Hi, Mom, a time-travel comedy from Jia Ling who used to be a comedian, is expected to become the No. 2 highest-grossing film in China with a final of RMB 5.17B. It is currently the top earner of this year in China, as well as globally. It is the second highest-grossing film ever at China’s box office, outshone only by the 2017 Chinese action-adventure film Wolf Warrior 2 that earned a total of 5.69 billion yuan.
As the directorial debut of comedy actress Jia Ling, the film is adapted from her 2016 sketch comedy of the same title. The film whose theme is the love between the mother Li Huanying and the daughter Jia Xiaoling reflects on how the daughter misses her late mother, who encouraged Jia to pursue her artistic dreams. Interestingly, the way that Jia showcases her filial piety(孝道) is a bit special as she makes up a time-travel story to show her mother’s love story set in 1981.
In the film, Jia stars as a devoted daughter who, deeply saddened by her mother’s accidental death, finds herself transported back to 1981, where she meets her mother and attempts to improve her fate by making friends with her young mother and using ideas from the future, but her plans don’t always tick all the boxes.
The film is based on the life experience of Jia’s mother who passed away tragically when Jia was young. The director described the film as a tribute to her mother, which brought many moviegoers to tears.
Thanks to Hi, Mom’s powerful performance to date, Jia is already China’s most commercially successful female filmmaker ever.
