Julia Butterfly Hill worked at a restaurant. For many years, she was only interested in making money. Then one day she had a serious car accident, which changed her life.Hill said,“I realized I wanted to find a more powerful purpose for being here on this planet.”
As soon as she recovered,Hill traveled to California and she wanted to do something meaningful. There she saw ancient redwood trees, which are the largest trees in the whole world. The wood from redwood trunks is very hard.So the Pacific Lumber Company cut down many of the huge redwoods to use for construction. There are not many forests of these trees left. Many environmental activists want to protect the remaining trees. The redwoods are very important to the environment.
In 2012,Hill learned a group called Earth First was working to protect a particular group of trees. They decided to send someone up into a redwood tree, hoping this would stop the company from cutting the trees down.Julia Butterfly Hill volunteered.
Hill lived in the tree for over two years without ever coming down. Her home was a 6-by-8-foot tree house,180 feet up.It is always cold and wet in a redwood tree. There were even very serious winter storms while Hill was in the tree. The wind and cold almost knocked Hill out of the tree. But she did not fall—she survived.
Finally, after years of arguing, the company decided to protect Luna, the tree Hill lived in.They signed an agreement to never cut down this huge redwood tree or the trees around it.When Hill put her feet on the earth again, she began to cry.But from that moment on Hill hasn’t stopped working to protect the environment.

Hua Sheng and Lu Sheng,a retired Tibetan couple, have become trailblazers(开拓者) of grape growing and winemaking in their old ages.
Lu Sheng learned grape planting and winemaking from her grandmother’s sister.Since they retired, the couple have moved to Lhasa from the village of Yakhadi.Though the fact that the region’s capital, which is 3,600 meters above sea level,is considered unfit for growing grapes,Lu Sheng and Hua Sheng began an ambitious project in 2015,planting grapes in Tsalna,a town in the suburb of Lhasa.
They received support from the local government, which is committed to developing business and the economy. The couple’s project provides jobs for rural residents, and,as a result, the government has considered the project part of its enrichment programs.
“Lhasa is an ideal place for planting French grape varieties that are resistant to cold, drought and disease, and adaptable to high-altitude and open-air planting,” Lu Sheng said.
“Thanks to the plateau’s sunshine and organic planting, our grapes grow very well here in Lhasa. The grapes are a bit sour and sweet, and they have a high anthocyanin(花青素) content,” she said.Anthocyanins, which accumulate(积累) in grape cells and contribute rich color to wine, are water-soluble.
In 2018,Hua Sheng and Lu Sheng expanded their project, planting on nearly 6.67 hectares. In order to familiarize Tibetan farmers with grape planting and winemaking, they taught the skills to local villagers.
“We have successfully taught the local farmers how to grow grapes and make wine over the three years. They now have a new source of income besides traditional farming and herding,” Hua Sheng said.
Yudron,a resident of Nam,said she was grateful to the grape planting project in her village, which has contributed to her income and quality of life.“After working in the vine-yards for years, now we know how to make wine.We drink both barley and grape wine now.We love grape wine more, though,as it is healthier.”

The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up.These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer.“The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the NGO Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
Most people worldwide rely on herbal(药草的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But about 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to a report from the international conservation group Plantlife.Shortages have been reported in China,India,Kenya,Nepal,Tanzania and Uganda.
Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species(入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute.“Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability(可持续性),” the Plantlife report says,“Damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it,but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized.” Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers.
The solution, says the report’s author,Alan Hamilton,is to encourage local people to protect these plants.Ten projects ran by Plantlife in India,Pakistan,China,Nepal,Uganda and Kenya showed this method could succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.
“Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton,“You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.”
Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in London, agrees that medicinal plants are in need of protection.“Not nearly enough is being done.We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.”
32.From the first two paragraphs,we can learn that .
A.millions of people are threatened with cancer
B.most countries see a shortage of herbal medicines
C.about two thirds of medicinal species will disappear
D.a number of medicinal species are in danger of extinction
33.The underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refers to .
A.pollution B.sustainability
C.over-harvesting D.other species’ invasion
34.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Protecting medicinal plants has a long way to go.
B.Local people don’t know how to protect medicinal plants.
C.Ghillean Prance is optimistic about medicinal plants’ future.
D.China has made great progress in protecting medicinal plants.
35.Which of the following is the best title of the passage

I was on a family vacation and our hotel was right beside the sea.I was reading my book by the beach one afternoon when I heard some noise nearby.Curiously,I put aside the book and joined the group of people near the edge of the sea.
I was struck by what I saw. There was a giant turtle(海龟) which was upside down! Four of its huge feet were waving crazily in the air,and its long wrinkled neck was stretching far out of its shell.A thick rope was tied around the turtle and the fisherman held onto the end of it.
Obviously, the turtle was trying to escape. Some standers-by were clicking their cameras enthusiastically, filming the exciting moment. The crowd was thrilled by the scene before them. One strongly-built man found a piece of wood on the sand, carried it towards the turtle and started pushing the turtle’s head with it.When the end of the wood touched the turtle’s head, the turtle took it into its mouth and chewed it up in an instant.
“Wow!” the crowd shouted.“Did you see that I’m glad it wasn’t my arm!” a person from the crowd exclaimed.“Wait till it gets sold and becomes turtle meat!” another joked and the crowd laughed.
Suddenly,I heard a boy’s screaming,“Cease torturing(折磨) it! Get away from the turtle!” We all turned and saw a boy and his father running toward where we were.“All of you are cruel for just standing there and doing nothing to save the turtle! Would you like it if you were forcefully taken away from your homes to be sold and tortured Animals deserve to be treated with kindness too!” the boy shouted at the group of adults standing on the beach.I sensed a slight change of mood in the crowd—a mixture of unease and anger.

