Contemporary artist Nick Smith creates pixelated(像素化的) works with hand colour-chips, synonymous with colour swatches(色块), cleverly combining text and im create interesting and fascinating collaged (拼贴的) works.
With a previous career in Interior Design spanning 11 years, Nick references his concept design background throughout his work, reworking the design aesthetic using unique colours watches in hand-made collages, placing his work firmly in the fine art category. From his first collage experiment back in 2011 of Warhol's 'Marilyn’, when he assembled a tessellation(镶嵌技术) of swatches as a challenge, this eventually inspired his career as an artist and determined his unique style he is now known for.
The multi-layered element of his work, which marries image and word, allows Nick to explore complex art-historical concepts. The text employed is often narrative, which can be read in sequence adding another element of intrigue and interest to the work. This additional element of text, placed under the empty space of each swatch, creates either complimentary or subversive meanings. Nick deliberately leaves these word/image constructions open to viewer interpretation, sparking new debates and meanings.
Each P-series, such as Psycolourgy 2015, Purgatory 2019, explores complicatedly researched concepts, which are always the crucial starting point for each new series of work.Producing large-scale works to micro-chip collages, and multiple sell out print editions, Nick continues to develop his popular and recognisable art.

A sell out show, with numerous successful subsequent print releases, Psycolourgy forged Smith's path to a place among Britain's notable contemporary artists.
PURGATORY--December 2019 Context,Art Miami
Purgatory is a shiny , sticky, glossy exploration of our societies attitude and approach to our excess, addictions and desires.
Excerpts from Dante's Purgatory are woven through colourful works depicting popular covetable consumables, creating symbolic representations of the seven sins. If a single word can describe our daily life during those first three years, it is "scrounge"(讨要)Every waking moment we were concentrating on how the hell we would be able to save up enough dough(面团;钱)to do whatever it was we had to do. Usually it was just break even. And there's nothing romantic about it. either. Remember the famous stanza n Omar Khayyám You know, the book of verses underneath the bough, the loaf of bread, the jug of wine and so forth Substitute Scott on Trusts for that book of verses and see how this poetic vision stacks up against my idyllic existence. Ah, paradise No, bullshit. All I'd think about is how much that book was (could we get it secondhand ) and where, if anywhere, we might be able to charge that bread and wine. And then how we might ultimately scrounge up the dough to pay off our debts.
Life changes. Even the simplest decision mast be scrutinized by the ever vigilant budget committee of your mind.

I called it North Cambridge, although the address was technically in the town of Somerville and the house was, as Jenny described it,“in the state of disrepair”. A Swedish Professor at Natural History came out to the farm to ask me for help. He had come to Africa to find out at what stage of the embryo( 胎) state the foot of the monkeys begins to differ from the human foot. For this purpose he meant to go and shoot Colobus monkeys on Mount Elgon.
“You will never find out from the Colobus monkeys,"I said to him, "they live in the tops of the trees and are shy and difficult to shoot. It would be the greatest luck should you get the embryo you want.”
The Professor was hopeful. He was going to stay out till he had got his foot, he said, even if it was before years. He had applied to the Game Department for permission to shoot the monkeys he wanted. The permission he was, in view of the high scientific object of his research, certain to get, but so far, he had had no reply.

