Scientifc Method
The scientific method uses a series of steps to establish facts or create knowledge. The overall process is well established , but the specifics of each step may change depending on what is being examined and who is performing it. The scientific method can only answer questions that can be proven or disproven through testing.
Make an observation or ask a question. The first step is to observe something that you would like to learn about or ask a question that you would like answered. These can be specific or general. Some examples would be “I observe that our total available network bandwidth drops at noon every weekday” or “How can we increase our website registration numbers Taking the time to establish a well-defined question will help you in later steps.
Gather background information.
This involves doing research into what is already known about the topic, This can also involve finding if anyone has already asked the same question.
Create a hypothesis.
A hypothesis is an explanation for the observation or question. If proven later, it can become a fact. Some examples would be “ Our employees watching online videos during lunch is using our internet bandwidth”’ or “ Our website visitors don't see our registration form.Create a prediction and perform a test.Create a testable prediction based on the hypothesis. The test should establish a noticeable change that can be measured or observed using empirical analysis. It is also important to control for other variables during the test. Some examples would be “If we block video-sharing sites.our available bandwidth will not go down significantly during lunch” or “ If we make our registration box bigger, a greater percentage of visitors will register for our website than before the change.”
Analyze the results and draw a conclusion.
Use the metrics established before the test see if the results match the prediction. For example,“ After blocking video-sharing sites, our bandwidth utilization only went down by10% from before; this is not enough of a change to be the primary cause of the network congestion”or “After increasing the size of the registration box, the percent of sign-ups went from 2% of total page views to 5% , showing that making the box larger results in more registrations.
Share the conclusion or decide what question to ask next: Document the results of your experiment.
By sharing the results with others, you also increase the total body of knowledge available.Your experiment may have also led to other questions, or if your hypothesis is disproven you may need to create a new one and test that. For example, “Because user activity is not the cause of excessive bandwidth use, we now suspect that an automated process is running at noon everyday.
60What is the important role of collecting background information
A.Make full preparation for the research questions.
B.Understand the knowledge of existing research results.
C.Provide evidence to refute the research conclusion.
D.Encourage researchers to reflect deeply on their work.
61. In which case would it be necessary to create a new hypothesis for retesting
A. The research hypothesis has been fully proved.
B.The research results lead to other related issues.
C. The scope of test data needs to be expanded again.
D.The background investigation is not objective enough.
62. What can we infer from this passage
A. Creating a question will help you in the following step.
B.Collecting information includes research on an unknown subject.
C. The test should establish a change that cannot be measured easily.
D. You may need to create a new hypothesis if the old one is overturned.

Running is a great form of exercise. However , running under certain conditions can cause a variety of injuries.
The National Running Association recently released the results of its latest survey on common running injuries , as illustrated in the picture on the above. According to the survey results, the most reported cases are related to knee injury and muscle pull. With the former occurring a little less frequently. About a quarter of the respondents say they have had plantar fasciitis ( 筋膜炎 ) . The number of respondents suffering from Achilles tendonitis (跟腱炎) or shin splints in nearly twice that of those with stress fracture, which is also what fewest
respondents report.
There are two main causes of running injury: structural imbalance and training volume. Structural imbalance occurs when a certain muscle group is weak and requires other muscle groups to help. The body adapts to stresses and becomes stronger. This is the basic principle of training. However , if you push too fast or run too far, you can stress the body in such a way that it never has time to fully recover. Training progression and moderation are the keys to avoiding overuse injury. Here are several ways to avoid running injury.
Prepare your body for running by walking.
Understand your body type and be patient
Follow a sensible training plan or find a coach.
Wear the right shoes.
The cause of the injury is not easy to diagnose. For example, a foot problem can cause a problem in the knees or back. Finding and treating the cause of a running injury is the job of a trained doctor. More importantly , listen to your body and recognize the signs of over-training so that you can avoid running injury.
60. Which group of injuries best fits the blanks numbered (1), (2), 3) and (4) in the picture
A.(1) knee injury; (2)muscle pull; (3)stress fracture; (4) shin splints
B.(1)muscle pull; (2)knee injury; (3)stress fracture; (4)Achilles tendonitis.
