I’m a strong believer that learning different languages makes you look incredibly good when you’re in a foreign country and can understand and speak the language. The list below is 4 apps that will help you learn a foreign language! You can download them for free.
Babbel- Learn languages
Babbel is an excellent language tool to help you progress step by step with learning a new language. It helps you learn grammar along the way as you work your way through the tasks and assignments. You need to pay a monthly subscription (订阅费), but this will still be cheaper than taking physical lessons with a tutor!
Duolingo-Learn Language Free
The app has many languages to choose from and will work through the basics all the way to advanced words and sentences. It’s all completely free too! It’s incredibly well designed, looks great and will help you learn, remember and progress with just a little bit of time every day.
Tandem-Language Exchange
Rather than have you work through tasks and memorize different things, the app lets you match with people who share your interests but speak the language you want to learn. You can then have text, voice and video conversation with people who want to learn your native language, and in return you learn theirs, all by simply communicating with each other. It’s a great way to learn with only 1$ a day.

Recently we celebrated my grandmother’s 90th birthday. Family members traveled to my hometown to visit her. This was the first time in many years that I had seen so many of them. Though this was an opportunity to see family, many people did not make it. Honestly, living far from hometown, I had missed many family gatherings. But this one made me realize how much I was really missing.
It seemed strange when I was looking at the faces, realizing whom they were and greeting them with open arms. After chatting for a while, we caught up on each other’s news. Several relatives suggested having a family reunion soon if everyone wasn’t so busy. But my grandmother’s generation was much busier, yet still found time to gather. They understood the importance of visiting one another. They knew time is flying and that those you care about most won’t be here forever.
Today, we focus on our careers and raising our kids. Our extended family isn’t the center it once was. Besides, we keep in touch on social media. But what we really miss are the potato salad, the moments of laughter and sudden bursts of excitement when we hug someone we haven’t seen for over 10 years. Although the next get-together is always a year or so away, people aren’t goods and everyone has an expiration (到期) date.
I left my grandmother’s party with a much better sense of who I am and where I come from. I spent valuable time with people who contributed to who I am today. I had forgotten how much I love them and I was reminded how much I am loved.
4. How did the author feel about missing previous family gatherings
A. Indifferent. B. Sad. C. Regretful. D. Annoyed.
5. What do we know about the author’s grandmother’s generation
A. They were carefree. B. They held family dear.
C. They took time seriously. D. They seldom visited family.
6. What does the author mean by the last sentence in paragraph 3
A. Family reunions mean no fun.
B. All goods don’t have an expiration date.
C. People are always too busy to get together.
D. We should see loved ones more before it’s too late.
7. Why does the author write the text
A. To convince readers to meet friends.
B. To share an interesting family reunion.
C. To stress the value of family gatherings.
D. To compare different generations’ values.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. C

A good teacher is more than just someone who can pass on knowledge. As the Times Education Supplement has found, the qualities that make a great educator are being intelligent, concerned and maverick.
Earlier this year, the UK magazine did a survey of 1,200 educators across the globe to find education's favorite 50 fictional teachers. As it turned out, Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter series, finished at the top of the poll.
The secret to Dumbledore's greatness came from the fact that he “was never proud or vain; he could find something to value in anyone, however unimportant they seemed”. Elphias Doge, a Ministry of Magic jurist in Harry Potter, said of the professor after his death. He added that there was "no doubt that he was the most inspiring and the best loved of all Hogwarts headmasters."
Another beloved teacher who made the list is John Keating in the film Dead Poets Society, who inspired students through poetry. “Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are necessary to sustain life,” he told students. “But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” He also encouraged his students to look at things differently when they thought they knew something. “Even though it may seem silly, or wrong, you must try,” he advised.
As Mark Goldberg, the author of Keep Good Teachers, said, the key characteristics of these great fictional teachers are qualities of "willingness to put in the necessary time, a love for the age group they teach, and an in-depth wisdom."
8. Which of the following is TRUE about Dumbledore
A. He was proud, vain and maverick. B. He could inspire his students to go on.
C. He was unimportant and unique. D. He only loved the intelligent ones.
9. What did John Keating try to teach his students
A. Think twice before doing something silly. B. Poetry is necessary to sustain life.
C. They should find value in themselves. D. They should have something spiritual to go after.
10. What are the key characteristics of these great fictional teachers, according to Mark Goldberg
A. Devoted and wise. B. Loving and humorous.
C. Determined and strict. D. Trustworthy and caring.
11. Which is the main idea of the passage
A. The secrets to Dumbledore's greatness. B. John Keating makes a beloved teacher.
C. The qualities of a great teacher. D. The author of Keep Good Teachers.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. C

