Well,a mixed picture over the next few days.Today in Britain, very wet and windy. You can see from the satellite picture that the highest temperatures,as they so often are,are in the southern parts of Europe, where it is also quite dry. It’s going to be quite cold over northwestern parts of Europe. It will be rainy but in the south there will be the best of the sunshine. And pretty good but cool in the eastern parts of Europe, too.
Now let’s look at tomorrow’s weather. It will be very much the same in the south except that the rain is starting to push up into the northern parts. It will stay fine in Eastern Europe.
But still wet and windy in many northwestern parts, and a bit cool, too.

(2022·广东省普通高中高三阶段性质量检测)In May this year, as part of our 150th anniversary, we asked readers aged between 18 and 25 to enter an essay competition. The task was to tell us, in no more than 1,000 words, what scientific advance they would most like to see in their lifetimes, and why it mattered to them.
The response was phenomenal: we received 661 entries. Some entrants hoped that science would make their lifetimes much longer than they can currently expect. Many looked forward to work that will end climate change. Others wanted to see advances in our understanding of human history, crop growth, space exploration, and medical technologies. The ideas were inspiring.
The winner is a compelling essay by Yasmin Ali, a PhD student at the University of Nottingham, UK. Ali submitted a piece on Beethoven, her brother's hearing loss and the science which she hoped would one day cure it. It stood out to the judges as a reminder of why many scientists do research: to make the world better tomorrow than it is today.
All essays were judged by a group of Nature editors. The top ten submissions were then ranked by three members of a separate judging group: Magdalena Skipper, editor in chief of Nature; Faith Osier, a researcher; and Jess Wade, a physicist. All submissions were kept anonymous throughout the process.
We also selected two runners up (非冠军的获奖者). Physicist Robert Schittko at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, proposes that nuclear fusion (核聚变) could offer a solution to the climate crisis, in a piece that effortlessly mixes grand ambition with gentle humour. And chemist Matthew Zajac at the University of Chicago in Illinois wrote a powerful personal account of why he wants to see advances in the field of same sex reproduction.
The results show that today's young scientists have a wealth of ideas, talent and conviction that research can transform their world. We look forward to seeing what they do next.

(2023·辽宁省凌源市高三抽测)One of the important, but seldom discussed, problems in healthcare reform is how to take care of our aging population as people continue to live longer. According to a new study from the MacArthur Research Network on an Aging Society, by 2050 Americans may live 3.1 to 7.9 years longer than the government expects. That would mean women would live 89 to 93 years and men 83 to nearly 86 years. The researchers base their conclusion on “rapid advances in biomedical (生物医药) technology that delay the start and progression of major deadly diseases or that slow the aging process.”
While this is good news, especially for the young, the life expectancy, which is in excess of (超过) the government's estimates, would raise costs sharply for Medicare and Social Security. If the study's predictions are accurate, the total cost for those two programs through 2050 could be between $3.2 trillion and $8.3 trillion higher than the US Census Bureau (人口普查局) and the Social Security Administration currently expect.
And that's only the beginning. With anticipated scientific breakthroughs in coming decades, people could eventually live to 150 years of age, says Dr Steven Joyal, an official of the Life Extension Foundation (LEF), a nonprofit organization that promotes research on how we can live longer and healthier. The MacArthur paper, in fact, says that some experts believe the average life expectancy could hit 100 by 2060.
What's more, Joyal says, the conquest (战胜) of disease and the slowing of the aging process will lead to a sharp decline in disability, allowing people of advanced age to function as well as they did when they were much younger. “In other words, a 90 year old person could have the same mental and physical capacity as somebody 40 or 50 years old.”
根据第一段第二、三句“According to a new study from the MacArthur Research Network ... live 89 to 93 years and men 83 to nearly 86 years.(根据麦克阿瑟研究网络关于老龄化社会的最新研究,到2050年,美国人的寿命比政府预计的要多3.1到7.9年。这意味着女性将活到89到93岁,而男性将活到83到86岁。)”可知,这项新的研究表明,到2050年的时候,美国人的寿命会比现在更长。故选A。
根据第一段最后一句“The researchers base their conclusion on ‘rapid advances in biomedical (生物医药) technology that delay the start and progression of major deadly diseases or that slow the aging process.’(研究人员的结论基于‘生物医药技术的快速发展,这些技术可以延缓重大致命疾病的发生和发展,或延缓衰老过程。’)”
根据第二段第一句“While this is good news, especially for the young, the life expectancy, which is in excess of (超过) the government's estimates, would raise costs sharply for Medicare and Social Security.”

