1.(2024·江苏镇江·统考二模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My heart sank as I heard the clicking sound of the electricity being shut off again. It was two days before Thanksgiving. I had been unemployed for months, and my daughter and I were barely surviving. I grabbed my purse in an attempt to fix the problem. I gathered all the change that I could, but $1.75 was not going to solve our problem. We were months behind on the rent, to the point that warning notices to move were being posted on our door daily. Now we were not only going to be forced out of the only home, but we were going to make that move in the dark and cold.
My daughter got home from school. “Is the electricity off again ” she asked with a tone of accusation. “Yes,” was all that I could gather as I hung my head in shame. “Mom, are we poor ” “Only financially,” I responded, choking back the tears.
At that moment, I felt a burst of energy. I had to do everything I could to make sure that Thanksgiving happened. After all, it would be our last one in our home.
I had made Orphan (孤儿) Thanksgiving, which welcomed those people with nowhere to go, a tradition for 14 years. Now, with a warning notice and no electricity, how would I make my 15th Orphan Thanksgiving a reality
I had to ask for help, but slowly I was getting things done. I put out an announcement that it would be the last Orphan Thanksgiving at my house. People living next door were generous enough to offer help. We gathered candles. We cleaned the room. All that was left was to find the money to buy food for a Thanksgiving meal.
That night, I sat in my candlelit bedroom with my daughter sleeping soundly next to me. I held my grandmother’s gold necklace in my hand for what felt like a lifetime. She was the woman who taught me to cook when I could barely walk. She grew up during the Depression, and she had told me many stories of hardship. I reasoned that she would have approved of my giving to those less fortunate. She would have approved.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The next morning I sold the necklace. And then I rushed to the store to buy a turkey with some vegetables and fruits. By the time the food was made and guests started to arrive, I looked exhausted but happy. The aroma of Turkey filling the room and the soft bread reflecting the candlelight, a sumptuous dinner was already in place. Despite the lack of heat or light, everyone was enjoying dinner and conversation. We all expressed our heartfelt gratitude to others. My daughter proudly announced that the thing she was thankful for was her mommy, which brought tears to my eyes. It truly was a day for which to be thankful.
After the party, I noticed a suitcase with a note on it under the dinner table. Puzzled and curious, I took up the note that read simply “Thanks for the giving.” Inside the suitcase were cards and encouragement like “Cheer up! Our troubles will soon be over. ” More than that, inside was money. I cried, my eyes misting and my mouth shivering slightly. It was enough to cover my electricity bill and save me from moving. To this day, I do not know who arranges this miracle. My daughter and I still live in the same house. I am living proof that one good turn deserves another.

We met at the Leeds Grenville SPCA.We were here to find the best fit for our little family of three. In my heart, however, I think I already knew which one was the right cat. Portia, a quiet brown tabby (斑猫), watched us with partially closed eyes, seemingly saying, “Take your time…” and I know it’s going to be me. As I neared her cage, one paw extended. Finally we decided to bring home a cat that day.
After a day or two of settling in, Portia became a sort of small and furry nanny to my kids. She would travel from room to room with us during the day, usually staying closest to my son. She wanted to sit where he sat, look out the windows from which he peered, and make courageous attempts to share whatever he was eating. At night, she would sprawl onto his lap during story time. We nicknamed her “Guardian Kitten” for the way she always wanted to be where he was, watching over him as if he were her own.
One day, I was gathering leaves while my child delighted in disturbing the piles. Portia was dozing on the porch, her cars sometimes shifting toward the sound of our voices. Then suddenly, from down the street, a desperate voice cried, “No! Come back here!” The phrase was repeated and the volume increased as the speaker drew closer. A Golden Retriever ignored his owner and reached my property first. In a split second it leaped over the low fence surrounding the front yard.
The dog rushed toward my son with boundless energy and body language that expressed that it wanted to play. “Puppy!” my son exclaimed, spreading his arms apart in a welcoming gesture. Unlike me, he was not aware that this dog would, at the very least, knock him down with its uncontained enthusiasm. And I wasn’t going to be able to close the space between us in time.