Among all the different types of journey that people undertake there are also those of a spiritual nature. Some of the trips we do in our lives are purely for pleasure, some are meant to make us stronger, sometimes we travel to explore and learn , and in all of these undertakings we grow and become wiser.
There is a lot we can learn from the land that surrounds us and the best way to acquire that knowledge is by traveling and experiencing. This ancient aboriginal initiation ritual involves exactly this: a long spiritual hike across the indigenous land. Although widely known as “Walkabout ,” in later years the ritual has been referred to as “temporary mobility , " because the former is often used as a derogatory term in Australian culture.
A young man on Walkabout
Historically speaking, the walkabout is a rite of passage in which young ( adolescent )Aboriginal Australians undertake a journey that will help “ transform them into adults. The journey is usually made between the ages of 10 and 16. During this journey which can last for up to six months , the individual is required to live and survive all alone in the wilderness.
This is not an easy thing to do, especially not for teenagers. That is why only those who have proven themselves mentally and physically ready are allowed to proceed with the walkabout. Only the elders of the group decide whether it is time or not for the child to do it.The children are not completely unprepared for the journey. During the years before the walkabout, the elders instruct them and give them advice about the ceremony and adult life in general; they have been passed the “ secrets” of the tribe , the knowledge about their world.
Aboriginal woman
Those who are initiated in the walkabout are also decorated with body paint and ornaments.Sometimes they are marked with a permanent symbol on their bodies, In some cases, a tooth is removed from the mouth , or the nose or ears of the initiated are pierced. Traditional walkabout clothes include only a simple loin cloth and nothing more.
During a walkabout, a young person can sometimes travel a distance of over a l,000miles. In order to survive this long hike , the participant in the walkabout must be able to make their own shelter and must be capable of procuring food and water for themselves. That means he needs to hunt, catch fish, and also recognize and utilize edible and healing plants, The initiated youngster must learn to identify plants such as bush tomatoes, IIIawarra plums, quandongs , lilly-pillies , Muntari berries, wattle seeds, Kakadu plums, and bunya nuts.
56. What can be referred from the first two paragraphs of the passage

James Cameron, writer-director-producer of best picture Oscar winner "Titanic” (1997), has again denied a claim perennially put forth by fans: that there was room for Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) to climb aboard the floating door holding Rose (Kate Winslet) and avoid death by hypothermia (低体温) following the shipwreck in the North Atlantic.
Stating that "it says on page 147 [of the script] that Jack dies," Cameron, 63, told Vanity Fair, "Obviously it was an artistic choice, [that] the thing was just big enough to hold her, and not big enough to hold him”. Finding it “silly, really, that we’re having this discussion 20 years later.” the filmmaker pointed out that, "Had he lived, the ending of the film would have been meaningless... So whether it was that, or whether a smokestack fell on him, he was going down."
He added he believed the physics were correct as well. “I was in the water with the piece of wood putting people on it for about two days getting it exactly buoyant (漂浮) enough so that it would support one person with full free-board, meaning that she wasn't immersed at all in the 28 degree water, so that she could survive the three hours it took until the rescue ship got there... And we very, very finely tuned it to be exactly what you see in the movie because I believed at the time, and still do, that that’s what it would have taken for one person to survive.”
Winslet and fellow "Titanic" star Kathy Bates suggest otherwise, with Bates at the SAG AFTRA Foundation 2nd Annual Patron of the Artists Awards on Nov. 9 introducing Winslet by saying, "He lets go of her hand and sinks into the depth of the Atlantic. And I personally think that there was plenty of room on there!" Winslet agreed, telling the audience lightheartedly, "He could have fit on it! He could have fit on that door!” She similarly said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in February 2016 that Jack “could have actually fitted on that bit of door”
As far back as 2012, Cameron toldIGN.com, "It's not a question of room, it’s a question of buoyancy... It's clear that there’s really only enough buoyancy available for one person... She's completely out of the water on the raft, and ... if he got on with her, they'd both be half in and half out of the water ... and they would have both died of hypothermia.
As well, he had told The Daily Beast in January, "You read page 147 of the script and it says, "Jack gets off the board and gives his place to her so that she can survive” It's that simple”
Referring to a 2012 episode of Discovery’s "MythBusters" in which he gamely guest-starred, Cameron told the website, "You’re Jack, you're in water that’s 28 degrees, your brain is starting to get hypothermia. ‘MythBusters’ asks you to now go take off your life vest, take hers off, swim underneath this thing, attach it in some way that it won't just wash out two minutes later - which means you're underwater tying this thing on in 28-degree water, and that’s going to take you five to 10 minutes, so by the time you come back up you're already dead. So that wouldn't work. His best choice was to keep his upper body out of the water and hope to get pulled out by a boat or something before he died.”
56. What question have the fans raised about the plot of the Titanic
A. They think the ending of the story was not good enough.
B. They question the director’s level of direction.
C. They oppose the separation of the hero and heroine.
D. They believe that the hero has a chance of survival as well.
57. According to James Cameron, Jack should have been dead because ________.
A. it comes up to the fans’ expectations
B. the process the screenplay can be satisfied
C. the true story that attracts more fans
D. the core role of the film is the actress not the actor
58. Which of the following people hold(s) a different viewpoint of Jack’s life
A. Kathy Bates B. Winslet C. James Cameron D. The fans
59. According to the passage, which of the following is incorrect
A. According to the director, the hero is dead on page 147 of the script.
B. If the hero were still alive, the ending of the movie would be meaningless.
C. James Cameron attended the Foundation 2nd Annual Patron of the Artists Awards.
D. Some fans don’t want to believe that the hero is dead in the movie.

