(2023广东广州华南师大高二上学期月考)
Despite the deeply rooted impression that hotels are humorless, colorless spaces, there are already many design-forward accommodation options around the world. It’s easy to see the appeal of spending your vacation in a pretty,Instagram-worthy spot that truly fits into a destination instead of feeling like it could have appeared anywhere.
But when it comes to choosing between a pre-dawn wakeup at a fashionable neighborhood design hotel in order to get to the airport in time for my flight or just crashing at an airport chain hotel and being able to squeeze in another hour of rest,I always go for Option B.
That is even truer now that I’m attempting to travel during the pandemic.I still want convenience, but my number-one concern is cleanliness.Lots of hotels have adopted measures of disinfection amid the pandemic, but many of them take place outside of a guest’s watchful eye.Admittedly, white walls are cheap, easy, and lack personality and creativity. But these days, they are a place I can easily look for dirty spots without needing a blue light camera.
And while huge sculptures and electric pieces of Pop Art are fun to stare at in museums, they’re too much sensory overload when I’m just trying to feel at ease.Ultimately my sense of peace in a chain hotel room isn’t just about paint colors or art choices, but its uniformity. There’s always a fresh towel to pull off the rack(架子),a pad of paper and a pen on the desk, and a hot shower. When travel makes us stressed out in a city where we may not speak the local language, staying at a chain hotel means that at least something is familiar.
Not everything needs to be dramatic every day.Compared to my usual life in a tiny apartment on a loud, busy street, the quiet cool feeling of placelessness is paradise.
1.Which of the following hotel rooms will the author most likely stay in
A.A room whose pictures can be posted on social media.
B.A room where the airport is short distance away.
C.A room which shows the typical local culture.
D.A room which is decorated with art works.
2.Why does the author prefer a chain hotel room these days
A.It’s much cheaper than other hotels.
B.It’s more convenient than other hotels.
C.It makes the author feel at home.
D.It ensures cleanliness in some way.
3.What does the underlined word “uniformity” in the fourth paragraph mean
A.Uniqueness. B.Sameness.
C.Warmth. D.Dullness.
4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A.To justify choosing chain hotels.
B.To compare different types of hotels.
C.To describe a travel experience.
D.To introduce how to choose a hotel.

Some people describe American society as a salad bowl while others think of it as a melting pot.In a bowl of salad, all the ingredients are mixed together. 1 Together, however, the ingredients make up a unity. All the ingredients of a salad contribute to the finished product. They may be covered with the same dressing(调料),but the green vegetables, tomatoes and cooked corn can all be seen for what they are.
From this point of view,America is very much like a salad bowl where individual ethnic groups mix together, yet maintain their cultural uniqueness.People may work together during the day at similar jobs and in the same companies, but at night they may return to their ethnic groups where their own individual culture directs their way of life. 2 Each ethnic group has its own special customs, language, food and traditions to protect and defend. This idea of the salad bowl is referred to as cultural diversity;that is,American society is a collection of various cultures living together in harmony within one country.
3 Here, society is like one large pot of soup. All cultural aspects are mixed together, sacrificing their original identity and keeping a bit of what they were to become a new reality. The longer the soup is cooked, the better the taste and the more likely it will be for the mixture to dissolve. In this sense,America can surely be seen as a melting pot where people from all over the world come to live and work together forming one nation. There are dozens of shared symbols. 4 In such a culture, symbols like the flag and the nation’s official song serve to break down the walls which separate ethnic groups.
Whether a salad bowl or a melting pot,America can be best described as a mixture of both. 5
A.Both are correct depending on one’s point of view.
B.They never lose their shapes, colours or tastes.
C.This is why there is so much diversity within America.
D.In other words,America is a nation where there is unity in diversity.
E.Thus, one needs to abandon one’s culture to be considered “American”.
F.They serve to develop the various ethnic groups to create a new American culture.
G.The other theory, which is also used to describe American society,is the melting pot.

It is amazing how many of the things in science fiction and movies have become reality. For instance,in the movie Star Trek, the workers could go to a replicator(复制器) and order food, drinks or anything they could program into the computer. Before long, the item would appear. This is possible today,in a way, with technology we have had for years.
Several manufacturers(制造商) have created 3D printers. One company,MakerBot,has created a printer that the average person can afford. It is called The Replicator. You can download a lot of design software from the Internet for use with The Replicator. In the near future, rather than going to a store to buy what you need, you may be able to download what you want from the Internet and print it out at home.
The process was first used with music. At the very beginning, music was recorded onto plastic disks with etching(蚀刻法).Music can now be copied without a physical product. Rather than having to buy a physical book or magazine, you can now download them from the Internet in digital form.
This technology is already used in engineering and architecture.Melissa Shoes,a Brazilian foot wear company,is using this technology to create shoes.Rather than having to go through the current process of product design and development, the company is able to design and print shoes for display to see how well they will sell before having lots of them made.

Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law,to be a doctor,or,if they were creative enough,to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile,a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is being a video blogger,or a vlogger. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Holly-wood studios;now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star.Vloggers are the biggest stars today because they are normal people interacting with their fans about everyday life.
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful can earn fame and fortune. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being bloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies.Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that’s enough for him.
5.What is the passage mainly about
A.Most young Britons choose to be vloggers as their job.
B.The Internet is influencing young Britons’ career choice.
C.The Internet is taking the place of traditional studios.
D.Young Britons cannot find jobs without the Internet.
6.Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers
A.Vloggers can earn greater fame and more money on the Internet.
B.There is too much competition in traditional show business.
C.The Internet makes it convenient to enter show business.
D.Anyone with a computer will surely become a star.
7.What can we infer from the fifth paragraph
A.Only a few vloggers can be successful.
B.A vlogger cannot earn fame or fortune.
C.People often see the bright side of being a vlogger.
D.Dreams will always remain to be dreams.

(2023原创预测题)
For many of us,the pandemic(流行病) revealed who our closest friends are.For children, the situation was even more dramatic. Many missed their social circle—especially their best friends.
These friends aren’t just people we enjoy hanging out with;they are the ones we trust completely. As children,we tend to treat them as members of our extended family,to the point where their homes may feel as familiar as our own.As adults,we know we can call them at a moment’s notice to share the highs and lows of our daily lives.
Children often have a pragmatic(务实的) view of friendship, forming close bonds with peers in the playground or classroom, says Eileen Kennedy-Moore.“It is a‘love the one you’re with’ approach.” Psychologists say best friendships can help children prepare for close relationships, including romantic ones,as they grow up.“Best friendship is really like falling in love,” says Kennedy-Moore.“Close friendships in childhood help kids practice the skills they need in close relationships throughout their lives. They learn about other people, and about themselves,to deal with feelings like loneliness, jealousy and frustration.”
If children don’t talk about friends at home,it doesn’t mean they don’t have any,she says, adding that this may be because they prefer a quieter style of interacting with others.Parents can support their children in forming friendships by organizing fun meet-ups outside of school.“Kids usually make friends by doing fun things together,so you may want to think about your children’s interests and seek out activities that fit their personality and could be done with other children,” says Kennedy-Moore.
Whether it’s a playground friend or a close cousin, having a friend and ally in life can clearly make a huge difference. For some, that bond starts in childhood. For others,it may take more time. But it’s worth insisting on—because it’s never too late to find a best friend.

A.They like to hang out together.

About a half-mile behind our Minnesota farm lay a pond.In summer,my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of oak trees to skip stones there. The pond wore a collar of black mud.It was not a place for swimming.
In late summer, the pond would be covered by a green and bubbly scum(起泡的浮渣).Sometimes a strong, unpleasant smell rose from it.We stayed away.
When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place. One day when ice covered it,Harry said to me,“Try walking across.”
The ice looked solid. No water showed through it,but I hesitated.“Go ahead.” Harry urged.“Try it.You’re lighter than I am.If the ice holds,we can run and slide carefully on it.It’ll be fun.” I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice.I began to slide across the pond.
In the middle of the pond, the ice gave way with a sudden crack(裂缝)!I stretched out(伸展) my arms. The next thing I knew I was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice by arms outstretched on the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water.I thought of the bottom of the pond.I knew it would be black and awful down there, full of mud and maybe rotting creatures.
I tried to climb out of the hole, but when I got a knee on the ice,it broke like window glass.Again and again I tried to get out.Again and again the ice broke into pieces. The hole widened.I was wearing a coat of heavy material. As it became completely wet,it dragged me down.I was tired of the struggle and rested with my arms stretched out on the ice.
I looked at Harry on shore. He seemed rooted to the spot.“I can’t get out!” I screamed when I caught some breath.

The most impressive one is the rapid development of transportation. In the past, people travelled mainly by bus.Nowadays, with more and more high-speed railways and light rail lines built,it’s much faster and more convenient for people to go almost everywhere.Additionally, the spread of shared bikes helps people to travel any distance easily. All these couldn’t have happened without the measures taken by the government and the application of new technologies.
Everyone in China is enjoying these conveniences everyday, and we are all confident that China will create a brighter future.Just come and have a look yourself!
Yours,
Li Hua
Ⅵ.Harry turned and ran from the pond.Staring at his familiar figure out of sight,I wondered:“Is he running for help,or is he running away and leaving me sliding to the bottom ” After what seemed to be centuries of waiting,I was on the edge of collapse.Suddenly,Harry came back with a branch, which was large, black, and v-shaped.He pushed the branch toward me.I grabbed it immediately and was eventually dragged out of the icy water by Harry. What a narrow escape! We stumbled home, with my clothes dripping water.
The moment I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, mum rushed over. She helped me take off my coat, gave me a quick bath, and then passed me a cup of milk to warm me up.I tearfully complained to her about all that had happened and Harry was to blame for getting me involved into such a trouble. His head dropping,Harry made an apology to me.I was comforted and relieved, but in fact, the pond was still attractive to young Harry and me,especially when winter came again.Unit 3分层跟踪检测(二)Using language