【答案】One possible version:
When I was wondering how to protect my son, a scream erupted behind me. It was from Portia. She flew from the porch in a blur of brown and black stripes, landing between the dog and pared to the fully grown dog, Portia was tiny, but her outrage compensated for that. Every hair on her body was raised. Her back was arched and sharp teeth were revealed. She screamed again, claws extended as one paw exploded outward and struck the dog’s nose. She took a step back. Once more she closed the gap, claws ready to slice. The dog was a bit frightened and retreated. Hissing and striking, she successfully drove the Retriever out of the yard.
After a while the owner arrived, out of breath. Seeing my son was safe and sound, he was relieved. A bit embarrassed, he apologized to me earnestly while taking hold of his pet’s collar before returning home. Portia watched with dismissive eyes until they rounded the corner and disappeared. I stroked her with affection and gratitude for her heroic act. She was definitely a good guardian and beyond compare. Also, her certainty toward us and the way she became a part of our family encouraged me to feel as if there was a kind of destiny to this encounter.

One of my teachers once asked my class what our favorite memory was. My answer, however, invited giggles and hesitant smiles. Why Because I felt the best when I first learned how to ride my bike-at thirteen. I didn’t mind my classmate’s stares and laughter, because I knew there was more to the story.
My sister and I shared a typical sisterly relationship: We couldn’t stand each other. Or, to be honest, she couldn’t stand me. I admired her. Her personality was the definition of cool. My clothes were mysteriously inclined to look like hers, and even my words tended to mimic(模仿) those I heard from home. Many times, I even wanted to literally follow my sister, crying every time I was banned from attending movies with her. Needless to say, I was a brat (淘气鬼) and an annoyance to her. Any sort of conversation we had was usually reduced to fighting, and try as might, my sister had an extra six years worth of insulting (侮辱的) vocabulary (which meant she usually won). After a while, I stopped trying to impress her and learned to be totally indifferent; perhaps the silent treatment would get more approval. I was wrong. We soon fell into a sad pattern-I avoided her, she ignored me, and deep inside, it hurt. So that’s how it was between us. Indifferent or hostile (敌对 的), she was only a sister in name. I truly believed that we would forever be apart, two housemates without conversation, two strangers without warmth. And nothing more.
I still remember the day I learned to ride a bike. I had received the bike that day, which was great, until I realized I had no idea how to ride it. My mom had long abandoned any attempt to teach me; I had proved to be a panicky, frustrating student.

【答案】范文
I couldn’t ride my bike, and on that day, it was no different. I was practising riding in a park. I struggled, but in vain. “I’m so stupid!” I murmured to myself. Overwhelmed by a sense of failure, I burst into tears. Suddenly, a familiar voice came, “You’re a noisy girl! What happened ” I stared at my sister with tears in my eyes. To my surprise, she lifted the bike up, saying, “Let me teach you!” Then she patiently told me how to keep a balance while riding. She encouraged me to have another try and promised to give me necessary help.
My sister never once let me fall. She helped me with my bike like a protective umbrella and inspired me. Little by little I could keep my balance and my fear disappeared. Eventually, I could ride the bicycle without my sister’s aid. “Congratulations!” my sister called to me. Not until that moment did I realize my sister’s hidden love for me. I got off the bike and ran to hug her tightly, conveying my gratitude. Since then, we’ve always kept a close relationship.

