When I was 9,we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow,London on a gray January morning.Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me.Without my beloved beaches and endless blue-sky days,I felt at a loss and out of place.Until I made a discovery.
Southbank,at an eastern bend in the Thames,is the center of British skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing.I loved it.I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favorite:Safe.Safe meant cool.It meant hello. It meant don’t worry about it.Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam(横杆),I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up:Safe,man.Safe.A few minutes later, when I landed the trick,my friends beat their boards loud, shouting:“Safe!Safe!Safe!” And that’s what mattered—landing tricks, being a good skater.
When I was 15,my family moved to Washington.I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less welcoming.Within a couple of years,I’d given it up.
When I returned to London in 2004,I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there.I’ve traveled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear:tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters.Weaving among the kids who rushed by on their boards,I found my way to the beam. Then a rail-thin teenager,in a baggy white T-shirt,skidded up to the beam.He sat next to me.He seemed not to notice the man next to him.But soon I caught a few of his glances.“I was a local here 20 years ago,” I told him. Then, slowly,he began to nod his head.“Safe,man.Safe.”
“Yeah,” I said.“Safe.”

Born in a musical family in 1925 in New Orleans,Renald Richard spent his childhood filled with music. At the age of 13,he went to see a band perform at a church where he fell in love with trumpet. So,he started lessons on it,and later played it in the high school band. After high school,he was sent into military service and played his trumpet in the United States Navy Band. After ending up studying music at Xavier University of Louisiana,he played clubs on the famous Bourbon Street and also toured with many bands.
In 1954,Richard was approached by Jeff Brown, the manager of musician Ray Charles. He invited Richard to join Ray Charles’ new band.“To be selected by Ray Charles was an honor to me.Ray Charles was exacting,” said Richard,“He was a perfectionist and was rather demanding about his music.”
Renald Richard toured all over the South and West with Ray Charles.Sitting in the back seat of the car on the way to a concert,Richard wrote the song “I Got a Woman” for Charles, which became Ray Charles’ first number one radio hit.In 1954,Renald Richard left Ray Charles’ band. However,he stayed friendly with Ray Charles over the years. He became the high school’s band director in his hometown until 1962.Four years later,he moved again to New York City.Over the years,Richard has written many other songs that have been recorded by artists including Joe Turner, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley to name but a few.Living now in Southern Florida,Richard is still active at the age of 92.As you can see,Renald Richard’s musical days are by no means near an end.

Who is a genius This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.
Let’s state clearly:Einstein was a genius. His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more intelligent or creative than the rest of us And who are they
In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men,of European origin.Perhaps this is not a surprise. It’s said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women,or people of a different color or belief—they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.
A study recently published by Science found that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender are “really, really smart”.Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief:Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are “really, really smart”.Can our planet afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up It doesn’t take a genius to know the answer:absolutely not.
Here’s the good news.In a wired world with constant global communication,we’re all positioned to see flashes of geniuses wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors like gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of geniuses. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with “intelligence, creativity, perseverance, and simple good fortune, who are able to change the world”.
32.What does the author think of victors’ standards for joining the genius club
A.They’re unfair. B.They’re conservative.
C.They’re objective. D.They’re strict.
33.What can we infer about girls from the study in Science
A.They think themselves smart.
B.They look up to great thinkers.
C.They see gender differences earlier than boys.
D.They are likely to be influenced by social beliefs.
34.Why are more geniuses known to the public
A.Improved global communication. B.Less discrimination against women.
C.Acceptance of victors’ concepts. D.Changes in people’s social positions.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Geniuses Think Alike B.Genius Takes Many Forms
C.Genius and Intelligence D.Genius and Luck

A Few Tips for Self-Acceptance
We all want it...to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach. 36 Here’s a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.
37 Do not follow the people who make you feel not-good-enough.Why do you follow them Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs Know that your life is your own;you are the only you in this world.
Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made.We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. 38 You will make mistakes, time and time again.Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate response “That didn’t go as planned. But,I tried my best.”
Recognize all of your strengths.Write them down in a journal.Begin to train your brain to look at strengths before weaknesses.List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earn your degree, and you get out of bed today. 39
Now that you’ve listed your strengths, list your imperfections.Turn the page in your journal.Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don’t feel good enough. Now,read these words back to yourself. 40 Turn to the page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements.See how awesome you are
A.Feeling upset again
B.Where do you start
C.Nothing is too small to celebrate.
D.Remember,you are only a human.
E.Set an intention for self-acceptance.
F.Stop comparing yourself with others.

As a teacher,my daily routine includes driving to a new school almost every day so I’m usually unable to predict the day’s events, good or bad!
On one particular day,I was teaching in a very difficult class. Some of the schoolboys didn’t finish their homework on time and that really annoyed me.I was managing behaviour all morning and by lunchtime I knew I needed coffee to even consider surviving the afternoon. So on my lunchtime,I drove to a nearby plaza to get a cup of coffee. There I had a wonderful time and forgot the unpleasant experience in the morning.Upon returning to the car,I realized I had locked my keys and my phone inside!I had about 15 minutes to get back to the school which was a good 4-or-5-minute drive away.I considered rushing back, but it was winter, and I thought a dirty fall on ice would only make the situation much worse.
So I ran into a Mcdonald’s which was in the same plaza and asked the man at the counter to call me a cab.The man happened to be the manager of the restaurant.I briefly explained my situation to him,and I could tell by the look, that he empathized. He hurried to the back to use the phone while I paced in the restaurant.I had less than 10 minutes to get back to my school at this point.
The manager returned, only to tell me that the cab company had put him on hold and then the line got disconnected, and that he was now on hold again, but had not yet been able to request the cab yet.My expression,I am sure, began to resemble some combination of hopelessness and fear.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome. Now let me introduce my hometown to you.I hope you will enjoy the beautiful countryside with me as your guide.
My hometown is a very ordinary place,no different from any other small town in the area. There are about two thousand people living here, many of whom go to the big cities to do odd jobs. What then makes this place a famous resort You can find the answer in the beautiful scenery in the countryside. It is a place where you can see many tall trees, where wide roads run alongside big farms, and where a big river flows. You can see a lot of ducks on the river’s white sheet of water which opens out into a big bay by the sea.
Every morning,we jog, enjoy the fresh air and meet our neighbours on the roads.People who are fond of walking their pets will also be found along the roads in the morning, often in groups, talking pleasantly to their friends and neighbours. You can also see people involved in other recreation activities such as playing badminton, dancing and flying kites.
Besides these, some experts say there are many valuable minerals under the ground. They predict if some day we begin to mine our countryside,we will become richer and richer by exporting the minerals to other countries.I think many countries are bound to begin using these minerals soon.

