As for old people, some of the applications are hard to use because they didn’t grow up with them. They don’t have simple models of how they should work, what to do when something doesn’t work or where to go for help. We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.
I think there is huge potential and we are designing it. The ability to connect to friends, who remember the same movies and news and music, is really important, especially as people get old. They end up in retirement homes and they aren’t always close to their friends. Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family is a really powerful thing.
My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internet, although it took me years to get her to use e-mail. She was born with normal hearing, but lost it when she was 3. She was totally deaf for many years, until age 53, when she got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her. But before then, her friends couldn’t call her on the phone, so they insisted she use e-mail to communicate with them.
Young people don’t even think of the Internet as technology. It’s just there, and they use it. There’s been a very interesting change in communication styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are now in their teens and aren’t willing to make phone calls. And they think of e-mail as old-fashioned and slow.
The reason why teens don’t make phone calls seems to be that they don’t know what to say. When they call they often stop for a while. They don’t know what to say, and there’s this silence. On the other hand, texting is considered proper, and it’s okay if you don’t answer. You might have been distracted(分心的). It’s not considered rude. But it is considered strange if you’re in this kind of voice conversation and simply stop talking.
16.We can infer from the passage that the author is a ________.
A.company manager
B.program designer
C.college professor
D.mobile phone designer
17.What do the young people think of the Internet according to the passage
A.Interesting. B.Amazing.
C.Boring. D.Common.
18.Why do teens like to send texts to communicate with others
A.To save money.
B.To maintain friendship.
C.To avoid embarrassment.
D.To make communication much easier.
19.What is the trouble that old people meet when surfing the Internet
A.They don’t know how to use some applications.
B.They have to buy electronic productions at a high price.
C.There is no professional teacher to teach them how to use the Internet.
D.They have no friends to communicate with online.
根据倒数第二段中的“Young people don’t even think of the Internet as technology. It’s just there, and they use it. (年轻人甚至不觉得网络是技术,它存在,他们使用)”可知,年轻人认为网络是很平常的东西,认为是理所当然的事,故选D项。
18.【答案】C
【解析】细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“On the other hand, texting is considered proper, and it’s okay if you don’t answer. You might have been distracted(分心的). It’s not considered rude. But it is considered strange if you’re in this kind of voice conversation and simply stop talking. (另一方面,发短信会更合适,且如果你不回答也是没关系的。你可以会分心,但不会认为是不礼貌的。但是如果你在对话中突然不说话了,就会被理解为奇怪了)”可知,青少年喜欢发短信的原因是为了避免突然不知道说什么而引起的尴尬,故选C项。
19.【答案】A
根据第一段中的“As for old people, some of the applications are hard to use because they didn’t grow up with them. (对于老年人来说,一些应用软件很难使用,是因为他们成长过程中没有这些东西。)”可知,老年人上网遇到的麻烦是他们不知道如何使用一些应用程序,故选A项。

Professor Barry Wellman of the University of Toronto in Canada has invented a term to describe the way many North Americans interact these days. The term is “networked individualism”. This concept is not easy to understand because the words seem to have opposite meanings. How can we be individuals (个人) and be networked at the same time You need other people for networks.
Here is what Professor Wellman means. Before the invention of the Internet and e-mail, our social networks included live interactions (互动) with relatives, neighbors, and friends. Some of the interaction was by phone, but it was still voice, person to person, in real time.
A recent research study by the Pew Internet and American Life project showed that for a lot of people, electronic interaction through the computer has replaced this person-to-person interaction. However, a lot of people interviewed for the Pew study say that’s a good thing. Why
In the past, many people were worried that the Internet isolated us and caused us to spend too much time in the imaginary world of the computer. But the Pew study discovered that the opposite is true. The Internet connects us with more real people than expected-helpful people who can give advice on careers, medical problems, raising children, and choosing a school or college. About 60 million Americans told Pew that the Internet plays an important role in helping them make major life decisions.
Thanks to the computer, we are able to be alone and together with other people-at the same time!
20.The underlined phrase “networked individualism” probably means that by using computers people ________.
A.stick to their own ways no matter what other people say
B.have the rights and freedom to do things of their own interest
C.do things in their own ways and express opinions different from other people
D.are able to keep to themselves but at the same time reach out to other people
21.It can be inferred from the Pew study that________.
A.people have been separated from each other by using computers
B.the Internet makes people waste a lot of time and feel very lonely
C.the Internet has become a tool for a new kind of social communication
D.a lot of people regard the person-to-person communication as a good thing
22.Which would be the best title for this passage
A.We’re Alone on the Internet. B.We’re Communicating on the Internet.
C.We’re Alone Together on the Internet. D.We’re in the Imaginary World of the Internet.
根据第一段“Professor Barry Wellman of the University of Toronto in Canada has invented a term to describe the way many North Americans interact these days. The term is “networked individualism”. (加拿大多伦多大学的Barry Wellman教授发明了一个术语来描述当今许多北美人的互动方式。这个术语是“网络个人主义”。这个概念不容易理解,因为这些词似乎有相反的含义。我们怎样才能成为个体,同时又成为网络?网络需要其他人。)”可知,“网络个人主义”是指,人们在网络时代能够独处,但同时也能接触到其他人。故选D。
21.【答案】C
【解析】推理判断题。根据第三段“A recent research study by the Pew Internet and American Life project showed that for a lot of people, electronic interaction through the computer has replaced this person-to-person interaction. (皮尤互联网与美国生活项目最近的一项研究表明,对很多人来说,通过电脑进行的电子互动已经取代了这种人与人之间的互动。)”可知,皮尤的研究表明,互联网已经成为一种新型社会交流的工具。故选C。
22.【答案】C
【解析】主旨大意题。根据第一段“Professor Barry Wellman of the University of Toronto in Canada has invented a term to describe the way many North Americans interact these days. The term is “networked individualism”.
