, sounding the alarm that something terrible had happened to her grandma. She grabbed her brother and dragged him back into my room to investigate.
Wondering what was happening outside, I walked out of the bathroom, with a bathrobe but nothing on my head. I couldn’t understand why my granddaughter was looking at me as if I were a monster (怪兽) from outer space.
She continued to stare at me in panic, as if wondering why this hairless creature was wearing her grandmother’s clothes. Where had her grandmother gone, and who was this strange person with the hairless head
My grandson, who was seven and had heard about my disease, understood a few things about wigs. He tried to calm his sister, but she was still too upset to recognize me.

48.答案: I explained to her that the wig was fake hair. Still dumbfounded as she was, she seemed calm this time, with her jewel-like eyes scanning me again and again. A tinge of crimson creeping upon her cheeks, she embraced the situation and laboriously asked me. “Real grandma Why is your hair fake ” Half expected and half concerned whether she would accept my true appearance under the wig, I uttered in a gentle voice, “My dear, that’s just owing to a rare disease that infected me…” Much to my surprise, she cracked a smile and hugged me merrily, acclaiming, “Great! You are my grandma!”
Several weeks after my grandchildren returned home, I received a small package. Curious about its content, I unwrapped it with profound expectation. What came into my view was an exquisite hat weaved by hand. Attached to the package was a letter, saying, “Grandma, we made a new hat for you, so you will no longer tolerate the wig!” Hardly had I finished it when I was rooted there, with a flush of warmness welling up in my heart. From then on, I threw away the wig and each time I went outside, I would wear that hat. It’s a mixture of pure love and care, giving me strength forever.