When Seymour Kankel,10,was getting in the car to go to the summer camp in 2020,he wasn’t exactly keeping an eye out for bears. But there it was, about 30 meters away, going calmly out of a dumpster(垃圾箱).Different from Seymour, the bear wasn’t at all shocked to see him.Seymour immediately ran away.
Encounters like the one Seymour had aren’t that shocking.People and black bears are running into each other more and more. That’s partly because people are spending more time in wild areas—hiking and camping. They’re also living in areas near forests and mountains, areas where bears like to hang out.And the number of black bears has been growing since they were protected.
Black bears don’t usually bother anyone. But if a bear feels threatened,it might do something like a bluff charge. That’s when a bear runs towards a person but doesn’t attack.Even if no one is hurt,it can be frightening. And authorities may kill the animal in response.
People might be afraid of bears, but that fear goes both ways.Black bears living near people live in fear too, especially when they want to eat human leftovers(剩饭).They’re weighing the high-calorie food against the risk of encountering people.
One way to reduce contact with bears is to remove the fast-food option. The hardest part is convincing people to do that. They need to keep bird feeders out of reach. They mustn’t leave pet food behind. Most importantly, they need to lock up the trash.Bears are changing their own behavior to coexist with people and their activities. And people will need to do the same—even if it means just locking up their trash.
28.How did Seymour Kankel react when seeing the bear
A.He was too scared to move. B.He fled the spot instantly.
C.He remained calm as usual. D.He became curious about the sight.
29.What does the author mainly want to show in paragraph 2
A.Encounters between humans and black bears occur frequently.
B.Black bears and humans now live in harmony.
C.The number of black bears has been increasing.
D.Humans are taking up black bears’ habitat.
30.Why does a black bear perform such an act as a bluff charge
A.To get the leftovers. B.To attack the man.
C.To drive away the man. D.To expand its own territory.
31.How can people avoid encountering black bears according to the author
A.By avoiding going to the wild. B.By checking their trash carefully.
C.By putting away the black bears’ food. D.By moving away from where bears live.
D
Five years ago,French navy officer Jér me Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit(斑尾塍鹬),which flies about 14,000 kilometers, moving from New Zealand to Alaska.Chardon knew how hard the journey would be,as heavy storms hit Pacificisland communities frequently.Yet,bar-tailed godwits pass through the area uninjured.Chardon wondered whether learning how godwits navigate could help us avoid disasters.
This January,a team from France’s National Museum of Natural History(NMNH) began to test Chardon’s idea.Researchers led by Frédéric Jiguet equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting-edge animal tracking technology. They attached tags(标签) to the birds in French Polynesia. These tags send the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which sends the data back to scientists on Earth who can then follow the birds as they hunt for food, move and rest—all the while waiting to see how the birds respond to natural disasters.
The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear the low-frequency sound that humans can’t hear, and researchers believe it might be the most likely signal birds would use to sense disasters. In a 2014 study, scientists tracking golden-winged warblers in America found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to escape from an outbreak of tsunami that killed 35 people and cost more than one billion dollars. This showed they’d heard the storm system in advance.“Tracking that behavior of birds may help us develop an early warning system,” Jiguet says.
Bernard,a famous tsunami scientist, said,“Don’t overstress the tsunami warning aspect of this project, because most tsunamis are harmlessly small, and false alarms cause economic damage.” “Even if the attempt to develop a bird-based tsunami early warning system fails, the project will still help scientists protect birds. In that sense, the research has already yielded results,”Jiguet said.“The first season’s tracking data has become a useful clue for bird experts to protect these species among rising seas and the changing climate.”
32.What is the researchers’ purpose in tracking birds of different species
A.To learn more about their lifestyles.
B.To know their reactions to disasters.
C.To test an animal tracking technology.
D.To help them adapt to the local environment.
33.Why is the 2014 study mentioned in paragraph 3
A.To prove birds can sense disasters in advance.
B.To prove tsunamis are common in America.
C.To show humans can’t hear low-frequency sounds.
D.To show natural disasters cause severe damage to people.
34.What would Jiguet think of their research
A.Successful. B.Challenging. C.Rewarding. D.Meaningless.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.How are natural disasters posing a threat to society
B.Is it necessary to develop an early-warning system
C.Why do we need to prepare for natural disasters
D.Can birds give a clue to natural disasters

Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside,is absolutely terrifying. 36 However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water.By adopting a brace(支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.
Brace yourself for impact (撞击力).As soon as you’re aware that you’re going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle,so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the “ten and two” position.
Undo your seat belt. 37 Unfasten the children, starting with the oldest first.Forget the cell phone call.Your car isn’t going to wait for you to make the call.
38 Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window.A car’s electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water,so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don’t think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.
Break the window. If you aren’t able to open the window,or it only opens halfway, you’ll need to break it with an object or your foot.It may feel counterintuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car. 39
Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival. 40 While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you’re doing.
A.Open the window as soon as you hit the water.
B.Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.
C.It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually.
D.Such accidents are particularly dangerous due to the risk of drowning.
E.In conclusion,if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.
F.This is the first thing to attend to,yet it often gets forgotten in the panic.
G.But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.