When I was in high school, I wanted to attend an Ivy League university on the East Coast. I had the grades and SAT scores to get into Harvard but my father refused to pay even though tuition back then was much more affordable than it is today, well within the means of our family. I went to UCLA instead, a good university but not an Ivy. I worked at least 20 hours per week throughout my four years and have always felt that I missed out on a lot of college. I feel that I didn’t have enough time to devote to my studies. One of my biggest regrets is not having had the kind of immersion experience that my oldest son enjoyed. I envy him, but it’s not a bitter feeling. It doesn’t make me lose sight of my own accomplishments and the very real goodness in my life so far.
I believe my own father envied me, too. Early in high school, he had to drop out and help support his family during the Depression. Although he never said as much, I know he wished he could have finished high school and gone on to higher education. I was the only one of his children to do so. When I earned my doctorate and built a life as a professional, he felt a mixture of pride, vicarious fulfillment and envy.
I graduated first in my high school class. Years later, I learned that for months after, Dad had carried the little slip announcing my class rank in his pocket, showing it to friends and business associates. He was obviously proud, though he never told me so. It strikes me as a narcissistic sort of pride, about him rather than me. Many of you will relate to this experience. In your comments to my posts, you’ve told me about parents who exploited you for narcissistic gain. I don’t think my father was a bad man, or that his experience of pride was particularly unusual. Don’t most parents like to brag about their child’s success because it reflects well upon them When I speak of my sons’ lives, I feel pride in them as well as myself.
Envy gets a bad rap but there’s nothing unusual about it. Envy, as I’ve said before, can teach you what you want. Problems only arise when it links up with shame, as I’ve written about before. When the success/beauty/youth enjoyed by someone else makes us feel like a loser in comparison, our envy may become poisonous. In the illogical unconscious, we may feel as if it is precisely because the other person has the trait or thing we want that we cannot have it. We may feel that the only possible relief would be to destroy the object of our envy.
56. According to the text, the author envies his son because ________.
A. his son possesses the precious years of youth
B. his son has a perfect and impressive childhood
C. his son gets into Harvard successfully
D. his son has the immersion experience on his study
57. It can be learned that most parents are proud of their children because ________.
A. they want to exploit their children for narcissistic gain
B. they regard the success as their own and also feel pride in themselves
C. they like to brag about their child’s success
D. they want to catch their friends’ attention
58. Which of the following is TRUE of this passage
A. The author studied in an Ivy League university on the East Coast.
B. The author’s son completed author’s unfinished studies.
C. Problems only arise when envy links up with shame.
D. The author’s father didn’t care about his study and dropped out.
59. What is the author’s attitude toward envy
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Skeptical. D. Indifferent.