第一节
Saturday,April 22,2023 Cloudy
This morning I visited the City Museum, which was impressive to me.
There are several exhibition rooms in the museum, including history, art, science and nature. It is like a book, providing a large amount of information for the visitors. From the things displayed, you can have a close look at the historical development and scientific inventions. The guide gave a vivid explanation for the exhibition. She told many interesting stories behind the things exhibited. Most of the visitors were middle-aged people.
I think it important for the young people to visit museums, which can broaden their horizons, helping them learn more about history and arts.
第二节
Embarrassed as the father was,he was not ashamed of his son.“I apologized for my son’s rudeness. He is just standing up for what he believes in,something that I taught him to do.Please let the turtle go,” he said, addressing the crowd.I could feel something in my heart stirring. Before I knew it,the words had flown out of my mouth,“The boy’s right! Let the turtle go!” The crowd started murmuring. To my surprise, one by one,I heard other voices joining in to let the turtle go.
The fisherman finally agreed to let the turtle go.With many keen eyes fixed on him,he untied the knot in spite of some reluctance. The instant the turtle was freed,it crawled immediately towards the vast sea.The air seemed to be still—there was no previous joking or laughing in the crowd. The crowd thinned. After witnessing the turtle swimming away gracefully in the sunset, the boy left hand in hand with his father, lips curving in a smile.Bathed in the setting sun,I was deeply touched.第一单元测评

I live in San Luis Obispo,California, about three miles from the beach.Every few years, the humpback whales come into the bay for a few days while they’re migrating.
Last November was one of those times. So I invited my friend Liz Cottriel to go out to watch whales.Shortly after we set out in the morning,we had our first whale sighting:two humpback whales swimming towards us.How amazing to be so close to a creature of this size! We followed them at a distance of more like 60 feet away—what I thought was enough.I later found out that it’s recommended to keep 300 feet away.
Suddenly,we were being attacked.A tight package of fish, known as whales’ food, started jumping out of the water into our kayak.Their actions meant they were escaping the whales, which meant that we needed to get out of there too.But before we could paddle to safety, our kayak was lifted out of the water about six feet, held up by massive jaws.We slipped out of the kayak into the whale’s mouth. My body was swallowed.Liz,meanwhile, was looking up directly at the whale’s upper jaw, which she later described as a big white wall.
As the whale’s mouth closed,Liz forced her arm up to block it from crushing her.I felt the creature begin to dive and had no idea how deep we’d be dragged.Still,I didn’t panic.I just kept thinking.I’ve got to fight this.I’ve got to breathe.Whales have enormous mouths but tiny throats.Anything they can’t swallow would be spat right out. That included us.As soon as the whale dipped underwater,it ejected us,and we popped back up onto the surface about a foot apart. The entire near-death experience lasted only about 10 seconds.
We were shaken up by the experience.Liz said her whale-watching days were over. But I had to laugh when I realized I’d brought back souvenirs. When I pulled off my shirt, six silverfish dropped out.

The Oscar-nominated movie Soul(《心灵奇旅》) deals with passion, purpose and the meaning of life—topics that aren’t usually seen in animated films.
The movie centers on Joe,a middle school band teacher who feels unsatisfied because his dream is to be a full-time jazz musician. On the day he finished the biggest concert of his career,Joe nearly dies—but then he gets the chance to return to his body if he can find out the purpose of his life.
Pete Docter, who co-wrote and co-directed the film with Kemp Powers, said the film was inspired by the emotional disorder he experienced after writing and directing Inside Out(《头脑特工队》).“Having so much success in Inside Out,I found myself wondering:Why didn’t it bring me a sense of satisfaction Why couldn’t the success fix everything in my life ” Director Pete Docter said.
Soul created success of its own.The film won the Golden Globe Award for best animated film, and is named for three Academy Awards. But Kemp Powers, who’s also up for an Oscar for his film for One Night in Miami, said Soul is actually meant to challenge traditional ideas of success and failure.“We were trying to help not just Joe,but the whole audience, understand that it’s not about winners or losers and that everyone’s life has value,” Powers said.“That was really a powerful driving force from the very beginning.”
Docter said the film’s message is that life has meaning that goes beyond personal ambition.“The movie’s aim is really to say that we’re already enough,” he said.“We can all walk out of the door and enjoy life without having to achieve or prove anything. And that’s really freeing.”
28.In what way is Soul different from many other animated films
A.It is based on imagination rather than reality.

A recent trend in the entertainment world is to adapt classic works of literature for either TV plays or movies. One argument is that this is to everyone’s benefit,as it introduces people to works they might otherwise never have experienced, while others say that turning books into TV plays or movies not only cheapens the original, but is rarely done successfully. So what do you think
In the past few years,we have seen that several classic works of literature have been adapted for movies. Many people believe that turning a novel into a film is a great idea, but some obviously think otherwise.According to the latter, translating classic works into movies destroys its originality and credibility. In my opinion, literary works can get translated into the screens effectively.
The main challenge that filmmakers face while turning a classic work into a movie is its imaginary world.Generally, the perception(见解) of a book’s imaginary world differs from person to person. And it’s quite a challenge to put all these different perceptions into one frame. But modern technology has made this challenge achievable. For example, the filmmakers used visual effects to successfully adapt Harry Potter movies so visually appealing that their perceptions of Harry Potter changed. Therefore, literary works can be translated into films through technical means.
Also, while making a film, the main focus of makers always remains on the main plotline and characters. But for movies based on literary works, this issue is not there as these movies carry the same basic plotline as it is present in the books. Therefore, directors do not have to spend much time and imagination on the plot of the movie, which makes the adaptation quite easy.
Based on the above arguments,I believe that it is quite possible to make a beautiful movie based on a classic work using modern technologies and a writer’s imagination.
32.What does “the latter” in the second paragraph refer to
A.People who agree with adapting classic works of literature for screens.
B.People who often enjoy reading classic works of literature.
C.People who think it’s not a good idea to adapt classic works for screens.
D.People who can translated literary works into the screens.

D.The use of modern technology in adapting classic works.
34.Why does the author mention the adaption of Harry Potter

How to Master Anxiety with Humour and Laughter
Anxious people very often take themselves and their difficulties too seriously.Having a good laugh is a great way to lighten up. 36 It gets your heart and lungs functioning fast and relaxes your diaphragm—the layer of muscle between your lungs and stomach, which, when you’re anxious, spends a lot of time being hard and tense.
Besides getting you to laugh for a moment, good jokes also help break through black-and-white thinking and open you up to different expectations. When you hear or read a funny story or joke, you are already expecting the unexpected. 37 Momentarily,at least, you have changed your mindset.
38 Note them down so that you can look at them to help break you out of anxious thinking on a later day.Remembering funny experiences from the past is especially helpful because, very often, they weren’t the least bit funny at the time.Maybe you locked yourself out of your home with no money or clothes on.It is a good reminder that even disasters aren’t as extreme as they seem at the time—they can be laughed about when we view them in another way.
On average, happy children laugh over 300 times a day but adults are less than 20. 39 If you have been sad or unhappy, try watching a comedy or reading a book that makes you laugh.Or go for a walk and keep an eye out for something that will at least make you smile—the actions of dogs playing in the park, for instance,or something a young child says. 40
A.It is also a good way to have fun.
B.You can get much more fun than usual from a joke book.
C.So,set yourself the pleasant task of laughing at least five times a day.
D.It can either be a development you can’t predict or a clever punchline.
E.Remind yourself of the 10 funniest things that have ever happened to you.
F.More than that,it is an excellent way of reducing the stress your body goes through.
G.After all, looking out for the funnier side of life will offer you benefits more than just amusement.

