We tend to think of plants as the furniture of the natural world. They don’t move, they don’t make sounds, and they don’t seem to respond to anything—at least not very quickly. But as is often the case, our human’s view of the world misses quite a lot.Plants talk to each other all the time. And the language is chemical.
Over the years scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, release compounds(化合物) into the air to help neighboring plants. These chemical warnings all have the same purpose—to spread information about one plant’s disease or infestation so other plants can defend themselves. But exactly how plants receive and act on many of these signals is still mysterious.
In this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They had identified one chemical message and traced it all the way from release to action.
The scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest, the cutworm. The researchers studied leaves from exposed and unexposed plants. They found one compound showed up more often in the exposed plants. The substance is called Hex Vic.When the scientists fed Hex Vic to cutworms,it knocked down their survival rate by 17%.The scientists identified the source of Hex Vic,and sprayed it lightly over healthy plants. Those plants were then able to start producing the cutworm-killing Hex Vic.Researchers confirmed that un-infested plants have to build their own weapon to fight off bugs and diseases. How do they know when to play defense They are warned first by their friendly plant neighbors.
It is a complex tale, and it may be happening in more plant species than tomatoes. It may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us.For now though,we know that plants not only communicate, but they look out for one another.
1.What does paragraph 1 intend to tell us

Plants don’t have ears or a central nervous system, but new research out of the University of Missouri has demonstrated that they might still have the ability to “hear”.More specifically, plants have been shown to exhibit an immune(免疫) response to the mere sound of a hungry insect.
For the study, researchers played the sound of a caterpillar chewing to a group of plants, which caused slight vibrations(振动) on the plants’ leaves. The plants were able to recognize these vibration patterns as danger, and responded by mounting the appropriate immune response. In other words,it appears that plants can “hear” themselves being chewed on.
Researchers assume that plants achieve this remarkable ability thanks to proteins that respond to pressure found within their cell membranes.Vibrations cause pressure changes within the cell, which can change the behavior of the proteins;however, additional study will be required to confirm or deny this theory.
Once researchers identify the exact mechanisms at play in this process,it could lead to advances in crop protection.Farmers could potentially learn to use sound to cause a plant’s natural chemical defenses against insect threats, rather than turning to poisonous chemicals.
“We can imagine applications of this where plants could be treated with sound or genetically engineered to respond to certain sounds that would be useful for agriculture,” said study author Heidi Appel.
The study adds to the growing list of ways that plants have been shown to sense their environments. They are not the boring organisms that many people assume they are.For instance, some plants are able to communicate with each other and signal upcoming danger to their neighbors by releasing chemicals into the air.Plants can respond to light(think about sunflowers) and temperature. Some can even respond to touch, such as the Venus flytrap(捕蝇草),which snaps shut when an insect stimulates its hairs.
5.Why did researchers carry out the study
A.To find out if plants can react to sounds.
B.To learn how plants recognize dangers.
C.To discover if plants can shake their leaves.
D.To see how plants improve immune systems.
6.What’s the potential use of researchers’ discovery
A.To remove insects.
B.To protect crops.
C.To treat plant diseases.
D.To produce chemicals.
7.What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph
A.There are more plants than we know.
B.Plants are more active than we think.
C.Plants fit in well with their environments.
D.Lots of secrets about plants remain unclear.
8.What can be the best title for the text
A.Can plants “talk” with each other
B.How do plants make use of sounds

Charles Darwin was a very famous scientist who lived in the 1800s.His ideas about evolution completely changed the way scientists understand the natural world. He recorded his ideas in notebooks marked with letters of the alphabet(字母表),which have been considered extremely important for showing how he developed the evolution.
The Cambridge University Library had several of Mr.Darwin’s notebooks. The two that were missing were kept in a small box,and were last seen in 2000.In 2001,someone noticed that the box was missing.Luckily, the library had taken pictures of the notebooks’ pages,so the information wasn’t completely lost.
In 2020,the library made a huge effort to find the books.Workers searched through the 10 million books and other things in the library, but they didn’t find the notebooks. Finally, the library asked people around the world to help look for the books. They officially reported the missing notebooks as stolen so that the police around the world would search for them.
Nobody could ever have expected the way in which the notebooks were returned recently:in a pink gift bag with a note that said “Librarian,Happy Easter,X”.People at the library quickly recognized the blue box that the notebooks had been stored in.Inside a brown envelope they found the two missing notebooks, tightly wrapped in plastic. After the police had examined the package, library workers were able to open and carefully study the notebooks. They were pleased to learn that the notebooks were in good shape. They hadn’t been damaged and they weren’t missing any pages.