All I had to do for the two dollars was clean her house for a few hours after school. It was a beautiful house, too, with a plastic-covered sofa and chairs, wall-to-wall blue-and-white carpeting, a white enamel stove, a washing machine and a dryer — things that were common in her neighborhood, absent in mine. In the middle of the war, she had butter, sugar, steaks, and seam-up-the-back stockings.
I knew how to scrub floors on my knees and how to wash clothes in our zinc tub, but I had never seen a Hoover vacuum cleaner or an iron that wasn't heated by fire.
Part of my pride in working for her was earning money I could squander (浪费) : on movies, candy, paddleballs, jacks, ice-cream cones. But a larger part of my pride was based on the fact that I gave half my wages to my mother, which meant that some of my earnings were used for real things — an insurance-policy payment or what was owed to the milkman or the iceman. The pleasure of being necessary to my parents was profound. I was not like the children in folktales: burdensome mouths to feed, nuisances to be corrected, problems so severe that they were abandoned to the forest. I had a status that doing routine chores in my house did not provide — and it earned me a slow smile, an approving nod from an adult. Confirmations that I was adultlike, not childlike.
In those days, the forties, children were not just loved or liked; they were needed. They could earn money; they could care for children younger than themselves; they could work the farm, take care of the herd, run errands(差事), and much more. I suspect that children aren't needed in that way now. They are loved, doted on, protected, and helped. Fine, and yet...
Little by little, I got better at cleaning her house — good enough to be given more to do, much more. I was ordered to carry bookcases upstairs and, once, to move a piano from one side of a room to the other. I fell carrying the bookcases. And after pushing the piano my arms and legs hurt so badly. I wanted to refuse, or at least to complain, but I was afraid she would fire me, and I would lose the freedom the dollar gave me, as well as the standing I had at home — although both were slowly being eroded. She began to offer me her clothes, for a price. Impressed by these worn things, which looked simply gorgeous to a little girl who had only two dresses to wear to school, I bought a few. Until my mother asked me if I really wanted to work for castoffs. So I learned to say "No, thank you" to a faded sweater offered for a quarter of a week's pay.
Still, I had trouble summoning (鼓起) the courage to discuss or object to the increasing demands she made. And I knew that if I told my mother how unhappy I was she would tell me to quit. Then one day, alone in the kitchen with my father, I let drop a few whines about the job. I gave him details, examples of what troubled me, yet although he listened intently, I saw no sympathy in his eyes. No "Oh, you poor little thing. " Perhaps he understood that what I wanted was a solution to the job, not an escape from it. In any case, he put down his cup of coffee and said, “Listen. You don't live there. You live here. With your people. Go to work. Get your money. And come on home."
That was what he said. This was what I heard:
Whatever the work is, do it well — not for the boss but for yourself.
You make the job; it doesn't make you.
Your real life is with us, your family.
You are not the work you do; you are the person you are.
I have worked for all sorts of people since then, geniuses and morons, quick-witted and dull, big-hearted and narrow. I've had many kinds of jobs, but since that conversation with my father I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself, and I have never placed the security of a job above the value of home.

I believe that, as a doctor, I should always get a blanket for my patients who need one. Yes I know there are other people who can do this. I can ask a nurse or an orderly to do it, but I believe that I should do it. So several times a day, while working in our emergency department, I leave my patient's bedside, get them a nice warm blanket and cover them up, before continuing on my day.
This action goes along with what I believe to be the three rules of emergency medicine (and perhaps medicine in general). I repeat these often to the residents and medical students I supervise in our busy urban emergency department.
I tell them: (1) we make people feel better; (2) we try to make sure nothing really bad is happening to them right now; and (3)we try to tell them what is causing their symptoms. I say that we can almost always achieve the first two rules but not always the third. No news is usually good news from an ER doctor. If I find a reason for, say, your abdominal pain it is rarely a good thing.
Which brings me back to why I believe I should offer to bring my patients a blanket. To me it is the first step in communicating to the person that my priority is his or her comfort, both physical and emotional. It is a simple act that acknowledges my desire to meet their basic needs as a patient. It may be an overused expression but I want to treat my patients the way I would want my family members taken care of. This behavior was also modeled for me when I was a patient.Shortly after college I was involved in a serious accident while working in an ambulance as a volunteer. The short story s that broke my femur(大腿骨), the large bone in my thigh, and my recovery required a total of four surgeries over a year or so. The surgeon who performed the last three operations usually did his rounds late at night.
He was a brilliant and talented surgeon who reminded me in appearance of a chain-smoking Einstein. He would ask about my pain and my mental state, but what I remember most is his offering to bring me French fries the next time he visited. I felt that he cared about me and, more importantly, understood what I was going through. He connected with me, and I trusted and obeyed everything he told me to do.Getting a blanket and placing it on my patient is, in the end, a check and balance for me. I have the power to order hundreds of tests and treatments. I strive to always be right (or at least never wrong). And on not so rare occasions, I help save a life. But in the end, if I have not made that connection with my patient, if I have not shown them I understand their needs, then I have failed them as a physician and as a person.
56. According to the author, what does the performance of giving blankets to patients mean
A. It may be an overused expression although he doesn't care about it.

