Linda Richards was the first graduate of an American nursing school. After receiving her degree in 1873, she went to work at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Katherine Kelly told us an interesting story about her.
As night superintendent (主管) at the Bellevue Training School for Nurses, Linda Richards had to ask the day nurses for reports on the condition of her one hundred patients. “You are so full of questions! ” cried a day nurse with anger. “I could fill a penny notebook trying to answer them all!”
Linda was full of questions. She’d graduated a year before, and there was still so much she didn’t know. That night she thought of what the day nurse had said. Penny notebooks! Well, why not
At her first chance, she tied notebooks to the beds of her most badly ill patients. She asked the day nurses to keep a written record of each patient’s condition, and she would do the same at night.
One evening Linda stopped at the bed of a sailor. After watching her write in the notebook, he asked jokingly if she was trying to chart (制表) his course.
Why, that’s exactly what I'm trying to do, she thought. And so began the practice of keeping a patient’s chart, now used in hospitals and doctors’ offices all over the world. Linda Richards went on to become a leading person in the field of nurses’ training. She served as the first president of the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools in 1894,
which was the first professional organization (专业组织) for nurses. She took an active part in nursing organizations and can be regarded as one of the movers and shakers of the young job. She spent her life proving that “a trained nurse is better than an untrained one.” The American Nurses’ Association honored Linda Richard’s achievement by putting her picture on its seal (印章), with the words “Service, Humanity, Efficiency around.”

根据第三段“Linda was full of questions. She’d graduated a year before, and there was still so much she didn’t know. That night she thought of what the day nurse had said. Penny notebooks! Well, why not (琳达充满了疑问。她一年前就毕业了,还有很多她不知道的事情。那天晚上,她想起了日间护士说的话。便士笔记本!为什么不呢?)”、第四段“At her first chance, she tied notebooks to the beds of her most badly ill patients. She asked the day nurses to keep a written record of each patient’s condition, and she would do the same at night.(一有机会,她就把笔记本绑在病情最严重的病人的床上。她要求日间护士对每位患者的病情进行书面记录,晚上她也会这样做。)”以及第六段“began the practice of keeping a patient’s chart, now used in hospitals and doctors’ offices all over the

A project in Britain is trying to deal with the loneliness of the old by asking young people to work as volunteers to help the old.
Lorna Burnett was paired with 15-year-old Ailsa, a schoolgirl, through the Reading Friends project. Lorna used to read two to three books every week when she was a librarian. In her 40s, she developed a serious eye disease and her vision became worse and worse. Finally, she was unable to read or watch television for any length of time without her eyes hurting.
Not only have Lorna’s reading periods with Ailsa helped to reconnect her with her love for literature, they have also built a strong intergenerational friendship. “I chose a book and she would come along and read it to me,” Lorna said.
Since the Reading Agency started the program in 2017, they have introduced tens of Reading Friends periods across Northem Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England.
According to the organisation’s website, “Loneliness is an important health and well being problem for older people. Research shows that reading together can help older people to build social networks and connect with others. Fact also shows that reading has a good influence on cognitive functions (认知能力) and wellbeing and can reduce the risk of dementia (痴呆).”
Ruth Sheppard from Bannock bum High School is responsible for connecting schoolchildren like Ailsa with the program and she says that it has had an amazing influence on the young people. “We have wonderful young people at our school and we want to get them into the community,” Sheppard said. “It has been fantastic to see them become more confident as well as improving their reading ability and social skills. They are meeting community members like Lorna that they are making friendships with, and all the library workers also help them.”
32.What does the underlined word “vision” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.View. B.Sight. C.Strength. D.Confidence.
33.How does Ailsa help Lorna
A.By reading books to her.
B.By looking after her carefully.
C.By collecting good books for her.
D.By helping her with her library work,
34.Why does the author use the words on the Reading Agency’s website
A.To explain the bad influence of loneliness.
B.To introduce the health condition of the old.
C.To show the necessity of running the program.
D.To encourage young people to join the program.
35.What can we learn from Ruth Sheppard’s words
A.The program is also good for the students.
B.The program needs more students like Ailsa.
C.The program has won the support of communities.
D.The program is highly thought of by many students.
【答案】32.B 33.A 34.C 35.B
根据前文“In her 40s, she developed a serious eye disease(40多岁时,她患上了严重的眼病)”提到了Lorna Burnett在40多岁时患上了严重的眼部疾病,画线词所在句的“and”表达并列顺承关系,由此可推知“her vision became worse and worse”应是表达“她的视力越来越差”含义。
根据文章第三段内容“‘I chose a book and she would come along and read it to me,’ Lorna said.(“我选一本书,她会过来读给我听,”Lorna说。)” 故选A项。
分析第四段内容“Loneliness is an important health and wellbeing problem for older people. Research shows that reading together can help older people to build social networks and connect with others. Fact also shows that reading has a good influence on cognitive functions and wellbeing and can reduce the risk of dementia.(孤独对老年人来说是一个重要的健康和幸福问题。
根据文章末尾段Sheppard的话“‘We have wonderful young people at our school and we want to get them into the community,’ Sheppard said. (Sheppard说:“我们学校有很多优秀的年轻人,我们想让他们融入社区。”)”可知,她提出想让更多的优秀年轻人融入社区,并在后文“It has been fantastic to see them become more confident as well as improving their reading ability and social skills. They are meeting community members like Lorna that they are making friendships with, and all the library workers also help them.(看到他们变得更加自信,阅读能力和社交技巧也有所提高,真是太棒了。他们会见了像Lorna这样的社区成员,并与他们建立了友谊,所有的图书馆工作人员也会帮助他们。)”讲到了该项目带给年轻人的好处,从而进一步暗示了希望更多的人加入这个项目。因此,通过她的话可推测,这个项目需要更多像Ailsa这样的年轻人的加入。故选B项。

