The“Mona Lisa” may maintain her famously mysterious smile because she benefits from one of Paris' best kept secrets: An underground cooling system that's helped the Louvre Museum cope with the unbearable heat that has broken temperature records across Europe.
With a depth of up to 98 feet and 55 miles of pipes, the little known “urban cold” network snakes unknowing beneath Parisians' feet, which uses electricity generated by renewable sources, is the largest in Europe and runs around the clock with a deafening noise totally inaudible above ground.
Paris City Hall has now signed an ambitious contract to triple the size of the network by 2042 to 157 miles. It would make it the largest urban cooling system in the world.
Three of the 10 high tech cooling sites lie on the Seine river. When the Seine's water is cold enough, a machine captures it and uses it to cool the system's water. The heat created as a byproduct is sent back into the Seine where it is absorbed. The chilled water is then pumped through the system's pipes to its 730 Parisian clients.
Paris' cooling sites all use renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar panels. French officials see this energy independence as particularly important given the threat of Russia cutting off energy supplies to Europe.
The merits of using a cooling system which uses renewable energy to operate are already being felt by sites that use them. The world's most visited museum, the Louvre, has benefited from the network since the 1990s.
“It allows us to benefit from energy with a lower carbon footprint available all year round,” said Laurent Le Guedart, the Louvre's Heritage Director. “The particularity of the Louvre Museum is that it needs to use iced cold water to correctly conserve the artwork and to control the humidity.”
Le Guedart said that the system is a money saver given the rising cost of energy linked to the Ukraine conflict. It operates notably in the State Room of the Pavillon Denon where the “Mona Lisa” lives. Perhaps it's why beads of sweat have never trickled down the brow painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
24.Which is TRUE about the underground cooling system in Paris
A.It is too deep to be heard.
B.It is the largest one in the world.
C.It uses electricity for free to cool air.
D.It makes Paris the coolest in Europe.
25.How does the system work
A.By capturing and absorbing heat from its clients.
B.By pumping the water from the Seine to its clients.
C.By changing the water in the system for that in the Seine.
D.By pumping the water cooled by the Seine through the system.
26.What benefit does the Louvre Museum get from the system
A.Attracting more people to see Mona Lisa.
B.Protecting its artwork from heat and humidity.
C.Getting rid of the threat of the Ukraine conflict.
D.Reducing carbon footprint with less money than before.
27.Which of the following questions can be answered by this passage
A.Why was smiling Mona Lisa painted
B.Why does Paris keep the system a secret
C.How many more sites will the system have
D.What will the system be like in two decades
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了巴黎的地下城市制冷系统。
24.答案与解析:A 细节理解题。根据第二段中“With a depth of up to 98 feet and 55 miles of pipes, the little known ‘urban cold’ network snakes unknowing beneath Parisians' feet”可知,巴黎的地下制冷系统深达98英尺,地面上完全听不见。
25.答案与解析:D 细节理解题。根据第四段中“When the Seine's water is cold enough, a machine captures it and uses it to cool the system's water. ...”可知,制冷系统通过将塞纳河冷却的水泵入系统来发挥作用。
26.答案与解析:B 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“It allows us to benefit from energy with a lower carbon footprint available all year round”以及“The particularity of the Louvre Museum is that it needs to use iced cold water to correctly conserve the artwork and to control the humidity.”可知,制冷系统使卢浮宫可以保护艺术品不受湿热的影响。
27.答案与解析:D 推理判断题。根据第三段中“Paris City Hall has now signed an ambitious contract to triple the size of the network by 2042 to 157 miles. ...(巴黎市政厅现在签署了一份雄心勃勃的合同,到2042年将把制冷网络的规模扩大两倍,达到157英里。)”可知,巴黎市政厅计划在二十年后将制冷系统的规模扩大两倍,所以本文回答了D项“20年后这个系统会是什么样子?”的问题。

[2023·四川省凉山州第三次诊断]You go out for a meal and scan a QR code to order the food, but it asks for your phone number. You go back home and are asked to look into a facial recognition camera. Data collection is everywhere.
However, the personal information collected by companies can be leaked for marketing or used for telecommunication fraud (电信诈骗). According to a survey of 5,458 people by the China Consumers Association, 85.2 percent of people said they had experienced personal information leaks from applications on their smart phones. Most said they got unwanted calls or text messages afterward.
On Nov.1, the Personal Information Protection Law came into effect in China. The law has detailed rules to strengthen the protection of personal information.
The law defines personal information as any kind of information about people who are or can be identified, in electronic or other forms. So a person's name, date of birth, ID number, address and phone number are all personal information.
There are also some kinds of personal information that are regarded as “sensitive”, such as fingerprints, faces, religious beliefs, medical health, financial accounts and all data relating to minors under 14.
According to the law, activities such as collecting, using, processing and trading of personal information will be strictly regulated. One key rule is that those handling personal information should inform users and get permission. For sensitive information, there are stricter rules on related activities. For example, in the case of a minor, approval from their parents is required.
Protection of personal information of online platform users is especially stressed. According to a report released in June on Internet development in China, the country has over 1 billion Internet users and 60 percent of surveyed applications had collected users' information illegally. Many apps would collect users' information even when the app was not in use. They could access the phonebook, photos, turn on the microphone and get the users' location.
For individuals, it's important to raise awareness of protecting personal information. Individuals need to fully understand the requests for personal information. If it's not necessary, don't agree. If you find that your personal data has been used illegally, you can report to consumer councils or (网络管理机构) with evidence.

D.Report to consumer councils or cyberspace administrations with evidence.