C.(1)knee injury; (2)muscle pull; (3shin splints; (4)stress fracture
D.(1)muscle pull; (2)knee injury ; (3)Achilles tendonitis; (4)stress fracture
61. According to the passage, which of the following leads to structural imbalance
A.Using some muscles more intensely than others.
B.Training weak muscles more often than strong ones.
C.Adapting your body to stresses slowly.
D.Giving your body little time to recover.
62. According to the passage, if you want to find out why your back and knees hurt after running, you had better_______________.
A. turn to a coach for help
B. consult a trained doctor
C. understand your body type first
D. wear another pair of running shoes
【答案】60-62 DAB
【解析】
60.D[解析]根据文章第二段的According to the survey results, the most reported cases are related to knee injury and muscle pull, with the former occurring a little less frequently, About a quarter of the respondents say they have had plantar fasciitis, The number of respondents suffering from Achilles tendonitis or shin splints is nearly twice that of those with stress fracture, which is also what fewest respondents report可知报道的病例多与膝关节损伤和肌肉拉伤有关,前者发生的频率略低。
Structural imbalance occurs when a certain muscle group is weak and requires other muscle groups to help.可知当某一肌肉群虚弱,要其他肌肉群帮助时,就会发生结构失衡。A(使用某些肌肉的强度比其他肌肉大)正确:B(多训练弱肌,少训练强肌)、C(让身体慢慢适应压力)、D(让价的身体几乎没有时间恢复) 都说法错误,故选 A。
62.B[解析]根据文章最后一段的 The cause of the injury is not easy to diagnose. For example, a foot problem can cause a problem in the knees or back. Finding and treating the cause of a running injury is the job of a trained doctor.可知受伤的原不容易诊断。例如,脚的问题会导致膝盖或背部的问题。发现和治疗跑步损伤的原因是训练有素的医生的工作。也就是说如果你想知道为什么你的背部和膝盖步后疼,你最好去找医生。A(向教练寻求帮助)、C(首先了解自己的体型)D(穿另一双跑鞋)都说法错误,B(咨询训练有素的医生) 正确,故选 B

When I became a budget traveler, and I discovered some of the cheapest ways to travel around the world. Don’t let money problems stop you from traveling. Here are a few ways to travel cheap that can help you see the world on a budget.
1. Pay with points
You’re smart enough to know money doesn’t grow on trees, but earning credit card points and miles may have you thinking otherwise.
Figure out how much money you regularly spend, and consider making those purchases on a travel card, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, so that you have the potential to be rewarded with points and miles every time you swipe. You can redeem (兑换) these rewards for airfare, hotels and other qualifying expenses.
2. Want to score even cheaper flights
You may want to subscribe to Scott’s Cheap Flights. This email newsletter alerts budget travelers when airlines hold sales or mistakenly lower their prices. In the past, Scott’s Cheap Rights has notified subscribers about amazing deals like a $260 flight from New York to Paris and a flight from San Francisco to Bali for $ 364.
and are two more sites that may be able to help you find cheap flights, according to Nico Atienza, a front desk agent at the Travel Hacking Cartel.
3. Timing is everything
It’s typically easier to find cheap flights when your travel schedule is flexible.
Often, you’ll find the best deals when you travel in the middle of the week or take a red-eye flight overnight. If you’re prepared to face less-than-idyllic weather, you could save even more money on airfare and hotels by traveling during off-peak seasons.
“The most important thing is to be flexible on timing”, says Atienza. “The tighter your time frame, the less chance you’re going to get a cheap fare”.
It can also help to book early.
4. When you travel together, you can split the costs with your friends and family
There’s something to be said about solo travel.
But if you’re on a budget, you can split the costs of hotels and rental cars when you travel with a small group of friends or family. So don’t be shy about squeezing into a small motel room or renting an entire home on Airbnb if it’s less expensive per person.
“The optimal party size tends to work out to be four people,” says Atienza.
