Shoton Festival 雪顿节
Shoton or Sho Dun Festival is well-known in Tibet’s culture and is one of the most significant events as well. This seven-day-long event begins from the 29th Day in the sixth month of the Lunar Tibetan calendar. It mostly covers the area of Tibet, including particular provinces like the Yunnan, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Gansu provinces. People follow the old-time traditions during this period, and thousands of visitors travel to the festival when it occurs.
The festival of “Sho Dun” starts when you hear a sound of a sutra bugle throughout the well-known Drepung Monastery. With this signal, around 100 lamas start moving with the display of a huge Qamba or Maitreya Buddha. During this period, the mulberry smoke starts coming out from different directions, and sutra reading continues. Slowly, the lamas exhibit the large Thangka, and people move closer for white Hada offerings.
After the Buddha exhibition ends, the families and individuals visiting this festival can enjoy a picnic at the Norbulingka in the western of Lhasa, Tibet. The participants and event directors dress up in traditional Tibetan clothes and reach the area early. They begin setting up the tents, and prepare the food and drinks. Later, people celebrate at the location, drinking Qingke Liquor, butter tea, and yogurt.
Tibetan Opera Performance begins after the Thangka exhibition, and the fun lasts for many days. During this period, the performers, both professional and students, perform Tibetan shows for the gathered public in Norbulingka Park. You can learn different traditional dance techniques that the Tibetan artists perform at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. Also, a lot of the famous Tibetan Opera groups perform during this festival. The park’s entire area is full of groups of families and friends partying together.

Risk and Adventure Add up to Fun at the Park for Kids
公园的冒险活动让孩子嗨起来
Kids want to take risks and have adventures in parks, with features like flying foxes, trees for climbing, on their wishlists, new research has found.
The national study into suburban parks and playgrounds also found teens preferred places to hang out with friends, sports courts and cafes, while older adults wanted to relax in their parks.
Associate Professor Jenny Veitch and her team from Deakin University found that while children, teenagers and older adults all looked for different features in parks, all age groups benefited from well-designed urban spaces that catered for play and relaxation.
Prof Veitch said the findings were important because many parks were a not used fully resource in the urban landscape.
“Covid-19 reminds us of the critical role parks play in our community,” she said. “For many people during lockdown, visiting a nearby park has been one of the highlights of the day. They are a free space, easy to access and can have a great impact on the health and wellbeing.”
The study surveyed more than 1700 people and found well-designed parks should include different features for different age groups.
“Children like opportunities for physical challenge and risk and adventure, such as flying foxes, adventure playgrounds, and trees for climbing,” Prof Veitch said. “Teenagers like places to hang out with friends, sports courts, grassy open spaces, and cafes. Older adults enjoy more peaceful and relaxed settings with walking paths, shady trees and birdlife.”
The study found that planners and designers needed access to research that highlighted how to get the most value from spending on park refurbishments.
“In a previous park refurbishment study, a cost-benefit analysis showed it cost 58 cents to gain an additional hour of moderate exercise per person,” Prof Veitch said. “Many places do spend a lot of money on parks, but it must be the right expense that achieves the well-designed, attractive environments that are wanted by the public. Otherwise, we are wasting valuable space and money.”
Prof Veitch said that creating active environments that promote physical activity was a global priority, given the international trend to crowded urban living and rising obesity levels.
