One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift.Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap(包装).
On September11th.1958.Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying."I promised you a gift, and here it is." What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own.I played with it day and night.I sang to it.I told it stories.1 told it over and over how much I loved it!
One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it.Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as "hopeless", "pitiful", and "dying", which sounded ominous.
Christmas was coming."Don’t expect any presents this year." Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room."If your baby brother lives, that'll be Christmas enough." As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears.I'd never seen him cry before.
The phone rang early on Christmas morning.Dad jumped out of bed to answer it.From my bedroom I heard him say."What He's all right " He hung up and shouted upstairs."The hospital said we can bring Richard home!" "Thank God.'" I heard Mum cry.
From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car.I had never seen them happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home.I downstairs. My sacks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty; they were filled with love!

The more curious we are about a topic, the easier it is to remember not only information about that topic, but also other unrelated information shown at the same time. A study published in Neuron shows what happens inside our brains when our curiosity is sparked.
Participants in the study were asked to rate(评估) how curious they were to find out the answer to a specific question, such as “What does the term ‘dinosaur’ actually mean ” They were then placed in a magnetic resonance machine (磁共振机) that measures brain activity on the basis of changes in the blood flow when the brain is carrying out certain tasks. They saw the question again followed by the image of a person’s face and were asked to make a specific decision about the person. Finally, they were shown the answer to the question. After the scan, they completed a surprise test on the answers to the questions and also on their ability to recognize the faces shown during the scan.
The research published three key findings. Firstly, when curious to learn the answer to a question people were better at learning that information. The most surprising was that participants had greater recall of the completely irrelevant information—such as the face—shown at the same time. Secondly, when curiosity was encouraged, the research found that there was increased activity in the region of the brain related to memory. And lastly, there was increased activity in the region of the brain connected with reward when curiosity was encouraged.
Behavioral neuroscientist Jee Hyun Kim said more could be done to see whether the different levels of curiosity and different motivations(动机) from person to person have an effect on memory and learning.
Amy Reichelt, a psychology expert, said, “Encouraging curiosity is really important across all ages, from schools to the workplace, and curiosity is especially helpful to children who struggle at school.”

“Your mind is a garden; your thoughts are the seeds. The harvest can either be flowers or weeds,” wrote William Wordsworth, who suggested that the process of gardening mirrors human life. Depending on what we “plant” in our lives, we bloom (茁壮成长) or don’t.
Before you start to work in your garden, it is necessary to have an idea for it. Thinking of what you want to grow in your garden and how to arrange it is a good first step in making your idea a fruitful reality. In life, you should consider what you want to create and what you want to achieve, because your mind garden is like a piece of white paper and the possibilities are endless.
No matter what plants you choose, poor soil isn’t suitable for growth. This is why gardeners take the time and energy to improve the soil before planting. So, creating right soil is important to the realization of your goals and dreams. Luckily, there are countless ways to make your personal bedrock (基石) better. Getting an education is one of the most effective ways, which can help you enrich your life’s soil.
You don’t have to be an expert gardener to understand the meaning of “You harvest what you sow”. When a gardener wants tomatoes, they just need to plant tomato seeds. It is a very clear act that produces an expected result. Each of us has the power to decide which “life seeds” to plant. For example, if you plant ill seeds, it’s likely that you’ll experience pain in return; however, if you plant seeds of kindness and understanding, your life will bloom with happiness and love.
A gardener’s truly hard work begins after the seeds are in the ground because a garden requires a lot of care and attention. Regular watering and weeding are required for a healthy garden. So, to ensure your dreams take root, you should be devoted, aware, and present. After countless hours and energy spent, the crops will grow well and be finally ready to be harvested.
12.Why does the author quote William Wordsworth in paragraph 1
A.To sing the praises of gardening. B.To stress the importance of results.
C.To encourage everyone to plant seeds. D.To compare people’s life to gardening.
13.What is important before gardeners start to work in their gardens
A.Receiving some training in planting.
B.Drawing up a good plan for their gardens.
C.Having the courage to accept the worst result.
D.Doing research on the common local garden plants.
14.What does the author want to express in paragraph 4
A.Your quality of life depends on your action.
B.Your experience can help you understand plants better.
C.Your knowledge of planting will make you a successful gardener.
D.Your choice of soil is the most important part in your gardening.
15.Where can you read this article
A.In a science magazine. B.In a book on life advice.
C.From a daily newspaper. D.From a website on agriculture.

The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window had been smashed, along with his dreams for the future: His backpack and computer were gone.
“Everything important to me was on that computer,” said Fortune, 21, who is studying to become a paramedic(护理人员). “My classwork, every paper I’d written, and all the programs I needed for my paramedic tests. Every letter I was working on for job applications. I felt sick.”
Two days after the theft, another young man was standing outside his apartment, also in Portland. Masoud Almazrouei, 29, is an exchange student from the United Arab Emirates. He had been approached by a man who said he had a computer for sale. Only $200. Almazrouei, who had been in the United States for only a year, admits now that he was naive(天真). But he needed a computer, so he bought it, took it home, and turned it on. Within seconds, he saw files and photographs.
“I wondered who would sell a computer with all of this on it,” he said. “I realized it could be stolen.” Almazrouei found what appeared to be the owner’s cellphone number and called it.
“This guy with a thick accent told me he had my computer,” Fortune said. “He told me the story and said it was his fault. I thought it was a scam(骗局). I told him if he really had the computer, he should take it to the police.”

