【答案】18.B 19.A 20.C
W: When you turn on the radio, you hear an advertisement. When you watch television, you hear and see an advertisement. If you turn the pages of a newspaper or magazine, again you find an advertisement. If you walk down the street, you see one advertising board after another. All day, every day, people who want to sell you something compete to catch your attention. As a result, advertisements are almost everywhere. In the West, advertisements are the fuel that makes mass media work. The government does not give money to mass media such as TV stations, newspapers, magazines and radio stations. They are all owned privately. So where does the money come from From advertisements. Without advertisements, there would not be these private businesses. Have you ever asked yourself what advertising is Through the years, people have given different answers to the question. For some time it was felt that advertising was a means of “keeping your name before the public.” And some people thought that advertising was “truth well told.” Now more and more people describe it in this way: Advertising is the paid, nonpersonal, and usually persuasive description of goods, services and ideas through various media.

One day of the last December, I was sitting on a long, black and folding medical table. Beside me was a woman in a down jacket talking about the cold change the weather had taken recently. A radio in the corner was playing Christmas music, even though it was still weeks away. I took a drink from the bottle of lemonade I had brought with me, so I wouldn’t get dizzy (眩晕的).
I looked around at all the other people lying on their medical tables. Each of us had a needle in our arm, which was connected to a tube that led to a plastic bag. Each of us had come to give a precious gift to help others, make the world a better place, and perhaps even save a life.
It was the local blood drive and I had driven 12 miles across snowy roads to get there. I tried never to miss one even in winter. Despite all the time it took, I felt blessed being able to give this gift back to others. I had been given so much in my life: a kind husband, a loving family, many friends, and enough money to meet my needs. These gifts made me feel wonderful, yet the one thing that brought me more happiness was giving something back.
As you know, in the world, nothing brings you as much joy as taking your place in the great circle of love. In this circle, the more you give back, the more you get in return; the more love you let flow from your heart, the more love flows into it.
There are so many gifts you can give in this life: a smile, a kind word, a few dollars, a hug, a caring letter, and even a pint of blood. Each of them is priceless and precious. What you have to do is take action. In this way, the world will be filled with love.

A.It was lonely. B.It was happy.
C.It was worrying. D.It was interesting.
26.Which of the following can best describe the author
A.Caring. B.Brave. C.Honest. D.Hard-working.
27.What does the author want to express in the last paragraph
A.We should always keep smiling. B.We need to write letters to others.
C.We should pay love back to others. D.We need to buy friends priceless gifts.

As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult and they may seem to happen quickly. Don’t panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now!
With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about your choices so that you can make healthy balanced decisions that will help shape your future. You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will present itself to you.
Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. You will probably want to be independent. But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself. Your family have been with you since you came into this world.
It is also perfectly natural in this time for you to spend more time with your friends than your family. Choose your friends wisely. A true friend will stand by you no matter what happens.
This period is part of the life cycle. There are some people who will be with you throughout life’s journey and there will be some people with whom you part and go separate ways. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not ever see all of your classmates again.
You are a young adult. It is your life. No one can live it for you. The choices that you make from now on will be your choices. So making the right choices will be important to you. Life is for living. Enjoy your life wisely!

