II.Grammar and Vocabulary (每题1分;共20分)
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Do you know someone who is exceptionally picky when it comes to the food to eat, the clothes to wear, or the people to date Choosy people tend to be somewhat overly analytical - they carefully weigh the pros and cons of most decisions. As a result, they tend to take a lot of time 21 (make) up their minds.
Remember Jerry from Seinfeld He was extremely picky regarding the people he dated. Any physical flaw, 22 small, was Jerry’s reason for rejecting a possible dating partner. I had a friend who was like that. He didn’t like the shape of this girl’s chin, or another 23 ears were “too large for her face.” As a result, he rarely dated anyone.
A waitress told me a story of a particular picky woman. The restaurant had a special salad 24 tons of ingredients. This woman would go down the list of ingredients and say, “I don’t like cucumbers, take that out...take out the cilantro, no tomatoes, etc.” The waitress said that by the time she was done, it was 25 salad of just iceberg lettuce! People who are not picky - the opposite end of the scale - tend to be 26 (impulsive), flexible, and open to experience.
Our research found that some people are only picky in particular areas of their lives - eating, dating, or when 27 (evaluate) goods for purchase, although most were picky in most things. Picky people tend to analyze, and often overanalyze, the choices that they are about to make. Some of them can drive salespersons crazy as they hesitate, evaluate. and hesitate again.
A contractor(承包商), who 28 (remodel) a couple of houses, told me the story of two extreme clients. The first, who was extremely choosy, took forever to decideon bathroom fixtures, appliances, cabinets, and paint. 29 the non-picky one, looked at three similar colors and said, “They’re all ok, you choose.”
While choosy individuals 30 spend long time deciding, being analytical and slowing to act, non-choosy people’s impulsiveness may lead to quick, and unwise decisions. However, the truth is that non-choosy people may also make their quick decisions, and rationalize them to make them fit, even if it wasn’t the best decision in the first place.
Section B
Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
A.celebrate B.overlooked C. circumstances D.cast E. incredibly F. factors G. unspoken H. swim I. strongly J. normal K. assume
Self-Silencing Is Making Women Sick
In the late 1980s, Harvard-trained psychologist Dana Jack identified a recurring theme among female patients suffering from depression: a tendency to self-silence, defined as “the tendency to engage in uncontrollable caretaking, pleasing the other, and restriction of self-expression in relationships in an attempt to achieve intimacy and meet relational needs.” He found that this learned behavior, 31 rooted in gender norms, was linked to an increased risk of depression.
Since then, considerable evidence has revealed that female self-silencing isn’t just tied to psychological issues like depression and eating disorders, but also to physical illness. Most worryingly, it has also been linked to higher risk of premature death. This was true even when 32 such as age, blood pressure, and smoking were taken into account.
When women push their feelings down and 33 their needs aside, their health suffers. But it can be difficult for women to do otherwise in cultures that 34 these self-silencing practices. Moms are praised for being painstakingly selfless to the point of self-sacrifice. These 35 standards establish a vicious (恶性的) cycle. For many women, it feels easier—beneficial, even—to silence their needs at the expense of their own health, rather than 36 against the prevailing cultural current.
In his best-selling book, The Myth of Normal, physician and author Gabor Mate writes that many of our society’s most “normalized ways of being” are, in fact, 37 toxic. “That ‘not listening to self’ in order to prioritize others’ needs is a significant source of the health-impairing roles women 38 ,” Mate explains. “It is among the medically 39 but extremely harmful ways in which our society’s ‘normal’ imposes a major health cost on women.”
To reshape the virtues of womanhood, a new “ 40 ” needs to emerge—one in which we honor our emotions, prioritize our needs, and actively communicate our boundaries. Such a shift requires change on both the individual and societal level, and will by no means be easy. But it’s certainly worth it—after all, women’s lives depend on it.
III.Reading Comprehension (共45分。 41-45每题1分;56-70每题2分)
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context
AI, or deep learning, takes in massive amounts of data from a single domain and automatically learns from the data to make specific decisions within that domain. It can automatically optimize (优化) human-given goals with 41 memory and superhuman accuracy.
The potential applications for AI are extremely exciting, but the rise of AI also brings many 42 . It’s worth taking time to sort between the genuine risks of this coming technological revolution and the 43 that sometimes surround the topic.
First, let’s talk about job displacement. Because AI can 44 humans at routine tasks, it is technically capable of displacing hundreds of millions of white and blue collar jobs in the next 15 years or so.
