第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。
A
Escaping the crowds is all the more important this summer. We pick some of our favourite beaches for a day on the coast with the kids.
Earnse Bay, Cumbria
Few people come to Cumbria for its beaches, but west-facing, empty Earnse Bay on Walney Island (you’ll reach it across a bridge from Barrow-in-Furness)is perfect for a picnic. Views of the largest wind farm in Europe, the mountains of the Isle of Man and, on a clear day, Snowdonia, can be spectacular.
Blackgang Beach, Isle of Wight
Blackgang Beach is surely one of the least visited of all the island’s beaches and getting there’s as much fun as being there: you have to slide down a steep, sometimes slippery (but generally safe) path from Niton. The payoff is a glorious beach, overlooked by a magnificent sandstone cliff that looks like a vast slab (厚板) of honeycomb.
Chapman’s Pool, Dorset
Tucked away on Dorset’s Isle of Purbeck, Chapman’s Pool is far quieter than its better-known neighbour, Lulworth Cove. Its beauty is more than worth the modest effort needed to guide the footpath to the sand and storm. And as this is the Jurassic Coast, the kids will have every chance of finding shell fossils and small bits of Paleolithic reptiles.
Embleton Bay, Northumberland
Embleton Bay hides in plain sight behind the commanding Dunstan burgh Castle. Even on the sunniest day you can wander, fly a kite or watch seabirds with few concerrns about social distancing. The castle looks like something a six-year-old might draw, perched on a clift, with crumbling ramparts and a huge portcullis.
21. What do these beaches have in common
A. They all can provide a noise-free day. B. They all have cliffs and castles.
C. They are all suitable for camping. D. They are all perfect for picnics.
22. Which beach best suits bird-lovers
A. Earnse Bay. B. Chapman’s Pool. C. Embleton Bay. D. Blackgang Beach.
23. In which section of a newspaper does this text probably appear
A. Sports. B. Health. C. Culture. D. Travel.

In 1999, John Smyth, a high-school teacher decided it was time to retire. Together with his wife Helen, he set off on a journey around Australia. But when they returned, John found he missed the classroom, so he spent another eight years doing casual teaching.
Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students’ Education(VISE), which pairs up energetic people with educational experience, usually retired teachers, with children whose schooling is largely done remotely, because they live too far away from towns and cities to attend regular schools. John grew up in the country and as a kid in the bush, he always dreamed of running with circus(马戏团), but he didn’t even have much chance to see the circus in person. Therefore he was immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with Stardust Circus.
The lesson timetable was built around the kids performance schedules. “The eight-year-old I tutored was an awesome gymnast who was part of the teeterboard(跷跷板) act,” he explains. “A big guy would jump on the other side, he would swing up in the air, do a couple of twirls(旋转) and land on his uncle’s shoulders, and his uncle was standing on the boy’s father’s shoulders!”
The circus still includes some animal acts, including lions, monkeys, horses, goats and pigs. John and his wife Helen found it extraordinary enough to sink into sleep to the sound of lions roaring, but one day the lion-trainer, Matt, gave him a very special privilege, inviting him in to meet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary at first, for John it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th year.
24. What can we know about the children in the Stardust Circus
A. They missed the classroom.
B. They were lacking in regular schooling.
C. They were dreaming of travelling.
D. Most of them lived downtown.
25. What can we learn from the passage
A. John taught the gymnast to perform in the air.
B. Teachers of the program had a flexible schedule.
C. John’s dream came true as a volunteer in the circus.
D. The couple were fed up with(厌倦) the sound of lions roaring.
26. How did John probably feel after meeting the little lions
A. Excited. B. Scared. C. Calm. D. Regretful.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Enjoying Retirement B. Missing Regular School
C. Running with Circus D. Travelling with Animals

Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time Don’t keep your legs crossed.
Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis (麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle—what we know as that “pins and needles” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage.
So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.
28. What can we learn about crossing one’s legs
A. It can do harm to people’ s health.
B. It is a very bad social habit.
C. It is usually practiced deliberately.
D. It can make others feel uncomfortable.
29. According to the study, sitting with your legs crossed can______.
A. resist gravity effectively
B. lead to heart attacks easily
C. improve the function of legs
D. affect your blood pressure
30. In the third paragraph “pins and needles” probably means______.
A. serious muscle injuries
B. being a little nervous
C. being highly flexible
D. slight sharp pains
31.What is the main purpose of the text
A. To compare common habits.
B. To give readers some advice.
C. To introduce research methods.
D. To evaluate effects of an experiment.

We can text WhatsApp, Facebook message and Snapchat---but are we losing the convenience of the phone conversation Who has time to chat when you can spend hours on WhatsApp
Most of my phone calls are less than a minute long. If I unintentionally hit answer instead of pressing the ignore button, I usually say, “Hold on, I’ll call you back,” before quickly typing out a “what’s up ” text. My list of recent phone calls is limited to four people and unless we live together, are related, or dating, there’s very little chance that you’ll be added to that list.
It seems I’m not the only who’s abandoning the phone call. The average adult spends more time on media or communication per day than on sleeping, but among all that communication, the phone call is the medium that’s falling.
So why has the phone call fallen out of favor Many messaging apps seem to have created a grade of communication, so that the phone call is no longer the standard way of conversing long distance, but a relatively intimate(亲密的)thing.
Rachel, 24, says that she used to speak to all her girlfriends on the phone but now only calls a few. “I rarely even speak to good friends on the phone and if they call me like, ‘Hello, is something wrong ’,” says Rachel. “If I do a phone call it feels really official, like it’s a big deal.”
Instead of taking the time to ring a friend and catch up, it now seems easier to send a short message. And unless you’re very close to someone, an unscheduled phone call can feel like an intrusion (干扰). While text messages can be put to one side for hours or even days, a phone call demands attention in the moment.
But while text messages and emails may be a more efficient way of sharing basic facts and information, they’re not necessarily the best way of communication. We may be communicating more than ever before, but we seem to be listening far less.
32. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 1
A. People find no time to chat face-to-face.
B. People are addicted to messaging apps.
C. People chat much less on the phone now.
D. People have many ways to communicate.
33. According to Rachel, when a good friend calls her, she __________.
A. will ignore the call.
B. will call back immediately.
C. will think her friend has some problems.
D. will make an official visit to her friend.
34. What can be learned from the text
A. An unscheduled phone call may be unwelcome.
B. Text messages demand immediate attention.
C. Using a phone call to communicate is out of date.
D. It is hard to keep track of friends on messaging apps.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards phone conversation
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Hopeful.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea; the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year,I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn't break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, "This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up." When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens,I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn't break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.
