People from all over the world have different wedding traditions and marriage customs. The one thing that all wedding ceremonies commonly seem to have is the commitment (承诺) of love for all time during a public ceremony.
Everyone at a wedding hopes for great happiness between the wedding couple. Wedding traditions are usually a way of showing signs of the hope for great happiness. Some of these traditions are very interesting.
In Sweden, the traditional bride will wear three rings by the end of the wedding ceremony. The first is the engagement (订婚) ring that she entered the ceremony with. The second, the wedding ring, is added to the first. A final ring, however, is added as well. This ring is known as the “motherhood” ring. Wedding traditions in the Philippines, a dance which can last for hours. During the Philippines, guests pin (用大头针别住) money to the bride’s dress to pay for their honeymoon.

We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this spot in a small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.
“Look down, Elsa,” father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw the crisscross (十字形) of twisting, turning streets leading to the square. “See, my dear,” father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can’t get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another.”
Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the awful lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she could not believe the lunches were as bad as I said.
When I turned to father for help, he didn’t say anything. Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.
At school the next day, I secretly poured my lunch soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I asked our cook to serve it to mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She swallowed one spoonful and sputtered (喷溅出) “The cook must have gone mad!” Quickly I told her what I had done, and Mother stated firmly that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!
In the years that followed, I often remembered the lesson father taught me. I began to
work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible means to my goal. Father’s wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.
28.The author’s father took her to the top of a church tower to _________.
A.enjoy the beautiful scenery of the whole town

A.Do something delicious for lunch.
B.Taste her awful lunch.
C.Dismiss the mad cook.
D.Speak to the school about lunch.

A.the cook agreed to serve the soup to the writer’s mother.
B.the author’s mother was angry with the cook.
C.her father persuaded her mother successfully.
D.the method the author thought of was effective.
31.What did the author’s mother think of her lunch soup after she tasted it

【答案】28.C 29.D 30.D 31.C

An earthquake is literally an earth-shattering experience! There you are enjoying an afternoon nap, having a cup of coffee in the morning, or even sleeping on a cold winter night when — WHAM! —the entire crockery (陶器) shelf collapses, and all the plates and cups break into pieces. A painting on the wall nearly knocks you down as it falls.
What should one do in an earthquake The prime-time (黄金时间的) news gives no warning, nor is there a time of year, like the monsoon (季风) season, when an earthquake always occurs. Unlike a tornado or hurricane, there is no known way of predicting an earthquake.
Though about 500,000 earthquakes occur each year, only 100 of them cause damage! However, an earthquake can strike any time of the day or night, so it needs to be prepared for when you have the misfortune of being caught in the middle of one.
If you’ re indoors, stay indoors, unless you’re on the ground floor, where you can easily run outside. The best thing to do if you’ re indoors is to hide under a strong piece of furniture like a bed or desk. Do not head for the stairway if you’ re living on an upper storey, because stairways can collapse.
If you’ re driving, get out of traffic and stop on a wide and open road. Do not stop on a bridge, or in another case, under one. Stay inside your car until the shaking stops. Before you restart driving, look out for fissures (裂缝), breaks in the road, and bumps or cracks. Inside your home, be careful not to turn on the gas until you’ re sure the cylinder (气罐) is safe, and there is no leak.
Avoid using your telephone unless there’ s an emergency. You could be occupying lines that are needed by other people. Lastly, if you’re not trapped or seriously hurt, do not expect fire fighters, army or police to help you. They may be busy rescuing people in greater need than you!
32.What does the underlined word “collapses” mean in the first paragraph
A.Breaks out. B.Falls down.
C.Cuts down. D.Drops out.
33.From the second paragraph we learn that .
A.Monsoons usually come at certain time of the year
B.There are no known ways to predict hurricanes
C.There are warning signs before earthquakes strike
D.A tornado can come at any time, and is hard to predict
34.What should you do if you are on the first floor of a building
A.Stay inside.
B.Head for a stairway.
C.Run outside immediately.
D.Hide under a strong piece of furniture.
35.What does the passage mainly tell us about
A.How to predict earthquakes.
B.What to do during an earthquake.
C.The damage an earthquake can cause.
D.The factors that cause an earthquake.

34.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“If you’ re indoors, stay indoors, unless you’re on the ground floor, where you can easily run outside.(如果你在室内,就呆在室内,除非你在一楼,在那里你可以很容易地跑去外面。)”可知,如果你在一楼,最好立刻跑到户外。故选C。

I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall. I personally have hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place.
Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where you only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large and expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant selling me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could ring the number of my driver for me. She replied, still all smiles, “I’m sorry Sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remember my wife’s interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you’re in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn’t see me.
I waited in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if they will show kindness to me. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

【答案】参考范文:
That was when I saw a young mother with her two kids. She was talking on the phone, and her voice told me she was a gentle and patient lady. The two kids were neatly dressed and waited quietly beside her. This must be a nice family, I thought to myself. Therefore, I approached to make a request. But as soon as I said, “Excuse me madam,” she grabbed both her kids and went away. Did I look like someone trying to hurt people I felt my heart sinking horribly.
Finally a man wearing a cheap T-shirt and dirty jeans seemed to notice me. I didn’t know why but I just stopped him and made my request. I was expecting him to rush past but he immediately called the number of my driver and waited till my car came to be sure I was picked up, turned around before I could thank him adequately and was gone. Surprised by his kindness, I promised I would do likewise to strangers who sought my help.

This is said to show that marriage is about more than just love. It is about building a family.
Wedding traditions in the Philippines, a dance which can last for hours. During the Philippines, guests pin (用大头针别住) money to the bride’s dress to pay for their honeymoon.
A traditional Irish bride may wear a blue wedding dress — believing blue to be a lucky color. English Lavender (薰衣草) is often mixed with her wedding flowers. It is traditional for the bride to braid her hair (梳头发) — as it is considered a good way to bring luck to the new couple.

I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible means to my goal. Father’s wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.

An earthquake is literally an earth-shattering experience! There you are enjoying an afternoon nap, having a cup of coffee in the morning, or even sleeping on a cold winter night
when — WHAM!