There are many friendships in the world that cannot be measured by money, and the friendship between teachers and students belongs to one of them.
In the 1980s,when I was teaching at a high school in the western United States,I met a student named Daniel. He was a great kid from a tough neighborhood.Drugs, fighting and poverty:You name the problem and his neighborhood must have it.
His parents ran a small farm. They were busy all day and night and had no time to take his studies and hobbies into account.A scholarship fund provided his tuition to Catholic High, where he was a great baseball player.
Daniel struggled in the classroom, though. He was bright, but just left behind due to a difficult home environment.After-school tutoring seemed impossible because of baseball practice. Some people suggested Daniel give up sports and concentrate on studies. But,in reality,if he was going to attend college,he would need his sports;so to miss practice and then perform any less than at his best on the field was not wise.
Daniel had a gentle personality and studied very hard.He got along well with his classmates in class. He respected his teachers, who were very concerned about his studies.A fellow teacher,Mrs.Jones, offered to tutor Daniel in math at her home.I asked Daniel to come to my house for other subjects. No one paid us.Mrs.Jones summed it up this way:Pay day doesn’t always come on Mondays.
When we were not working with Daniel to improve his skills for the ACT (American College Test),the coach and Daniel’s dad took him to various colleges to talk with both baseball and football program coaches. He chose the college that offered him scholarships to play both sports. But he needed a good ACT score.

M:I don’t want to hear it.It sounds you’ve spent yourself in a hole.Anyway, student credit cards just lead to impulse spending...as I can see here. And the interest rates of student credit cards are usually sky-high,and if you miss a payment, the rates, well, just jump!Let’s sit down and talk about how you’re going to pay things back, and maybe we can come up with a budget that will help you get out of this mess. That’s the least I can do.
(Text 10)
Healthy relationships allow you to express your individuality, bring out the best in both of you,and encourage growth.Especially if you are in a new relationship,it’s best to set a foundation for a positive and healthy relationship from the start. There are two pieces of advice on it.
The first one, speak up.Don’t expect your partner to be able to read your mind or “figure it out”.If you have a need or want to express something, you need to communicate it yourself. It’s not fair to you or your partner when you don’t communicate your needs.Likewise, don’t hold in the things that bother you.If you don’t know how to start a conversation, say,“There’s something on my mind and I’d like it if you listened.” You can also say,“Something is bothering me and I feel like we should talk about it.”
The second one, listen intently.Part of a healthy relationship is knowing when to talk and when to listen.Develop your listening skills by not interrupting and letting your partner finish their thoughts and feelings.Truly listen, and don’t try to come up with a response while your partner is talking.Use active listening skills by reflecting the content and emotions of what your partner is saying.

第一节
The power of a smile
Smiling is important in our life.A smile can help relieve our stress, making us relaxed and stress-free.
When I was in senior three,I often felt great pressure. Then my teacher recommended that I should face everything in life with a smile.I learned to smile at everything, good or bad,and then I felt a sense of relief as I freed myself from the stress.A smile is contagious.A smiling face will always be greeted with smiling faces.A smile has a magic power, bringing happiness to people around you. When you smile, you appear kind and attractive.
Nobody will refuse to cooperate with someone with a smiling face.Nobody is unwilling to help you when you smile at everyone. Therefore, success will always be accompanied by a smiling face.
第二节
It took months to receive the results of ACT.One afternoon after school, while I was grading papers in my room, there was a noise outside the door.Daniel came in and lifted me out of the seat behind my desk, held me around in the air,and yelled over and over,“I’m going to college! I’m going to college!” Hearing his words,I was so moved that tears ran down my face.
“I guess you got your scores!” I asked excitedly.“Well, yeah!” he laughed.“And guess what I got one point more than I need to be admitted. One point extra.Thank you! Now,where’s Mrs.Jones I’ve got to tell her too!” I had never quite understood what the expression “Pay day doesn’t always come on Mondays” meant. But it was clear to me the instant Daniel ran into the room to announce his news.No amount of money could ever replace my joy when I heard the good news that a boy finally had a chance at a better life.第三单元测评

As I put down the exercise equipment,my brain tries to focus on what my trainer has said.
“Describe that to me,” asked Rob.He is looking for an answer that required me to connect my brain to my body.
Yes,I know.My brain is connected to my body—the thing that has been carrying my head around for the last 56 years.Since completing my undergraduate degree,I have been increasingly immobilized by my working life.Sitting still at a desk, staring at a screen,it’s mostly through my fingers that I connect to my brain.
“I felt great,” I reply.“I could feel it in my back.” Rob is quick to encourage and set up more weight. Then cheerfully he’ll say “okay, next set.”
Every accomplishment in my life has been entered in my head—grades, degrees, promotions, published papers and teaching. But on reflection,I wasn’t paying much attention to my body.
Weightlifting is different.Rob is a trainer and manager at my local gym,my guide in helping me with a single goal—get strong.Despite my age, size and beginner status,Rob has made me feel safe.He is always close by,watching and posing questions.Like “Where did you feel that ” or the more general request,“Describe that for me.”
Early on,I took these as rote pleasantries.Over time,I realized he wanted more than just routine answers.Having shown me how to do an exercise,Rob would encourage me to think about the muscle or chain of muscles as they moved. The questions were a test of that connection.Gradually,I started thinking my way back into my body. Not my body as a whole but as individual, connections to newly identified places.Intentionally.Specifically.Magically.It’s surprisingly difficult.
I am five months into a new way of living with this 56-year-old body.It talks to me in a totally different way now.It reminds me of my capabilities,my muscles calling me to move, demanding to be challenged. And I long to continue this dialogue so that I’m ready the next time Rob says:“Describe that to me.”

As race season approaches, many runners have the same goal:go faster. But in a study published in the journal Current Biology, researchers show that speeding up might require us to resist our natural biology.By combining data from runners monitored in a lab along with 37,000 runs recorded on wearable fitness trackers, scientists have found that humans’ natural tendency is to run at a speed that conserves caloric loss—something that racers seeking to shave time off their miles will have to get over.
The research group has been studying the mechanics of running in labs for 15 years but hadn’t gotten a chance to study running in the wild before.“We joined the two datasets to gain new insights and combine the more messy wearable data with the gold standard lab experiments to learn about how people run out,” says co-author Jennifer Hicks.
What surprised the team was the consistency they found across the combined datasets.“We had assumed earlier that people ran faster for shorter distances and then would slow their pace for longer distances,” says first author Jessica Selinger. But this wasn’t the case. Most of the runners analyzed stuck with the same speed, whether they were going for a short run or a long one over ten kilometres.
From an evolutionary (进化) standpoint,it makes sense that people would run at the speed that uses the least amount of energy. This caloric conservation is something that has been observed across the animal kingdom. But humans’ reasons for running have changed, and if the goal is speed, there are some tricks runners can use.
Listening to music with a faster pace has been shown to help speed up stride (步伐) frequency, which increases running speed. In addition, picking faster running partners can give you a boost.
Hicks hopes that having large pools of fitness data from wearables will help researchers gain insights about populations.“You can look at connections with the built environment and access to leisure resources and start to layer all of that data to really understand how to improve physical activity and health more broadly,” says Hicks.