58. What does the last sentence (paragraph7) imply
A. The author felt regretful for not preparing blankets for their patients.
B. The only principle of a good physician is to understand patients' needs.
C. It important for doctors to convey the cause of their illness clearly.
D.A good physician should show his care to his patients.

Apparently, the idea of money that's not tied to a specific bank — or a specific country — is appealing to many. But it's worth remembering that the banking system that we now all live with is just that: A modern invention. Not so long ago, money was almost always created and used locally, and bartering was common. (In fact, it still is common among many online local networks, like the Buy Nothing Project.).
In the past, money's makeup varied from place to place, depending on what was considered valuable there. So while some of the world's first coins were made from a naturally occurring hybrid of gold and silver called electrum, objects other than coins have served as currency, including beads, ivory, livestock, and cowrie shells. In West Africa, bracelets of bronze or copper were used as cash, especially if the transaction was associated with the slave trade there. Throughout the colonial period, tobacco was used in lieu of coins or paper bills in Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina, even though it was used elsewhere in the colonies and extensively throughout Europe and the U.K.
Today, on an island in the Pacific, a specific type of shell still serves as currency — and some people there are even hoarding it, just like Bitcoin moguls, convinced that one day, it will make them wealthy beyond imagination.
On Malaita, the most-populated island that's part of the Solomon Islands, shells are accepted at most places in exchange for goods.
"How much tuna you can get for your shells depends on their color and shape," Mary Bruno, a shop owner from the small town of Auki, on Malaita, told Vice. "One strip of darker shells might get you about two cans of smaller tuna, but the red ones are worth more. For the red ones, one strip might get enough tuna to feed a big family for a long time."
Just like a mint that creates coins, there's only one place on the island where the shells, which are polished and strung together to form 3-foot-long ropes, are made. (You can see how that works in the video above.) The strips of red, white, and black shells all come from Langa Langa Lagoon, where artificial islands were long-ago built by locals to escape from the island-dwelling cannibals. Once marooned out on their islands, locals needed a currency to use among themselves, and so the shell currency was born.
Using shells for money was common throughout the Pacific islands as late as the early 1900s, but Malaita is unique in that they are still used today. And just like cryptocurrencies, there are those who think the islanders are smart to invest in this type of money, which is reported to have risen in value over the last three decades. It might seem strange to hoard a bunch of processed, strung-together shells, but what is a pile of dollars Just a specially printed piece of paper and hemp that we've assigned value to — and probably less durable over time than those shells.

We Have a Painter to Thank for Yellowstone
Before artist Thomas Moran set foot in the park, it was seen as a hellish place. After, it was marketed as a wonderland.
Before Thomas Moran arrived, Yellowstone in the popular imagination was a harsh, wild place pocked with hellish geysers. After the painter’s work was finished, Yellowstone was established as a national park and marketed as a wonderland.
In 1871 Moran and photographer William Henry Jackson had joined the first U.S. government survey of the region. For two weeks Moran filled a sketchbook with the landscape’s most stunning sights. The survey results, Jackson’s photos, and Moran’s watercolors—the first color renderings of the area—were presented to Congress that fall. “The photographs were proof that what the artist was showing really existed,” says Eleanor Harvey, senior curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
In March 1872 lawmakers officially made Yellowstone a national park, the world’s first. By April, Moran had transformed some of his sketches into a 7-by-12-foot painting. The gold-splattered valley and billowing Lower Falls of “The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone” captivated the public. “It is too grand and wonderful for words,” declared the Ladies’ Repository that August, “and none can ever judge of its wonders from any engraving or photograph in mere black and white.”
Though Moran later painted Lake Superior, the Grand Canyon, and the Rockies, his reputation was so intertwined with Yellowstone that he took to signing his paintings “TYM,” for Thomas “Yellowstone” Moran.

