The year was 1937. I was seven years old. And I was with my father and mother, at a Chinese restaurant in Boro Park, Brooklyn. That was the first Chinese restaurant I ever ate at. I was always given food from the adults’ orders.
I’m not sure when it was, but the time did come when I had my first order — Won-Ton soup, egg rolls and spare ribs. That made me excited. My father seemed to know the Chinese waiter, a young guy; his name was Jimmy. I remember being surprised that a Chinese man could have an American name.
Some months later, my father took me to a restaurant in Manhattan’s Chinatown called The Rathskeller on Mott Street. This was my first time in Chinatown and I was very impressed by how different it was from Boro Park. We went there a few times. I just couldn’t have enough of the food there.
In 1951, I was sent to work in the Hospital Treasurer’s Office at Letterman Army Hospital. A colleague had an uncle who was a waiter at The Far East Cafe on Grant Avenue in the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Once a week, a group from the office would go there for lunch and my colleague’s uncle would take good care of us. My favorite dish was Tomato Beef Chow Mein.
It wasn’t until about 23 years later, in 1974, that I had my next serious relationship with the cuisine (菜肴) of China. I was lucky to take some cooking lessons provided by a famous Chinese restaurant’s chef. Then my life entered a new phase (阶段). I didn’t know it then, but some time later, it became clear to me that Chinese food would follow me through the days of my life.

C. He was allowed to order his own food.
D. He became familiar with the Chinese waiter.
5. What did the author most probably think of The Rathskeller
A. The food there suited his taste.
B. It provided quality customer service.
C. The environment there was pleasant.
D. It offered a chance to learn foreign cultures.
6. What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph
A. He knew Chinese table manners well.
B. Chinese food had a lasting influence on him.
C. He formed a close friendship with a chef.
D. A famous chef helped him run a Chinese restaurant.
7. How is the text mainly developed
A. By using data. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By making comparisons. D. By following the order of time.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. D

Why do you like the music you do You would think that it is because of the music itself. But that’s only half the story. Surprisingly, the other half of the story doesn’t have much to do with music at all. By analyzing the public personalities (个性) of famous musicians, and the personality traits of their fans, a group of researchers found that people prefer the music of artists whose public personalities are similar to their own.
In three separate studies of more than 80,000 people, the researchers looked at several factors: personality ratings of 50 of the most famous musicians, listener reactions to music, and the lyrics in the artists’ music. The musicians studied were different, ranging from Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Whitney Houston, The Rolling Stones to Beyonce, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, and Ozzy Osbourne.
The results from the three studies show that the fit in personality between the listener and the musician predicts musical preferences. It’s important to note that the public personalities of the musicians were measured, not their real personalities. The findings show how music gives fans a sense of pride and belonging to a social world. Even more, the results shed light on the evolutionary (进化的) origins of music, which say that music evolved as a way to communicate groups’ characteristics which helped groups decide whether or not to work with each other. All of those make the findings a major advance in this area of research.
The findings are showing us how music can be a common denominator to bring people together. They can also pave the way for a new approach for record companies to attract audiences. Besides, the findings can be applied to situations involving mental health. For example, in times of stress and uncertainty, listeners can seek music of artists with similar personalities to themselves and feel understood and a sense of connection.
8. What are the key factors that influence listeners’ preference according to the researchers
A. The lyrics in the music. B. The styles of the music.
C The listeners’ former experiences. D. The musicians’ public personalities.
9. Why does the writer consider the findings a major advance
A. They have shown the social power of music.
B. They can make people improve their personalities.
C. They encourage musicians to produce better music.
D. They can help listeners develop better taste in music.
10. How can you understand the underlined part in the last paragraph
A. A secret. B. A purpose. C. A similarity. D. A skill.
11. In which section of a magazine may we read the text
A. Health. B. Culture. C. Education. D. Relationship.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