“What am I doing wrong ” Jasmine Wilson thought to herself as she breathed heavily. And her breaths could be heard from nearby but were drowned out by the firm steps of several pairs of feet hitting the ground, each desperately pushing forward to get to the finishing line before the other. It was her first track meeting, and she had almost given up midway through the race.
She didn’t know why she decided to choose track and field as an after-school activity. As many times as she thought out her reasons as to why she chose to do a sport that requires a lot of hard training instead of something easier, she simply assumed that since it was from her interest, she was willing to try it out.
Track practices were much harder than she thought and very exhausting. At least, that’s what it felt like to her. When she observed her teammates, they were effortlessly working hard. She wanted to be like them, but it was difficult.
“Ms.Wilson,do you have a goal in mind ” Smith Jones, the coach of the track team asked Jasmine one day after practice.“I just want you to think about that. What are you running for Who are you running for What will you get out of this experience, and how will that help your overall goal These are questions that you really need to consider,Ms.Wilson.” The older woman placed a hand on Jasmine’s shoulder with a firm look.“You don’t have to answer me right now,but I look forward to finding it out from you.”
Now,at the race, small beads of sweat ran down the sides of her flushed face and dripped onto the faded letters of the high school track team’s uniform, which was close to her skin.Jasmine could barely focus on the present moment because her heart was pounding too loud in her ears.
“Wilson!Ms.Wilson, are you alright ” The familiar voice made her come back to her senses.

(Text 4)
M:Mr Black is driving me crazy!I have tried my best, but he is always saying I am still far from success.

(Text 5)
W:What do you think is the best way to get to our branch office in New York

M:Yeah.Actually, one of the problems is that I actually exercise a lot,so maybe it’s my diet.
W:It could be and so in that case you might want to eat something perhaps more nutritious or maybe even less of what you do eat.Maybe,I eat three meals a day and I try not to snack in between.
M:That’s pretty tough!Actually, you see my problem is that I like junk food.I have to choose, either I eat less or I eat a better diet. What do you think is more important
W:I think if you are exercising then you should just eat what you want and eat less.
M:Eat less.OK.This is going to be tough.
(Text 9)
M:Hi,Jenny.So,where are you from

W:Oh yeah Where are some of the places you’ve lived
M:Mostly,we were overseas. We spent a total of ten years in Korea,Germany, and Okinawa,Japan. We were transferred back to the States three years ago,but I think my parents would have liked to live overseas for at least 20 more years.
W:Wow.It sounds like you’ve had an interesting life. So,what do you do now
M:I’m a student at Purdue University.
W:Oh really What are you studying
M:I’m majoring in psychology. How about you What do you do

Technology companies usually focus their benefits on making people stay in the office longer:ping-pong tables, game rooms,on-site training rooms;some even offer laundry services. We,ABC Company, don’t do any of these.Instead,we focus on benefits that get people out of the office as much as possible. We designed our benefits system to reflect that. Here are some of the benefits we offer to get people away from the computer.
Vacation:For the last three years in a row,we’ve worked with a professional travel agent to prepare different travel packages that employees could pick from as a holiday gift.Everything is paid for and included.Specific,pre-arranged trips—whether for a family to go to Disneyland or a couple to tour Spain or singles to go to Lijiang,China—have helped make sure people actually take their vacations.
4-day Summer Weeks:From May through October, everyone who’s been with the company for more than a year gets to work just four days in a week. This started out as “Friday’s off”,but roles like customer support and operations need to cover all hours.
To come up with the best ideas, you need a fresh mind. These travel and me-off benefits help everyone stay sharp.

第二节
When she looked up,it was the coach of their team,Smith Jones.“Coach ” called Jasmine, who looked like she was at the edge of crying.“I can’t do this.It is too tiring and hard, and I couldn’t hold on.” Jasmine was interrupted by the coach,“Don’t you remember those questions I asked you the other day I wanted to see your determination towards reaching your goal! Believe in yourself and your ability to succeed in doing everything and it’ll pay off eventually.Right now, this is just another obstacle that you need to overcome.I believe you.” After hearing her coach’s words,Jasmine was lost in thought.
Jasmine took a deep breath and suddenly felt full of energy.Wiping the beads of sweat away from her face, she now wore a confident expression.“I will get better,no matter how long it takes or hard it may be,” she thought.Thinking of this, she used up all her strength to march on.One circle.Another circle...She kept on running bitterly until she came to her final lap.She gathered up all her strength to rush for the finishing line. The classmates congratulated her,and then she caught a glimpse of her coach, who was smiling at her, nodding.Jasmine ran towards her, giving her a bear hug.“Thank you.It is you who accompany me until the end of the competition and make me realize that I can make it,” exclaimed Jasmine excitedly.第四单元测评

As a lover of classical music from a young age,Mr.Fou began taking piano lessons when he was 7.Mr.Fou made his first stage appearance in 1952.The concert caught the attention of officials in Beijing, who selected him to compete and tour in Eastern Europe.Mr.Fou soon moved to Poland, where he studied at the Warsaw Conservatory(音乐学校) on a scholarship. To prepare for the fifth Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1955,he practiced so diligently that he hurt his fingers and was nearly cut from the first round of the competition.
Mr.Fou was one of the first Chinese pianists to achieve global prominence when he took the third place in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1955.He also won a special prize for his performance of Chopin’s mazurkas(马祖卜舞曲).Almost overnight,he became a national hero.To China,Mr.Fou’s recognition in a well-known international competition was proof that the country could stand on its own artistically in the West.Chinese reporters flocked to interview Mr.Fou,while many others sought out his father,Fu Lei,for advice on child-rearing.
In 1981,a volume of letters written by his father, primarily to Mr.Fou,was published in China.Full of advice, encouragement, life teachings and strict paternal love, the book Fu Lei’s Family Letters became a best-seller in China.Besides influencing a generation of Chinese,Mr.Fu’s words resonated(共鸣) long after his death with the person for whom they were intended.
“My father had a saying that ‘First you must be a person, then an artist, and then a musician, and only then can you be a pianist.’” Mr.Fou once recalled in an interview.“Even now,I believe in this order—that it should be this way and that I am this way.”

