In the summer of 1969,six-year-old Mike Massimino watched wide-eyed on the television as Neil Armstrong took the first step on the moon.He immediately made his mom turn his elephant school play costume into that of an astronaut for Halloween.
As a child attracted by the universe,he dreamt of becoming an astronaut. But his wish caught up with him when he realized he didn't have the ideal skill set to make it as an astronaut:He was afraid of heights, had poor eyesight and couldn't swim.
Given all of Massimino's difficulty in qualifying as an astronaut,he worked for a different career. However, when the Challenger exploded,Massimino decided he wouldn't wait any longer to realize his dream.
NASA's elite program of astronauts introduces a new class every couple of years. If you don't make it,you won't be considered again until the next round.Massimino first applied(申请)to the program in 1989.Eight months later,he received his rejection(拒绝)letter in the mail.Unsurprised,he began carrying out space research, working toward his PhD in engineering at MIT.He applied again two years later for the 1992 astronaut class. He got rejected again.Years later, for the class of 1995,Massimino's application turned out unsuccessful. The interview was as tough as one would imagine.
Massimino failed because of something he could not change—not having 20/20vision(视力).He didn't stop there. After extensive research,he had vision training for nearly a year, having taken advice from others in the space science field, helping his eyes focus more clearly on objects(物体)in front of him.
Sending out his fourth application to NASA like a shot in the dark with a note from his eye doctor on his improvements,Massimino got a call. They would let him retake his eye test.He passed.

Mammoth Cave National Park,in the state of Kentucky,is a unique and historical natural wonder. It has the world's longest cave system. There may be another 600 miles of cave passageways that-have yet to be explored. In addition, more than 200 caves that are disconnected from the larger system can be found in the park.
The underground caves were created naturally by the process of limestone(石灰岩)erosion.Rain and rivers slowly dissolve(溶解)and shape soft limestone. The system is still being shaped today. Not only are they an amazing destination to visit, but the system also provides drinking water for about 40%of the US population.
The caves first explorers were Native Americans, who mined(采矿)the upper-levels of Mammoth Cave.Later, the sites were left in great shape and began to draw public interest.
Mammoth Cave was made into a national park thanks to strong support.Back in the1920s,the Southern Appalachian National Park Commission was set up in 1925.After years of work,as well as building roads and public facilities, the park was completed on July 1,1941.
The park now receives around 2 million visitors a year, with about a quarter taking at our of the caves—everything from a cultural tour to the more adventurous tours on offer. The cave supports more than 130 wildlife species(物种).The park is also much more than just a cave;the forest around has a diverse(多种多样的)range of species. There are miles of trails open for horseback riding, with canoe trails and great fishing spots. There are also more than 1,300 flowering species in the forest, and animals like wood warblers, thrushes, and bald eagles can regularly be seen.

Today, there are more humans on Earth than ever and nature is in free fall.In just 50years,wildlife populations have dropped on average by 69 percent. In the same period, our population has doubled, and demand for non-living and living material from Earth has grown six times. The biggest contributors to biodiversity(生物多样性)loss are habitat destruction and over-development of species, both driven by completely unsustainable consumption(不可持续的消耗)and caused by increasing human numbers. It is important that we address this over-consumption,and that means thinking seriously the influence our species' population growth is having on the breakdown of the natural world.
December's biodiversity summit(峰会)in Canada didn't meet the challenges we face.Only two of the 23 topics are intended to address consumption and speak of “greatly reducing over consumption".But the message is unclearly defined and unquantified(未被量化的),short of necessary facts for any real application.Given all the goals of the former biodiversity protection plan were missed,it is truly impossible to imagine that governments will gather the bravery to catch the chance.
In November last year, our population reached 8 billion and there are predictions that it will reach 10.4 billion in the 2080s.The goal of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity is for us to live“in harmony(和谐)with nature”by 2050.Let me make it clear:there is no doubt that the 1.7 billion more people predicted will make this greatly harder to achieve. However much we try to reduce our consumption and our influence, every plan and rule that moves us forward will have a gradually lower influence.
And let me say it again:it isn't about any particular humans among those billions, this is about us as a species of resource-consuming organism.
We must now ensure governments deal with their tasks with great efforts instead of any short-sighted,short-term solutions.Tolerating(忍受)the cruel idea that economic grow this the answer to our problems, and totally ignoring unsustainable population growth, must end.Or we all die.
32.What's the function for the first paragraph
A.To conduct a survey.
C.To introduce the topic
D.To discuss a problem.
B.To explore the reason.
33.What can we learn from the summit in Canada
A.It is far from contenting the author.
B.It has pointed the way to our future.
C.It clears up many people's confusion.
D.It helps deal with the consumption issues.
34.How does the author present his idea in paragraph 32
A.By giving examples.
C.By making comparisons.
B.By showing data.
D.By defining concept.
35.The author advises us to
A.Tolerate existing issues and wait.
B.Put population growth in second place.
C.Expect economic growth to solve the problem.
D.Let governments adopt effective solutions wisely.

It was a warm Sunday.16-year-old Stella settled down with a book, enjoying her quiet moment when her friend Bog came over with his 6-year-old sister.“Stella, please!I need you to help to watch Hazel!I have a lecture to attend this afternoon,"Bog begged.
Stella frowned, not thrilled with the idea of babysitting a little girl. However,Bog didn't offer her any other choice. He dropped Hazel off with Stella and quickly ran away before she could react.
With a heavy sigh,Stella unwillingly turned her attention to Hazel.“Fine, just stay there and don't cause any trouble,"she grumbled(嘟囔).To her surprise, little Hazel smiled and obediently sat by the table, drawing quietly without making a single noise.
For the next hour,Stella was quietly engaged in reading without being disturbed by Hazel.Gradually, her annoyance disappeared and she got accustomed to the company of Hazel. After a while,Hazel cautiously approached Stella, holding a picture.“Look,it's you and me."she said in a low voice. It was a simple drawing of two girls, hand in hand, smiling.
Stella's heart softened as she looked at the drawing. She felt guilty about treating Hazel impatiently.Setting her book aside,Stella smiled warmly and said,“I love it.Thank you!”Then Stella began to join Hazel to create it together.
Just as they were lost in a world of colors,a sudden phone ringing broke the warm atmosphere. It was a phone call from her friend, reminding her about the long-awaited plan to go skating on the ice rink(溜冰场).Stella's heart sank because she had forgotten all about it.She was torn between the desire to go skating and her duty to look after Hazel. She was also worried that taking her to skate would prevent her from enjoying gliding(滑)freely on the ice.