You may have noticed sudden, brief twitching (抽动) at some point while your dog was sleeping and wondered if they were dreaming or even expressing some type of discomfort.
These involuntary movements only occur during dream states and usually don't last long. So is twitching just a normal part of dreaming, or are there times when you should worry
Dogs sleep an average of 12-14 hours each day. While they sleep, a dog's brain processes information and experiences from the day through dreams. Twitching is often related to active dream cycles in the brain.
According to research by psychologist Stanley Coren, an average size dog will dream about every 20 minutes, and these dreams will last about a minute. Larger breeds have fewer dreams that last longer—about every 45 minutes for 4 minutes. The opposite is true for smaller breed dogs; they will dream about every 10 minutes for up to 30 seconds.
Dogs experience the same dream stages as humans, including non rapid eye movement (NREM), short wave sleep (SWS), and rapid eye movement (REM). During the REM state, a dog's eyes move around behind their closed eyelids, and the large body muscles are turned off so the dream is not physically acted out. The amount of twitching depends on how much these off switches cramp muscle movement.
If your dog sleeps next to you, they may unintentionally disturb your sleep with their sudden body movements. However, it is often advised not to awaken a dog that is twitching in their sleep unless they are clearly in distress.
A bad dream or night terror could be the cause of these involuntary movements, and they may wake up frightened. Try to avoid touching them so they don't bite you as a result of being shocked and panicked. Instead, gently call your dog's name until they respond. Speak calmly and tell them that they are safe and secure after they wake up. While they appear to be pretty active in their sleep, dreaming dogs may be slow to awaken.
32.Which of the following influences how often dogs dream
A.Their sleeping time.
B.Their body size.
C.Their daily experiences.
D.Their health conditions
33.What does the underlined word “cramp” mean in Paragraph 4
A.Stimulate. B.Analyze.
C.Restrict. D.Monitor.
34.Why is it advised not to wake up a dog twitching in sleep
A.To avoid being bitten by the dog.
B.To ensure the dog adequate sleep.
C.To prevent the dog getting shocked.
D.To escape disturbance from the dog.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.How does Dogs' Brain Work

D.How does Dogs' Twitch Affect Their Sleep
根据画线词上文“During the REM state, a dog's eyes move around behind their closed eyelids, and the large body muscles are turned off so the dream is not physically acted out.”以及“The amount of twitching depends on how much these off switches”可知,抽搐的程度取决于这些开关对肌肉运动的限制程度。故画线词意思是“限制”。
34.答案与解析:A 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Try to avoid touching them so they don't bite you as a result of being shocked and panicked.”可知,建议不要吵醒睡梦中抽搐的狗是为了避免被狗咬伤。
35.答案与解析:C 主旨大意题。根据第一段中“You may have noticed sudden ,brief twitching (抽动) at some point while your dog was sleeping and wondered if they were dreaming or even expressing some type of discomfort.”结合文章主要解释了为什么狗在睡觉时会抽搐的现象,以及如何处理这种情况避免被狗咬伤或惊吓到狗。可知,C选项“为什么狗在睡觉时会抽搐?”最符合文章标题。

[2023·湖南省长沙市一模]When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain. I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the peak. But I loved the challenge of it. Soon I'd climbed nearly 100 peaks. My parents were happy I'd finally found my favorite hobby.
I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen. Two years ago, on December 30, when I was 16, she and I drove to Oregon to tackle 11, 240 foot Mount Hood.
It's safer to start winter climbs at night when there's less risk of the sun melting the snowpack. That day, we started at 3 a.m., following the paths alongside the ski runs. The temperature was about 14 degrees, and we wore layers we could easily remove, knowing the climbing would make us warm.
After about five hours, we reached Devil's Kitchen, a plateau (高原) at about 10,000 feet, just before the final push to the top. By this point, the wind conditions were very unpleasant. My exposed skin felt as though it were burning. Some other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead. We had ice axes (斧子), helmets and crampons (带钉铁鞋底). We were prepared for the climb.
The trail we followed grew narrower and steeper. At around 9 a.m., we reached an ice step. It was about three or four feet tall and sloped at a 75 degree angle. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step.
You gain a sense of the ice when you stick your ax and crampons into it, and it felt good. Confident that I was safe, I put my full weight on it. Suddenly I heard a crack, and a whole thick piece of ice broke off the step, right under my foot.
In an instant, I fell backward. I could hear Mel calling my name as I fell down, bouncing off the rock face and rolling down the mountain as if I were a character in a video game. I remember thinking, “That is it. You're done.”

参考范文:
I stuck out my arms and legs, grabbing at anything. But it didn't help!/(That slowed my rolling down the mountain, but I was still sliding.) After a few heart in mouth seconds, I came to a stop on an icy rock. My clothes were shredded, my helmet was broken and my face was bloodied from cuts and scratches. Worse still, I was suffering from a sharp, unbearable pain in my legs. Fear gripped me and I was sinking to the depths of despair when Mel made her way down. Seeing me unable to move, she yelled for help, and with the help of several adult climbers she called the Mountain Rescue.
With Mel by my side I'd been lying on the icy rock for four hours by the time the rescuers reached me. They strapped me into a sled and pulled me down the mountain. I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but I screamed with each bounce. At the bottom of Mount Hood, I was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital, where my broken legs were treated. I didn't get released until one month later. It's true that the fall brought me pain and made me more cautious. But the experience also made me grow as a person with growing faith in friendship and greater enthusiasm for my favorite hobby.

33.What does the underlined word “cramp” mean in Paragraph 4

Ⅳ.读后续写