It was a pleasant Sunday as John had a walk in his uncle’s garden. His parents had moved to London.
“Your final examination is just a few weeks away,” John’s father had said.“We want you to stay with Uncle Tim and Aunt Melanie, complete your exams, and then join us in London.” Uncle Tim was John’s father’s cousin. He had a dog called Oliver.
From the first day,John realized that Oliver was unhappy in the house.
He was not given his meals on time.Nor was he taken for a walk.“Your uncle bought Oliver so that the dog could guard his house.Actually neither he nor his wife loves him,” the gardener told John one day.John felt sad.At night he could hear Oliver crying in the cold.“Why don’t you make a coat for your pet ” John said.“He feels cold.” His aunt said impatiently,“I have more important things to do.”
One day John went out for a walk with Oliver when the sky suddenly got dark.Heavy rain poured down.John ran to take shelter in a sweet shop.It was only after a few minutes that he realized that Oliver was not with him.
“The storm separated us,” John said returning home.“I searched the entire place with the help of the sweet shopowner after the rain stopped, but I couldn’t find him.” Uncle Tim placed an advertisement in the local newspaper. After all,he had paid a lot of money for the dog and did not want to lose him.
A few days later,a middle-aged lady and her husband answered the advertisement.John’s uncle was away on a business trip,so John was sent to check on the dog.
“He is asleep,” the lady said.“Come and have a look.Ever since our dog died,we decided not to keep any pets and then suddenly...” Her voice was trembling(颤抖).“When seeing the advertisement, for a moment we thought of not replying,”the gentleman said.“My wife has become attached to the dog in just a few days.”

第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
On my first day of the senior high school,I asked an eleventh grader where my class was.And he told me it was “on the fourth floor, next to the pool.” I found out five minutes later that we don’t even have a fourth floor and there’s no pool either!Besides that,I didn’t have any trouble with the older kids.
I think the biggest differences between the junior and the senior high school are the homework load (工作量) and size of the school.I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours,so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 55,but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.
The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve prepared for the night before, gotten an A,and not remembered anything later.I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more.Don’t take easy classes just to have a simple year.If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful!
While drinking and smoking might be present in some junior high schools, they’re also around in senior high schools.I have a lot of friends who promised they’d never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you’re applying for (申请) a college. The “friends” who say you’re a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It’s hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but don’t follow their footsteps.Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.
21.What does the author think of the senior high school
A.There are very few activities.
B.It’s hard to meet new people there.
C.It requires hard work.
D.There isn’t enough time for homework.
22.The text is probably written by .
A.a senior high school student B.a chemistry teacher
C.a college student D.a sports player
23.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us
A.The trouble caused by drinking and smoking.
B.Students shouldn’t go to any party in senior high school.
C.Students shouldn’t lose themselves in senior high school.
D.The importance of making friends.

A year back I received a full scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work had paid off.My mom had spent a lot in my attending a private high school,so I made sure to push myself:I volunteered, got involved in various clubs, and graduated with honors.I was so excited to start a new chapter(篇章) of my life.I had totally packed two weeks before it was time to leave.
Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn’t like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life.Every night I would cry myself to sleep.I was so homesick and I didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart. To distract myself,I threw myself into my studies and I applied for a ton of jobs.In any remaining free time,I started forcing myself to the gym.I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn’t think how lonely I felt.
Soon after,I began to limit food, and then I became worse. Finally,I went to see a doctor. When the doctor weighed me,I was crazy about the number of my weight. So I continued to lower my goal, and convinced that controlling this number was the solution for my homesickness. But when I was told that I had no choice but to spend time on my studies,I quickly started recovery in my mind.
How could I do I told myself that school was what I was best at.I decided to get rid of my homesickness and took exercise actively. My first term of college had passed by at last and I had gotten straight A’s.That’s why I want to share my story—to help other students feel less lonely.

Researchers say spicy tomatoes could soon be on the menu thanks to the rise of gene-editing technology.
It’s not the first time that experts have claimed techniques could develop fruit with unusual features:scientists have already been looking at changing the color of kiwi fruit and bettering the taste of strawberries.
But researchers in Brazil and Ireland say such methods could also offer practical advantages, with hot tomatoes offering a new way of harvesting the pungent(辣味的) chemicals found in peppers known as capsaicinoids(辣椒素),which make food taste “hot”.
“Capsaicinoids are valuable. They are used as painkillers and there are some researches showing that they promote weight loss,” said Agustin Zsogon from a Brazilian university,a co-author of a new article arguing for the benefits of engineering hot tomatoes.
Writing in the journal Trends in Plant Science, the researchers say peppers are difficult crops to grow and low productive.Worse still,it is tricky to keep the pungency of the fruit stable.By contrast, tomato production is high and the plant is well-studied.“You could produce the capsaicinoids in a more cost-effective manner,” said Zsogon.
Tomatoes and peppers developed from a common ancestor, but separated about 19 million years ago.“All these genes to produce capsaicinoids exist in the tomato, they are just not active,” said Zsogon.“Using gene-editing technology,it is likely to switch these genes back on in tomatoes, making the fruit more special,”he said.
28.Why are the tomatoes made hot by the researchers
A.To test the gene-editing technology.
B.To improve the amount of the tomatoes.
C.To explore ways to harvest more capsaicinoids.
D.To make the tomatoes more delicious.