Beethoven remains one of the most admired and prolific composers throughout the history. He completed 722 musical works.Unluckily, the master died while still working on his 10th Symphony(交响曲).Now,a team of musicians and scientists have used artificial intelligence (AI) to complete the artist’s final composition.
Dr.Matthias first came up with the idea to complete the composition in 2019.He thought it was an appropriate way to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday in December 2020.He began by recruiting an international team of music experts to help him with the giant task. They included music composer Walter and Dr.Ahmed, the creator of an innovative AI technology for the art market.
Ahmed and his colleagues started the process by familiarizing the AI software initially with a broad range of classical music, and then, narrowed it to just Beethoven’s works.Meanwhile,Walter and his group tried to interpret the rough drafts and the handful of notes that detailed Beethoven’s plans for the 10th Symphony.
The team then began the slow and careful task of feeding the AI software musical notes from the unfinished composition. To stay true to Beethoven’s original composition,Ahmed’s team sent Walter hundreds of AI-generated musical note variations every evening.Walter would listen to them and then select the one that he thought was closest to what the artist would have written. The AI team would add the music and rerun the software to generate the next suggestions. And piece by piece, the team was able to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony!
The composition was firstly released on October 9,2021.Not surprisingly,it caused some controversy (争议).Critics believe technology should not be used to replicate the human creative process.Ahmed and his team agree with their opinions and say their AI software is not out to replace humans—it is just a tool to help artists to express themselves in new ways.

The first attempt to mix visual arts and technology together dates back to the 60s’ when New York-based artists teamed up with scientists and engineers to deliver remarkable performances.Speaking of influential artists mixing tech and arts,Andy Warhol immediately comes to mind.He was among the first to create digital drawings on an Amiga computer in 1985.
When the pandemic hit,the art industry struggled.About 95% of art-related events were canceled while 24% of organizations were forced to reduce staff. And yet,65% of them are still managing to deliver content.Let’s see how technology impacts the art industry and helps it overcome the pandemic-induced challenges.
The artists try to use all kinds of technologies, such as artificial intelligence, robots, sensors and IoT,AR and VR to create. For example, artists Julian Adenauer and Michael Haas created a robot that moves around on a canvas (画布) leaving a colorful trail. This art piece is fixed on the wall of the Berlin Gallery. It is changing every day as the robot keeps moving around, adding color in response to Haas’s idea of creation,“the process of creation is ideally endless.”
There are issues that we need to address when using technology in the arts. For example,in online streaming, paying the intellectual property taxes became a complicated matter.Another concern is who owns the copyrights of AI-generated art.Despite these obstacles, technology widens our horizons whether we produce or simply enjoy arts.If you have an idea of bettering your studio, museum,or art research with technology, don’t hesitate to reach out.
32.What is Andy Warhol’s influence

Art in 21th Century Life
The word “art” usually brings to mind images of white-walled galleries, abstract paintings costing millions of dollars, far removed from our everyday experience. 36
The Internet has changed the idea that art appreciation is only for the noble. 37 You can even visit several museums around the world using virtual reality headsets, without leaving your home.
38 Art has always been a vehicle for self-expression,but social media have made it much easier to share amateur works with the whole world.Where amateur artists or musicians might have shared their works with a circle of friends and family, they can now sell their works to anyone in the world.
“A picture is worth a thousand words” is the motto of data visualization enthusiasts. The amount of information available today can be overwhelming,so some statisticians (数据分析师) made it their mission to present this mass of data using infographics that are easy for the public to understand. 39 Of course, graphs can be abused to mislead the audience,so we need to take care to interpret them in the right way.
Another way that art facilitates education is by helping us to conceptualize things that are invisible to the naked eye. 40 Likewise, the mind-bending concepts in physics such as black holes can be better understood with the help of illustrators who have backgrounds in both art and science.
A.Many platforms of social media help teaching the public art.
B.Yet art is indeed closer than many would believe it to be nowadays.
C.As most of our environment is man-made,everything in it contains art.
D.Netizens are not only consumers of art but creators and participants, too.
E.Biology students would find videos such as “The Inner Life of the Cell” helpful.

What if you were deaf What if you were sick with cancer What if you were suffering from both What would be your last wish
Kenneth was the right unfortunate boy, whose single mother was both deaf and seriously sick with hopeless cancer. How eager her mother was to hear, enjoy, and appreciate the most beautiful sound of the world! For her,it undoubtedly came from her beloved 15-year-old son — Kenneth.
Kenneth was sent by his mother to a famous piano teacher who took him in under her guidance, and Kenneth was devoted to each piano lesson and practiced extremely hard. However, there was one small problem.Kenneth was not musically talented and therefore was very slow in learning. The teacher didn’t have much faith in the boy because of his weakness. However, his mother was very enthusiastic and every week she would send Kenneth to the teacher.
Then one day Kenneth stopped attending the piano lessons. The teacher thought that he had given up and in fact she was quite pleased since she did not give much hope to Kenneth.
Not long after, the piano teacher was given the task to organize a piano concert in the town. She sent out leaflets to invite the students and public to attend the event.Suddenly, she received a call from Kenneth who offered to take part in the concert. The teacher told him that he was not good enough and that he was no longer a student since he had stopped coming for lessons.Kenneth begged her to give him a chance and promised that he would not let her down.
Finally, she gave in and she put him to play last, hoping that he would change his mind at the last minute.
When the big day came, the concert hall was crowded with excited people. The performance was wonderful, the atmosphere was warm, everyone was in a celebratory mood, indulging (沉浸) in the wonderful music feast, and the applause and cheers were warmly received.

Traveling on an airplane can be a very tiring task even in the best of circumstances, which is why when Sophie Murphy boarded a recent flight from Sydney to Melbourne and noticed an “awful tension” in the cabin. She first thought it was caused by typical bad-tempered passengers, but as the flight neared its end,it became obvious that something was very wrong.
A teenage boy with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征) who was traveling with his family had become upset and would not return to his seat, regardless of the cabin crew’s warnings over the loudspeaker that it was almost time to land. The pilot was forced to circle above the airport, delaying the landing—and angering people on the already tense flight.
“If it were a cartoon,” remembered Murphy,“there would have been smoke coming out of people’s ears.”
As the boy’s elderly parents and adult brothers and sisters tried to persuade him to get off the floor and back into his seat, but in vain,Murphy,42—who had been a teacher for more than 20 years—stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane.
She found the boy in the passage between rows of seats, lying on his belly, and lay down on her stomach to face him.She began chatting calmly with him, asking his name, his favourite book, and his favourite characters. He told her he felt sick and she tried to comfort him.
Minutes later,he allowed her to hold his hand—and then together they got properly back into airplane seats.Murphy asked for sick bags, and held them as the boy threw up several times, including on her.As she helped him clean up,she repeatedly told him that everything would be okay and that they’d get through it together.
After the plane was finally able to land,no one was impatient to step off the flight as one might expect.Instead, calmed passengers—obviously following Murphy’s amazing example—allowed the boy and his family to depart first, smiling at them as they passed. His parents tearfully thanked Murphy for what she had done, and a doctor sitting nearby also let her know he had even taken notes on her expert way of handling the situation.