Any more than that and the hotel might charge you for another room.
You should also be able to fit about four people in your rental car, depending on the type of car you rent.
60. What is learned from the passage
A. The airfare from San Francisco to Bali is only $ 364.
B. You may find cheap flights from and .
C. The tighter your time frame, the more chance you’re going to get a cheap fare.
D. Atienza believes that the optimal party size tends to work out to be three people.
61. According to this article, which of the following is NOT a way to get cheap airline tickets
A. Redeem Points for Airline Tickets.
B. Notice the airlines’ price reduction and discount emails.
C. Choose off-season travel times.

How Do You Move a Giant Sequoia
Boise, Idaho, recently relocated a century-old, living tree provided by John Muir
Inhabitants of Boise, Idaho, watched with trepidation earlier this year as the city's oldest, tallest resident moved two blocks. The 105-year-old sequoia tree serves as a local landmark, not only for its longevity but also because renowned naturalist and Sierra Club co-founder John Muir provided the original seedling. So, when Saint Luke's Health System found that the 10-story-tall conifer (针叶树) stood in the way of its planned hospital expansion, officials called tree-moving firm Environmental Design.
The Texas-based company has developed and patented scooping and lifting technology to move massive trees. Weighing in at more than 800,000 pounds, the Boise sequoia is its largest undertaking yet. “I [had] lost enough sleep over this,” says David Cox, the company's Western region vice president—and that was before the hospital mentioned the tree's distinguished origin.
Before the heavy lifting began, the team assessed the root system and dug a five-foot-deep cylinder, measuring 40 feet in diameter, around the trunk to protect all essential roots. After encapsulating the root ball in wire mesh, the movers allowed the tree to acclimate to its new situation for seven months before relocating it. The illustration details what followed.-Leslie Nemo
l. Mark A Merit and his team at Environmental Design installed underneath the root ball a platform of seven-inch-diameter, 44-foot-long steelbars and , just below the rods , a first set of uninflated airbags ( shown in gray ). The team also dug a shallow ramp.
2. In roughly 15 minutes , the movers inflated the airbags to about three feet in diameter to raise the root ball to the surface of the hole.
3. By underinflating the front bags, the team allowed the platform carrying the tree to roll up the ramp and out of the hole while staying level. A trailer hauled the tree along as team members removed the airbags from the back of the platform and replaced them in the front. They repeated the process until the tree arrived at the edge of its new home.
4.There a second set of partially inflated bags( shown in white ) waited inside the hole. Soil surrounding the sequoia in its original location was relocated as well, because trees are more likely to survive a transplant when they move with their original soil.
5. Using the first set of airbags , the movers rolled the platform into the new hole.
6. The bags waiting there were then inflated further to take the weight of the sequoia while the transportation bags were deflated and removed from under the tree.
7. The white bags were then deflated in about half an hour to lower the sequoia's root ball to the bottom of its hole. The bags were removed, but the metal bars were left with the tree because they rust and degrade over a number of years.
8. For the next five years the local park service will monitor and maintain the tree in its new home.
60. Which of the following words can be used to replace the words underlined “stood in the way of"
A.Resisted. B.Balanced C. Blocked. D.Promoted
6l. What is the reason for the relocation of Sequoia trees
A. Because the Scooping and lifting technology should be put into use.
B. Because it blocks local hospital expansion plans.
C. Because it corresponds to government's plan of Environmental Design.
D. Because sequoia trees are over a hundred years old.
62. How will the migrated sequoia trees be dealt with
A. They will be given new soil in the new living environment
B. Metal rods used to move sequoia trees will not be left on the trees.
C. They will be kept in transport bags all the time
D. They will be managed by specialists in the next five years.

Why UPS Trucks (Almost) Never Turn Left
By favoring right-hand turns at all times--unless a left is unavoidable-the carrier saves millions of gallons of fuel each year, and avoids emissions equivalent to over 20 ,000 passenger cars.
The practice started decades ago, before computers and GPS, and is now managed by asoftware that conjures the most efficient route for each truck.