(2023江苏盐城第一次统一考试)
For years,Jessica and Eric have lived down the street from their favorite sandwich shop.Despite its being so close to home, they preferred to dine in,and always tipped generously when they did. But,during the pandemic in 2020,the cafe temporarily closed, then reopened—for takeout orders only.So their new routine became to order online,go pick up their food, and eat it at home. 1
That is,until the day they drove up and a waitress ran out to meet them.“I was wondering if I’m doing something wrong, because you never leave a tip,” she said.Eric attempted to explain:“Because we aren’t being waited on,we didn’t think tipping was necessary.” 2 “She stormed off,” Jessica says.
The pandemic has been particularly hard on people working for tips. Some haven’t been able to do their jobs at all, while others don’t interact with customers the same way. 3 Meanwhile, many customers felt the need to tip more because of the new risks and hardships that essential service workers suddenly faced.
“ 4 We were tipping based on emotion, and that may not have had anything to do with the service. And that service also became harder to assess,” says Toni Dupree,a professional etiquette(礼仪) coach. Some old standards no longer seem fair, and several newer ones will apply long after the pandemic is over.
Next time,in Dupree’s view, you’re unsure whether a tip is in order, follow this simple rule: 5 The novelist George Eliot asked,“What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other ” Dupree adds:“Tipping well is one way to make things easier for someone else.”
A.When in doubt,tip.
B.That made it worse.
C.It is service itself that counts.
D.Tipping never crossed their minds.
E.To enjoy good services,tipping is a must.
F.Just as many services have changed,so should tipping.
G.Tips dried up in either case, causing a lot of people to suffer.

Finding a Friend
Two years ago,a dog ran into my yard. When he started to wag his tail and bark,I thought he was nice. But when my hand got close to his forehead,he lashed out and bit me.The next day when I woke up I was lying in the hospital bed with stitches on my right arm from my wrist to my elbow.Even though the dog had to go to the pound, the fear and the scares he gave never left.
You can imagine with my fear of something like this I was an easy target for bullies.I didn’t want to become friends with anyone at my school.
I knew the day would come when the teasing would become too much and I wouldn’t be able to take it any longer. On a Friday it happened and I ended up running to my house instead of taking the bus home.I went straight into the woods.I listened to the hush of the trees and admired the beauty of the falling leaves, letting all the frustration go.
Suddenly I heard whimpering (呜咽).I saw the last thing I wanted to see,a dog. From instinct I stood up,legs tense, but the dog didn’t move.Even with my fear of dogs,a part of me wanted to go and comfort the wounded dog.Eventually my heart overpowered my conscience.Carefully I reached out my right hand.My scar started to tingle, remembering the last time I was this close to a dog. Then, before I was ready the dog stretched out his neck, pushing his head into my hand.At that point I knew we needed each other.
The dog happily followed me home.Even after a few days with Scruffy (which is what I chose to name him),the statement “Dogs are man’s best friend” was proven true.
One day,I was taking him for a walk when I noticed a sign on a telephone pole. The sign read:
Lost Dog
Medium height, brown eyes, male, scruffy light brown hair.Answers to the name Copper. If seen, please call me at 544-0222,or bring him to my house at 18 Sugar Hill Road,Easton,NH.
Thank you,
Annie Samson
Next to the writing there was a picture of Copper.

2.请按如下格式作答。
Undoubtedly, that was a picture of the dog sitting right beside me.
The next day I brought Copper to Easton to find his owner.

Ⅵ.Don’t waste food
My dear friends,
Recently,I have noticed a horrible thing that astonished me.A number of classmates don’t cherish the food. They buy much food and only eat a little. Then, they throw the rest into the dustbins.
What a shame! After all, every bite of the food you throw away contains the hard labor of the producers, including the farmers and the workers.Additionally, many people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat.If you can save the food, they will have more chances to have something to eat.
From where I stand,I do wish all of us can cherish food and never waste food. This is our duty.
Ⅶ.Undoubtedly, that was a picture of the dog sitting right beside me. My heart shattered into a million pieces. The dog who had rescued me from drowning in sadness belonged to someone else. That evening I sat in bed, staring at the sign that I had torn down in anger.Just then it occurred to me that Annie was probably feeling just as miserable as I had before I found “Copper”.At that moment I knew I had to return my friend to his rightful owner.
The next day I brought Copper to Easton to find his owner. When I knocked on the door I knew I had done the right thing. The girl answered the door and almost cried with happiness that her dog had come home. She thanked me about twenty times before she took Copper. Then, right as she was closing the door,I whispered,“He’s a great dog.” She must have recognized the sadness in my eyes because she offered for me to come over after school and walk Copper with her.Annie and I quickly became best friends and to this day we still are.Surprisingly enough,I owe it all to a dog.