Ada Palmer is a professor of European history at the University of Chicago. Her science-fiction series, Terra Ignota, was inspired by 18th-century philosophers such as Voltaire and Diderot. “I wanted to write a story that Voltaire might have written if Voltaire had be enable to read the last 70 years’ worth of science fiction and have all of those tools available (可获得的) for his use,” Palmer says in a radio program called Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Palmer says that Voltaire could actually be considered the first sci-fic writer, thanks to a place he wrote in 1752. “Voltaire has a short story called Micromégas, in which an alien from Saturn and an alien from a star near Sirius come to Earth. They are extremely big in size. They explore Earth and have trouble finding life forms because to them a whale is the size of a flea (跳蚤)”, she says. They eventually realize that the tiny little spot of wood on the ground is a ship, and it’s full of living things, including humans, and they make contact. So it’s a first-contact story.
Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein is often considered the first sci-fi novel. Voltaire was writing much earlier than Shelley, so should he have the title instead It depends on your definition (定义) of science fiction. “Micromégas doesn’t involve technology,” Palmer says, “so if you define science fiction as depending upon technology—and being about, in the Frankenstein sense. Is man’s knowledge giving us access to powers beyond what we’ve had before What does that mean ’—it isn’t asking that. But ‘aliens and first contact’ is a very significant science fictional element.”
So there’s no obvious answer to the question of who should be considered the first sci-fi writer. Palmer says it’s more important to ask the question than to arrive at any particular answer. “I don’t want to argue, ‘Yes, definitely, everybody’s histories of science fiction should start with Voltaire,” she says. “But I do want to argue that everybody’s histories of science fiction will be richer by discussing whether Voltaire is the beginning of science fiction, or whether it’s earlier or whether it’s later. Because that gets at the question of what science fiction is.”
32.What do we know about Micromégas according to the text
A.It is widely accepted as a science-fiction story.
B.It has a big influence on today’s science fiction.
C.Its main characters have trouble finding humans.
D.Its content is about humans’ exploration of space.
33.Why does Ada Palmer regard Voltaire as a sci-fi writer
A.One of his stories focuses on technology. B.His story involves aliens from other planets.
C.He described human-alien contact in a story. D.Her science fiction was inspired by his writing.
34.What does Ada Palmer really want to discuss when it comes to science fiction
A.Its true origin. B.What it can cover.
C.Its colourful expressions. D.Why it is interesting.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Ada Palmer and science fiction. B.Was Voltaire the first sci-fi author
C.Technology’s role in science fiction. D.What is science fiction really about
根据第二段“Voltaire has a short story called Micromégas, in which an alien from Saturn and an alien from a star near Sirius come to Earth. They are extremely big in size. They explore Earth and have trouble finding life forms because to them a whale is the size of a flea (跳蚤), she says. “They eventually realize that the tiny little spot of wood on the ground is a ship, and it’s full of living things, including humans, and they make contact.(伏尔泰有一个短篇故事叫《Micromégas》,讲的是一个来自土星的外星人和一个来自天狼星附近恒星的外星人来到地球。它们的体型非常大。她说,他们探索地球,却很难找到生命形式,因为对他们来说,鲸鱼只有跳蚤那么大。他们最终意识到,地面上那一小块木头是一艘船,船上满是生物,包括人类,他们接触了)”可知,从文章中可知《Micromégas》的主角很难找到人类。故选C项。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段“Micromégas doesn’t involve technology,” Palmer says, “so if you define science fiction as depending upon technology—and being about, in the Frankenstein sense, Is man’s knowledge giving us access to powers beyond what we’ve had before What does that mean ’—it isn’t asking that. But ‘aliens and first contact’ is a very significant science fictional element.(“Micromégas并不涉及技术,”帕尔默说,“所以如果你把科幻小说定义为依赖于技术,并且是关于弗兰肯斯坦那种意义上的:人类的知识是否给予我们比以前更强大的力量?那意味着什么?——它并未涉及这一点。但“外星人和首次接触”是一个非常重要的科幻元素。”)”可知,帕尔默认为“外星人和首次接触”是一个非常重要的科幻元素,所以认为Micromégas是科幻小说,从而认为伏尔泰是一位科幻作家。故选C项。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段“So there’s no obvious answer to the question of who should be considered the first sci-fi writer. Because that gets at the question of what science fiction is.”(所以,谁应该被认为是第一个科幻作家这个问题没有明确的答案。
根据第二段“Palmer says that Voltaire could actually be considered the first sci-fic writer, thanks to a place he wrote in 1752.( 帕尔默说,伏尔泰实际上可以被认为是第一位科学作家,这要归功于他在1752年写的一篇文章)”以及第三段“Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein is often considered the first sci-fi novel. Voltaire was writing much earlier than Shelley, so should he have the title instead
Failure is likely the most tiring experience one ever has. There is nothing more exhausting than not succeeding. 36
In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it was either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel. Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. 37
Years ago, I was asked to write 102 essays on the great ideas of some famous authors. Applying my own rule, I determined to write them alphabetically, never letting myself leave out a tough idea. And I always started the day’s work with the most difficult task of essay-writing. The experience proved that the rule works.
38 Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work, we fail again and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can then let the unconsciousness (无意识) take over.
When planning Encyclopedia Britannica, I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Day after day, I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked. 39 One day, mentally exhausted, I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. Relieved, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep. 40 In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind proved correct at every step. Though I worked as hard as before, I felt no fatigue. Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing.
Human beings, I believe must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.
A.My fatigue became almost unbearable.
B.I felt depressed and gave it up eventually.
C.Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle.