Moab Music Festival
文中第三段最后一句提到“Competition tickets start at $18, and concert tickets at $23”比赛门票18元,演唱会门票23元,加起来一共41元,故选D。
4.A 5.D 6.C 7.C
根据第二段“On September11th.1958.Mum gave birth to Richard...she put him in my lap, saying."I promised you a gift, and here it is."” 故选A项。
根据“Mum and Dad whispering such words as "hopeless", "pitiful", and "dying"”可知,作者听到爸爸妈妈小声地提到了“不抱希望的”、“可怜的”、“临死的”等字眼,这让作者有一种不详的预感,作者担心弟弟Richard会出事。
根据第四段“ As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears.I'd never seen him cry before.”
根据第一段“One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift.”
根据第二段“Participants in the study were asked to rate how curious they were to find out the answer to a specific question, such as: “What does the term ‘dinosaur’ actually mean ” They were then placed in a magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) machine that measures brain activity, based on changes in blood flow when the brain is performing certain tasks. They saw the question again followed by the image of a person’s face and were asked to make a specific decision about the person. Finally, they were shown the answer to the question. After the MRI scan, they completed a surprise test on the answers to the questions and also on their ability to recognize the faces shown during the scan.(参与研究的人被要求评价他们对某个特定问题的答案的好奇程度,比如:“‘恐龙’这个词到底是什么意思 ”然后,他们被置于一台磁共振成象机中,该机器可以根据大脑执行特定任务时血液流动的变化来测量大脑活动。
根据划线词上文“Firstly, when curious to learn the answer to a question people are better at learning that information.(首先,当人们对一个问题的答案感到好奇时,他们更善于了解这个信息)”以及“Most surprising though was that participants had greater recall of the completely”和划线词后文“such as the face - shown at the same time”由此可知,实验结果表明,参与者对一个问题好奇时,会更善于了解这个信心,而对完全不相关的信息——比如脸——也能更好地回忆。 A. important重要的;B. unrelated无关的;C. detailed详细的;D. obvious明显的。故选B。
根据最后一段“Amy Reichelt, a psychology expert, said both that ‘stimulating curiosity is really important across all ages, from schools to the workplace and to elderly care and that curiosity is especially helpful to children who struggle at school.’”(心理学专家Amy Reichelt说,“激发好奇心对各个年龄段的人都非常重要,从学校到工作场所,再到老人看护,而好奇心对在学校里挣扎的孩子尤其有帮助。”)
根据第一段“The more curious we are about a topic, the easier it is to remember not only information about that topic, but also other unrelated information shown at the same time. A study published in Neuron shows what happens inside our brains when our curiosity is sparked.( 我们对一个话题越好奇,就越容易记住与这个话题有关的信息,也越容易记住同时出现的其他不相关的信息。 根据倒数第二段“Behavioral neuroscientist Jee Hyun Kim said more could be done to see whether the different levels of curiosity and different motivations(动机) from person to person have an effect on memory and learning.”(行为神经科学家Jee Hyun Kim表示,可以做更多的工作来观察不同程度的好奇心和不同的动机是否会对记忆和学习产生影响。)
12.D 13.B 14.A 15.B
根据第一段““Your mind is a garden; your thoughts are the seeds. The harvest can either be flowers or weeds,” wrote William Wordsworth, who suggested that the process of gardening mirrors human life. Depending on what we “plant” in our lives, we bloom (茁壮成长) or don’t.
根据第二段“Before you start to work in your garden, it is necessary to have an idea for it. Thinking of what you want to grow in your garden and how to arrange it is a good first step in making your idea a fruitful reality.
根据第四段的“if you plant ill seeds, it’s likely that you’ll experience pain in return; however, if you plant seeds of kindness and understanding, your life will bloom with happiness and love. 故选A项。

47.Paragraph 1
Fortune called and thanked Almazrouei and insisted on paying him a reward of $200, the money he was out. Almazrouei refused. He said it was his mistake to buy the computer from someone he didn’t know and he was the one to shoulder the responsibility. More importantly, he said, it was his honor to return the property to the rightful owner. “I saw a photo of this man in his paramedic uniform,” Almazrouei said. “They help people. He is a good man. I don’t want my money back.”
Paragraph 2
A story about the two young men’s encounter made it to the local papers. Overnight, Almazrouei became a household name and received numerous compliments for his honesty and kindness. One day he got a call from the president of Portland State University, where Almazrouei is studying economics. Impressed with his student’s integrity, the president gave Almazrouei a new MacBook Pro. “We thought since you gave back the laptop, we should give you a laptop so that you’ll have one,” He told Almazrouei. “We’re very proud of you. It was a great story, and you did the right thing.”