“Luck is a matter of preparation for meeting the opportunity,” said the American talk show host Oprah Winfrey.I’ve never watched her show, but when a self-made billionaire gives life advice it’s probably worth listening to.
Her point is that blind luck is very rare. You may have to be lucky to find a good job these days but that does not mean you should sit at home waiting for the opportunity to come to you.If you’re Chinese, you may already be familiar with the tale of a farmer waiting by a tree stump for a rabbit to run out and break its neck.
A book by the UK psychologist Richard Wiseman, called The Luck Factor, argues we can all make ourselves luckier. It’s not about going to a temple to burn some incense in hopes that the god will give you good fortune, but practical advice you can follow each day.
Wiseman conducted an experiment as part of his studies.First he divided volunteers into two groups:those who said they were lucky in life and those who said they were not.He gave everyone a newspaper and asked them to look through it to count how many photographs it had inside. On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs while the lucky people took just seconds. Why On the second page of the newspaper,a command,“Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper” was written in big letters. The unlucky people mostly did not spot the message.
It’s easy to compare this situation to young persons looking for jobs in a local paper. They might search so hard for one type of position that they miss an even better opportunity.People who are “lucky”,in fact, keep an open mind and don’t go through the same routine every day.
In a word, try to turn bad luck into good.Even if you do fall down and break a leg,the time spent at home can be used wisely to study English.
28.Which of the followings most agrees with the writer’s point
A.All is not gold that shines. B.Rome was not built in a day.
C.A good heart defeats ill fortune. D.Success is for those who are prepared.

C.unlucky people are slow to read D.lucky people are quick-minded
31.The underlined word “spot” is the closest in meaning to “ ”.

We live in a world where we want everything instantly. In this instant world it is hard to succeed in anything. To achieve your goal, you first have to change your life from instantly to persistently (坚持地).
Persistence is the course you need to set. When you change your expectancy from instantly to persistently you will gain an advantage of time that many do not have.Time works against those who live instantly.Opportunities are never seen because when something doesn’t happen instantly people move on to the next thing on their list and consider the current goal a failure.
Persistent people have the advantage of time.It allows them to step back, observe and assess the progress of the goal they are pursuing. Some things take longer to develop;some just need to be left there for a while to find their own way.
When you live instantly, you gain and lose instantly. Many times, you do not know how you got there or how to get back because it is not repeatable. When you live persistently, you learn how things work, how to correct a plan and how to guide it to make it successful. You do not panic because you know you have more than enough time.
Slow down and take time to enjoy the journey. If what you are doing is not fun then stop doing it and do something else.
Everything you do should be in pursuit of a better tomorrow than you had yesterday. You should take time to develop your abilities to reach your goals.Do not get discouraged just because your success is not instant.
Celebrate each step along the way.People who live instantly don’t take time to appreciate what they have accomplished. They are just looking for the next thing that they can get instantly.

Traffic Regulation and Accident Prevention
We live in a remarkable time, and many of the once fatal diseases can now be cured with modern medicine and surgery. 36 Expectations of life have greatly increased. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible killing of men, women and children on the roads.Man fights against the motor-car.It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. 37
Nothing can seriously increase your risk of potentially fatal car accidents than speeding and failing to pay attention to weather conditions. 38 There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities.Usually quiet and pleasant people, when they are behind the steering wheel, will become unrecognizable. They are impolite,aggressive,self-willed like two-year-olds,completely selfish. All their hidden frustrations, disappointments, and jealousy seem to be caused by driving.
39 It’s all for his own convenience.Due to a serious tragedy, the city is almost uninhabitable and the huge parking lot makes the town ugly. The destruction of rural areas and the annual mass killings are just a statistic, easily forgotten. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are not strict and even the strictest are not strict enough.
Traffic rules are for everyone to follow under any circumstances, and no one can make an exception unless you make a joke of your own life.Universally accepted standards can only have a significant beneficial on the incidence of accidents.Governments should develop safety codes for manufacturers. 40 These measures may sound cruel. However,if these measures result in a reduction in the loss of life every year, they should certainly not be considered serious. After all,the world belongs to humans, not cars.
A.There are five reasons for the accident and you are guilty.
B.Every year thousands of people are horribly killed, and we sit still and let it happen.
C.Surprisingly, society should smile at the driver and forgive him.
D.Someone has rightly said that when a person is sitting behind the steering wheel, his car becomes an extension of his personality.
E.All advertisements that emphasize power and performance should be banned.
F.It is time to develop a universal norm to reduce this senseless waste of human life.
G.It is almost certain that one day a cure will be found for the rest of the diseases.

I was in low spirits all day, washing and drying clothes, and thinking how love had disappeared from my life.As hanging up the last of my husband’s shirts,I looked at the clock—4:30.Jonathan’s class ended at 3:15.It was late and I hurriedly drove to the school.
I was out of breath by the time I knocked on the teacher’s door.I peered through the glass. She opened the door and let me in.
“I want to talk to you about Jonathan,” she said.I prepared myself for the worst.Nothing would have surprised me.“Did you know Jonathan brought flowers to school today ” she asked.I nodded, thinking about my favourite bush and trying to hide the hurt in my eyes.
“Let me tell you what happened yesterday,” the teacher continued.“See that little girl ” I saw a bright-eyed child laugh and point to a colourful picture taped to the wall.“Well, yesterday she was almost crazy. Her mother and father are going through a divorce. She told me she didn’t want to live. She wished she could die.I did all I could to comfort her,but it only seemed to make matters worse.”

My first job was in Jessif,in the east of Poland.I was promised that I wasn’t going to have to teach any beginners or any little children because it was my first job.I was promptly given the beginners. On my first day of teaching I was given a book which said,“Ah!Go into the classroom and say hello to the children and they’ll all say hello back to you and wave.” I walked into a class of five four-year-olds,followed by all their mothers and grandmothers and I said “Hello” and they all burst into tears.I spent half the lesson trying to get them to say “Hello” to each other and stop them from crying while all the grandmothers stood around and stared at me.I finally finished off my singing Happy Princess Song, all on my own, with crying children to accompany me.It was one of the worst days of my life.I could feel the same with all the children though, because I wanted to sit on the floor and cry with them by the end of it.Then I realized that teaching kids was never going to be my career.I had some other classes as well but quit soon after that and moved onto adults who cry slightly less.Yeah, that was my first teaching experience. Not the best.

