Three Books for A More Honest View of Parent
Nowadays, it seems there are two ways to write about parenthood. I am heartily sick of both. This year I’ve decided to hug books that are inspiring and honest, yet do not avoid the pleasures of parenthood.
Life Among the Savages Shirley Jackson price: $15
Shirley Jackson, author of one of the most amazingly sinister novels of all time and of the short story The Lottery, also wrote two charming novels about raising her four children in an old farmhouse in rural Vermont. In Life Among the Savages, Jackson’s humor is as thrilling as her horror, and her children seem never to inspire in her anything worse than a fond exasperation (恼怒) .
A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You Amy Bloom price: $13. 95
A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You contains one of the most absolute expressions of a mother’s love in fiction. Much of it takes place in the waiting room of a gender-reassignment surgeon. It’s about a woman who is determined to be the mother that her child needs her to be. In this collection ordinary women rise to the occasion demanded by motherhood. They make mistakes but they generall succeed in making up for them.
Family Man Calvin Trillin price: $ 18
In his memoir (回忆录) Family Man, Calvin Trillin writes with humor about his wife and daughters. He gives what I think is the single most useful piece of parenting advice “Getting advice on the best way to bring up children is like getting advice on the best way to breathe sooner or later you’re probably going to forget it and go back to your regular old in-and-out.” Trillin gives the impression of being the best kind of husband.
1. Which book tells a story of raising children in the countryside
A. The Lottery. B. Family Man.
C. Life Among the Savages. D. A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You.
2. What is Calvin Trillin’s Family Man all about
A. A humorous mother. B. An operation.
C. Offering advice. D. Being a kind husband.

Most people have already heard we are facing an era of massive species extinction, that we run out of insect pollinators (传粉者) for our plantations and that springs are silent now. It is also agreed that a diverse nature is essential for our economic and emotional well-being and for human health. But how to achieve this
Buildings produce dangerous emissions (排放物) polluting the air. The nation’s buildings are responsible for 40% of all US carbon emissions. Designing buildings that put the environment first is essential. Daniel Jaconetti, the National Sustainable Design Leader for the architecture firm HED tells Gb&d Magazine, “Our first responsibility is to educate and then to design for clients the best possible building that meets their needs.”
The best buildings are designed to be resilient (能复原的) , energy efficient, comfortable, and without poisonous chemicals. They are probably the ones-that make the most sense to people—being as efficient as possible. “You’re putting out fewer emissions.” Daniel Jaconetti tells Gb&d.
Eco-conscious design can be found-in a number of ways. The application of solar power is just one common design trend. Choosing eco-friendly building materials can also help. This can include a wide variety of materials, from bamboo to those recycled.
When looking for ways to cater to eco-friendly design, biophilia (热爱生物) has been used in architectural design to unite nature into the environment. With common elements of biophilic design in buildings including indoor trees and plants and living walls creatures, we can enjoy the various benefits associated with the presence of nature indoors. For already constructed homes, biophilic design element can help create an environmentally friendly atmosphere. Bringing in plants is just one major way to make an eco-friendly statement. Properly styling the greenery can be the difference between showcasing the tree itself and allowing it to complement the surrounding design.
8. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To introduce the topic of the text. B. To raise people’s awareness of pollution.
C. To call on people to protect wildlife. D. To draw people’s attention to emotional well-being.
9. Why is designing environmentally-friendly buildings important
A. We need new buildings to be comfortable. B. Buildings are to blame for serious emissions.
C. Buildings are where we spend most of our time. D. We need different buildings to cheer ourselves up.
10. Which of the following can describe best buildings
A. Luxury. B. Splendid. C. Eco-friendly. D. Life-changing.
11. What can you do with a constructed home
A Redecorate it. B. Give it a thorough clean.
C. Change its design style. D. Add some green plants to it.
A 9. B 10. C 11. D