It was Lauren’s birthday and she told everyone in our class that there would be a magician. I really didn’t want to go because I always felt very nervous and scared if I had to go anywhere there would be lots of people (like basically everywhere). Also because the day before my dad had told me that sometimes magicians cut people in half. I cried a lot when we got there so Mum said I could stay next to her.
But when the magician got there we all had to go and sit down on the floor to watch the magic. He said “Hello, boys and girls! I’m Magic Andy!” in the loudest voice ever. Then he made everyone shout “Hello, Magic Andy! ”at him again and again, louder and louder, only I couldn’t open my mouth to say anything so I couldn’t join in.
Then Magic Andy said, “Now, who would like to be my special magical assistant ” And straight away I thought, Not Me. I don't like standing up in front of people, I don't like anyone looking at me, and I had decided by then that I didn't like magicians very much either. So everyone put their hands up apart from me. And it was a bit like being in An Actual Nightmare (噩梦) because Magic Andy did something I thought was against the law - he picked me to be his volunteer. The only person without a raised hand who really did not want to be his volunteer.
Everyone turned and stared, and I felt like they were playing a trick on me or something, because I had accidentally volunteered myself by Definitely Not Volunteering. I felt hot and dizzy and I couldn't move my head to see if Mum was behind me. I was frozen to the spot but someone helped me up to the front and everyone was clapping.

As I stood on stage, I felt extremely nervous. My heart pounded against my chest like a wild drum. Magic Andy gave me a magician’s hat and told me I would help him with his disappearing act. I was so nervous that I almost dropped the hat, but managed to put it on my head. I held my breath and closed my eyes tightly, afraid of what was to come. When I opened my eyes again, I was relieved to see that I had not disappeared- just the top hat had disappeared! A sense of excitement rushed through me.
Magic Andy continued with more tricks and I slowly began to relax. I found myself laughing and clapping along with the audience, enjoying the show. When it was over, Magic Andy approached me, saying that I was a great assistant and that I should try doing magic tricks of my own. I couldn’t help but feel proud. As we left, I felt a newfound confidence in myself. I was no longer the shy and nervous person I had been before. Magic Andy had not only put on a fantastic show but had also helped me to overcome my fears.

When I was a kid in Pennsylvania, my family rehabilitated (康复治疗) wild animals. I grew up with raccoons (浣熊) and a fox running around the house. We would go travelling to Bermuda and I would watch the whales off the shore. I fell in love with them and wanted to know more about what they got up to underwater. Now I’ve been studying whales for more than 30 years and am the president of the Center for Cetacean Research and Conservation.
In 2017, I was on a boat around Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, working on a film about whale conservation. The crew wanted to get more footage (镜头) of me in the water with the humpback whales — I often slip in quietly to record their behaviour for research. Seeing a couple of humpbacks in the distance, I slid off the boat wearing a snorkel mask and a GoPro, and swam towards them.
As I was approaching, one of the male humpbacks came right up to me, nuzzling (用鼻爱抚) me with his head and pushing me through the water. I felt a rush of pleasure mixed with fear. I tried to keep calm, never taking my eyes off him. Then the whale swam underneath me and lifted me out of the water on his flipper (鳍). I signalled to the boat, then — swoosh — I was pushed back under.
After seven and a half minutes of being pushed around by the humpback, I saw what I thought was a second, smaller whale. But then I noticed the tail — whales move theirs up and down, and this one was moving side to side. I realized with horror that it belonged to a huge, 18ft tiger shark! Tiger sharks are known to attack people, sometimes fatally (致命的).

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The shark had arched its body in attack mode. I yelled out to the boat but, before I knew it, the whale had positioned me on the front of his head and was gracefully racing through the water. It was terrifying and yet peaceful. Within 10 minutes, he had safely returned me to the boat and out of the shark’s way. I think the whale had seen the shark and was trying to push me away from it. My emotions were high by the time I took off my mask and I felt love, concern and care from the whale.
I told the whale that I loved him and thanked him as he was to swim off. He looked me in the eye. I slid overboard and swam towards him; I rubbed his face and he extended his pectoral fin. I swam back to the boat and he stayed around for about 20 minutes after I got back on it. Then he disappeared underwater. It was a touching moment. I gasped in relief and then proceeded to sob, overcome. I felt more motivated than ever to protect these beings.

