China is widely known for its ancient civilisation which has continued all the way through into modem times, despite the many ups and downs in its history. There are many reasons why this has been possible, but one of the main factors has been the Chinese writing system.
By the Shang Dynasty, these symbols had become a well-developed writing system. Over the years, the system developed into different forms, as it was a time when people were divided geographically, leading to many varieties of dialects and characters. This, however, changed under Emperor Qinshihuang of the Qin Dynasty. Emperor Qinshihuang united the seven major states into one unified country where the Chinese writing system began to develop in one direction. That writing system was of great importance in uniting the Chinese people and culture.

When I was a high school student, mathematics looked like a big barrier for me and several of my classmates. When we reached the ninth class, we got Mr Iyer, a strict maths teacher who was also our class teacher. He always stuck to his discipline. We had to arrive on time, pay undivided attention to his lectures, and dared not to neglect any of his homework.
Even so, as our class teacher, we got to know him better. Noticing some of us fidgeting one day as the mid term exams approached, he stopped solving a mathematical problem to ask us why. “There’s too much to do, ” we sighed. “We’re afraid we’ll never manage to finish our revision before the exam.” “Nothing is impossible, ” Mr Iyer told us. “This classroom is on the second floor. Do you have a problem reaching here ” We reacted with blank stares.
“No, you don’t!” he said, answering his own question.“You have a staircase to help you climb up to this level. No one expects you to make it in two giant leaps. You simply take one step at a time. Any task can be solved if you focus on the immediate action to be taken. The rest will take care of itself, if you keep at it. One step at a time. That’s the secret.” Then he wrote down an old motto on the blackboard—the longest journey starts with a single step. Having heard his staircase analogy(比拟), we understood why he asked us the question and we saw him in a new light.
Most of my classmates scored distinctions in maths. And I went on to become an English teacher. To this day, whenever I pass on Mr Iyer’s invaluable advice to my own students, they brighten up at the prospect of a lighter academic burden.
24.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A.Maths was difficult for most of the author’s classmates.
B.The students thought Mr Iyer was not a good teacher.
C.Mr Iyer would punish the students neglecting his discipline.
D.The students showed great fear to Mr Iyer.
25.Which of the following words is closest in meaning to the underlined word “fidgeting” in Paragraph 2
A.excited B.nervous C.hardworking D.calm
26.Why did the author and his classmates react with blank stares
A.Because they were too tired to understand what Mr Iyer said.
B.Because they felt surprised at such an unbelievable problem.
C.Because they had no interest in any subjects that were no good for their exams.
D.Because they first thought reaching the second floor had no connection with the worry.
27.What does the staircase analogy infer
A.Goals can be reached step by step.
B.One can reach his/her goals in a giant leap.
C.Tasks can be solved under the guidance of the teacher.
D.There is only one step between success and failure.
【答案】24.D 25.B 26.D 27.A
根据第一段中“He always stuck to his discipline. We had to arrive on time, pay undivided attention to his lectures, and dared not to neglect any of his homework.(他总是坚持他的原则。我们必须准时到达,全神贯注地听他的讲座,不能忽视他的任何家庭作业。)”可知,学生们对Mr Iyer表现出极大的恐惧。故选D。
25.词义猜测题。根据第二段中“as the mid term exams approached.”(期中考试临近)以及“There’s too much to do, “ we sighed.” We’re afraid we’ll never manage to finish our revision before the exam.”
根据倒数第三段中 “Any task can be solved if you focus on the immediate action to be taken. The rest will take care of itself, if you keep at it. One step at a time. That’s the secret.(如果你专注于立即采取的行动,任何任务都可以解决。如果你坚持下去,剩下的事情就会自行解决。一步一个脚印。这就是秘密)”可知,我们的目标就像爬楼梯一样,会一步一步的实现。故选A。

