Some people believe that humans could live on the planet Mars by the year 2100. Our own planet, the Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted. It is hoped that people could start all over again and build a better world on Mars. Here is what life there could be like.
At present, our spacecraft are too slow to carry large numbers of passengers to Mars—it would take months. With the development of technology, by the year 2100, the journey might only take about 20 minutes in spacecraft that travel at the speed of light! However, the spacecraft would travel really fast, so the journey to Mars might be quite uncomfortable. Many people would feel ill.
Humans can’t live without water, air or food. So far, nobody knows whether there would be enough water or air on Mars for people. Moreover, scientists are not sure whether plants could grow on Mars. Food would most probably be in the form of pills (药片) and would not be so tasty.
Compared with life on the earth, life on Mars would be better in some ways. People would have more space. They might live in houses with huge comfortable rooms. Also, robots would do most of their work so that they could have more time to relax. There would probably be no schools on Mars. Every student would study at online schools with “e-teachers”.
Life on Mars would be interesting and challenging. However, it may take hundreds of years to make it true. So the most important thing we need to do now is to protect our beautiful blue planet—the Earth!

Have you ever imagined what life will be like in the future Here are some surprising statements from an international group of forty scientists. They said that in the near future, our lives would change beyond our wildest dreams.
Firstly, humans can grow body parts themselves. Dr. Ellen Heber-Katz is one of the forty scientists. He says, “People will think it common that sick organs (器官) can be repaired. It’s just like the way we repair a car.” Damaged parts will be taken away. Scientists could use human cells (细胞) to grow new organs. New technologies like this will also help people to live longer. Within forty years, most people will be able to live to be one hundred years old.
Secondly, the scientists have thought that a machine will be invented to “read” the minds of animals. In the future, we will be able to “talk” to animals. Scientists say that humans may first “talk” with mammals (哺乳动物)and then other vertebrates (脊椎动物) such as fish.
Our houses might also change beyond our imagination. Dr. Susan Greenfield says that when you enter the living room, sensors (传感器) will know you. They will turn on the lights. If you talk to the lights, they will change to the color of your choice.
But what would be the biggest breakthrough (突破) over the next forty years A number of scientists believe it would be the discovery of aliens. NASA scientist Chris Mckay says, “We may find aliens in space and talk with them.” He believes marks of alien life may even be found here on Earth.
What an amazing world it will be! Does life in the future sound cool to you Let’s wait and see what will really happen then!

On April 17, scientists announced the discovery of a set of coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in the waters of the Galápagos Islands. The reefs are in an area of the Galápagos Marine Reserve. They had been unexplored
before. 26
An international team of scientists made the discovery during an expedition in a deep-sea research ship. The reefs were noticed on top of an underwater volcano (火山). They’re about 400 meters below sea level and stretching for several miles. 27 The newly found reefs have more than 50% living coral. “They are moving in large numbers with life—pink octopus (章鱼), deep-sea fish, sharks and so on,” said Dr. Michelle Taylor.
28 After bad weather in the early 1980s killed many corals, scientists knew of only one surviving (幸存的) reef in the
Galápagos. 29
The researchers plan to continue exploring and studying the reefs. They said that it’s normal to find healthy coral reefs in the Galápagos Marine Reserve. 30 The discovery has raised hopes that coral reefs can still grow in Earth’s changing environment.
A.Experts guess that Earth has lost about half of its coral reefs since 1950.
B.In most reefs in shallow waters, about 10% to 20% of the coral is alive.
C.Ecuadorian officials said the new finding shows that more coral has survived.