36.根据上文“There is nothing more exhausting than not succeeding.(没有什么比不成功更累的了)”和下文“In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it was either too boring or too difficult.(在前一种情况下,我们总是推迟一项任务,因为它要么太无聊,要么太难)”可知,空格处应指出疲惫感分为两种情况,引出下文。选项G“Here are two ways of exhaustion ——start-up fatigue and performance fatigue.(由两种方式的疲劳:启动疲劳和执行疲劳)”指出了两种疲劳,符合语境。故选G。
37.根据上文“In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it was either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel. Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. (在前一种情况下,我们不断推迟一项任务,因为它要么太无聊,要么太难。拖延得越久,我们就越觉得累。这种创业疲劳是非常真实的,即使不是身体上的,也不是肌肉和骨骼上的。)”可推知,我们会因为拖延太无聊、太难的工作而感到疲惫不堪。选项F“The solution is not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first.(这种解决方案是不容易采用的:总是先处理最困难的工作)”提出了一个解决这种情况的办法,即先处理最困难的事,符合语境。故选F。
38.根据下文“Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work, we fail again and again.”(虽然我们愿意开始,但似乎不能把工作做好。 选项C意为“Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle.(表现疲劳更难处理。)”
39.上文“When planning Encyclopedia Britannica, I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Day after day, I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked.(在规划《大英百科全书》时,我必须根据文章的主题创建一个目录。日复一日,我不断想出解决办法,但没有一个奏效。)”讲述作者在做一项任务时,日复一日的想不出可行的办法,选项A “My fatigue became almost unbearable.( 我的疲劳几乎无法忍受。)”
40.根据上文“One day, mentally exhausted, I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. Relieved, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.(一天,我精疲力尽,试着说服自己,麻烦出在问题本身,而不是我。我松了一口气,靠在安乐椅上睡着了。)”和下文“In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind and proved correct at every step.”(在接下来的几个星期里,在我的潜意识里想出了解决办法,而且每一步都证明是正确的。) E“An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind.

故填its/the。
故填as。
故填to relate。
故填where。

When my son Ryan was six years old and in first grade, his teacher, Nancy, talked to his class about developing countries and how they could help people, particularly children, in other parts of the world. She explained that besides not having toys or enough food, some of them didn’t even have clean water. When Ryan heard people died because they didn’t have clean water, he was deeply affected. He came home that day and insisted he needed seventy dollars for class the next morning.
We thought it was very nice that he wanted to do something important, but we didn’t take it seriously. After all, Ryan was only six years old-and we just ignored it.
The next day, Ryan came home very upset because he hadn’t been able to take the seventy dollars to school. People were dying, and he insisted he needed that money.
Mark and I discussed it, then explained to Ryan that seventy dollars was a lot of money. If he was really interested in doing something, however, he could earn it by doing some chores.
He happily agreed and worked and worked and worked. With every two dollars he earned, he got to throw his money into a cookie tin. He never stopped working. He did chores for the neighbors and his grandparents, picked up brush after an ice storm-and it all went right into the cookie tin!
After four months, Ryan was nearing his goal. And we took him to a Canadian nonprofit organization providing clean water for people in developing countries.
However, Nicole, the chief director, thanked him and told him it would cost a lot more than $70 to build a well-in fact, it would cost $2,000.

Ryan wasn’t concerned and replied simply, “That’s okay. I’ll just do more chores!”. Obviously, little did he know how much money $2000 means to him, and even to us. However, we were so glad that he was so determined to make a difference and decided to make joint efforts to realize his dream. The next days witnessed each family’s efforts. My son cleaned the floor for his uncle, my husband delivering packages, I babysitting for friends.
News about what we were doing got out, and soon we were getting calls from the media. With them interviewing us and posting the story online, people from all over were inspired to embrace his dream. We began to receive donations at least once a week. Finally, as a result of those donations, together, we all saw the amazing well that has allowed children in the developing world to have fresh, clean water every day. Ryan’s dream has changed the lives of so many people and Ryan has also shown me what the power of dreams can do.

D.Use your unconsciousness and you can reduce your tiredness.
E.An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind.
F.The solution is not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first.
G.Here are two ways of exhaustion ——start-up fatigue and performance fatigue.