Are you addicted to computer games Do you stay up all night playing them Do you feel happy after you play computer games
There’s no doubt that the excitement of games these days makes them hard to put down.We are attracted by the choice when it comes to gaming:You can role play —creating your own fantastic characters and stories, giving you a chance to step out of everyday life into an imaginary world. And there are shooting games where you can let out your anger and depression in violent situations where you kill people with guns. You can get excited from the games.
However, can these kinds of games really be fun and can being absorbed in virtual reality be good for us Should we worry about their effects on our health Popular games like Grand Theft Auto have been blamed for everything from falling results at school to causing acts of extreme violence.Internet safety adviser,Alan MacKenzie, thinks “any people understandably will just think that a game is just a game, not realizing the exact content that’s in there”.He gives an example of the violence, which he says is “wholly inappropriate for anybody, not to mention children”.
Others will argue that gaming is a harmless form of entertainment. There is evidence that playing video games could actually be good for us.Some games like Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft are educational and using games certainly can help children learn good qualities.Studies have also shown that the skills used in playing games can cause growth in certain areas of the brain, the ability to think in 3D and even improve our eyesight.
Video game players are also no longer just simple creatures. For some, gaming is having a positive effect on their social lives with games like Halo and World of Warcraft often being played in groups. When your group works together to win the game, your sense of achievement is higher than when winning by yourself.
So every coin has two sides. It seems that today gaming isn’t just for game fans and if used in a proper way,we can all take part.If video games have two sides, what side do you stand by

36 Moving from high school into college can be especially difficult because of the freedom students experience in college along with a new set of expectations.
In high school, students usually live at home, and their parents take care of all their physical needs such as food and housing. 37 Parents are also there to offer help and make sure that the students’ homework is done.During the school day, students rarely have free time. They go directly from one class to another.Teachers are always around to tell the students what to do. 38 So students can often complete their homework and reading in a short time.
39 They may be responsible for shopping, paying bills, and doing laundry. They may also have to cook their own meals.Their parents are not around to help with homework or even to check if it has been done.Contrary to students in high school, students in college may have a lot of free time between classes, but must discipline themselves to use this time productively for homework and other assignments. 40
A.High school students have to bury themselves in piles of papers.
B.Finally, the work itself is not so challenging.
C.By contrast,in college, students often live away from home in dorms or apartments.
D.In college, students may apply to a bank loan and others will try to find part-time jobs.
E.Each new level of education brings new challenges and demands to students.
F.Most importantly, college requires a higher level of thinking and a lot more work than high school.
G.Students do not usually have to shop for their food, take time to pay bills,or even do their own laundry.

After being attacked by Hurricane Ida’s 150 mph winds and torrential rains, hundreds of thousands of Gulf Coast residents were left without power and fresh water this week as a 100-degree heat wave settled over the region.Ida smashed into Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane, ripping off roofs, knocking out transmission lines, flooding roads, and reducing some brick buildings in downtown New Orleans to rubble. At least eight people died in the storm and the toll is expected to rise as emergency workers search wrecked homes and businesses.
One of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the U.S.mainland,Ida brought a 5-to 12-foot storm surge that covered low-lying communities in southeastern Louisiana.Grand Isle is now “uninhabitable,” said Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng, with 3 feet of sand covering the entire barrier island and 40 percent of the buildings completely destroyed.
The storm caused a citywide blackout in New Orleans, but a Hurricane Katrina-level disaster was avoided there, thanks in part to the $14.5 billion spent on new levees, seawalls, and pumps after the 2005 storm.Experts are warning that Ida could worsen the Covid crisis in the Gulf Coast,as residents crowd together in homes and emergency shelters without immediate access to testing or medical care.ICUs in Louisiana,Mississippi, and Alabama hospitals were already near capacity before the storm hit.Nearly 1 million people are still without power across Louisiana, and authorities warned it could be weeks before electricity is restored.“If you have already evacuated,” said Gov.John Bel Edwands,“do not return here.”
24.Which of the following best describes Hurricane Ida
A.Mild. B.Destructive. C.Uncontrollable. D.Impressive.
25.What do the underlined words “the toll” mean in paragraph 1
A.The death number. B.The heat wave.
C.The wind speed. D.The citywide blackout.
26.What is one of the reasons for Grand Isle to be uninhabitable
A.The entire island is covered with sand.
B.It is one of the low-lying communities.
C.The residents there can’t wait to leave.
D.Over half of its buildings were in ruins.
27.What can be inferred about the attitude of Gov.John Bel Edwards towards the prospect of Louisiana
A.Ambitious. B.Undoubted. C.Indifferent. D.Unconfident.

By the end of the century,if not sooner, the world’s oceans will be bluer and greener thanks to a warming climate, according to a new study.
At the heart of the phenomenon lie tiny marine microorganisms(海洋微生物)called phytoplankton.Because of the way light reflects off the organisms, these phytoplankton create colourful patterns at the ocean surface.Ocean colour varies from green to blue, depending on the type and concentration of phytoplankton.Climate change will fuel the growth of phytoplankton in some areas, while reducing it in other spots, leading to changes in the ocean’s appearance.
Phytoplankton live at the ocean surface, where they pull carbon dioxide into the ocean while giving off oxygen. When these organisms die, they bury carbon in the deep ocean,an important process that helps to regulate the global climate. But phytoplankton are vulnerable to the ocean’s warming trend.Warming changes key characteristics of the ocean and can affect phytoplankton growth, since they need not only sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow, but also nutrients.
Stephanie Dutkiewicz,a scientist in MIT’s Center for Global Change Science, built a climate model that projects changes to the oceans throughout the century. In a world that warms up by 3℃,it found that multiple changes to the colour of the oceans would occur. The model projects that currently blue areas with little phytoplankton could become even bluer. But in some waters, such as those of the Arctic, warming will make conditions riper for phytoplankton, and these areas will turn greener.“Not only are the quantities of phytoplankton in the ocean changing,” she said,“but the type of phytoplankton is changing.”
28.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about
A.The various patterns at the ocean surface.
B.The cause of the changes in ocean colour.
C.The way light reflects off marine organisms.
D.The efforts to fuel the growth of phytoplankton.
29.What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Sensitive. B.Beneficial. C.Significant. D.Unnoticeable.
30.What can we learn from the passage