Animals can adapt quickly to survive unfavorable environmental conditions. Evidence is mounting to show that plants can, too. A paper published in the journal Trends in Plant Science details how plants are rapidly adapting to the effects of climate change, and how they are passing down these adaptations to their offspring(后代).
Plants are facing more environmental stresses than ever. For example, climate change is making winters shorter in many locations, and plants are responding. “Many plants require a minimum period of cold in order to set up their environmental clock to define their flowering time,” says Martinelli, a plant geneticist at the University of Florence. “As cold seasons shorten, plants have adapted to require shorter periods of cold to delay flowering. These mechanisms allow plants to avoid flowering in periods when they have fewer opportunities to reproduce.”
Because plants don’t have neural(神经的) networks, their memory is based entirely on cellular(细胞的),molecular(分子的),and biochemical networks. These networks make up what the researchers call somatic memory(体细胞记忆). “It allows plants to recognize the occurrence of a previous environmental condition and to react accordingly,” says Martinelli.
These somatic memories can then be passed to the plants’ offspring via epigenetics(表现遗传). “Several examples demonstrate the existence of molecular mechanisms modulating plant memory to environmental stresses and affecting the adaptation of offspring to these stresses,” says Martinelli.
Going forward, Martinelli hopes to understand even more about the genes that are being passed down. “We are particularly interested in decoding the epigenetic alphabet without changes in DNA sequence(序列),”he says. “This is especially important when we consider the rapid climate change, we observe today that every living organism, including plants, needs to quickly adapt to survive.”
【答案】D B A B
32.What adaptations have plants made to shortened cold seasons
A.They have shortened their flowering time.
B.They have got more chances to reproduce.
C.They have avoided flowering in cold seasons.
D.They have adjusted their environmental clock.
根据第二段中的“For example, climate change is making winters shorter in many locations, and plants are responding. “Many plants require a minimum period of cold in order to set up their environmental clock to define their flowering time,”…(例如,气候变化使许多地方的冬季缩短,植物正在做出反应。“许多植物需要最短的寒冷时间,以便设置环境时钟来定义它们的开花时间,” ……)”可知,为了适应缩短的寒冷季节,植物会设置环境时钟来定义开花时间。故选D项。
33.What can we learn about somatic memory
A.It is entirely based on neural networks.
B.It can help the plants’ offspring to survive.
C.It can help relieve environmental stresses.
D.It disturbs the plants’ biochemical networks.
根据第四段首句“These somatic memories can then be passed to the plants’ offspring via epigenetics(表现遗传).(然后,这些体细胞记忆可以通过表观遗传学传递给植物的后代。”
34.What does the underlined word “modulating” mean in paragraph 4
A.Adjusting. B.Treasuring.
C.Recording. D.Sharing.
根据第二段中的“As cold seasons shorten, plants have adapted to require shorter periods of cold to delay flowering. These mechanisms allow plants to avoid flowering in periods when they have fewer opportunities to reproduce. (随着寒冷季节的缩短,植物已经适应了需要较短的寒冷时间来延迟开花。这些机制允许植物避免在繁殖机会较少的时期开花。)”可知,这些机制使植物能够调整自己在繁殖机会少的时期避免开花,这是植物调整适应环境变化的结果,划线单词所在的“Several examples demonstrate the existence of molecular mechanisms modulating plant memory to environmental stresses and affecting the adaptation of offspring to these stresses(几个例子表明,存在调节植物记忆对环境胁迫并影响后代对这些胁迫的适应的分子机制。)” 故选A项。
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Plants are smart about flowering time
B.Plants can also adapt to climate change
C.Environmental stresses challenge plants
D.Mysteries of plant genes are to be unfolded
根据首段中的“Animals can adapt quickly to survive unfavorable environmental conditions. Evidence is mounting to show that plants can, too.(动物可以快速适应,以在不利的环境条件下生存。越来越多的证据表明,植物也可以。)”并结合下文围绕该话题举例说明和分析植物能快速适应不利条件的原因可知,本文主要是陈述植物和动物一样能快速适应不利条件。故选B项。

(2021·山东省烟台市高三新高考适应性考试)Panic attacks are sudden, intense surges of fear, panic, or anxiety. __36__. Panic attacks are generally brief, lasting less than 10 minutes, although some of the symptoms may persist for a longer time. Here are a few tips for you to cope with panic attacks.
Deep breathing
If you're able to control your breathing, you're less likely to experience the hyperventilating (呼吸急促) that can make other symptoms—and the panic attack itself—worse. Focus on taking deep breaths in and out through your mouth, feeling the air slowly fill your chest and belly and then slowly leave them again. __37__.
Close your eyes
Some panic attacks come from triggers (触发物) that overwhelm you. If you are in a fast paced environment with a lot of stimuli (刺激), this can feed your panic attack. __38__. This can block out any extra stimuli and make it easier to focus on your breathing.
__39__
Mindfulness can help ground you in the reality of what is around you. Since panic attacks can cause a feeling of separation from reality, this can combat your panic attack as it is approaching or actually happening.
Use muscle relaxation techniques
Much like deep breathing, muscle relaxation techniques can help stop your panic attack in its tracks by controlling your body's response as much as possible. Consciously relax one muscle at a time. _40__. Techniques of this kind will be most effective when you have practised them beforehand.
A.Practice mindfulness
B.Get away from reality
C.They have physical as well as emotional symptoms
D.To reduce the stimuli, close your eyes during your panic attack
E.You can start with the fingers, and then move your way up through your body
F.These cannot only help you fall asleep, but they may also promote muscle relaxation
G.Breathe in for a count of four, hold for a second, and then breathe out for a count of four
CGDAE
36.C 根据设空处上一句“Panic attacks are sudden, intense surges of fear, panic, or anxiety.(惊恐症是指突然、强烈的恐惧、恐慌或焦虑。)”
G项中的“Breathe in”和“breathe out”与标题呼应。
根据设空处下一段“Mindfulness can help ground you ... as it is approaching or actually happening.(正念可以帮助你认清周围的现实。因为恐慌症可以导致一种脱离现实的感觉,这可以在它接近或实际发生时对抗你的恐慌症。)”可知,本段主要说的是正念的作用及练习正念的原因。因此A项(练习正念)符合语境。故选A。