But how to achieve this 故选A。

It’s the day of the big race. You’ve got your running shoes on and your starting number pinned to your tank top (背心装). You’ve trained for weeks for this marathon, but have you shortchanged yourself by not having a cup of coffee
Studies about coffee can be tricky. One week scientists find that coffee is bad for us, while the next week they announce it provides benefits. When it comes to coffee’s star ingredient—caffeine, the results are much clearer in relation to athletes: Caffeine improves performance. It is one of the few legal performance enhancers in the world. In studies, athletes who consumed caffeine before a race were able to go faster, last longer and recover more quickly than those who didn’t.
Researchers have found that caffeine causes muscles to use fat as fuel, rather than glycogen (糖原) stored in the muscles, which increases strength. Caffeine also cheers up muscles by releasing calcium stored within, which aids speed and endurance. And it affects how hard you think you’re working, so that you can run longer and harder without feeling exhausted.
You don’t even need much caffeine to get the results. Scientists estimate that between 1 and 2 milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of body weight will do the trick. More isn’t better. It’s possible to perform worse when you consume more than 9 milligrams per kilogram.
Caffeine can have detrimental side effects in people not used to it, most notably headaches. It is also discouraged for those with heart conditions or high blood pressure. In some runners, coffee and other caffeinated products can result in diarrhea (腹泻). For these reasons, it’s probably best not to drink your first cup of coffee the morning of a marathon. Instead, see how your body reacts during your training.
12. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. How researchers made the finding. B. How caffeine in coffee helps runners.
C. Why coffee is important to runners. D. Why researchers carried out the research.
13. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Beneficial. B. Unnoticeable. C. Efficient. D. Harmful.
14. What is the author’s advice concerning consuming coffee
A. Test its effect in training. B. Take more before a race.
C. Take some after a race. D. Never take any before a race.
15. Where is the text most likely from
A. A notebook. B. A diary. C. A magazine. D. A travel guide.
B 13. D 14. A 15. C
根据第三段“Researchers have found that caffeine causes muscles to use fat as fuel, rather than glycogen (糖原) stored in the muscles, which increases strength. Caffeine also cheers up muscles by releasing calcium stored within, which aids speed and endurance. And it affects how hard you think you’re working, so that you can run longer and harder without feeling exhausted.
It is also discouraged for those with heart conditions or high blood pressure. (最明显的是头疼。对于那些有心脏病或高血压的人来说也是不鼓励的)”可推断上文意思是咖啡因会对不习惯咖啡因的人产生有害的副作用,所以detrimental意为“有害的”,和harmful同义,故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“For these reasons, it’s probably best not to drink your first cup of coffee the morning of a marathon. Instead, see how your body reacts during your training. (由于这些原因,最好不要在马拉松比赛的早晨喝第一杯咖啡。相反,看看你的身体在训练过程中是如何反应的。)”可知作者建议可以在训练中测试咖啡的效果。故选A。

What happened ” In response, you could say, “Oh, nothing serious. We are fine.” This will let them know you are doing fine.(例如,你所爱的人可能会问,“嘿! E项“Use this way when the other person is a loved one.(当对方是你所爱的人时,请使用这一策略)”承上启下,句中“this way”指代上文所述策略。

It is hard not to desire victory in all your efforts when the world seems so competitive and especially if you’re a boy growing up with those values. A boy grew up in a similar environment where winning was all that was valued and he longed to succeed. The boy was good at running, so he called everyone in the nearby villages for a race. A large group of people came to see this exciting event!
The boy had been training hard for this race. He ran among the strongest boys from around the villages and it looked like heat on a finish line, but the young boy came out victorious! The crowd went wild with delight as they cheerfully waved banners(横幅) praising him. The boy loved the attention. It made him feel happy.
There were several types of races, sprint, long distances, relays etc. The boy was unbeatable in all the races he competed in. The crowd loved him even more after each victory; they clapped with excitement. The boy felt very proud of his accomplishments.
But among the crowd was a wise older man who did not seem as impressed with the boy’s victory as the rest. Just as the boy thought all the races for the day were over. The old man shouted from the crowd, “there is one more race left—the most important one.” The boy was surprised by the additional race, but he was confident he could win any race.
The old man brought two new competitors for the boy a blind man and a weak old lady. “What type of race is this I can easily win them.” the boy exclaimed. “The most important one,” said the old man. So, the boy ran the race as he knew he would win this time too. When the boy crossed the finish line, the blind man was still at the start and the old lady had just started to move. The boy raised his hands after his victory, waiting for the familiar cheering.

All three of you finish together this time.” Still confused, the boy agreed to take another race.
The boy raced again. But he guided the blind man, supported the old lady and walked along with them this time. Finally, all three crossed the finish line together. The crowd cheered and clapped, which may be louder than any earlier. The boy was confused. Who was the crowd cheering for All three of them finished the race together. Again, he asked the old man, “who is the winner of this race Who is the crowd cheering for ” The wise old man put his hands around the boy’s shoulders and answered, “Boy, You have won much more in this race than any other race you have ever run.”

Three Books for A More Honest View of Parent
Nowadays it seems there are two ways to write about parenthood.

C. Buildings are where we spend most of our time. D. We need different buildings to cheer ourselves up.

A. Luxury. B. Splendid. C. Eco-friendly. D. Life-changing.
11. What can you do with a constructed home
A. Redecorate it. B. Give it a thorough clean.

The old man brought two new competitors for the boy, a blind man and a weak old lady.