写作
第一节
Being An Adult,Being Responsible
I,together with my classmates, attended the coming-of-age ceremony in the school hall, where our teachers and parents witnessed our special process.
After the principal delivered an inspiring speech,we made an oath that we should have a sense of duty for our society as grown-ups from now on.Finally,we walked through the Longmen with our parents, with photos taken to mark this special occasion.
This once-in-a-lifetime ceremony is a golden opportunity to impress upon us students the significance of shouldering responsibility and fulfilling our obligation as a young adult.I am determined to study hard.Only in this way can I equip myself for the future of our society.
第二节
I knew at once what had happened and felt my heart swell with pride.I smiled at the teacher.“Thank you,” I said, reaching for Jonathan’s hand,“you’ve made my day.” While driving back home,I still recalled the love Jonathan showed the little girl and realized that it was what I needed to show my family members. Therefore, when my husband came back home,I snapped a small limb bristling with hot pink azaleas off the bush.I handed him the flowers.“I love you,” I said.
In the evening,my husband and I sat in the sitting room, talking about the bush.We used to love azaleas because they were beautiful, but on that day we knew that they could also bring hope and love to others. We decided to plant more azaleas. At this moment,Jonathan came up behind us,apologizing for pulling up our favourite azalea. With tears in my eyes,I hold him in my arms.“You did the right thing,my son,” I said.“We are proud of you.”第六单元测评

Bats are nature’s pest patrol. They consume large quantities of night flying insects, including some that annoy farmers. But habitat loss and climate change,as well as infectious diseases, are reducing bats’ ability to do their job.A new study adds another item to the list:wildfires. But not too many — too few.
In California’s Sierra Nevada ecosystem, bats have adapted to occasional wildfires. But fire-prevention policies have kept some areas unburned for unusually long periods, resulting in denser (更稠密的) forests with thicker undergrowth.“We wanted to see how these changes in how fires are burning might be influencing bat biodiversity,” says Zack Steel, who conducted the research.
Steel and his colleagues used microphones to count bats by recording their distinctive echolocation (回声定位) over four years at six sites in the Sierra Nevada.Three of the areas had recently endured fires, and three remained unburned.
Seventeen bat species call these forests home. The study revealed that eight of them tended to frequent the unburned patches, whereas 11 used the burned areas (some species visited both).“We expected to see Group A (the more open-habitat-adapted-species) benefiting from fire and Group B (the more clutter-adapted species) being negatively affected by fire, preferring the unburned areas,” Steel says.“But even some of those species were occurring more often in burned areas.”
“When there’s lots of variation in habitats after a fire, many species benefit in different ways,” says University of Connecticut biologist Andrew Stillman.“On the whole, the community becomes more diverse, and that’s a good thing for the landscape.”
Putting out wildfires early leads to some species losing out on food and resources.
“Fire is a natural part of the ecosystem, and many animals require the disturbance from fire to create the types of habitat that they need,” Stillman adds.“It demonstrates another negative consequence of keeping wildfires away from fire-adapted forests in California.”
24.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 mean
A.Too few bat species have survived. B.Too few wildfires have occurred.

26.What benefits the bats in Sierra Nevada ecosystem according to the study
A.Free of wildfires. B.Variation in habitats.
C.Thicker forests. D.Fire-prevention policies.
27.What’s the purpose of the text
A.To analyze effects wildfires have on bats. B.To find out the differences among bat groups.
C.To bring forest protection into public attention. D.To show ways to keep the balance of ecosystem.

Winter,a dolphin with an artificial tail, died on November 12,2021,whose story inspired a book and two heartwarming movies. The 16-year-old had been suffering from a terrible disease since November 1,2021.The doctors at Florida’s Clearwater Marine Aquarium (水族馆) tried several life-saving efforts but in vain.
“She’s the strongest little dolphin that I have ever met,and we learned so much from her and have been privileged to have 16 wonderful years with her,” Dr.Shelly Marquardt,a vet(兽医) of the aquarium stated.
Winter’s uplifting story began in December 2005 when her tail got caught in a crab trap line.Florida fisher Jim Savage released the little dolphin and rushed her to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. While the dolphin—fittingly named Winter — survived, her badly-injured tail had to be cut off.
Believing she would be unable to swim, the aquarium’s health experts placed the young dolphin on a special device in the water. However,Winter was not going to let a “minor” inconvenience like a missing tail get in her way.She began using her broken tail to swim from side to side. While seeing the stubborn dolphin moving was encouraging, doctors feared it would hurt her back.Fortunately, two experts at the Hanger Clinic heard about Winter’s sad situation and made her an artificial tail.
Winter gave hope to people worldwide, especially those living with disabilities.Grace Savage was one of them. The grandniece of the fisher who rescued the dolphin in 2005 suffers from infantile paralysis (小儿麻痹症).“She gives us inspiration to never give up,” Savage told FOX 13 during her 2019 aquarium visit.
28.What may have caused the death of Winter

C.Her unbearable suffering. D.Her badly-injured tail.
29.What can we learn about Winter from the passage
A.Shelly offered immediate rescue to release her.
B.Jim Savage cut off Winter’s tail to save her life.
C.Winter was not discouraged by physical disability.
D.The vets in the aquarium made her an artificial tail.
30.Why is Grace Savage mentioned in the last paragraph
A.To show Winter’s positive effects on humans. B.To recall the comments Grace made on Winter.
C.To prove the aquarium is a good place to visit. D.To tell how Grace lived with disabilities bravely.
31.Which of the following can best describe Winter’s story
A.Adversity makes a man wise,not rich.
B.What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.
C.The greater the difficulty, the greater the glory.
D.All things in their being are good for something.

