Analysis of the text
【What】
The first part of the text is about the current situation of car use in the UK and the fatal impact of excessive car use on the environment while the second part is an introduction to five green travel suggestions given by experts.
【Why】
With the rapid development of society, people are becoming increasingly dependent on cars. Thus, the overuse of cars has brought huge problems to road traffic and the environment, especially due to the increasing number of deaths caused by traffic and air pollution. We, as human beings, must attach greater attention to this issue and make changes,which also constitutes the teaching purpose of this lesson Road to Destruction.
【How】
This text demonstrates the universality and authenticity through dialogue and first-person writing technique. A large amount of data is cited to prove the great harm when explaining the dangers of the excessive use of cars. The writing style of the text is quite colloquial, from which we can easily find that the sentence structure are simple and clear to comprehend. Hence, through unambiguous discussion and creative design of posters and slogans, students can not only take effective action to reduce the harm caused by the excessive use of vehicles but also cultivate their spirit of teamwork and cooperation as well as raise their cultural awareness of protecting the environment.
Analysis of the students
Students have high enthusiasm for learning English,whose English proficiency is relatively improved over time. They can think proactively and are good at asking questions. However, little background knowledge is known about the conditions of the use and the extent of the damage that vehicles have caused to the environment. Consequently, students will quickly grasp this factual information by reading the text.
Teaching Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Obtain factual information such as the presentation of data on the use of vehicles in the UK and the consequences of overusing cars through skimming and scanning;
2. Extract suggestions and benefits advocated by British environmental experts for green travel ;
3. Compose eco-friendly posters and slogans for less carbon footprint and a greener transportation via in-depth discussion.
4. Write a letter to the mayor of their own city with what have just been learned as an embodiment of citizens’ responsibility and internalization of the sense of value the text is delivering.
Teaching focus
After reading and discussing the current situation of the car use in the UK and the series of problems it brings, students are expected to improve their thinking quality, cultivate environmental awareness, and propose practical and feasible measures for the environmental issues in their own cities.
Teaching difficulties
Students may find it difficult to analyze comprehensively and objectively the factual situations and figure out effective measures to solve these problems, especially in realizing their personal responsibilities from their own standpoints.

Q: What would you do if you are stuck in a traffic jam Activity 1: Prediction Make a prediction on what can be mentioned in the text. Activity 2: Check your Prediction Activity 3: Divide the text into several parts Finish the multiple choices to find out the correct main idea to each paragraph. Create a scenario and introduce the topic. Summarize the main idea, and identify the structure.
Extract effective suggestions and benefits from the UK environmental experts on personal green travel. While-reding Activity 4: Figures VS Problems (Scan Part1 L12-19) Aided with the skill Builder: Tips on note-taking skills which can also be connected to the previous listening material about YiJiefang, who made contributions to tree-planting in the deserts of Inner Mongolia in Unit8 Green Living then complete the table. Activity 5: Find out the Problems Read part1(L1-19) Activity 6: Find out possible solutions Read part2 Activity 7: Read the last paragraph again and answer the question.( L46-49) Activity 8: Think about any added advice for how to give up cars: 1.Screen information and enhance comprehension. Internalize the knowledge and propose practical application.
Implement in practice and intrigue students’ creative thoughts on building up a new and green environment for our generation and the coming ones. Post-reading Activity 9: Make a poster for reducing air pollution caused by vehicles to achieve sustainable development. (Group discussion) Engage in intertextual reading and learn new knowledge. Apply all the knowledge gained in this text for further internalization.