What's wrong with turning left
Left-hand turns are generally considered unsafe and wasteful on right-hand driving roads, such as those in the US.
A study on crash factors in intersection-related accidents from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Association shows that turning left is one of the leading "critical pre-crash events" (an event that made a collision inevitable), occurring in 22.2 percent of crashes, as opposed to 1.2 percent for right turns. About 61 percent of crashes that occur while turning or crossing an intersection involve left turns, as opposed to just 3.1 percent involving right turns.
Left turns are also three times more likely to kill pedestrians than right ones, according to data collected by New York City's transportation planners.
"A left-hand turn is also less fuel efficient," said Jack Levis, UPS Senior Director of Process Management, "because your car's idling longer, which is also not good for your vehicle."
UPS does not ban left turns outright, says Levis: "We will make left hand turns, but not ones that are unnecessary. We don't need to go in circles all day long by making only right hand turns. We have tools analyze the number of left hand turns for each route, and we can work out which ones are avoidable."
The rule, says Levis, can also be applied to left-hand driving countries, such as Australia and the UK, where it discourages right-hand turns and the procedure is now incorporated in most countries around the world.

(2023·上海·卢湾高级中学校考三模)When a sharp chest pain woke me up around 3 A.M., I had the obvious question: Was this truly panic-worthy
I thought about dialing 911, but then I noticed that… well, the pain was on the right side of my chest rather than the left. My breathing wasn’t labored. My heart wasn’t beating fast. So like millions before me, I compared my symptoms with those on the search engine. On top of the screen was an article entitled “16 Causes of Right Side Chest Pain.” Bingo, I thought—except it was an ad. I moved on to the actual search results, which were headlined “17 Causes of Pain in the Right Side of the Chest” and “26 Causes of Chest Pain & Tightness.” When I got to “3 Types of Chest Pain That Won’t Kill You,” I started wondering: What were all these weird articles
The titles were about making use of search engine’s algorithm (算法) to grab people’s attention at their weak moments. This is called search-engine optimization, or SEO: the art and science of engineering for higher placement in the search results and getting people to click on the links. Unlike a lot of “medical information” online, SEO itself is in fact based on the scientific method called stand-out. We notice things that stand out—like oddly precise numbers.
I still needed information, though, so I clicked on a result from WebMD.I had seen that site before, and it didn’t seem like it contained fake information. I was barely a paragraph or two in when I noticed links about lung cancer symptoms. Huh Lung cancer often causes no pain until its later stages. Then I realized that the information about lung cancer was an ad, but the “ad” sign was barely noticeable. During an emergency it is obviously not the best time to scare people into clicking links for unlikely diseases. Indeed, if you clicked on these “lung cancer symptoms,” the browser took you eventually to a site advertising a lung cancer medicine. Ugh.
Having medical information online be financed by advertisers or drug companies — or supplement manufacturers — is certainly not healthy. They often have an incentive (动机) to scare us. It’s a lose-lose situation. Sometimes we do need to be worried and seek medical care. Other times it’s just fearmongering clicks. But who can tell when one is in crisis
40.When the author searched her symptoms online, she was trying to find out whether _____.
A.she needed to call for an ambulance immediately
B.she should visit a medical professional for advice
C.there was an effective medicine for her chest pain
D.her pain was a sign of some kind of heart problem
41.According to SEO, which part of the following article title makes it stand out
16 Causes of Pain in the Right Side of the Chest that Won’t Kill You
A.“16.” B.“Causes of Pain.”
C.“Right Side of the Chest.” D.“Kill You.”
42.What is the main problem of the WebMD according to the author
A.Its information is too scary and worrying for browsers.
B.It is not a specialized website of lung cancer symptoms.
C.It is not designed for treating emergency situations.
D.It is probably sponsored by medical companies.