Wally, my goldendoodle, has come to work with me every day since the start of the pandemic. He was there on the morning this February when a colleague came into my office and said, “The dog resort’s on fire.” My initial reaction was disbelief. I know the resort well — it’s just across the road from my office and offers daycare and boarding services for pets. Wally had stayed there when he was a puppy.
I got up from my desk, and thought, “OK, Wally, you’re staying here.” He gets anxious when I leave, so I shut the door behind me.
It was a surprisingly nice day for that time of year in Seattle, but as I got outside I saw the big plume of grey-black smoke above us. You could smell it, too. The smoke was barrelling out (涌出) from what looked like the middle of the single-storey warehouse-style building. I later found out the fire had been sparked in a dryer vent, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.
By that point, the firefighters were at the scene. There was so much noise. Suddenly it hit us: we’ve got to get the dogs out. A handful of colleagues, along with people from other nearby businesses, made their way to the building and started grabbing dogs that were being herded (聚集) to the entrance by the firefighters inside.
Our offices have a big gated yard, so we decided to get them in there first. We would pick them up and give them attention. We each had a different role. Some were to help secure the yard with plywood so the dogs couldn’t escape while others were to comfort them as most of the smaller dogs were scared.

【答案】范文
We tried to catch the running dogs as fast as we could. It was incredibly frantic. We were lunging to grab a collar or get any kind of hold on them, then guiding them across the road. Some of them thought we were trying to play with them a bit, so it was a struggle. Some dogs can be very sensitive, but luckily no one got bitten. It took about three hours and we eventually got them all into the yard until the rest of the owners could pick them up.
It seemed much more emotional for the owners. The fire was on the news; people were pulling up and leaving their cars in the middle of the road to hop out and search for their dogs. When they got to our fence and saw them, there were tears. People dropped to their knees with joy, knowing their dog was safe. When I got back to Wally in my office, it was very emotional seeing him again. He gave me so much love and made the whole episode feel rewarding.

Sue was 83 years old and lived by the ocean shore in a big beautiful house. She wished her son Steve would visit her, even if for only a day. Of course, the young man had a family of his own now, a darling little daughter Eva, and a business to take care of. Steve got on video calls with Sue every other day. However, Sue thought of her son and granddaughter, wishing she was with them. One day, Sue heard sounds from the neighboring house. Sue looked through the window and was delighted to see that she had new neighbors.
One morning, when Sue woke up and walked along the shore, she heard the sounds of water being splashed and the sound of children laughing wildly. She followed the sound and was concerned on finding the twins from the neighboring house standing, knee deep in ocean water. Something didn’t feel right. “Why would anyone leave their kids unattended on the shore ” Sue thought. She grabbed the kids’ hands and walked them to their home. As Sue opened the door, she found the young mother lying unconscious on the kitchen floor. Sue didn’t waste a second in calling 911.
The first responders managed to revive (恢复) her consciousness on the spot. “My boys! Ralph! Ray!” the woman cried out to her kids as the ambulance took her away. Sue said, “Don’t worry. Everything will be alright. I’ll take care of your sweet boys.” She kept her promise and looked after the kids like a grandmother. She took Ralph and Ray in and let them sleep in the bedroom that was specially made for her granddaughter Eva.
It was during these days that she knew that the boys’ father died of illness. Sue knew that the neighbor, Selina, had been trying to make ends meet by selling sweaters and socks that she knit. Looking at Selina’s children eat and drink with such joy, she realized how much she longed to see her little Eva. By the time Selina came home from the hospital, the kids had already started calling Sue “Grandma”.

Selina was very moved and struggled to find the words to thank her elderly neighbor. Sue hugged her and said there was no need to feel indebted to her. “Your kids have ended up making room in my old heart. This house is yours as much as it is mine, darling,” Sue said. That was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Sue and Selina. Sue looked after the kids while Selina went to a new job she had found, and Selina took care of Sue like her own mother.
Paragraph 2:
One Thanksgiving, when Sue and the Selina were talking, Sue’s door was knocked. It was her son Steve and her granddaughter, Eva! Steve thought it would come as a surprise for his mother. However, Steve was speechless, looking at the amount of joy and love around the house. Seeing his mother happier than she had been in years, Steve felt a little guilty for not giving her this happiness sooner. Steve made himself a promise: To become another source of love, belonging, and happiness in his beloved mother’s sunset years.

