The Biggest Stadiums in the World
People have been pouring into stadiums since the days of ancient Greece. In around 80 A.D., the Romans built the Colosseum, which remains the world’s best known stadium and continues to inform contemporary design. Rome’s Colosseum was 157 feet tall and had 80 entrances, seating 50,000 people. However, that was small fry compared with the city’s Circus Maximus, which accommodated around 250,000 people.
These days, safety regulations-not to mention the modern sports fan’s desire for a good view and comfortable seat—tend to keep stadium capacities(容量) slightly lower. Even soccer fans tend to have a seat each; gone are the days of thousands standing to watch the match.
For the biggest stadiums in the world, we have used data supplied by the World Atlas list so far, which ranks them by their stated permanent capacity, as well as updated information from official stadium websites.
All these stadiums are still functional, still open and still hosting the biggest events in world sport.
·Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, Pyongyang D.P.R. Korea. Capacity: 150,000. Opened: May 1,1989.
·Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan, U. S. Capacity: 107,601. Opened: October 1, 1927.
·Beaver Stadium, State College, Pennsylvania, U. S. Capacity: 106,572. Opened: September 17, 1960.
·Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio, U. S. Capacity: 104,944. Opened: October 7,1922.
·Kyle Field, College Station, Texas, U. S. Capacity: 102,512. Opened: September 24, 1927.
1. How many people could the Circus Maximus hold
A. 104,944. B. 107,601. C. About 150,000. D. About 250,000.
2. Of the following stadiums, which is the oldest
A. Michigan Stadium. B. Beaver Stadium. C. Ohio Stadium. D. Kyle Field.
3. What do the listed stadiums have in common

High school often serves to prepare students for a college education, or it might be the last stop on the educational journey for some people. No matter which path one may select, high school life offers students the opportunities to achieve a great deal of learning, get to know themselves, or simply have fun.
In America, high school is a special experience with a culture of its own. Public high schools exist in all communities. Every community in the United States has a public school system, teaching children at primary and secondary levels. These schools are free and supported mainly by taxes, with additional aid from states and governments. Private high schools are a choice for parents who want to give their child a better education. They are often very expensive. Private schools are usually famous for their academic reputation (学术声望). This academic reputation is related to college preparation.
In high school, students study various academic subjects such as English, literature, foreign languages, maths, science, history, geography and so on. Some large high schools have classes that teach job-related subjects like auto mechanics, cooking and others, in order to provide students with skills needed for certain jobs. High school might also offer “honours classes” for particularly smart and sharp students.
Some states give basic skills exams during the last year of the high school process to make sure that certain academic standards are met, but, again, high school curricula (课程) vary greatly among communities.
High school sports, particularly basketball and football, are often organised. Inter-city and cross-town competitions are often held. These competitions are popular, especially in communities that do not have their own professional sports teams. Nearly all high school teams have nicknames: the Knights and the Tigers being some famous examples.
4. Which of the following is not the supporting source of public school
A. Taxes. B. States.
C. Community. D. Governments.
5. Which of the following statements is true about private schools in the United States
A. Private schools are a better choice for parents than public schools.
B. All private high schools in the United States are very expensive.
C. Private schools can usually provide better college preparation.
D. There is a private school system in every community.
6. What does the author say about American high schools
A. Some schools have special classes for smart students.
B. Some states set academic standards in the first year.
C. Sports competitions are only in the city or town.
D. All communities have their own professional sports teams.
7. What might be the best title for the text
A. Life in the USA
B. Education in the USA
C. Public Schools and Private Schools in the USA
D. High Schools in the USA
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. A 7. D

These schools are free and supported mainly by taxes, with additional aid from states and governments.”(美国的每个社区都有一个公立学校系统,教小学和中学的孩子。这些学校是免费的,主要由税收支持,并得到各州和政府的额外援助。)可知,公立学校是免费的,主要的资助来源于税收、各州和政府的额外援助,Community意为“社区”,文章并没有提到它对公立学校的资助。故选C项。