【答案】40.D 41.A 42.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。作者根据自己经历来描述一种互联网搜索现象,即搜索引擎优化,也就是SEO:在搜索结果中获得更高位置并让人们点击链接的工程艺术和科学。
40.细节理解题。根据第二段“So like millions before me, I compared my symptoms with those on the search engine. On top of the screen was an article entitled “16 Causes of Right Side Chest Pain.” Bingo, I thought—except it was an ad. I moved on to the actual search results, which were headlined “17 Causes of Pain in the Right Side of the Chest” and “26 Causes of Chest Pain & Tightness.”
根据第二段“Unlike a lot of “medical information” online, SEO itself is in fact based on the scientific method called stand-out. We notice things that stand out — like oddly precise numbers. (不像网上的很多“医学信息”,SEO本身其实是基于所谓的脱颖而出的科学方法。我们会注意到一些突出的东西——比如奇怪的精确数字)”可知,根据SEO,以下文章标题的数字会脱颖而出。故选A。
42.细节理解题。根据第四段“I still needed information, though, so I clicked on a result from WebMD. I had seen that site before, and it didn’t seem like it contained fake information. I was barely a paragraph or two in when I noticed links about lung cancer symptoms. Huh Lung cancer often causes no pain until its later stages. Then I realized that the information about lung cancer was an ad, but the “ad” sign was barely noticeable. (不过,我仍然需要一些信息,所以我点击了WebMD的一个结果。我以前见过那个网站,它看起来不像包含虚假信息。我刚读了一两段,就注意到有关肺癌症状的链接。嗯?肺癌通常直到晚期才会引起疼痛。然后我意识到,关于肺癌的信息是一个广告,但“广告”的标志几乎不明显)”以及最后一段“Having medical information online be financed by advertisers or drug companies—or supplement manufacturers—is certainly not healthy. They often have an incentive (动机) to scare us. (让广告客户、制药公司或保健品制造商为网上的医疗信息提供资金当然是不健康的。他们常常有吓唬我们的动机)”可知,作者认为WebMD的主要问题是广告客户、制药公司或保健品制造商为网上的医疗信息提供资金当然是不健康的,也就是它可能是由医药公司赞助的。故选D。

Summer Camp Rules
Whether it s your child's first year at camp , or they are a seasoned camper and need a little refresher , it’s a good idea to go over summer camp rules and guidelines before leaving for camp. Camp rules are in place lo keep the camp community safe and camp operations running smoothly throughout their stay.
Keep Your Personal Space Clean
Since your child will be in close quarters with many other campers , it’s important that they understand the necessity of keeping their sleeping and living areas organized.
Go over ways for your child to stay organized and tidy before they leave for camp. When packing, make sure to provide a laundry bag to keep clean and dirty clothing separate. Utilize under bed space or put clothes on your shelves or cabinets rather than living out of your suitcase or camp trunk.
It also helps to not over pack. Follow packing list guidelines closely so your child can find what they need without having to dig through piles of clothing that were not recommended. This also helps you child know what they have in their luggage so they pull out the sweatshirt when it gets cold. instead of thinking there wasn't one in their bag. Remind your child of their camp account so they can purchase items from the camp store if necessary.
2. Valuables at Camp
As a best practice, we recommend leaving all valuables at home, Even if your child has a bracelet or necklace that they never take off, there is still the chance that it could be lost while swimming or participating in camp activities
If you are thinking about bringing an expensive item of clothing, be prepared for it to gel lost or damaged. You may be better off buying a new, less expensive version. To be on the safe side, don't let your child bring anything irreplaceable or emotionally valuable to camp.
3. Play Nice
Name calling, fighting, bullying, and arguing are strictly prohibited at summer camp Camp is a place to make friends, so aggressive behavior is not tolerated. Remind your child that they don't have to be everybody's best friend, but they do have to be friendly to everyone.
Encourage your child to go into camp with the mindset of making a few new friends, and chances are they will leave camp having made more than a few.
4. Have Fun and Try New Things
At the end of the day, summer camp is about getting out of your comfort zone, trying new things, and having a blast. Before your child leaves for camp, congratulate them for being brave enough to try sleep away amp in the first place. Let them know that they've already won just by trying, and the fun part is just about to begin. Remind them again that summer camp rules exist only to improve the overall camp experience and to create a community of fun.