Students at St. Stanislaus High School in Mississippi are among the volunteers along US coasts raising oysters (牡蛎) to help restore, or repair weakened reefs (礁). Oyster reefs are an important part of coastal environments. Each oyster cleans 95 to 190 liters of water a day. The reefs provide living space for shrimp, crabs and fish. They also protect coastlines. In the states of Maryland, Virginia, Mississippi, and Alabama, now there are more than 1,000 oyster gardens. Most of them are in wire cages hanging from private ports.
Colin Wood, one student looking after the St. Stanislaus garden, said he was excited by the hands-on work. “I didn’t realize oysters had a big influence on the environment. And 50,000 to 55,000 adult oysters grown here each year go to reefs in Mobile Bay,” he said.
In the 1950s, an average of 37,400 tons of oysters were taken yearly from partly salty waters in the US. But US oyster harvests fell sharply in the 1990s. Data showed the cause of the drop could be overharvesting, pollution, pests and other problems. Then oyster gardening started.
Oyster gardening uses many of the same methods as farming. Farmers around the country grow oysters near the surface of water. Oysters develop much faster where the water holds more food they eat and enemies can be more easily removed. But the oysters are not being grown to be eaten. Oyster gardens get pulled from the water every seven to ten days. The time out of the water is used to clear out small animals, keep oysters from growing through the wires, and dry and clean off plant-life growing on the wires.
Bob Stokes, the director of the Galveston Bay Foundation in Texas, says, “Oyster gardening is as much about education as it is restoration.”
28.How does Colin Wood feel about his work
A.Simple. B.Tiring. C.Creative. D.Meaningful.
29.What does the author mainly intend to show in paragraph 3
A.The use of oyster gardening.
B.The influence of oyster harvests falling.
C.The reason for starting oyster gardening.

According to a new report in Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, the number of online posts related to the circulation(流通) of used goods in 2022 increased by 814 percent year on year. Instead of buying useless things, people are changing towards using secondhand goods and replacing underused or unused objects. This trend is picking up in the country.
Since the summer of 2022, a 26-year-old Shanghai citizen named Chen Jiaorong has been walking along Julu Road in Shanghai’s downtown area once or twice a week, looking around and picking up “garbage” (垃圾). After her action was noticed online, she was described by others as a “stooper”.
The word “stoop” means to bend forward, but in the United States, it also refers to a platform or entrance stairway to a house. The term “stooper” was created in the US after a lot of people put their used or underused belongings in front of their doorsteps to be taken away for free by those in need. Later, “stooping” was used to mean “picking up abandoned goods and recycling them”.
As the first “stooper” in China, Chen had her own way. She picked unused goods to help find suitable new owners for some items. When she found such abandoned (被抛弃的) goods, she put a pair of eyeball-shaped stickers on them before publishing notes on her social media accounts, and guiding others to pick them up from the streets.
“‘Stooping’ is a new word in China, and some people even have no idea of it. Most of us still think secondhand goods are dirty and it is embarrassing to reuse them,” said Wu Kaisi, a well-known stooper in Guangzhou. “The slowing economy and the increasing cost of living have pushed the development of the used-goods industry. People are gradually advocating (提倡) a savings-based consumption (消费) and environment-friendly lifestyle instead of blindly seeking for expensive consumption. Now, more young people are joining us.”
32.What does the report in paragraph 1 show
A.Selling used items is popular among young people.
B.Reusing secondhand goods has become a new trend.
C.People tend to buy products from social media platform.
D.The buying power of Chinese consumers is in decline.
33.What is the purpose of paragraph 3
A.To explain a fact. B.To make a prediction.
C.To make some concepts clear. D.To present an example.
34.How did Chen find owners for the abandoned goods
A.By organizing offline sales. B.By displaying them on Julu Road.
C.By putting up notices on the street. D.By posting related information online.
35.What does Wu Kaisi think of the lifestyle of stooping
A.It is embarrassing.
B.It is worth advocating.
C.It slows down the development of economy.
D.It changes young people’s wasteful lifestyle
根据第一段“According to a new report in Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, the number of online posts related to the circulation(流通) of used goods in 2022 increased by 814 percent year on year. Instead of buying useless things, people are changing towards using secondhand goods and replacing underused or unused objects. This trend is picking up in the country.(根据中国社交媒体平台小红书的一份新报告,2022年与二手商品流通相关的在线帖子数量同比增长814%。人们不再购买无用的东西,而是转向使用二手商品,更换未充分利用或未使用的物品。这一趋势在该国逐渐抬头。)”可推测出,重复利用二手物品已经成为一个新趋势。故选B。
33.推理判断题。根据第三段“The word ‘stoop’ means to bend forward, but in the United States, it also refers to a platform or entrance stairway to a house. The term ‘stooper’ was created in the US after a lot of people put their used or underused belongings in front of their doorsteps to be taken away for free by those in need. Later, ‘stooping’ was used to mean ‘picking up abandoned goods and recycling them’.(‘弯腰’一词的意思是向前弯曲,但在美国,它也指通往房屋的平台或入口楼梯。‘弯腰者’一词是在美国产生的,因为很多人把他们用过或未充分使用的物品放在家门口,由有需要的人免费拿走。后来,‘弯腰’被用来表示‘捡起废弃的物品并回收利用’。)”可知,本段主要解释了stoop、stooper、stooping三个词的含义,由此可推测出,本段主要是为了把一些概念讲清楚。故选C。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“When she found such abandoned(被抛弃的) goods, she put a pair of eyeball-shaped stickers on them before publishing notes on her social media accounts, and guiding others to pick them up from the streets.(当她发现这些被遗弃的物品时,她在上面贴了一对眼球状的贴纸,然后在社交媒体账户上发布笔记,并引导其他人从街上捡起来。)”
根据最后一段中Wu Kaisi的话“The slowing economy and the increasing cost of living have pushed the development of the used-goods industry. People are gradually advocating(提倡) a savings-based consumption(消费) and environment-friendly lifestyle instead of blindly seeking for expensive consumption. Now, more young people are joining us.”(经济放缓和生活成本上升推动了二手商品行业的发展。