Dear Aron,
I'm writing to share my visit to an Exhibition of Cultural Relics with you. Last Saturday morning, students in my class got to the local museum by bus. Upon entering it, we were received by the staff. A lot of valuable cultural relics made of bronze, jade and other materials, dating from the Shang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, were on display. It was a visual and brain shock. It was not until noon that we went back to school under the guidance of our teachers.
To be honest, the exhibition left an everlasting impression on my mind. I was amazed and proud to have seen the wonders that ancient China offered.
Yours,
Li Hua

[2023·海南省高考全真模拟]My wife, our two kids under 4 and I were in the post office a few weeks ago. We have to go there every month to pay various fees. I was being served when an old man in his eighties, with obvious, significant health issues, was waiting to pay his electricity bill. He was struggling to walk on a walking stick, and his hands and arms were shaking all the time. I knew by feeling that the old man was in trouble. After asking, I figured out that the old man's problem was that he was 20 cents short.
The lady behind the counter had the old man in such a state, looking for a further 20 cents, and he was shaking, obviously looking upset. But instead of letting the man go, she insisted that if his bill wasn't going to be paid in full, the electricity company would probably give a fine on his next bill for unpaid fees.
Hearing this, I got really upset. So I went over and asked the lady behind the counter to give ALL of his money back to the old man and I handed her my debit card and paid the bill for him.
The old man was asking “why are you doing this?” as he began crying. I told him because it was the right thing to do. He thanked me over and over and smiled at my two kids on his way out of the post office.
The best part of this event was that the old man walked out of the post office and straight to Woolies and bought a full basket of food, which he wouldn't have been able to buy had I not done that at the post office.

It happened that we met this old man again in our community. Both the old man and my family were very surprised. After a short chat with him, we found out that the old man lived in an apartment near our building. His children all worked far away out of town and they seldom came hack to see him except holidays. Unfortunately, the old man's wife passed away last year, and he had lived alone since then. We felt really sorry for him.
Our family decided to help improve the old man's situation. We visited him regularly and spared time to accompany him. At the same time, we did all kinds of housework for him. We helped him with washing, cooking, cleaning and so on. We often bought vegetables, fruits and food for him because he was unable to go out easily. Besides, we went to the post office to pay his bills for him. He didn't have to stand in line to pay his electricity bill in person! Seeing him live a easier life, we had a sense of achievement.

28.What does the new study show
A.Americans will live much longer by 2050 than they do now.
B.Great progress has been made in the US in public security.
C.Few people pay attention to the health care reform in the US.
D.Fewer Americans suffer from deadly disease now than before.
29.What probably helps American live much longer
A.Social security. B.Biomedical technology.
C.Healthcare reform. D.New research in health care.
30.What problem may a longer life expectancy in the US lead to
A.The aging process will speed up.
B.It adds to the chance of being disabled.
C.The old will have some mental problems.
D.It will increase public costs for the government.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text

32.What adaptations have plants made to shortened cold seasons
A.They have shortened their flowering time.
B.They have got more chances to reproduce.
C.They have avoided flowering in cold seasons.
D.They have adjusted their environmental clock.
33.What can we learn about somatic memory
A.It is entirely based on neural networks.
B.It can help the plants’ offspring to survive.
C.It can help relieve environmental stresses.
D.It disturbs the plants’ biochemical networks.
34.What does the underlined word “modulating” mean in paragraph 4
A.Adjusting. B.Treasuring.
C.Recording. D.Sharing.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Plants are smart about flowering time
B.Plants can also adapt to climate change
C.Environmental stresses challenge plants
D.Mysteries of plant genes are to be unfolded

Deep breathing
If you're able to control your breathing, you're less likely to experience the hyperventilating (呼吸急促) that can make other symptoms—and the panic attack itself—worse. Focus on taking deep breaths in and out through your mouth, feeling the air slowly fill your chest and belly and then slowly leave them again. __37__.
