Sirine Jahangir has been singing, writing and playing instruments since she was a little girl. She was badly injured in a traffic accident by the time she turned 5, so now the teen uses her gift “as a way to — not escape, but to help me through”. Not only did her passion get her through some difficult times, but when she was 14 it also brought her to the “Britain’s Got Talent” stage, where she impressed everyone with her performance.
Sirine was totally paralyzed by the time she was 10 years old. While her parents and doctors have tried to find treatments for her, there isn’t much they can do. So her parents focused on helping her adjust to her new life, which was when her dad said she was first introduced to music. “I remember one day, we were driving in the car. This is about when she was getting to the stage where she couldn’t look out the window anymore to see things, and I didn’t know what to do. I just put the music on really loud. She started singing in the car, and she was so happy. And then she just found happiness every time I put music on,” her father said.
It didn’t take long for them to realize Sirine had tremendous talent. When she appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent”, she told everyone just how much her passion means to her. “I guess music heals me,” she said. “That’s just what I live by, and music is my thing.” Then she headed over to the piano, where she played the piano and sang beautifully enough to bring the audience to tears! Unsurprisingly to everyone but Sirine, all four judges voted her into the next round of the competition!

When Joel Bueno informed his parents that he wanted to play music just like his elder twin brothers, the couple were shocked. It seemed an impossible wish to satisfy their adorable boy. But then they found Eye Harp—a gaze-activated digital instrument that their son, diagnosed with cerebral palsy (大脑性瘫痪), could play. Sitting in a hotel lobby about to go on stage, Joel says the Eye Harp—the name of the instrument as well as the company—brings him joy. But more than that, it enables him to express a range of emotions with others.
Zacharias Vamvakousis is the creative force behind Eye Harp. In 2008, he began looking into ways for disabled people to play music when a friend of his had a motorcycle accident that threatened his ability to play the guitar. It set him on a path that integrated his musical passion with his computer science skills.
Eye Harp became a mission. For many people with severe disabilities, expressing basic thoughts and feelings—let alone intentional creative expression—can be a challenge. But Dr. Vamvakousis’ combination of art and technology enables users to communicate from their soul by translating the smallest movements into musical notes on digital instruments of their choice. He created the not-for-profit Eye Harp Association in 2019, with the goal of making musical expression available to all.
The Eye Harp is in its fifth version. Now he’s focused on making the instrument as user-friendly as possible for music teachers and therapists (治疗师).“Playing music is a process that requires studying and having music classes,”he notes.“So if we want it to reach many people, we have to reach first the music teachers.”
Globally, around 50 million people could benefit from augmented (增强的) and alternative communication technology, Dr. Vamvakousis estimates. Currently, he says, fewer than 2% are so equipped. So far, around 650 people are using either the basic or advanced versions of Eye Harp.
43.Why is Joel Bueno’s experience mentioned in Paragraph 1
A.To show his passion for music. B.To introduce a cure for a brain disease.
C.To praise his strong will against disability. D.To present the function of a digital instrument.
44.What inspired Dr. Vamvakousis to invent Eye Harp
A.His sympathy for Joel Bueno. B.His eagerness to help his friend.
C.His pursuit of becoming a musician. D.His ambition to get a master’s degree.
45.What does Dr. Vamvakousis think of Eye Harp
A.It is thought poorly of. B.It is an expensive device.
C.It has benefited millions of people. D.It has an enormous potential market.
46.What is the best title for the text
A.Music: A Good Way to Find Your Inner Voice
B.Zacharias Vamvakousis: A Creative Musician
C.Eye Harp: New Hope for Disabled Music Lovers
D.Joel Bueno: A Disabled Boy with Strong Willingness

Stroke is the most important cause of disability for adults in the EU, which affects about 1. 1 million people each year. After a stroke, patients commonly need recovery to relearn to walk, talk, or perform daily tasks. Research has shown that music treatment can help stroke patients to recover language and motor function.
But for people who suffered a stroke, playing music may itself be a skill that needs to be relearned. Now, a study has shown novel soft robotics can help recovering patients to relearn playing music and other skills that require flexibility and coordination (协调) .
Dr Maohua Lin, a professor at Florida Atlantic University and colleagues designed and tested a “smart hand exoskeleton (外骨骼) ” in the shape of a multi-layered, flexible 3D-printed robo-glove, which weighs only 191g. The entire palm and wrist area of the glove are designed to be soft and flexible, and the shape of the glove can be custom-made to fit each wearer’s hand.
“While wearing the glove, human users have control over the movement of each finger to a significant extent,” said senior author Dr Erik Engeberg. “The glove is designed to assist and enhance their natural hand movements, allowing their fingers to bend and stretch freely.”
At the same time, the authors used machine learning to successfully teach the glove to “feel” the difference between playing a correct and incorrect versions of a beginner’s song on the piano. The glove can give feedback to the wearer either by touching, looking or listening. These would enable her or him to understand their performance and make improvements.
“But several challenges in this field need to be overcome. These include improving the accuracy and reliability of tactile sensing, enhancing the adaptability and flexibility of the exoskeleton design, and improving the machine learning algorithms to better interpret and respond to user input,” added Lin.
47.What is the smart hand exoskeleton
A.A flexible robo-glove. B.A light 3D-printed palm.
C.A multi-layered hand supporter. D.A smart monitor worn round wrist.
48.What does Erik Engeberg stress about the exoskeleton
A.Its simplicity of wearing. B.Its flexibility and softness.
C.Its assistance to patients’ fingers. D.Its significant application ranges.
49.Why does the exoskeleton offer feedback to stroke patients
A.To get charged in time. B.To regulate wearing period.
C.To control hand movements. D.To better musical performance.
50.What does Lin think of the design
A.It is hitting a bottleneck. B.It is far from satisfactory.
C.It is a challenge to human hands. D.It is well-received in the market.

Afterward, she said, “I can’t even say it’s a dream come true, because I didn’t even dream of it at any point... I never thought that would be realistic in my life.”