The Suez Canal(苏伊士运河),which connects the Mediterranean Sea(地中海) and the Red Sea,opened in 1869.It helps speed world trade between the East and the West. But the man-made waterway has also helped speed the rise of other things, such as non-native species, which have damaged the Mediterranean’s environment and caused native species to disappear.
The number of non-native species has risen since the Suez Canal was widened in 2015.The “New Suez Canal” has raised concerns in many Mediterranean countries.
Bella Galil is an Israeli biologist who has studied the Mediterranean for over 30 years. She noted that the widening and deepening of the Suez Canal had created a “moving aquarium” of species. These species could make coastal waters almost unusable for human beings.Galil believes the number of invasive species has reached 400,which is twice the number from 30 years ago.
Scientists in Mediterranean countries from Turkey,Tunisia to Lebanon share the same concern. But some Egyptians don’t consider the environmental concerns as serious. They said only 5% of the invaders are a problem and that invasive species can be helpful by “replacing species that are overfished”.They don’t think that the widening of the canal is responsible for the increase in invasive species;they say the increase was caused by rising water temperatures and wastewater from ships.
The Suez Canal Authority runs the canal.Canal officials say they are closely watching the movements of sea species. They say they are requiring ships to take action to avoid carrying species from one side of the canal to the other. And they are trying to keep salt levels high in the Bitter Lakes to block invasive species out.Galil, however, questions whether these will be enough to protect the native species.“One day we will wake up to a complete and irreversible(不可逆的)change and know that there was something we could have done about it,if only it had been done on time,” she said.
32.What does the first paragraph show
A.Seeing is believing. B.Man will conquer nature.
C.Let nature take its course. D.Every coin has two sides.
33.What does Galil say about the “New Suez Canal”
A.Its environment is worsening.
B.It connects Mediterranean countries.
C.It is widened to include more species.
D.It is to protect endangered native species.
34.What do some Egyptians disagree on
A.The results of overfishing.
B.The decrease of native species.
C.The cause of the increase in invasive species.
D.The meaning of the widening of the Suez Canal.
35.What is Galil’s attitude to the Suez Canal Authority’s action
A.Uninterested. B.Doubtful. C.Supporting. D.Understanding.

High on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau lies China’s “Water tower” Sanjiangyuan. 36 The three rivers:the Yellow River, the Yangtze River and the Lancang River, provide water for about half the population of China. However, human activities such as overgrazing(过度放牧) are putting this ecosystem at risk.
37 In 2016,the Chinese government established Sanjiangyuan National Park, which was a pilot(试行) program for China’s national park system. 38 Due to the progress made in the region,Qinghai held the first National Park Forum on Aug.19.
Sanjiangyuan National Park is a model of eco-protection. 39 For example,Herdsmen have given their grasslands to nature and resettled in urban areas. As for wildlife, they are monitored by field conservation stations to keep the environment in good condition.
The idea of a national park system is still new in China, but it must be realized. As President Xi wrote in the congratulatory letter to the forum,“Building an ecological civilization bears great significance in the development and progress of human civilization.”With great efforts, people may one day be able to enjoy themselves in the vast lands of Sanjiangyuan and run freely across the plains alongside nature’s animals. 40
A.Hopefully,though,we have realized the damage.
B.It’s home to the headwater of China’s three big rivers.
C.Unfortunately, the situation has got worse and worse.
D.It attracts visitors with its fantastic nature beauty and various wildlife.
E.The park has increased the area’s green coverage and attracted more wildlife.
F.Hopefully, the success of Sanjiangyuan will mark the start of a greener future.
G.The local government has different ways of slowing environmental degradation.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
What makes the sea turn red and causes thousands of fish to die As far back as anyone could remember, the blame was placed on the “red tides”.In 1947,scientists finally connected the red tides with a microscopic sea organism 56. (call) the dinoflagellate(腰鞭毛虫).
The dinoflagellate is so tiny 57. 6,000 of these organisms may be contained in 58.single drop of water. It stands on the borderline between plants and animals in its classification. It produces its own food,as plants do.But it moves 59. (free) and eats other organisms,as animals do.
Dinoflagellates are normally only one of the many kinds of organisms found in plankton.Plankton is the name given to all very small 60.(form) of sea life. However, when the air and water 61.(be) calm and warm, dinoflagellates multiply with an 62. (amaze)speed. The surface of the water appears 63.(cover) with a red carpet.
The dinoflagellates give off a poison. Many fish die.Their bodies are washed up on the beach.Beaches are not fit 64. any use.Fish that are not killed may become 65. (poison) to animals or people who eat mercial fishing comes to a stop.
As dinoflagellates consume all the food and oxygen in an area, they die. After a time, the sea returns to normal. But when conditions are right, the red tide comes again.

One morning,my family and I woke up and went to eat breakfast—until we heard barking and scratching at the door. When my mom opened the door,we saw a puppy. We looked around to see if we saw its owner, but there was no one.We took it inside and fed it.
Regardless of how badly I wanted to keep the puppy,we decided to look for the owner. We looked all day,but we failed. We talked about whether we should keep looking or if we should look the next day.We all agreed to look for its owner the next day.
So,the next day my family and I looked for the dog’s owner. It was so hard looking for its owner. We were looking for flyers(传单)that involved the puppy, but no luck.We wouldn’t have quit because it’s a puppy.
“We won’t stop looking,” my mom and dad said.We were going to take care of the puppy until we found its owner.
When we woke up in the morning,we went to a pet shop to buy the puppy some dog food. After that we went back home to feed the puppy the dog food that we had just bought. After we fed the puppy,we gave it a nice bath.It was so dirty that the fur was black and sticky, but after we gave it a bath,it turned white. And I noticed there was a collar on him, which said “Coby”.After we gave him a bath,we went to look for the puppy’s owner, but my mom stayed at home, and it was only my dad and me this time.
We continued looking more and more until we found flyers. We looked at it.
It said,“Lost Dog:Please Help if Found.” Then we looked at the picture;it looked exactly like Coby.We were all happy we found a flyer that was for Cody.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
There was a phone number on the flyer.
We found the lady’s house, and then we knocked on the door.