Sam, Wayne, Tim and Will were classmates. They loved music and formed a band in their high school. Although after graduation they met each other less and less, their friendship remained deep.
Now, when they were in their 60s, they decided to gather in a park to give a performance in memory of their good days. That day, when Sam, Wayne and Tim arrived there, they received a message from Jenny, Will’s wife. Once reading it, they hurriedly drove to Will’s house, where they found Will was sleeping after taking medicine. The tall and handsome man was weak and thin, which moved them to tears. And that day, they found out the whole story of Will’s illness from Jenny.
“Will’s heart condition has been worsening for a long time,” Jenny said. “Doctors said without an operation he would die six months later. But the operation costs $20,000. Now, after all the treatments, we don’t have that kind of money anymore.” Sam, Wayne and Tim comforted her and immediately made a plan to help Will.
The next day, they gathered early in a park, two blocks away from their high school, and put up a poster: “Playing for Will”. Then, they stood there for hours, playing song after song. Moved, many passers-by listened and left coins and bills.
But by the third day, the three men found it hard for them to support long time of performing. “Alright,” Sam said, “we’ll do several more days of this. Then we should rethink our plan.”
Just then, a little girl pointed at the poster of Will and said excitedly, “That’s Mr Schumer!” Surprised Sam asked how she knew him. “He was the best music teacher we had in school! He once taught us rock music and even helped us build a band!” the girl smiled. And she continued, “Are you his friends When did he begin being sick And did he get better from his sickness ” When the nine-year-old girl, Harriet, learned about her favorite teacher’s condition and his three old friends’ idea of performing on the street, she was lost in thought and wanted to do something.
After saying goodbye to Sam, Wayne and Tim, Harriet returned to school.

【答案】
After saying goodbye to Sam, Wayne and Tim, Harriet returned to school. However, she couldn’t get it out of her mind, she was determined to do something to help her teacher. She told her classmates the story of the four old friends and Will’s illness, hoping that they could actively spread this story to attract more students to support the band’s performance. Then she invited Sam, Wayne and Tim to perform in front of the school gate because there were more people, which meant more support and donations. Besides, she joined the band herself, playing song after song when these three old men were tired.
Seven days after performing in front of their school gate, Harrie’s band raised $25,000. What an unexpected result it was! With enough money, they paid for Will’s life-saving surgery. The doctors were highly qualified, and the surgery was very successful. Will soon recovered smoothly. Will and Jenny were very grateful to their three friends and Harriet. After that, there was another jamming session at the school gate. Only this time, there weren’t just three happy old men reminiscing the old days; there were all four. It seemed like yesterday once more.

Finding the Real Me
I had thought losing my job was the worst thing that had ever happened to me. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Losing my job was not the end of who I was but literally the beginning of discovering the real me.
It started out as one of the best days of my life, and certainly, of my career. My staff and I had been named the number one unit in our company, and I was taking them out for a celebratory lunch. Lunch was fun, the food was excellent, and the friendly atmosphere at the table made me smile. The weather was crisp, cool and sunny. I thought to myself “It just doesn’t get any better than this.” It was a perfect day!
Then came the teleconference at two o’clock as usual.
“Er, if you... if you are willing to move ” stuttered our associate director, voice trembling, “and if you cannot move, you will be given a severance package (遣散费), and ...”
How could this be happening I felt numb, my world slowly coming to an end. My husband and family comforted me, but I was scared. Financially, I knew we would be okay. But I had worked full-time my whole life and it had become my identity — who I was and how I defined myself. I was a leader, and I felt, a good one. What would I be with that taken from me
After sitting around feeling sorry for myself, I just casually turned on the television. A program caught my attention — a group of volunteers were helping children and hungry people all over the world. It struck me! I felt guilty knowing that even though I had lost my job, we had plenty of good, healthy food on the table every night. The words spoken by a volunteer seemed directed specifically at me — The best way to be blessed and to forget about your own problem is to help someone else. Ashamed, I realized that I had been abandoned to self-pity when I had so much to be thankful for and to do — a loving husband, beautiful children, and family and friends who needed me.