As online learning becomes more common and a mass of resources are changed to digital form, some people have suggested that public libraries should be shut down and everyone should be given an iPad with an e-reader subscription (订阅). They believe that it will save local cities and towns money, provide more materials and encourage more people to read.
However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets (平板电脑). First, digital books and resources are related to less learning and more problems than print resources. A study found that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, keep 20% less information, and understand 10% less of what they read. Additionally, staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause more health problems than reading print does.
Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded to believe that the only service libraries offer is book lending. Libraries have lots of benefits, and many are only available if the library has a physical location. Some of these benefits include acting as a quiet study space, giving people a way to communicate with their neighbors, holding classes on a variety of topics, providing jobs, answering visitor questions, and keeping the community connected. One neighborhood found that, over a third of residents reported feeling more connected to their community after a series of local library instituted community events. Similarly, a survey conducted in 2015 found that nearly two-thirds of American adults feel that closing their local library would have a major effect on their community.
While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would encourage people to spend even more time looking at digital screens and end access to many of the benefits of libraries. In many areas, libraries are such an important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a simple object.
12. Which of the following may digital reading supporters agree
A. Libraries cost towns or cities too much money.
B. IPads make people’s learning less convenient.
C. Printed books are more efficient than digital ones.
D. Digital books offer more answers than libraries.
13. How does the writer explain learning problems caused by digital books
A. By telling a story. B. By using some data.
C. By describing a scene. D. By doing an experiment.
14. Why do people prefer physical libraries
A. They can read more books there. B. They can have a personal space for study.
C. They can take some exercises in them. D. They can feel closer to their neighbors.
15. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To inform the residents of activities held in libraries.
B. To advertise an effective way to subscribe to e-reader.
C. To argue that libraries shouldn’t be replaced by tablets.
D. To present the reasons of not using tablets in libraries.
【答案】12 A 13. B 14. D 15. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了公共图书馆不应该被平板电脑所代替,并给出了理由。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“some people have suggested that public libraries should be shut down and everyone should be given an iPad with an e-reader subscription (订阅). They believe that it will save local cities and towns money, provide more materials and encourage more people to read.(一些人建议关闭公共图书馆,给每个人发一个订阅电子阅读器的iPad。他们认为,这将节省当地城镇的资金,提供更多的材料,并鼓励更多的人阅读)”可知,数字阅读的支持者认为关闭图书馆可以节省资金,故他们可能会同意A项“图书馆花费了城镇或城市太多的钱”的观点。故选A。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。第二段中“First, digital books and resources are related to less learning and more problems than print resources.(首先,与印刷资源相比,数字图书和资源涉及的学习更少,问题更多)”提到数字图书会引起更多学习问题,接着下文“A study found that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, keep 20% less information, and understand 10% less of what they read.(一项研究发现,人们在平板电脑上阅读的速度要慢20-30%,保留的信息少20%,理解的内容也少10%)”使用一些研究中的数据来说明,故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Some of these benefits include acting as a quiet study space, giving people a way to communicate with their neighbors, holding classes on a variety of topics, providing jobs, answering visitor questions, and keeping the community connected. One neighborhood found that, over a third of residents reported feeling more connected to their community after a series of local library instituted community events.(其中一些好处包括作为一个安静的学习空间,给人们一个与邻居交流的方式,举办各种主题的课程,提供工作,回答游客的问题,并保持社区的联系。一个社区发现,超过三分之一的居民报告说,在一系列当地图书馆组织的社区活动之后,他们与社区的联系更加紧密了)”可知,人们更喜欢实体图书馆是因为图书馆让他们和社区的联系更加紧密,他们会觉得和邻居更亲近,故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据全文内容,结合最后一段中“In many areas, libraries are such an important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a simple object.(在许多地区,图书馆是社区网络的重要组成部分,它们永远不会被一个简单的物体所取代)”可知,文章主要论述了公共图书馆不应该被平板电脑所代替,并给出了理由,故本文目的是论证图书馆不应该被平板电脑所代替,故选C。

D. A famous chef helped him run a Chinese restaurant.
7. How is the text mainly developed
A. By using data. B. By analyzing causes.

C. The listeners’ former experiences. D. The musicians’ public personalities.
9. Why does the writer consider the findings a major advance
A They have shown the social power of music.
A Health. B. Culture. C. Education. D. Relationship.
D