M:It has a lot of sugar.
W:But it says 100% pure orange juice on the container, and it’s a great source of vitamin C.
M:It’s true that orange juice has vitamin C,but look at the nutrition facts on the side.
W:Let’s see.Thirty grams of sugar.That’s not that much,is it
M:Well, for men,the recommended daily amount is thirty grams of sugar per day. So,that is almost all the sugar I should have, and that’s just one cup of juice.
W:I didn’t know that.Is it different for women
M:Yeah, about ten grams less.Plus, there is no vitamin D in it,and vitamin D is very important.Men need about forty grams, and women around twenty-five grams.
W:What is a good source of vitamin D
M:Plant foods and natural fruit.Stay away from noodles and bread, though.
W:Well,I don’t want this food to go to waste.I’ll eat it.How about some low-fat yogurt and blueberries for you

Thank you for attending this public hearing on our new Severe Weather Warning System.I’m Helen Dunley.First,I’d like to remind everyone that the main purpose of a weather warning system is to tell people outdoors to move inside. Now,it’s important to remember that we will test the system every Saturday at noon,so don’t worry about the noise at that time. It’s a good idea to go outside and listen when we test the system and make sure you can hear them in your neighbourhood.Remember that the loud noise is only one part of the warning system. The loud noise is activated by city officials after we receive warnings from the national weather service. In other words, you might hear a warning on the national news before you hear a warning here.If you do hear one, what should you do First, take cover. Our city doesn’t have public shelters,so go to the inside of any building, away from windows.Second, wait for reports on local media. Finally, stay indoors until you hear the all-clear signal.

第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
The wallet is heading for extinction. As a day-to-day essential,it will die off with the generation who read print newspapers. The kind of shopping—where you hand over notes and count out change in return—now happens only in the most minor of our retail(零售的) encounters, like buying a bar of chocolate or a bottle of milk, from a corner shop.At the shops where you spend any real money, that money is increasingly abstracted. And this is more and more true, the higher up the scale you go.At the most cutting-edge retail store—Victoria Beckham on Dover Street, for instance—you don’t go and stand at any kind of cash register. When you decide to pay,the staff are equipped with iPads to take your payment while you relax on a sofa, which is nothing more or less than excellent service,if you have the money.
But across society, the abstraction of the idea of cash makes me uneasy.Maybe I’m just old-fashioned.But earning money isn’t quick or easy for most of us.Isn’t it a bit weird that spending it should happen in half a blink of an eye Doesn’t a wallet—that time-honoured Friday-night feeling of pleasing, promising fatness—represent something that maters
But I’ll leave the economics to the experts. What bothers me about the death of the wallet is the change it represents in our physical environment.Everything about the look and feel of a wallet—the way the fastenings and materials wear and tear and loosen with age,the plastic and paper and gold and silver, and handwritten phone numbers and printed cinema tickets—is the very opposite of what our world is becoming. The opposite of a wallet is a smartphone or an iPad.The rounded edges, cool glass, smooth and unknowable as a pebble(鹅卵石).Instead of digging through pieces of paper and peering into corners,we move our fingers left and right. No more counting out coins.Show your wallet,if you still have one.It may not be here much longer.
21.What does the author intend to show with the example of buying chocolate and milk
A.Goods like chocolate and milk should be sold only in corner shops.
B.Now people seldom use cash unless making small purchases.
C.People won’t bother to buy daily groceries with cash.
D.The new generation no longer needs wallet.
22.What makes the author feel uncomfortable nowadays
A.Spending money is so fast and easy.
B.Saving money is no longer necessary.
C.The pleasing Friday-night feeling is fading.
D.Earning money is getting more difficult.
23.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.Wallet:A Thing of the Past B.Changes in Payment Trends
C.Cash No Longer Useful D.Age of Wallet Coming to an End

I realized I would not see a real person named Sophie at Sophie’s Eatery, because like most new restaurants these days,Sophie’s Eatery is a robot-restaurant.
When I walked in,a cute little manager robot appeared, looking rather like a toaster with blinking blue eyes.It escorted me to a nice table in the back. The menu monitor popped out of my table and showed me pictures of my dining choices.I tapped my choices and clicked OK,and the screen slid back down.
I watched as full plates rode the conveyor belts that moved along each aisle(过道) of tables. In just a few minutes,my dish stopped at my table, and I took it from the belt.Later,I placed my empty plate back on the conveyor belt, and it was taken away into the kitchen to be cleaned.
I watched the little toaster showing customers to tables while I ate my main dish. The food was delicious, but I was starting to feel extremely angry because dealing with robots always makes me feel inhuman.Pretty soon,I wanted to talk to someone real, even if it was just a few sentences.
So when my dessert arrived,I took action.I dropped my plate on the floor with a satisfying crash.I was so happy when I saw the manager toaster’s blinking red eyes—at last,a real live person would arrive!
But instead,a crew of two robots quickly appeared.A robot broom rushed over and started to sweep the pieces of the broken plate into a robot garbage can. They finished and moved back into the kitchen.
My plan to get a little reality into Sophie’s Eatery failed.I hope the robot-restaurant trend ends soon.I want to deal with people again!