Simple Ways to Build Trust
The most valuable thing you can have is trust. When there is no trust, it becomes hard to get anything done. 36 Then think of another one with very little trust.
Which one do you prefer
We can all be better off with more trust in our lives. And I’m going to show you a few things you can do to build trust.
Be honest. Honesty is the basis of any relationship. Be true to your word and keep your promises.
Share honest information, even if it’s to your disadvantage.
Ask open-ended questions. 37 Open-ended questions give your friends chances to tell you about themselves. Ask more questions based on the answers that you get.
Don’t be perfect. There is always something fishy(可疑的) about someone who seems to have everything going for them. 38 This sends a message that you’re not hiding anything and that you want to build trust.
Say what you mean. 39 When you build up a reputation of saying what you mean, people don’t have to second-guess what you’re trying to say. This helps you win trust.
Don’t blame others. 40 Be brave to take responsibility and then decide what you’re going to do next. Don’t waste the present thinking about the past which can’t be changed. A person that doesn’t blame gets the trust of others quickly.
A.If you think it’s a bad idea, say so.
B.When things go wrong, don’t point the finger at them.
C.Value long-term relationships more than short-term success.
D.Don’t waste your energy hiding your mistakes or weaknesses.

Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I was studying to become a firefighter. I was a volunteer fire aide in New York, and was studying at Mission College. As a firefighter, you should always think of other people and try to help other people.
One night after going to class, I was walking home and decided to stop off at a fast food restaurant. I lived in an apartment alone near my college so most of the time I used to get a take-out, I got my food and started to head home when a homeless man walked to me. He looked 20 or so. He was very dirty and obviously very hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the restaurant to order food together. For someone who had been on the fringes(边缘) of society it seemed like he was very surprised at my generosity(慷慨). But to me, it was what any ”human being“ should do or at least offer. He was afraid to go into the restaurant because of shame. But I insisted. When he finally followed me and walked into the restaurant, the people behind the counter refused to let him in, but I told them that I was buying him dinner and he had a right to be there. After some arguments, they finally let him in and he sat down at the table. It seemed like he was relieved a bit to be sitting at a table, I asked him to order whatever he wanted. He only ordered a hamburg, so I had to encourage him to order whatever he wanted.

Finally he ordered three hamburgers and we began to talk. I asked why he was on
the street. He was silent, with his head dropping. After a while, he said that his parents died from an accident when he was twelve. He had been homeless since then. There was no job he could do to support himself, He had no place to live in and had to hang out most of the time. Hearing his words, I was heartbroken. I asked him if he minded sharing an apartment with me.
He stood up and looked at me, open-mouthed. I smiled, repeating my words. Suddenly, he grasped my hands tightly, with tears rolling down his face. He couldn’t say a word but I knew what he wanted to say, I told him he could find a job near my apartment and start a new life! A bright smile appeared on his face, ”I couldn’t thank you more. You light up my life!" he said heartily. I felt very happy. After enjoying our food, we headed for the door as well as our new life.

She served as the first president of the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools in 1894, which was the first professional organization (专业组织) for nurses. She took an active part in nursing organizations and can be regarded as one of the movers and shakers of the young
job. She spent her life proving that “a trained nurse is better than an untrained one.” The American Nurses’ Association honored Linda Richard’s achievement by putting her picture on its seal (印章), with the words “Service, Humanity, Efficiency around.”

Research shows that reading together can help older
people to build social networks and connect with others.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Finally he ordered three hamburgers and we began to talk.
He stood up and looked at me, open-mouthed.