But not every job will be replaced by AI. 45 , four types of jobs are not at risk at all. First there are creative jobs. AI needs to be given a 46 to optimize. It cannot 47 as scientists, novelists and artists can. Second, the complex, strategic jobs go well beyond the AI 48 of single domain and Big Data. Then there are the as-yet-unknown jobs that will be created by AI. Are you worried that these three types of jobs won’t employ as many people as AI will replace Not to worry, as the fourth type is much 49 : empathetic and compassionate jobs, such as teachers, nannies and doctors, which AI is not capable of. So there will still be jobs in the age of AI.
As well as job displacement. AI has the potential to 50 inequality - both between the super wealthy and the displaced workers and also among countries. Poorer and smaller countries will be unable to reap the economic rewards that will come with AI and less well placed to 51 job displacement.
The technology also poses serious challenges in terms of 52 . The consequences of hacking into AI - controlled systems could be severe.
Finally, there are the issues of privacy, worsened prejudices and manipulation (操纵). Sadly we’ve already seen 53 on this front. Facebook couldn’t resist the temptation to use AI technology to optimize usage and profit, at the expense of user privacy and increasing prejudices and division.
All of these risks require governments, businesses and technologists to 54 develop a new rule book for AI applications. And rather than compare against one another countries must share best practices and work together to ensure this technology is used for the 55 of all.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

In my hometown of Idaho Falls, beneath the elevated train tracks that paralleled West Yellowstone Highway, there was a hidden gem that aroused my curiosity. A small opening in the hill, easily missed if one wasn’t attentive, attracted me with its half-moon shape and stone-framed edges. Although it looked pointless, brilliant light poured through, creating a tapestry of thin trees covered in delicate, light green leaves — a symbol of freshness and new beginnings — and illuminating the space.
That image remains vivid in my mind, evoking a fanciful notion of a gateway to a secret world where wood nymphs and fairies have fun. I imagined an embrace of beautiful light, a peaceful place where I would feel secure and understood.
As a teenager, armed with a driver’s license, I fantasized about driving to that spot and finally stepping through the opening. However, I knew deep down that the moment I ventured closer, the enchantment (魔法) would disappear like morning mist.
Even in adulthood, I had a knack for summoning enchantment. I could marvel at drifting clouds, sensing their magical dance. Old forests showed an otherworldly wisdom, and seemingly coincidental events held a mystical fascination. But the pandemic, like a thief in the night, robbed me of that gift. Confined to our homes, the cries of our children merged with our own as we wrestled with teaching them reading and math. Weeks stretched into months, and months into years, eroding my ability to find enchantment in the boring life, leaving only the residue of a COVID-infected existence.
So when I picked up Katherine May’s newest book and read this bit, it felt really familiar:
“I have lost some fundamental part of my knowing, some basic human feeling. Without it, the world feels like tap water left overnight, flat and chemical, short of life. I am like lightning seeking earth. Uneasy. I need a better way to walk through this life. I want to be enchanted again.”
May has written an entire book about this, appropriately titled Enchantment: Awakening Wonder in an Anxious Age. I dog-eared almost every page in this book, as they mirrored my own experiences. It was a confirmation I desperately needed- the realization that I wasn’t alone in my struggle. May’s exploration of curiosity, imagination, and the quest for meaning in our lives became a profound reminder of the path I yearned to rediscover. Therefore, I can’t wait to recommend this book to you. You won’t be disappointed; you have my word.

)Cleaning up a messy bedroom can seem like a frightening task, but if you prepare a simple plan, you can clean up thoroughly and quickly. Here’s a basic speed cleaning roadmap:
■First, bring in a garbage bag and pick up trash around the room. Getting garbage out of the way ensures you’ll avoid spills or soiling linens like sheets or table-cloths while cleaning.
■Next, take care of the bed. An uncluttered bed with a smooth blanket and neat pillows sets the tone for the entire room. If you have time to change the sheets, do it first. If not, shake out the blanket on the floor to refresh it, and then make the bed. A neat bed can also hold items such as picture frames or books, where you can neatly line them up and easily put them back after cleaning.
■Put things in their proper place. Bring any kitchen items back to their rightful place. Place clothes either in the laundry bin, or make a pile in your closet to fold later. Put books in a neat pile or on a shelf. If you have items from other rooms lying around, start a sorting pile that you can remove and deal with later. We want the bedroom to be clean, and don’t want this whole thing turn into a game of “Where does this go ”
■Wipe down the furniture with microfiber dust wipes. Who needs polishing spray and a rag when you’re in a hurry! Pre-cut and folded microfiber cloths work great to dust furniture, a TV, bookshelves and picture frames.
■Vacuum or sweep the floor. This is an essential step, since a lot of dust and crumbs settle here. A quick run around the room will be effective. If you have more time, go for a second round.