For the past 60 years, the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has protected animals, restored lost habitats and advocated for policy changes that benefit wildlife. Now,the conservation organization is trying a new approach.
This year,AWF launched the inaugural Benjamin Mkapa African Wildlife Photography Awards. The contest aims to reach a different audience. While photography competitions are nothing new,AWF hopes that the exhibition of winning entries will encourage African people to take a more active role in conservation. Its CEO Kaddu Sebunya said,“Africans need to take responsibility for the conservation of their heritage.”
Photographers of all ages and backgrounds, professional and amateur, were invited to submit to the competition.A judging panel, comprised of photographers, conservationists, activists and safari guides, selected photos from 12 categories including “Art in Nature” “Coexistence and Conflict” and “Conservation Heroes”.
The “Conservation Heroes” category had special appeal for Kenyan conservation photographer Anthony Ochieng Onyango.“I realized there was a communication gap because most of what was being communicated was data in scientific publications,” said Onyango, adding that images are a simple way for people to connect to complex issues.
While there were many entries in the AWF competition, there’s only one 19-year-old Cathan Moore from South Africa among the category winners. There’s a lack of opportunity for young aspiring photographers on the continent.AWF is seeking grants and partnerships to enable more African people to participate next year, and to make nature photography competitions more accessible to those unable to pay or buy expensive camera equipment, allowing people to use whatever camera they have and photograph wildlife in urban environments.
Sebunya hopes that the competition can open up a dialogue about conservation and why it’s so important for Africa’s future. Many people in Africa look at conservation as a thing done by and for foreigners, said Sebunya. While he praised the work of international NGOs,he emphasized that it’s vital that African voices are heard and for local people to lead conservation efforts.

Earth Day is April 22.Every year, people around the world observe the day by helping to care for the environment. They carry out all kinds of activities in an effort to better the planet’s health.
One way to support this goal is to grow plants native to your area. This helps wildlife like birds and insects that evolved alongside native plants. For many of these animals, plant pollen(花粉) is their food.Native pollinators often cannot recognize non-native plants as food. This means they do not collect the pollen or spread plants’ seeds.Planting non-native species creates so-called “food deserts” for pollinators including bees, birds, bats, butterflies and more.
Doug Taamy is a professor of entomology at the University of Delaware.Entomology is the study of insects. He found that non-native plant species can harm the natural food chain, which can lead to a collapse of the environment.“Plant choice matters,” he said.“The plants we choose to landscape our properties should be determined by how much life can live there.”
Humans depend strongly on insects.Without them,we would have no flowering plants, which would harm the food web that supports important animals.Birds, for example, depend on plants for food and spread their seeds while keeping the populations of harmful insects down.
Insects support plants that provide oxygen, clean our water, capture carbon and add nutrients to the soil. That builds topsoil and prevents flooding.Without insects, the biosphere—the living parts of the Earth—would rot because of the loss of insect decomposers.Humans simply could not survive that,Tallamy said.
In addition to providing food and habitat for insects and other wildlife, native plants are able to grow easily and do not require much care. That means less watering and less fertilizing. The situation is a win-win for gardeners and pollinators.

How to Control Weeds When Planting
No matter what you choose to grow in the garden,at some point, you will have to deal with unwanted plants, known as weeds. 1 Even a tomato plant can become a weed if it grows where you don’t want it to.
2 Weeds can bring many problems. They steal nutrients and water.Weeds can also bring harmful bugs and diseases into your garden. Some weeds release chemicals that can slow the growth of nearby plants.
It is important to note that some weeds are not all bad.In fact, you can eat them.Dandelions(蒲公英) are also viewed as a weed by many people. 3 And you can eat or use nearly every part of the plant. But even other weeds can do good things in our garden. The roots of weeds can prevent the soil from being blown away by wind or washed away by rain.
However, left to grow on their own, weeds can take over a garden. To slow the growth of weeds, add a layer of weed-free,organic material to the top of your garden, around the plants. 4
A simple and effective method of weed control is to break up the surface layer of the soil. But you must do this regularly.Do not turn the soil over. 5 If you turn the soil over, you give those seeds the light and air they need to grow.Probably the best way to fight some weeds is to eat them! Just make sure they are,in fact, eatable.
A.But their leaves are also full of nutrients.
B.This makes it difficult to reshape a garden.
C.A weed is just a plant growing in the wrong place.
D.This improves the soil and keeps weeds from growing.
E.Besides being unwanted, what else do weeds do to a garden
F.Buried in the soil are weed seeds, waiting for the right conditions.
G.So,before we hurry outside to kill all the weeds, consider their good side.