Paragraph 2: The next morning, I announced to my family that I was going to start a cooking school for them.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I decided to cook a great meal for my family that night. Neatly dressed, I went out to buy some ingredients at our local grocery store. Back home, I put on my aprons and started cooking. I stirred and baked, humming to myself a little, feeling like my old self again. Oh! I had been so busy being a “career woman” that I had never shown my children how to make wonderful dishes! Saddened by this, I decided to use my unexpected free time to change all that.
(版本1) The next morning I announced to my family that I was going to start a cooking school for them. This was first met with groans from my kids, who all had busy lives and plans of their own. But I convinced them to give it a try. Under my guidance, each kid picked a dish to prepare for the meal. We even made extra food to share with friends and neighbors in our community. We laughed, talked, and shared stories. Witnessing their delight, I realized who I really was — a wife, a mother and a friend to those who deserved my time and affection. It was perfect!
(版本2) The next morning I announced to my family that I was going to start a cooking school for them. They fell into a brief silence but instantly burst into applause. My kids swung into action and, under my guidance, each picked a dish to prepare for the meal. We even made extra food to share with friends and neighbors in our community. Afterwards, cooking school continued each week. It became a time we all looked forward to — a time of laughter, love and learning. I realized who I really was — a wife, a mother and a friend to those who deserved my time and affection. It was perfect!

Walking on the street, the bitter cold of a December day in Washington, D.C. was ruining my mood. The temperature was below zero so I ducked into the subway station, hoping to get warm.
Warmth came to my body as I settled onto a bench with a cup of hot coffee. Now I was ready to relax and do some serious people-watching. I noticed a homeless man seated nearby. The pleasant smell of delicious food from the subway food court (美食广场) was tempting me to consider an early dinner. From the longing look in my neighbor’s eyes it was obvious that he, too, noticed the good smell. I wondered how long it had been since he had eaten anything, expecting he would approach me for a handout (施舍). But he never did. My head and heart were battling it out: the former telling me to mind my own business, and the latter urging me to make an immediate trip to the food court for him.
While this inner debate was fierce, a well-dressed young couple suddenly approached. “Excuse me, sir,” began the husband. “We just finished eating and our appetite wasn’t as big as we thought. We hate to waste food. Can you help us out and put this to good use ” The kind stranger handed a large container with food. “Thank you.” came the grateful reply. Feeling good about what I had seen, but disappointed by my own lack of action, I observed my neighbor’s response to his sudden good fortune.
He lifted the soup, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. It was obvious that he was going to enjoy this miracle meal. He opened mouth and suddenly, he stopped.
The reason for this unexpected behavior soon became clear. Entering the hall was a new arrival, in his seventies, hatless and gloveless. His lightweight jacket was a poor protection against cold. His face and hands were red and damaged. People around focused on him with pity and whispered at this sad sight.

【答案】One possible version
My neighbor was the only one taking action. Quickly pulling aside his miracle meal, my neighbor leaped up and guided the elderly man to share the seat. Numb with cold, the old man didn’t expected the invitation, moving clumsily. Hardly had he seated himself, my neighbor tenderly put his down jacket over the older man’s shoulders, slipping his arms into sleeves. Finally, he said “Can you help me out ” pointing to the meal and placing the steaming cup of soup in the stranger’s hands. Seeing this, my head and heart stopped battling and I had my decision.
Tears blurred my vision when I went to buy food from the food court. What my neighbour said exactly spoke my mind. With regret, I felt obliged to do the same. Respectfully and cautiously, I approached them with steaming soup and sandwich. People around cast an approving smile in my direction. “Can you help me out ” I asked. “Why not ” he added jokingly, “But only if you go halfway with me on that sandwich, which is too much for a man my age.” It wasn’t until that day that I truly learned the meaning of sharing. I left the subway station feeling warmer than I had ever thought possible.
