A study of 500,000 songs released (发行) in the UK between 1985 and 2015 showed that pop music had decreased in happiness and increased in sadness.
In a report published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, researchers at the University of California examined hundreds of thousands of songs and classified them by their mood.“‘Happiness’ is going down,‘sadness’ is going up,and at the same time, the songs are becoming more ‘danceable’ and more ‘party-like’,” co-author Natalia L.Komarova told The Associated Press.
The study found songs in 2014 like Stay with Me by Sam Smith,Whispers by Passenger and Unmissable by Gorgon City have a “low happiness” trend. However, tracks from 1984 like Glory Days by Bruce Springsteen,Would I Lie to You by Eurythmics and Freedom by Wham had a “high happiness” trend.“The public seems to prefer happier songs, even though more and more unhappy songs are being released each year,” the researchers wrote.
Apart from the emotional trends, researchers discovered that dances and pop were the most successful styles of music and that there was a “clear downward” trend, with the popularity of rock beginning in the early 2000s.“So it looks like, while the overall mood is becoming less happy, people seem to want to forget it all and dance,” Komarova wrote in an email.
It was also found that the “maleness” of songs — the frequency of male singers in popular music — had decreased during the last 30 years.“Successful songs are characterised by a larger percentage of female artists compared to all songs,” they wrote.
This discovery appears at a time when the conversation around sex equality in the music industry is at its height, with more male artists and songwriters.

A
Humour is the most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”,criticizing, and getting the other fellow to do what you want without losing his face. For some jobs,it is the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss sensitive subjects because a serious dialogue may start a riot. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.
Humour is often the best way to keep a small misunderstanding from escalating(升级) into a big deal.Recently a neighbor of mine had a quarrel with his wife as she drove him to the airport.Airborne,he felt miserable, and he knew she did, too. Two hours after she returned home, she received a long-distance phone call.“Person-to-person for Mrs.I.A.Pologize,” intoned the operator.“That’s spelled ‘P’ as in...” In a twinkling(眨眼间),the whole day changed from bad to lovely at both ends of the wire.
An English hostess with a quick wit was giving a formal dinner for eight distinguished guests whom she hoped to enlist(赞助) in a major charity drive.Austerity was a fashion in England at the time, and she had asked her children to serve the meal. She knew that anything could happen...and it did, just as her son, with the studied concentration of a tight rope walker, brought in a large roast turkey;he successfully elbowed the swinging dining-room door, but the backswing(回摆) threw the turkey onto the dining-room floor.
The boy stood rooted;the guests staring at their plates.Moving only her head, the hostess looked at her son,“No harm,Daniel,” she said,“just pick him up and take him back to the kitchen...” She enunciated(发音) clearly so he would think about what she was saying,“and bring in the other one.”
A wink and a one-liner instantly changed the dinner from a red-faced embarrassment to laughter.

Young children don’t get sarcasm(冷嘲热讽)—but by the time they’re teens,it can be their default(默认的) mode. Here’s what science tells us about the mental skills behind that ironic expression. If I were to tell you that sarcasm is one of our most powerful linguistic tools, your first response might reasonably be,yeah right! Perhaps you’d even simply assume that I was sinking into a little irony myself.Parents or teachers of teenagers,in particular, may find it hard to believe that this annoying linguistic habit is a sign of a flexible and inventive mind.Yet that is exactly what psychologists and neuroscientists have been arguing.Psychologists and neuroscientists have found that sarcasm requires the brain to jump through numerous hoops to arrive at a correct interpretation, requiring more brainpower than literal statements.
And although it’s often dismissed as childish comments, sarcasm is actually evidence of maturity — as it takes years for a child’s developing brain to fully grasp and master it.An understanding of sarcasm’s use in humour develops particularly late — at around nine or ten years of age on average.
As a form of humour, sarcasm may also help us to deal with frustration or stress. It can be a way of letting off steam.Interestingly, studies have found that depressed and anxious individuals’ use of sarcasm increased over the pandemic — which may reflect this coping mechanism. In general, though, the primary motivation of sarcasm will be linguistic — to add colour to the messages that we hope to convey.
It may initially feel like a shock when parents notice their children deploying sarcasm.Parents may feel particularly helpless when dealing with a teenager who injects it into almost all interactions,as if they struggle to express any sincere emotions. But should we blame teens for employing this versatile(多功能的) tool Perhaps it’s better seen as the useful practice of a vital ability.
5.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A.Young children are born with sarcasm.
B.The writer was addicted to getting sarcasm.
C.The brain needs to complete many difficult steps before getting sarcasm.
D.People might believe it right that sarcasm is one of our most powerful linguistic tools.
6.Which of the following is the benefit of getting sarcasm
A.Making teens become mature.
B.Coping with difficult situations.
C.Overcoming the pandemic.
D.Adding more messages.
7.What can we infer about the teens
A.It’s easy for them to get sarcasm.
B.They are to blame for using sarcasm.
C.They are lacking in sincere emotions.
D.They use sarcasm so often.
8.What is the author’s attitude to teens’ sarcasm
A.Favourable.