How is eating in space different from eating on Earth
If you send astronauts into space, you have to send along food as well. But what do astronauts eat, and how do they eat it Scientists take several factors into consideration as they plan meals for space.
First, and possibly most important, is nutrition (营养). 36 Providing junk food to eat, such as potato chips, sodas, and pizza, would make the astronauts unhealthy.
37 If the food that has been provided is distasteful, then the astronauts may avoid eating it. If you’ve ever tried to concentrate on something important while your stomach doesn’t feel well, you’ll know why the scientists in charge of a space mission want their astronauts to eat regularly.
The lack of gravity in a spacecraft also determines what foods can or cannot be eaten in space. Meals must be packaged carefully so they won’t spill (洒落/溢出) into the cabin (one of the areas inside a spacecraft). Water or tiny bits of food could get inside a machine or electronic device and damage it. 38 A loose knife bouncing (弹起) around inside the cabin would be dangerous.
39 The weight of every object included in a spacecraft must be calculated (计算) in order to ensure that there is enough fuel and power to carry the craft safely into space and back home again. 40 Most foods are stored in plastic bags, and often, the foods are dehydrated (使脱水). When an astronaut is ready to eat, hot water is added to the meal and warm it up.
Despite all these requirements, much of the food eaten in space is actually similar to what you might eat on any given day.
A.Believe it or not, they also have fresh fruits and vegetables.
B.Keeping astronauts’ physical health is a top task for any space mission.
C.Food packaging is made to be as light as possible.
D.Taste is also important.
E.For the same reason, sharp knives and folks are never used on board.
F.Nutrition and practicality(实用) are important things to consider.
G.Finally, weight is an important concern.

One time, the teachers at a school wanted to teach the students about airplanes. While all airplanes can fly, some are able to fly farther than others. This is because not all airplanes are built the same. For example, a fighter plane looks very different from a plane that people fly in when they want to go on a holiday. The teachers wondered how they could make students understand this.
Then, the science teacher, Mr Moose, decided that the school should have a paper airplane contest. The students would produce paper airplane designs. They would stand in line on the playground behind the school. The students would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane went the farthest would win.
When Mr Moose announced the paper airplane contest to the students, they were very excited. A student named Paul, who was on the wrestling team, bragged (吹牛) to everyone else that his airplane would win. “I am the strongest,” Paul said. “So I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.” However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian realized what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into his backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn't go very far, so Brian took another sheet and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day was the contest. All the students lined up. Everyone took turns. After a while, everyone had thrown except Paul and Brian. Paul went first. With a mighty yell, he launched the airplane into the sky. It went farther than any other airplane. Everyone clapped. Finally, it was Brian's turn. Brian took the airplane that he had picked up the day before. He walked up to the line and, with all his strength, he threw the plane. It went flying, farther and farther, until finally it landed—10 feet past Paul's plane! The whole school cheered. Brian was the winner. Mr Moose gave him a prize: a toy airplane.
Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far. He did this by testing out many different designs and comparing the results. When he found the design that worked best—the paper airplane that flew the farthest—he used it. Because Brian tried a lot of designs, he was able to make up for his lack of strength and beat Paul.
如:line up,than any other, with all his strength等高级词汇;Brian took the airplane that he had picked up the day before. Because Brian tried a lot of designs, he was able to make up for his lack of strength and beat Paul.