The adaptation of books to the big screen is nothing new to our society. Books have become well-respected tools for creating a better Hollywood. However, films should be just as respected for their ability to create better writers.
The main skill films help writers develop is attention to progress. Most directors and screenwriters know that the majority of people are not willing to sit through a five-hour film. Thus, every scene must have a purpose. This is a vital objective to keep in mind when writing a novel or short story. With most writing courses placing emphasis on literary techniques, it is easy to become more invested in diction than with actually moving the plot forward. Films remind the writer that while a novel ought to have some degree of literary complexity, the goal at the end of each chapter, page, or sentence is simple:keep the story moving. Films not only help writers develop a plot, but also help writers develop specific moments within their stories. Although writing a means of expression, not all things are easy to express in writing, especially facial expressions and emotions. Films allow writers to study the bodily and emotional actions that make characters read more realistically and make stories more tempting.
Lastly, sometimes it takes a film to bring about a story idea in the first place. Stop using a horribly specific or extremely uninteresting prompt. A pleasing theme or aesthetic can be enough to inspire a character or setting. As writers , whether fiction or independent, our works often arise from the things we see around us or the thins we wish we could see. Nonetheless, our works also arise from the visuals that have been created for us. As literature continues to enter the film industry, perhaps we should make use of film techniques in our literature.
56. Reminded by films, a writer can move the plot forward by________________ .
A. keeping in mind that every word should mean something.
B. providing a description of as many details as possible.
C. paying attention to further enhancing literary complexity.

D. bringing in inspiration for new works.
58. The word “prompt”(paragraph 3) probably means _______________ .
A. a reason to write.

D. an element to attract relationship.
59. Which of the following statements best represents the author’s thoughts in this passage

What happens in a particular class on a particular day depends on the interactions that occur between the teacher, the students, and the material being studied. The classroom context, generally speaking, includes all those factors that influence what happens during teaching and learning. These factors operate on different levels.
The physical context, for example, influences what happens in the classroom. Space may restrict participation, depending on how a teacher interprets the situation, some teachers use their surroundings to promote learning. Notice boards reflect themes or topics being studied; a display area presents students’ written work for others to read. Of course, some teachers remain unaware of the physical environment of the classroom affects the nature and types of interactions that they and their students inhabit together. A room, after all, is just a room.Yet the physical environment of the classroom affects the nature and types of interactions that will occur. Straight rows of tables, for example, are favourable to classroom lectures and turn-taking routines in which students, one by one, recite answers to a teacher's questions.
A room isn’t just a room for teachers who seek to make the physical environment suitable for interactive learning. Interactive learning invites thinking, reading, writing, speaking, listening and sharing. Such classrooms are arranged for individuals rather than for the “class” as a whole; they welcome students as active participants. Various physical arrangements encourage interactive learning, but they depend on the size of the room and the furniture that is available.
A class can be organized for individual, group, or whole-class activities. Students are initially assigned seats at a combination of small and large tables. However, when the students work individually or in groups, they are free to abandon the assigned seating. The chalkboard occupies a central position in the room to accommodate whole-class study.
56. According to the passage, “the physical context” (paragraph 2) may include_______.
A. teachers' roles
B. themes being studied
C. a display area
D. students’ participation
Which of the following is the most suitable for a classroom lecture
A. B.
Chair
C. D.