C
Life is hard-even harder than anyone thought it would be. When you were younger, you dreamed of the world being your playground, and you were told that you could do anything and be anyone you wanted. Somehow, though, things haven’t been the smooth sailing that you wanted them to be. The world seems to go against you, and the last thing you want to hear is “Cheer up!”
Still, there’s a couple of things you might not notice about your situation. Next time you’re down, maybe the following will provide motivation.
Firstly, not everything is bad. It’s a well-accepted fact that bad news makes for sensational (极好的) television ratings. The fact is that something negative catches a lot more attention than something positive, and that’s because it’s easy to see things in a negative light. However, that shouldn’t distract you from the bigger picture.
Resist the tunnel vision that results from constant negativity. Remember that even though there’s lots of really nasty stuff going on, you’re surrounded by some pretty awesome stuff as well.
You should also remember other people aren’t you. No one likes being compared to another person. What makes it even worse, if that’s even possible, is when you do it to yourself.
Stop comparing yourself to another person and you’ll realize that you’re much more awesome than you give yourself credit for.
Lastly, failure isn’t where the game stops. So you tried something new, but you didn’t follow through. Frustrated at yourself, you stop trying. As a result, your quality of life goes down terribly. You’ve given up on it, though, because you don’t see the point (since you failed the first time).
Now, you’re an adult. The things you are trying are much more complicated than five-year-old you. However, your behaviour shouldn’t change in the slightest-when you fail in something, that’s just more information in your data bank. You know that method doesn’t work, so try another one! And another one after that! Do this until you figure it out. Giving up is for losers, and you sure aren’t one of those.
8. The author mentioned bad news in order to show that .
A bad news makes people see things in a negative light
B. bad news is more likely to catch people’s eyes
C. bad news attracts people to see positive things
D. bad news has a negative effect on television ratings
9. What does the underlined part “nasty stuff” in Para. 4 probably mean
A. Unstable emotions. B. Important events.
C. Amazing incidents . D. Something unpleasant.
10. How should we view failure according to the passage
A. We will change our behaviour.
B. We will keep trying the old method.
C. We should learn from failure.
D. We should think in a more complicated way.
11. What is the passage mainly about
A. It inspires us to learn from negative experiences.
B. It compares negative and positive experiences.
C. It criticizes those who are affected by bad experiences.
D. It discusses how negative experiences affect others.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文。作者认为我们面对不好的事情不应该沮丧或放弃,而是应该把这当作学习的机会。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段第三句“The fact is that something negative catches a lot more attention than something positive, and that’s because it’s easy to see things in a negative light.(事实是,消极的东西比积极的东西吸引更多的注意力,这是因为人们很容易从消极的角度看待事物。)”可知,作者提到坏消息是为了说明坏消息更容易吸引人们的眼球。故选B。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段第二句中的“you’re surrounded by some pretty awesome stuff as well(你周围也有很多很棒的东西)”和even though可知,此处是指即使有很多让人不愉快的事情,所以nasty stuff意为“让人不愉快的事情”。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第八段第三句到第六句“However, your behaviour shouldn’t change in the slightest-when you fail in something, that’s just more information in your data bank. You know that method doesn’t work, so try another one! And another one after that! Do this until you figure it out.(然而,你的行为不应该有丝毫改变——当你在某件事上失败时,这只是给你的数据库增加更多信息。你知道了那个方法不管用,那就试试另一个吧!再来一个!就这样做,直到你弄清楚为止。)”可知,我们应该从失败中学习。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Still, there’s a couple of things you might not notice about your situation. Next time you’re down, maybe the following will provide motivation.(不过,在你的处境中,有几件事你可能没有注意到。下次你沮丧的时候,也许下面的建议会给你动力。)”,第三段第一句“Firstly, not everything is bad(首先,并非所有事情都是坏的)”,最后一句“However, that shouldn’t distract you from the bigger picture.(然而,这不应该分散你对大局的关注。)”和最后一段“Now, you’re an adult. The things you are trying are much more complicated than five-year-old you. However, your behaviour shouldn’t change in the slightest-when you fail in something, that’s just more information in your data bank. You know that method doesn’t work, so try another one! And another one after that! Do this until you figure it out. Giving up is for losers, and you sure aren’t one of those.(现在,你是成年人了。你正在尝试的事情比5岁的你要复杂得多。然而,你的行为不应该有丝毫改变——当你在某件事上失败时,这只是给你的数据库增加更多信息。你知道了那个方法不管用,那就试试另一个吧!再来一个!就这样做,直到你弄清楚为止。只有失败者才会放弃,而你肯定不是那种人。)”可知,文章主要是为了激励我们从消极的经历中学习。故选A。

He seemed shocked that a total stranger would ask him this. He thought about it for a second and said, “OK, as long as I can follow you.” He introduced me to Amy and he sat her on my back seat. Her father followed me for a few miles and she talked non-stop about what she wanted for Christmas.
As we came back to the store, she said, “This ride is the best Christmas present I could ever receive. I have been in a wheelchair my whole life and didn’t know I could do this.” Then she turned to him and said, “Oh Daddy, I’m going to be OK. Mr. Bryant does all kinds of things—and I will, too.” Her father hugged me and said, “I was sitting here praying for a gift for Amy that would encourage her. She often felt that her life was dull compared to other children. God answered my prayer (祷告) just now. Now I pray that God will bless you for your gift to Amy today.” Being kind and thoughtful to others, we can be an answer to prayer.

During lunchtime, Emma suggested going to the 200 to feed the animals and her mom agreed.
“We’ll stop by the bakery and pick some bread up. Now hurry and eat and then we'll go. It’s going to be a lovely day. Grandma is coming with us. She'll be here any minute,” Mom said.
Emma ate her lunch and then ran into her room to get her shoes. The problem was that she could only find one of them. She looked under her bed, but all she could see were dirty towels and pants. She moved some of her toys out of the way, but still couldn’t find her shoe. After she’d checked everywhere in her room, she ran into the kitchen. “Mom, I can’t find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it ” she asked.
Her mom thought about how many times she’d told Emma to clean her room up. She whispered something to Emma’s grandma and then said to Emma, “You will have to stay at home. Your dad and I will take Ryan to the zoo. Grandma will stay here with you.”
“No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the zoo,” Emma cried. “I’m sorry, Emma. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you ignored me. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not doing as I asked. You will stay at home.”
Emma ran into her bedroom, crying. Her mom came to the door and said, “Emma, clean that room of yours before I get home. I’ve told grandma not to give you any sweets until you finish the work.” She went out to the car with Ryan and Emma’s dad and then they drove away.

High school often serves to prepare students for a college education, or it might be the last stop on the educational journey for some people. No matter which path one may select, high school life offers students the opportunities to achieve a great deal of learning, get to know themselves, or simply have fun.
In America high school is a special experience with a culture of its own.
8 The author mentioned bad news in order to show that .
A. bad news makes people see things in a negative light
B. bad news is more likely to catch people’s eyes
C. bad news attracts people to see positive things
D. bad news has a negative effect on television ratings
D
I was riding my special motorbike this past weekend and stopped at a store. As I was getting my wheelchair off the back, a man watched me from his car and I noticed a wheelchair in his back seat. We spoke for a moment and I asked him about the wheelchair. He answered that it was for his daughter. “Well, do you think she would like to go for a ride on my motorbike with me ” I asked.

Paragraph 1:
Emma sat on her bed and cried for a long time.
Paragraph 2:
Emma and her grandma were sitting at the table, eating when her mom, dad, and Ryan came home.
