You probably laugh at something you find funny, but how much do you really know about jokes and humour Reader’s Digest(RD)questioned several experts to give us some facts about them.
RD: What’s the oldest joke in the world
“We can’t know the oldest joke in the world because it would have existed earlier than writing.” says Christie Davies, professor of sociology at the University of Reading in the UK. The oldest joke book that’s been found so far is the Greek Philogelos. It dates from the 19th century AD, although the jokes date from an earlier time. According to psychologist Steve Wilson, director of National Humour Month(April in the US), it contains 265 jokes.
RD: Do any people fail to develop a sense of humour
Rod Martin, professor of psychology at the Western University in Canada, believes that while everyone is born without a sense of humour, as we develop, humour and laughter begin to appear. “Of course, some children are more serious, quiet, and less likely to laugh frequently, but this doesn’t mean they don’t have a sense of humour.” And according to Steve Wilson, there are no adults who don’t have a sense of humour. “Almost everyone is able to develop a sense of humour, and I teach people how,” he says.
RD: Do people share a sense of humour unique to their own nation
The sense of humour does differ a lot by country, according to an author named Scott Weems. British humour is thought to be absurd(荒谬的)in nature, while American humour has an aggressive quality. According to a study, Germans are found to find everything funny.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem—inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children's Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. The dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book.
At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.
My mother's call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book. and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
I never told my mother about my “miraculous(奇迹般的)” experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.
4.The author's mother told him to borrow a book in order to ________.
A.encourage him to do more walking B.help cure him of his reading problem
C.let him spend a meaningful summer D.make him learn more about weapons
5.The book caught the author's eye because ________.
A.it contained pretty pictures of animals B.he found its title easy to understand
C.he was reminded of his own dog D.he liked children's stories very much
6.What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A.The author's mother rewarded him with books. B.The author's mother read the same book.
C.The author has become a successful writer. D.The author has had happy summers ever since.
7.Which one could be the best title of the passage
A.My Passion for Reading B.Mum's Strict Order
C.Reunion with My Beagle D.The Charm of a Book

Researchers in Singapore found that eating mushrooms over twice per week could help prevent memory and language problems later in life.
According to the study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, there is a unique antioxidant (抗氧化物质) present in mushrooms that helps protect certain brain functions.
Researchers observed 663 Chinese adults aged over 60 whose diets and lifestyles were tracked from 2011 to 2017. In the study, the participants were asked how often they ate six different types of mushrooms: oyster, shiitake, white button, dried, golden and tinned. The findings showed that eating more than two shares of mushrooms per week somehow lowered the chances of mild cognitive impairment (MCi) by 50% against those who ate fewer than one share.
MCI is a condition that can make people forgetful, affect their memory and cause problems with language, attention and finding the exact position of objects in space. Changes in behavior can be not very noticeable and not serious enough to be known as dementia (痴呆).
Participants who ate more mushrooms were found to perform better in thinking and processing exams and also exhibited a faster processing speed. The advantage was reportedly more apparent in those who ate more than two shares a week or more than 300 grams.
The scientists pointed out, however, that they have yet to put up a direct link between the fungi and brain function.
The researchers also acknowledged that since this study mainly relied on self-reported information on mushroom intake and other dietary factors (因素), further studies may be required.
Still, the lead study author Lei Feng is encouraged by their findings.
“This correlation is surprising and encouraging,” Lei said.
Mushrooms are one of the richest dietary sources of ergothioneine — a matter which humans can’t make on our own.
8.What are the findings in paragraph 3 about
A.Diets and lifestyles. B.The percent of MCI.
C.The types of mushrooms. D.The benefit of eating mushrooms.
9.What can we know about MCI
A.It can strengthen memory. B.It can result in language problems.
C.It can make people get lost. D.It can lessen the chance of forgetfulness.
10.What is the result if students often eat more mushrooms
A.They will take the exams much more easily
B.Their academic performance improves greatly
C.Their thinking ability is better than the majority
D.They will love communicating with others.
11.Where does the text most probably appear
A.Scientific fiction. B.An advertisement.
C.A science report. D.Adult literature.

Australians are pretty bold (大胆的) when it comes to humour. Not afraid of saying something insulting (冒犯的) in the name of a good laugh, they generally don’t hold back. This is always done in fun, however.
You get yourself a haircut before going to meet your new Aussie friend. You’re expecting to be praised, but what you hear is, “Did ya have a fight with a lawnmower (割草机) ” You might take this as an insult, but it’s just your friend’s way of saying that you’ve had a haircut.
Your friend comes knocking at your bedroom door one morning to tell you’re late for class. You were up studying late the night before and you look a mess. Your friend thinks you need to put a brush through your hair before leaving, but instead of just saying so he says, “Wow. Your hair looks like a bush pig’s arse.” He’s trying to be nice.
Australia is one of the cultures on this planet where making fun of someone is a sign of friendship. If you find yourself being made fun of lots, it could be that you’ve scored yourself a whole lot of new friends. Consider yourself lucky — these insults are all part of building a relationship.
Australians also use a lot of sarcasm (讽刺). You foolishly say something that’s obvious. For example, “A six pack of beer is named after the number of beers you get in the pack, the number being six.” A normal answer would be, “That is the most obvious statement I’ve ever heard”, but an Australian would say, “Really You’re so clever.”
Now let’s say your teacher tells you that there will be a test the following day. Australians might say, “Great. I can’t wait to add preparing for a test to my already long to-do list. Thank you for this gift.”
12.What does the author advise you to do when you are laughed at by an Australian
A.Accept it readily.
B.Fight back bravely.
C.Mind your behaviour.
D.End the relationship.
13.What do Australians want to express by saying “Thank you for this gift” in the last paragraph
A.Dislike. B.Worry.
C.Gladness. D.Thankfulness.
14.How is the text mainly developed
A.By telling stories.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By providing examples.
D.By examining differences.
15.According to Paragraphs 2 and 3, Australians try to be humorous .
A.by telling funny jokes
B.by making fun of friends
C.by laughing at themselves
D.by showing unfriendliness

Ever wondered how many calories there are in the human body Or ever wondered why old people have 36 (big) ears than they used to The winners of Ig Nobel Prizes(诺贝尔奖) have got the answers.
The Ig Nobel Prizes, 37 (found) in 1991, are to honour achievements 38 first make people laugh, and then make them think. The ceremony 39 (take) place at Harvard University every year. Winners’ acceptance 40 (speech) are limited to 60 seconds, 41 (strict) monitored by an eight-year-old girl.
The honoured research might seem ridiculous 42 first sight, but that doesn’t mean it lacks scientific value. For example, the research in 2006 on why dry spaghetti tends to break into more than two pieces when it is bent was important for controlling fractures, which could have applications in everything from the design of highways and bridges 43 the engineering of nanotubes. And a follow-up paper 44 (publish) by MIT physicists several years later. But people are more likely to read about the broken spaghetti than to read an academic paper. Even when there is no immediate usefulness, 45 is still good to encourage people to observe and think.

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks(裂纹)that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he had broken the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realised she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a box of chocolates out of a drawer and gave him one.
The mother said, ”This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!“