We can have video chat with astronauts aboard the International Space Station and watch live footage from the frozen heights of a mountain. But communicating with a submarine(潜艇) or a diver is not so easy. The lack of practical methods for sharing data between underwater airborne(空气传播的) devices has long been a frustration for scientists. The difficulty stems from the fact that radio signals work perfectly in air travel but poorly in water.Sonar signals used by underwater sensors reflect off the surface of water rather than reaching the air.
Now,researchers at MIT have developed a method with the potential to revolutionize underwater communication.“What we’ve shown is that it’s actually feasible to communicate from underwater to the air,”says Fadel Adib,a professor at MIT’s Media Lab,who led the research.
The MIT researchers designed a system that uses an underwater machine to send sonar signals to the surface, making vibrations(震动) corresponding to the 1s and 0s of the data.A surface receiver then reads and decodes these tiny vibrations. The researchers call the system TARF.It has any number of potential real-world uses,Adib says.It could be used to find downed planes underwater by reading signals from sonar devices in a plane’s black box and it could allow submarines to communicate with the surface.
Right now the technology is low-resolution.The initial study was conducted in the MIT swimming pool at maximum depths of around 11 or 12 feet. The next steps for the researchers are to see if TARF is workable at much greater depths and under varying conditions—high waves, storms, schools of fish. They also want to see if they can make the technology work in the other direction—air to water. If the technology proves successful in real-world conditions, expect “texting while diving” to be the latest underwater fashion.
28.What does the author mainly talk about in paragraph 1
A.The future of video chat underwater and in the air.
B.The frustrations of developing underwater devices.
C.The difficulty of communication from water to air.
D.The current situation of communicating with a submarine.
29.What does the underlined word “feasible” mean
A.Achievable. B.Convenient. C.Changeable. D.Alternative.
30.What do we know about TARF
A.It is widely used to find downed planes.
B.It can work well at great depths underwater.
C.It is an underwater machine that sends signals.
D.It can send, receive and read signals from underwater.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.The Real-world Uses of Sonar Technology
B.Full Water-to-air Communication Closer to Reality
C.A Breakthrough in the Application of Video Chat
D.TARF Becoming a New Means of Communication

Petrol and diesel(柴油) cars may still dominate our roads, but their days are numbered.A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87% of daily car journeys in the US.That figure could rise to 98% by 2020.
One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety”—drivers’ concerns about running out of juice on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.
Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed quite considerably over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their large price tags(标签) drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars are starting to persuade critics.Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion(燃料) engine models a run for their money.
As well as advancements on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies.Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now,the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back.Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flights a reality.
Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions. Were the US to act on the study’s findings and replace 87% of its cars with electric vehicles,it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61%.However,because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim to be completely emission-free.That said,as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.
32.Which is the best title for this passage
A.My Dream Car B.History of Electric Cars
C.Problems with Petrol Cars D.Driving into the Future
33.As used in paragraph 2,the underlined word “hurdle” means “ ”.
A.aim B.barrier C.consequence D.step
34.In the past, why did many people refuse to buy the electric cars
A.They were expensive. B.They were very poorly made.
C.They were not widely promoted. D.They couldn’t travel at a high speed.
35.What is the function of paragraph 4

Christmas Day was coming.I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus.I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me.I knew Grandma always told me the truth.Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me.“No Santa Claus!” She shouted.“Ridiculous!Don’t believe it.” That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.
“Now,put on your coat,and let’s go.”
“Go where,Grandma ” I asked.“Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors,Grandma handed me ten dollars.“Take this money,” she said,“and buy something for someone who needs it.I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
I was only eight years old.I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for.I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair.He sat right behind me in Mrs Pollock’s grade-two class.
Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat.I knew that because he never went out for recess(课间休息) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat.I would buy Bobby Decker a coat!I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone ” the lady behind the counter asked kindly,as I laid my ten dollars down.“Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me,put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
That evening,Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper.
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker’s front door to open and finally it opened.

I’ve been a volunteer in the Macmillan@Glasgow Libraries programme for just over a year.I got involved because I was looking for something to volunteer for after I retired from work.I thought being a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support volunteer might be a good way to do that by using some of the skills I learned at work.
At one time,I felt I made a real difference when a lady came in to use the service. She was very upset, but she was not the person with cancer. It was her partner. She had lots of things on her mind. We,together with a counselor, had a chat about her to help deal with all the emotions she felt.We knew we could arrange something,so we discussed with her what could be done for her family. She was relieved that we could get something arranged for her and liked the fact that we managed to get the ball rolling during her visit.
The good thing about having the services in the library is that the environment is non-clinical and therefore more relaxing than the hospital or doctor’s surgery. The team in the library are not medically trained. That means we do not use big words or medical terms very often.
It’s great that the people who volunteer all work well together, helping each other to get a resolution for people who come in.It’s good to have to team at the other end of the phone whenever we get something unusual. It is a pleasure to be able to help as a volunteer.
24.What can we infer about the author
A.He is a retired doctor. B.He is volunteering in a hospital.
C.He is a counselor in cancer. D.He has fought against cancer before.

C.Because she didn’t know how to treat cancer.
D.Because she had a poor relation with her husband.
26.What do we know about the volunteers
A.They do well in teamwork. B.They receive medical training.
C.They all used to be helped. D.They often meet unusual things.
27.Why does the author write this text
A.To call on readers to do voluntary work.
B.To show us how to help those in trouble.
C.To share his experiences as a volunteer.
D.To teach us how to take care of cancer patients.

If you are taking vitamin supplements to reduce your risk of heart disease or cancer,a group of health experts want you to know that those vitamins may actually increase your risk of cancer.
The US Preventive Services Task Force came to this conclusion after reviewing dozens of studies.
Nearly half of adults in the US take at least one vitamin or mineral supplement on a regular basis. These pills are advertised as a way to promote general health. In some cases, manufacturers promote them as cancer fighters and heart protectors.
Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes suggest that oxidative (氧化性的) stress contributes to diseases like cancer and heart disease. If so,there is a reason to believe that antioxidants — including beta-carotene,vitamins A,C,and E — could be useful as preventive medicines.
But when the Task Force examined the medical evidence on vitamins,it found “inadequate evidence” to support the claims that vitamin and mineral supplements benefit healthy adults.
“Cardiovascular (心血管的) disease and cancer have a significant health impact in America, and we all want to find ways to prevent these diseases,” Dr.Virginia Moyer, who heads the Task Force, said in a statement. But so far,she added, the medical evidence does not show that taking vitamins is helpful in this regard.
However, the Task Force did find “adequate evidence” that people with a raised risk of lung cancer actually increase their risk further by taking betacarotene,a precursor of vitamin A.
The Task Force recommendations of taking vitamins regularly apply to healthy adults aged 50 and older who don’t have “special nutritional needs”.The advice does not apply to children, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, people with chronic illnesses,or people who have to take supplements because they can’t get all their essential nutrients from their diet.
28.Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes find out .
A.ample evidence that taking vitamins is helpful for treating lung cancer
B.cardiovascular disease spreads very fast in America
C.oxidative stress can lead to heart disease and cancer
D.people must take vitamins on a regular basis
29.What can we conclude from the Task Force’s findings
A.Scientists want to control cardiovascular disease.
B.In some regard, taking vitamins is not useful.
C.Manufacturers cannot produce medical-use vitamins.
D.Vitamins must be useful to prevent cancer and heart disease.
30.Who can take vitamins regularly according to the advice of the Task Force
A.A 60-year-old healthy worker.
B.A 15-year-old boy with short-sightedness.
C.A 34-year-old pregnant lady.
D.A 40-year-old man who never eats vegetables or fruit.
31.What’s the best title for the text
A.An Inside Look at Vitamins B.Task Force:Ending to Vitamins
C.Vitamins:To Live or to Kill D.Taking Vitamins to Prevent Cancer May Fail