58. From the last paragraph,we can learn that_________________.
A.classrooms should be arranged for the class as a whole
B.the chalkboard should be abandoned during group work
C.seating can be changed for different classroom activities
D.interaction can be encouraged by combining small and large tables
59. What is the passage mainly about
A. The physical classroom environment varies with different types of interactions.
B. The physical environment is a deciding factor for a successful lesson.
C. Interactive learning depends on individuals’ active involvement.
D. Group work has become a trend in classroom teaching.

(2023·上海浦东新·统考三模)Dear Doggy Diary
MONDAY
Now we’ve surely got all we require for the puppy’s arrival: a basket, a screaming toy banana and a bag of dog food. For names, we are hesitating between Spike or Lenny—but, as I tell this list to a Black friend, I suddenly realize both names are associated with famous Black men, and panic that this is a little offence.
TUESDAY
Our friend Sam has kindly volunteered to “puppy proof” our home. “You don’t want to give him that screaming toy, that’s encouraging him to eat your sofa,” she says, inspecting our purchases disapprovingly. She hands us a book, by Dr Ian Dunbar. “This guy”, she assures us, “is a Super Babysitter for dogs.”
WEDNESDAY
Spent last night ______57______ Dunbar has plenty of wisdom on “positively communicating” with the puppy, but nothing on how to get a puppy and also two young children.
THURSDAY
D-Day. Now the registration website wants a dog name at short notice. So, we go for “Buzz”. One syllable (音节) and with multi-generational fascination (Granny thinks Aldrin, kids think Lightyear).
FRIDAY
I feel very hesitant about saying so, but last night went well. Buzz is incredibly cute, the kids adore him and he’s very cute and only did one pee (排尿) on the blanket, and did I mention he’s cute
SATURDAY
“Love” feels like a stretch right now. Our “play” was evidently not “focused” enough to prevent Buzz biting through our sofa. Also, our three-year-old thinks it’s funny to run away, so Buzz wrestles him to the ground and licks all over his face. I suspect this isn’t the best way to prepare Buzz for engaging with the public.
SUNDAY
The whole house smells of dog. I find this nasty, but friends, family, and people we barely know existed are dropping by to meet him. “It’s like having a baby, eh ” says my neighbor, Erik, brightly. “Yes, but it’s a baby you can neglect when it cries!” I respond cheerfully. He frowns (皱眉).
MONDAY
It’s 2 A.M. on the coldest day of the year and I’m on my hands and knees in the bushes. I think you’ve never really experienced a harsh mid-winter until you’re trying to run after a puppy. Then, we return inside, and it’s just me and Buzz. Peace. I should put him back in his cage, but I find I can’t resist a hug. Don’t tell my wife.
36.What does the phrase “puppy proof” our home mean in paragraph 2
A.Make our home clean enough for the puppy. B.Inspect our home to make it puppy-friendly.
C.Prove that the puppy will satisfy our needs. D.Decorate our home with books on puppies.
37.In the diary of “WEDNESDAY”, a passage is missing. Which of the following plot best fits into the numbered blank
A.Picking a dog ’s name from a name list of Blacks.
B.Looking over the house for potential safety hazards.
C.Studying Dunbar’s book on how to take care of a dog.
D.Visiting Dunbar in person in order to adopt his puppy.
38.Which of the following is the reason for naming the puppy “Buzz”
A.Other choices imply strong prejudice against Black people.
B.Its pronunciation resembles the puppy’s cute and short bark.
C.The registration website recommends the name to the family.
D.The name holds appeal to both the elder and the younger generations.
39.Which of the following does the diary feature after the adoption of the puppy
A.Chaos and cuteness. B.Hatred and love.
C.Mess and cleanliness. D.Abuse and affection.