Last summer when my family was making a road trip to Montana we arrived in Great Falls late one night. The kids had fallen asleep in the car,so my husband went and checked in while I stayed with the kids. When he returned with the room keys,we woke up our children and took them out of the car, through the hotel,up the elevators and into our guest room.We kept the room dark, leaving only the entry light on,and quickly put the kids into bed hoping they’d drift back to sleep.
My husband went to put our water in the mini-fridge only to notice some beers.“That’s strange,”he said and I agreed, but having discovered left-behind drinks in hotel fridges in the past,I didn’t think much about it.I figured the housekeepers had forgotten to check it.In the meantime,my husband ran to the store and I went into the bathroom to get ready for bed.As I washed my face,I looked down to see cardboard beer containers in the trash.I felt my heart begin to pound. We were in someone else’s room!
Now panicked,I checked the closet.Nothing.I then went to the dresser drawers.Nothing.My eyes scanned the door, room’s floor and there it was:A black bag that looked like one of ours. But it wasn’t!
I immediately called the front desk and the waitress in charge responded with an“Oh,my God!This is not good!”
By now the kids were wide-awake,jumping on the beds as I was trying to put all of our things back into our oversized suitcase.Just while we were packing our things,I heard someone was unlocking the door, which made my heart beating wildly.

Nobody likes an old idiot(傻子).Developing a sense of humor is part of becoming a mature, emotionally healthy individual.Laughter is good for the soul, which builds friendships and relieves stress. It serves as the glue for social situations and as an ice-breaker for sadness and boredom. If you’ve ever been told to “lighten up” or “chill out”,you should save the blue attitude for serious situations and develop your sense of humor.
Forgive the accident.A sudden fall is humorous not because we like to see people fall, but because it surprises us.From a spilled water glass in a meeting to Aunt Rae’s teeth coming off in the Thanksgiving Day,the embarrassment of accidents can be relieved by humor and a helping hand. After making sure that nobody is hurt, forgive accidents with a chuckle(咯咯地笑) rather than a scolding.
Look for the unexpected. The kid who used to look at you with his eyes closed during a test had the idea.Parents who serve green eggs and ham to their children on graduation day get the idea.Unexpected action lightens the atmosphere and relaxes people.
Learn to laugh with your kids. Most of what children say and do is funny.Help them learn that accidents are sometimes funny and sometimes occasions for joining in and helping another human being.By sharing laughs and attempting to explain humor, you develop your sense of humor,as well as help kids develop their own sense of humor.

We’re often told “laughter is the best medicine”.Laughter is ancient and instinctual, and a fundamental part of everyday life—something most of us enjoy naturally. There are comedy channels on TV,comedy festivals and our favorite funny friend who’s sure to get our giggle on.
So why do we need laughter experts Surely they’re for people who can’t laugh for whatever reason. However, while the ability to laugh is innate, the decision to activate and use it to its full ability is a choice.
When life gets stressful;illness creeps in;relationships are put to the test or we’re struggling financially, there’s rarely much to laugh about. So,we don’t.Yet turning into the lighter, more humorous side of life, and activating one’s “laughter self” is critical to mental health.Rather than waiting for something funny to happen or for life to be a bed of roses,we can transform our emotional state by tapping into our laughter and humor resources. This helps create distance between us and our pain and improve our moods and resilience(恢复力) to stress. It provides relief and release from some of the stress that has embedded in our bodies and minds, freeing ourselves to power forward, even a little.
Ironically, because laughter is an innate and largely unconscious behavior,it’s rarely given much thought. As it’s seldom thought about,it can’t be that important.
Wrong. If laughing is a more complex behavior,my belief is people will pay greater honor to it,rather than something to laugh off. It’s actually one of the most complicated things our bodies process. It is a vocal means of communication before language forms and the brain has fully developed. The vast majority of us maintain the ability to laugh until our final curtain falls, even amid declining cognitive function.
Turning toward the healing power of humor and laughter assists with personal and professional resilience, performance and overall well-being.No joke.
5.The underlined word “innate” in the second paragraph means .

A.Laughing could improve our cognitive abilities.
B.Laughing deserves our more attention.
C.The ability to laugh forms after the brain is fully developed.
D.Laughing is a complicated means of communication.