In today’s society, language plays a key role in defining gender by vocabulary, and also their non-verbal vocabulary. Each one of these different types of ways of communicating is obviously different between men and women.
Many different studies show that men tend to talk much more than women. It has also been proven that women tend to speak faster than men;this is due to the fact that women tend to be interrupted more often than men are,and also have the ability to speak more clearly, precisely, and more quickly than men.In one study it was found that women spoke for an average of three minutes describing a painting,as opposed to the thirteen-minute average it took men to describe it.
Men and women also tend to have a very different non-verbal way of communicating, which can also make it very hard for one another to understand what the opposite sex is trying to say.Men’s body language is much more reserved when talking to women.Men tend not to make as much eye contact and they generally stay farther away from women when talking to them.Men avoid other people’s body space while talking, and they also tend to sit back when talking. All of these have given off the impression of disinterest or boredom.Women are by far better listeners and much more enjoyable to talk with and they tend to raise more topics for conversation.
Women also make it clearer whether or not the conversation is going somewhere or just stuck in neutral. After learning about our styles of communicating with each other,I have decided that although men have not quite mastered communicating, what fun would it be if we all spoke the same “language” The little games men and women play with each other while conversing would be lost. The question everyone asks himself or herself after talking with someone of the opposite sex,“I wonder if there’s something there ” would no longer exist.
32.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.The differences between men’s and women’s languages.
B.The different speed of men’s and women’s speech.
C.The ability of men’s and women’s spoken language.
D.The non-verbal vocabulary of men and women.
33.In what way do men and women differ according to the third paragraph
A.Speed of understanding. B.Understanding of speech roles.
C.Politeness of communication. D.Application of body language.
34.What is the author’s attitude to the differences between men’s and women’s communication
A.Cautious. B.Favourable. C.Ambiguous. D.Skeptical.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Women,Born Excellent Talkers B.Men’s and Women’s Social Roles
C.Vocabulary and Communication D.Opposite Gender,Different Languages

Common Public Speaking Problems
The use of “I feel”“I think” and “maybe”
In the question-and-answer session of the speaking competition, many contestants began their answers with uncertain expressions like “I feel”“I guess”“I hear”“maybe” and “perhaps”.
These words show that the person is only speaking from his or her point of view. 36
Work on keeping your answers brief and to the point. 37 Instead of the empty-sounding “I guess”,using facts, together with a clear conclusion based on those facts,is far more likely to be popular with an audience.
Using only one speaking style
Don’t stick to the same tone. 38
For example, when they spoke about their dreams, some sounded romantic.Others used humour.Very few used several different styles together.Try mixing more than one style, rather than just sticking with the same one.
Irresponsible answers
Public speaking is different from personal conversations. You’re responsible for your words. 39 So you should think twice before you talk.Don’t be like the student who, when asked about his opinion on book piracy, started by saying he supported it.
Talking around the topic rather than directly answering it
You should focus on one point and give a clear solution. The key is to work out what question is being asked. Is it asking you to discuss a certain topic or to present your own point of view
Use one or two arguments together and give a strong conclusion. 40
A.It can be boring.Try to mix it up.
B.Even though you want to answer quickly, you don’t want to sound foolish.
C.Also work on delivering them with calmness and confidence.
D.Deliberate gestures and affected expressions of feelings are improper in a successful speech.
E.Remember that judges are not judging you on whether they agree but on your ability to say what you think clearly.
F.This lacks the support of facts and seems not to be reliable for the judges and audience.
G.Confidence is extremely important in public speaking as it lets a speaker sound more convincing.

David is a good middle school teacher. When I first met him,I asked him what encouraged him to teach.David smiled. And he told me a story.
When he was young, like many young boys,David was fond of throwing stones. One afternoon,he discovered, that if he threw stones over his neighbor’s fence,he could create a crashing sound — the sound of breaking glass. So he would throw a stone and wait for the sound.David felt fun at that moment, but then he did get caught.
The man who lived next door came to his house and told his parents about the boy and the stones.“I would like David to come to my home so I can show him a few things,” the man said. His parents, sorry for that and disappointed by their son’s behavior, sent their son to the neighbor’s house.David followed the man into his house, through the back door, and out into the yard. There, next to the fence, was a greenhouse. The neighbor led David into the greenhouse, and David imagined all kinds of punishments. What was the man going to do with him
As he led David down the rows of plants, the man began talking about flowers. He walked slowly, showing him each one and explaining what he loved about them.He said,“There are my gladioli (剑兰);they can get quite large and bloom in many colors. There are violets;they are my wife’s favorite. When I see them,I remember her,and miss her.In the deep purple, she lives in my eyes. And these orchids, right here, are very difficult to grow. But when they bloom, they create the most beautiful shape. You cannot believe until you see with your own eyes how a flower can be so beautiful.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
David was surprised.
As he walked home,David decided he would grow up to be a teacher.

M:And she did well in the part
W:She was great in the part. She had always been shy,and she suddenly became less shy and more confident.A member of the stage management team for the show was taking over a local agency and asked her to sign up.So then she had an agent to represent her and try to get roles for her.