To be consistent, start in one corner of the room and work your way around it in one direction. If you move aimlessly around, you can lose focus. Also, try to attack one chore at a time, instead of doing multiple chores at once. Once all these tasks are completed, your bedroom should look much more inviting!
60.What does the author suggest doing when we are about to organize the things in our rooms
A.Dealing with the items from other rooms immediately.
B.Playing a game of “Where does this go ”
C.Lining up the things on the bed.
D.Sorting the things and later dealing with them.
61.What does the author mean by saying “Who needs polishing spray and a rag when you’re in a hurry!” in the fifth paragraph
A.Polishing spray and rags are intended for specific people.
B.Polishing spray and rags are necessities to clean the furniture.
C.Polishing spray and rags can also clean the furniture but they take longer time.
D.Polishing spray and rags are useless if we have limited time to clean our bedroom.
62.Under the instruction of the speed cleaning roadmap, what is NOT recommended to do
A.Throw away the garbage in the room at first.
B.Change the sheet if time permits.
C.Do as many chores at a time as possible.
D.Clean the floor in the end.

One question I get a lot is around the topic of professional certifications. People want to know if they’re worth it. After all, professional certifications cost hundreds - if not thousands - of dollars. And most require a significant investment of time and energy on top of it. So, do professional certifications actually have a measurable career payoff
The simple answer is this: I am a firm believer in the importance of lifelong learning. The payoffs are not always immediate and they’re often difficult to attribute directly to any one particular certification.
Many people think of professional certifications as a tool for financial gain. Sometimes, yes, but not necessarily. For example, a recent Office-Team survey of the administrative profession found that employers pay up to 8%-more on average in the U. S. for employees who hold the MS Office Specialist certification. That’s a pretty clear and significant benefit! But it’s important to remember a few things when you hear that.
First, MS Office is a very heavily used software suite and people in the administrative field are deeply reliant on it in many organizations. The MS certification is well-known and highly reputable. Possessing it demonstrates expert-level mastery of the skills required to take advantage of systems like Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. It makes sense that employers are willing to pay a bit more for administrative professionals who have already proven their advanced mastery in these areas.
However, what they are really paying for is not the certificate itself - it’s the value a person can bring to the organization when they have these skills. The certificate just helps the organization identify those people who can deliver greater value, but you also have to show evidence of that value.
It’s not realistic to think that you can go to get a certificate and immediately demand more money. You have to use those skills to achieve more, and you have to be a vocal advocate for yourself and your accomplishments. That’s how you earn the rewards.
It’s also not realistic to expect that all certifications will have the same powerful impact. Not all are created equal. Some are not as well-known and some do not teach you the kinds of skills that result in measurable value to the organization.
That’s not to say that other certifications don’t matter. Sometimes, it’s not about the organization at all. Some people enjoy the process of certification because it enhances their confidence and allows them to connect with other like-minded professionals. Some people like learning purely for the sake of personal growth. These things might not yield a direct financial benefit, but they are indeed valuable to you and your career. Over time, that will pay off in more concrete ways.
You have to first know what you’re looking to gain to know whether or not it’s worth it, and you have to be insightful in your selection of certification programs.
63.Which statements is NOT true about professional certifications
A.Gaining professional certifications requires much money and energy.
B.Employers will pay more for employees holding certain certifications.
C.They indicate recognition of the mastery of skills for complex systems.
D.Certifications help organizations identify people who may bring value.
64.The author may probably agree that _________.
A.lifelong learning has nothing to do with gaining certifications
B.the investment in gaining certifications will immediately pay off
C.certifications help employees employ and advocate their skills
D.people can gain personal growth in the process of certification
65.What suggestion does the author put forward in terms of professional certifications
A.Know what you want and choose certification programs carefully.
B.Be a lifelong learner and care less about measurable career payoffs
C.The MS Office Specialist certification is reliable and worth a try.
D.Choose famous certification programs offering long-term gains.
66.Which in the following can be the best title
A.Do Certifications Equal Lifelong Learning
B.Do Certifications Guarantee Financial Gain
C.Are Professional Certifications Worth it
D.Be Insightful in Selecting Certification Programs
Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.
A.How the whole image is then assembled and perceived is still a mystery. B.Biological factors behind eye contact are being investigated. C.Personality can affect how a person reacts to eye contact. D.In adulthood, looking someone else in a pleasant way can be a complimentary sign of paying attention. E.Our findings indicate people do feel different when they are the centre of attention. F.It’s more likely to be associated with dominance of threat in conflicting situations, though.
