Guiding ideology and theoretical basis The general senior high school English curriculum is part of the basic school education that aims to implement the Party’s education policy comprehensively, fulfill the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, develop students’ English subject core competencies, and cultivate talents and successors for the socialist cause. The general senior high school English curriculum clearly points out that : Rationales are: developing students’ English subject core competencies and implementing the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education; building a common foundation for general senior high school English learning while meeting students’ needs of individualized development; adopting an activity-based approach to English learning and focusing on improving students’ ability in learning and using English; improving the English curriculum evaluation system and promoting the effective formation of core competencies; emphasizing the use of modern information technology to enrich English learning resources.
Analysis of the teaching materials The theme of this Unit is “Festivals and celebrations”. Festival is a kind of cultural phenomenon which is formed and developed by a country and a nation in the long historical process. Festivals have profound spiritual connotations. By learning something about festivals, students can not only broaden their horizons, build up their cultural accumulation and promote language expression, but also enhance cultural identity and fully understand cultural differences. In addition, students’ awareness and ability of cross-cultural communication will be developed. The Video Time is the last period of this unit and a special plate designed at the end of each unit in the new textbook. The aim is to show the new approach to language learning and application in the new media era, which is called “viewing” put forward in the new curriculum standard. The video time of this unit is about the Lantern Festival. Watching the video and completing related tasks can develop students’ watching skills, mobilize students’ visual perception, develop students’ ability of dealing with information and thinking analysis.
Analysis of the students This is the second term for senior students in the first grade. For one thing, they have adapted to the high school life and been equipped with the basic learning skills after a hard learning semester. For another, they are active and willing to express their views in English. But their ability to express in English needs to be improved and strengthened. Teaching students through watching the video can help them grasp watching skills, master effective learning strategies and methods and let students experience the fun of learning.