(2023春·上海·高三校考阶段练习)Researchers in the field of psychology have found that one of the best ways to make an important decision, such as choosing a university to attend or a business to invest in, involves the utilization of a decision worksheet. Psychologists who study optimization compare actual decisions made by people with theoretical ideal decisions to see how similar they are. Supporters of the worksheet procedure believe that it will yield optimal, that is, the best decisions. Although there are several variations on the exact format that worksheet can take, they are all similar in their essential aspects. Worksheets require defining the problem in a clear and concise way and then listing all possible solutions to the problem. Next, the relevant considerations that will be affected by each decision are listed, and the relative importance of each consideration or consequence is determined. Each consideration is assigned a numerical value to reflect its relative importance. A decision is mathematically calculated by adding these values together. The alternative with the highest number of points emerges as the best decision.
Since most important problems are multifaceted (多层面的), there are several alternatives to choose from, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. One of the benefits of a pencil and paper decision-making procedure is that it permits people to deal with more variables than their minds can generally comprehend and remember. On the average, people can keep about seven ideas in their minds at once. A worksheet can be especially useful when the decision involves a large number of variables with complex relationships. A realistic example for many college students is the question “What will I do after graduation ” A graduate might seek a position that offers specialized training, pursue an advanced degree, or travel abroad for a year.
A decision-making worksheet begins with a brief statement of the problem that will also help to narrow it. It is important to be clear about the distinction between long-range and immediate goals because long-range goals often involve a different decision than short-range ones. Focusing on long range goals, a graduating student might revise the question above to “What will I do after graduation that will lead to a successful career ”
36.Of the following steps, which occurs before the others in making a decision worksheet
A.Listing the consequences of each solution.
B.Calculating a numerical summary of each solution.
C.Deciding which consequences are most important.
D.Writing down all possible solutions.
37.According to decision-worksheet theory, an optional decision is defined as one that ________.
A.has the fewest variables to consider B.uses the most decision worksheets
C.has the most points assigned to it D.is agreed by the greatest number of people
38.The author states that “On the average, people can keep about seven ideas in their minds at once” to explain that ________.
A.most decisions involve seven steps B.human mental capacity has limitations
C.some people have difficulty making minor as well as major decisions D.people can learn to keep more than seven ideas in their minds with practice
39.What does the passage mainly discuss
A.A tool to assist in making complex decisions.
B.A comparison of actual decisions and ideal decisions.
C.Research on how people make decisions.
D.Differences between long-range and short-range decision making.

Usually it was just break even. And there's nothing romantic about it. either.
““How many monkeys have you asked to be allowed to shoot ” I asked him.
He told me that he had, to begin with, asked for permission to shoot fifteen hundred monkeys.
Now I knew the people at the Game Department, and I assisted him to send in a second letter asking for a reply by return of post, since the Professor was keen to get off on his research. The answer from the Game Department did, for once, come by return of post. The Game Department, they wrote. were pleased to inform Professor Land-green that, in view of the scientific object of his research. they had seen their way to make an exception from the rules, and to raise the number of monkeys on his license from four to six.
I had to read the letter over twice to the Professor. When the contents at last were clear to him, he became so deadly shocked and hurt, that he did not say a single word. To my expressions of sympathy he mad no reply, but walked out of the house, got into his car an drove away sadly.

57.解析:答案选 B。根据文中 Don't most parents like to brag about their child’ success because it reflects well upon them When I speak of my sons’ lives, I feel pride in them as well as myself.
根据文中“ Problems only arise when it links up with shame, as I've written about before.”
根据文中讲的自己的例子以及最后一段中“Envy gets a bad rap but there's nothing unusual about it,”嫉妒是个坏名声,但也没什么不寻常的。以及“Problems only arise when it links up with shame, as I've written about before.问题只会在它和羞耻感联系起来时出现,就像我以前写过的那样。可知,作者对待嫉妒的态度的是积极的,我们需要正确的对待嫉妒。

They just want to be popular, loved and liked.
B. They only take great pains to earn more money.
C. They can do all kinds of daily work, such as caring for children and so on.
D. They are no longer needed except for being spoiled by adults.

B. Whatever decision she made, her father would support her.

56. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE
A. Money was created and was widely used in the world.
B. Tobacco was used as coins or paper bills in American in the past.
C. The ingredients of world’s first coins may be the combination of gold and silver.
D. Using shells for money has been out of date in the world.

A. a kind of money that can exchange
B. the leaves of a mint plant used fresh or candied
C. a place to produce and polish shells
D. a factory that produces currency