In a social situation, eye contact with another person can show that you are paying attention in a friendly way. But it can also be antagonistic such as when a political candidate tums toward their competitor during a debate and makes eye contact that signals hostility. Here ‘s what hard science reveals about eye contact:
We know that a typical infant will instinctively gaze into its mother’s eyes, and she will look back. This mutual gaze is a major part of the attachment between mother and child. 67 . It can catch someone’s attention in a crowded room, “Eye contact and smile” can signal availability and confidence, a common-sense notion supported in studies by psychologist Monica Moore.
68 . Neuroscientist Bonnie Augeung found that the hormone oxytocin increased the amount of eye contact from men toward the interviewer during a brief interview when the direction of their gaze was recorded. This was also found in high- functioning men with some autistic spectrum symptoms, who may tend to avoid eye contact. Specific brain regions that respond during direct gaze are being explored by other researches, using advanced methods of brain scanning.
Eye contact can also be aggressive. With the use of eye-tracking technology, Julia Minson of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government concluded that eye contact can signal very different kinds of messages, depending on the situation. Eye contact may be a sign of connection or trust in friendly situations. 69 . Whether you’re a politician or a parent, it might be helpful to keep ‘in mind that trying to maintain eye contact may backfire if you’re trying to convince someone who has a different set of beliefs than you,“ said Minson.
Eye fixations are brief. When we look at a face or a picture, our eyes pause on one spot at a time, often on the eyes or mouth. These pauses typically occur at about three per second, and the eyes then jump to another spot, until several important points in the image are registered like a series of snapshots. 70 . And it is the subject of current research.
In people who score high in a test of neuroticism, a personality dimension associated with self-consciousness and anxiety, eye contact triggered more activity associated with avoidance, according to the Finnish researcher Jari Hietanen and colleagues. but that their brain reactions also differ-” A more direct finding is that people who scored high for negative emotions like anxiety looked at others for shorter periods of time and reported more comfortable feelings when others did not look directly at them.
IV.Summary Writing (共10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point( s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Is It Bad to Sleep With Wet Hair
If you shower before bed, you’ve probably wondered whether sleeping with damp hair is a problem. Maybe you’ve heard it could make you sick, or that it can damage your hair. What’s the truth
Let’s address the “it can make you sick” myth first. This idea seems to fit into the old bit of folklore that getting yourself chilled and wet will cause you to come down with a cold. However, it was long ago disproved. It’s true that you’re much more likely to catch a common cold during the winter months. But this has to do with viruses.
Another wet-hair rumor is the idea that harmful things will colonize your pillow. Some research has shown that pillows can harbor allergy-causing mircoorganisms. They tend to do well in damp environments. Scientifically, there’s no evidence that people who sleep with wet hair experience more allergy symptoms. But if you wake up with a stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, breathing problems or other allergy symptoms, you should wash your pillow cases in hot water at least once a week.
When it comes to the health of your hair, generally, it’s thought that sleeping with hair wet may damage your hair, leading to breakages and a loss of shine. But it’s worth noting that almost anything you do to your hair - from brushing and blow — drying it to coloring it or exposing it to the sun — can damage it. Using conditioner can help restore it.
There may be some mild risks associated with going to bed with wet hair. But of all the health concerns you could worry about, this one shouldn’t keep you up at night.

VI. Guided Writing (25%)
Dear School Leaders,
As the school prepares to use half a day for extracurricular activities after the midterm exams, I suggest that we choose option one, which is to carry out sports and arts-related activities.
Firstly, sports and arts activities can help students exercise, develop interests, teamwork spirit, and more. In addition, as an effective way to relieve stress and adjust learning status, the activities can help students release pressure, and devote themselves to learning and live more effectively.
Therefore, I recommend that specific implementation plans should be arranged according to the students’ ages and interests, such as basketball, soccer, dance, painting, etc., to encourage students to participate actively and experience the joy of extracurricular activities and their true benefits.
学霸作文供参考:
Dear School Administration,
I am writing to express my opinion regarding the upcoming extracurricular activities following the midterm exams. As the school is considering two options, I would like to weigh in on the matter.
In my view, I strongly recommend the second option, which involves visiting and exploring prestigious universities. This option provides students with a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand experience of higher education institutions and expand their horizons. By interacting with university faculty and experiencing campus life, students can gain insight into their future academic pursuits and career paths. Additionally, such visits can inspire and motivate students to set higher educational goals for themselves.
If the school decides to proceed with the university visit, I suggest organizing guided tours and informational sessions at the universities to maximize the benefits for the students. Furthermore, arranging interactive activities or talks with current university students or alumni can provide valuable insights and inspiration.
Thank you for considering my input on this matter.
