(1)need 是一个常见的动词,表示“需要”之意。它既可以作实义动词,也可以作情态动词。其具体用法如下:

动词不定式
动词不定式是一种非谓语动词形式,在句中不能作谓语,没有人称和数的变化。通常由“to+动词原形”构成,其中to是不定式符号,有些情况下可以省略,即不带to的不定式。
基本形式:to+动词原形
否定形式:not + to do
动词不定式具有名词、形容词和副词的特征,因此可以在句中作主语、宾语、宾语补足语、表语、定语和状语等。
一、 作宾语
动词不定式(短语)可以放在一些及物动词后面用作宾语,能以动词不定式作宾语的动词有:begin, want, remember, agree, learn, like, decide, fail, hope, expect, plan, choose, need, forget, refuse等。
I want to tell you a story.
They begin to work at eight every morning.
Don’t forget to lock the door.

二、 作宾语补足语
动词不定式作宾语补足语,表示宾语所做的动作,即对宾语的补充说明。可以用动词不定式作宾语补足语的动词有:tell, ask, want, like, invite, encourage, help, expect等。
The teacher asked us to read English for half an hour in the morning.
The teacher often tells Jim not to spend too much time playing computer games.
但在let, make, have, see, watch, hear, feel, notice等感官听觉动词或使役动词后面作宾语补足语的动词, 其不定式一般要省略动词不定式符号“to”。
即省略“to”的不定式作宾语补足语:
let / make / have + sb + do sth. 让某人做某事
Let the girl leave here now. 让女孩现在离开。
The boy made the baby cry. 这个把婴儿弄哭了。
see / watch / hear / notice / feel + sb + do sth.

三、作状语
(1)作目的状语。强调动词不定式所表示的目的时,动词不定式可用in order to或so as to+动词原形,其中so as to不用于句首。
He stopped to have a rest. 他停下来去休息。
The bus stopped so as to pick up passengers.
这辆公交车停下来去接乘客。
(2)作结果状语
He woke up only to find everybody gone.
他醒来却发现所有人都走了。
His grandma lived to see the liberation of China. 他的奶奶活到了中国解放。
He is old enough to go to school.
他够年龄上学了。
to do不定式作结果状语的常见句式:
①adj./adv.+enough to do sth. 足够......做某事
②only to do sth.(常表示意外的或事与愿违的结果)结果却......
③too+adj./adv.+to do sth. 太......而不能做某事
【拓展】I am only too glad to have passed the English exam.
若too...to...结构前加only修饰,则不表示“太…而不能…”之意,而是表示“非常”的含义。
我非常高兴通过这次英语考试。
(3)在表示喜、怒、哀、乐等情绪的形容词后作原因状语,说明产生这种情绪的原因。

四、作主语
to do不定式作主语时,可与动名词doing替换,句子谓语动词用第三人称单数;为了避免句子头重脚轻,常用it作形式主语,真正的主语to do不定式放句尾。
To give is better than to take. 奉献比索取好。
It is necessary for us to learn English well. 对我们来说,学好英语是必要的。
五、作表语
to do不定式用在系动词后作表语,一般表示具体的、一次性的动作或说明主语的内容、性质、特征等。
His job is to care for the old. 他的工作是照顾老人。
Her wish is to be a teacher. 她的愿望是当一名老师。
六、作定语
①表示将来的动作
The car to be bought is for his sister. 这辆车将买给他妹妹。
②当一个词是序数词或一个词被序数词 / 形容词最高级 / the next, the very, the only, no, all, any等限定词修饰时常用to do不定式作后置定语修饰该词。
She was the first woman to win the gold medal in the Olympic Games.(第一个获金牌的女性)