The fossil discovery in Victoria now shows that monk seals were widespread in Australasia in the past.
“Monk seals are one of the rarest and most endangered marine mammals (海洋哺乳动物) alive today, but this wasn’t always the case,” according to lead study author Dr.James Rule from Monash University.“Our paper shows that the very endangered monk seals once called Australia home about five million years ago (specifically in Victoria),” he said.
The discovery was made by studying two fossils again from Melbourne Museum’s collections, the identity of which had been a mystery for 40 years.“When we studied them, they turned out to be the oldest evidence of monk seals,” Dr.Rule said.“These fossils, along with the extinct New Zealand species that was discovered last year, double the known diversity of the monk seals,” he said.
According to Dr.Rule, monk seals disappeared in Australasia three million years ago,and they only lived in the tropics and the Mediterranean after temperatures fell during the Ice Ages. This left monk seals on the edge of disappearance after being overhunted by humans, with about 2,000 members left.
The discovery of New Zealand species and Australian monk seals led the researchers to restudy the origin of the group.“Our research shows that monk seals began in Australia,” Dr.Rule said.“This is different from every theory previously put forward by scientists.”
Previous research has theorized climate change led to the disappearance of many ancient seals in the Southern Hemisphere. This would have included New Zealand’s and Australian monk seals.“This suggests the world’s last two species of monk seal are also at risk from climate change,” Dr.Rule said.If sea level continues to rise, the beaches monk seals rely on for resting and raising young ones may disappear.
32.What does the new discovery show about monk seals
A.Their living habits. B.Their growth process.
C.Their early appearance. D.Their ways of getting food.
33.What do we know about the two fossils from Melbourne Museum
A.Researchers found it hard to keep them in good condition.
B.Researchers managed to identify them after many years.
C.They were once thought to be fossils of birds.
D.They were first discovered last year.
34.What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 4 probably refer to
A.Fighting water pollution. B.Suffering from a lack of food.
C.Having limited living places. D.Facing increasing natural enemies.
35.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph
A.Climate change always threatens monk seals’ survival.
B.Scientists can now measure the rate of global warming.
C.Human activity in Australia should be strictly limited.
D.People need to help raise young monk seals.

What Your Dog Is Really Thinking
Reading a pup’s body language requires experience and expert guidance.Zazie Todd,a dog trainer and founder of the blog Companion Animal Psychology, considers how to figure out the dogs’ behaviour.
If your dog licks its mouth
They’re stressed.Recently, two European studies have highlighted the meaning of this licking. One found that it was a dogs’ response to seeing an angry or aggressive human face on a computer screen. 36 .If you spot this sign, try reducing your dog’s stress levels. It could be as simple as giving them more physical space.
If there are fireworks and your dog is shaking
The noises are frightening. 37 .But a surprising number of people don’t realize that shaking and trembling (and hiding or seeking out people) are signs of fear.Whereas only a quarter of owners say their dog is afraid of loud noises, half report these behavioural signs.
38
They’re anxious.Obvious signs of an unhappy dog include hiding or trying to leave the exam room, but commonly missed signs range from a tucked tail and lowered ears to trembling. If your dog gets stressed at appointments, ask what can be done. Many vets now use food to make the experience more fun.
If your dog leans into you during a petting session
39 .If you’re unsure whether a dog is enjoying being petted, stop, and then watch their reaction. If they choose to wander off,the session is over.Other signs of discomfort include smelling the floor, looking away and breathing heavily. However,if they lean on you or scratch at you to get more hugs, continue! 40 .
A.They like it
B.They hate it
C.This is a common reaction
D.If you’re at the vet and your dog’s tail is down
E.If your dog looks guilty when you walk in the door and see a mess
F.Preferred spots on their bodies are to either side of the chest and under the chin
G.The other determined that dogs lick their mouths —and also look away — in response to a mild threat

In July of 2021,Julia,a curious 5-year-old little girl, followed her dad into the unforgiving and dangerous Siberian wilderness near their home located in the remote region of the Sakha Republic.
At first,Julia’s mother May believed Julia had gone with her father to visit her grandma.Unfortunately, the area they lived in was so remote that it did not have cell phone service,so she could not call her husband to confirm. It was only after her husband returned two days later that they realized Julia had made her way into the thick forest unnoticed and became lost.
Panicked and concerned,Julia’s family instantly called for help.It wasn’t long before hundreds of people showed up to seek the girl.Rescue workers, police, firefighters, and volunteers searched like crazy for the girl. They also got the aid of six search dogs, and a helicopter with technology to look for Julia in the dark but with no luck after a day’s search.
Julia’s family feared the worst, primarily since the area was well known for wild animals such as wolves and bears. Not to mention the fact that it was Siberia, which meant it got bitterly cold at night. Many of the rescuers were forced to face the reality that the girl was most likely dead. They knew a small child wouldn’t last long out in the cold with little to protect her.
Early in the next morning, the police officer David who was in charge of the search hurried to Julia’s house to ask May for more details. It suddenly occurred to May that a neighborhood dog, which Julia named Nadia, would probably follow her into the forest.
“Julia spares her food and feeds Nadia every day and gradually Julia has developed a close bond with the wandering dog. They are attached to each other and always inseparable. They must be together now, aren’t they ” May looked into David’s eyes and asked eagerly.

Good evening, and welcome to the British Council. My name is John Parker and I’ve been asked to talk to you briefly about certain aspects of life in the UK before you actually go there. So I’m going to talk first about the best ways of making social contacts there. Now you might be wondering why it should be necessary. After all,we meet people all the time. But when you’re living in a foreign country it can be more difficult, not just because of the language, but because customs may be different. If you’re going to work in the UK you will probably be living in a private house,so it won’t be quite so easy to meet people. But there are still things that you can do to help yourself.First of all,you can get involved in activities in your local community, join a group of some kind. For example, you’ll probably find that there are theatre groups who might be looking for actors, set designers and so on.Or if you like the idea of finding out about local history there’ll be a group for that too. These are just examples. And the best places to get information about things like this are either the town hall or the public library.Libraries in the UK perform quite a broad range of functions nowadays—they’re not just confined to lending books, although that’s their main role of course.

第一节
Dear schoolmates,
International Day for Biological Diversity is on 22nd,May every year.I am writing to appeal to conserving creatures in the world.
As we know from this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity, there are ten endangered plants. The key reason for the extinction is that we human beings are always polluting too much and over destroying forests for fuel.To save the world’s creatures,we should advertise low-carbon life.
We sincerely advocate that we go to school on foot or by bike as much as possible every day.Furthermore,we had better make sure people are informed of the danger of creatures’ extinction.

第二节
David was about to reply when a dog ran into the house.“It’s Nadia.” May exclaimed in surprise, racing over and holding Nadia’s neck.Exhausted and out of breath, the dog bit May’s sleeve and signed to her to follow it.“Nadia must know where Julia e on!” David said firmly.May picked up a blanket and hurried to set out with David. With Nadia leading the way through the forest, they eventually entered a secret cave.
In the cave lay Julia, still alive.“Julia!” Covering Julia with the blanket,May called Julia constantly, but Julia was too weak to speak.David instantly carried her outside onto the helicopter he had contacted.Julia was saved in time and then told the whole story. The first day she wandered in the forest with Nadia, she got lost and hid in the cave.Nadia got her some fruit and tried to keep animals at bay. When Julia learned it was Nadia that returned to bring help back, her face lit up with happiness and gratitude.