In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics (策略).
One tactic involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food (垃圾食品) later in their trip. In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics (化妆品) section: while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later.
Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers’ senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wines went up.
When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $ 10 million houses.
12. Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section
A. To save customers time. B. To show they are high quality foods.
C. To help sell junk food. D. To sell them at discount prices.
13. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy
A. Opening the store early in the morning. B. Displaying British wines next to French ones.
C. Inviting customers to play music. D. Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread.
14. What is the California builder’s story intended to prove
A. The house structure is a key factor customers consider.
B. The more costly the house is, the better it sells.
C. An ocean view is much to the customers’ taste.
D. A good first impression increases sales.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To explain how businesses turn people into their customers.
B. To introduce how businesses have grown from the past.
C. To report researches on customer behavior.
D. To show dishonest business practices.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. D 15. A

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ada looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with an angry expression on her face. “Mom, they’re all little kids! I’m 15 already! This is ridiculous, isn’t ”
“I know, Ada,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”
Ada had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Ada had been to was the inflatable (充气的) alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Ada was older, her mother had found a new job in the city, and Ada faced a new challenge — school field trips to the local pool.
The first day that Ada went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming Ada confidently slipped(溜) into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Ada let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Ada threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed (抓住) the ledge (池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim! Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself in a panic.
On the next field trip to the pool, Ada sat on the side of a bench, frozen with fear. She huddled (蜷缩) with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Ada was upset. “Honey, I want you to take Bella’s swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon you’ll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she convinced Ada, showing photos of Bella with her prize-winning students. Ada felt doubtful whether the lessons would help, but she had to overcome her fear.

【答案】Paragraph 1
Then came the time for Ada to take her first lesson. She dragged her feet to the side of the pool and sat down, in doubt whether lessons would be helpful. Scanning around, Ada spotted her instructor across the pool, together with the little kids who jumped into the water like fish leaping into the ocean. She watched in amazement. Envious as Ada was, a flush of embarrassment soon crept to her cheeks when a little girl passed by, asking her not to be scared. How embarrassing! Ada sat there, with her legs swinging loosely in the water, and looked around seeking some help.
Paragraph 2
Soon Angela came over to where Ada sat and introduced herself. She said to Ada, “Hi, Ada! I’m Bella, your swimming instructor. I’ll bet you feel a little strange here with all these young kids, right ” Ada nodded her head silently, flushing with embarrassment. Ada was astonished to be made aware that Angela had never learned swimming until she was 20. Greatly inspired, Ada now regained hope. She entered the pool in the company of Angela. Several cheerful kids floating near to cheer her on. Ada began to feel more at ease, her movement less stiff and her breath more even. With a grateful heart, Ada realized that she might not be a fearless swimmer, but she would surely have fun trying.

It seemed strange when I was looking at the faces realizing whom they were and greeting them with open arms.
I left my grandmother’s party with a much better sense of who I am and where I come from I spent valuable time with people who contributed to who I am today.
D
C An ocean view is much to the customers’ taste.
D. A good first impression increases sales.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To explain how businesses turn people into their customers.
B. To introduce how businesses have grown from the past.
C. To report researches on customer behavior.
D. To show dishonest business practices.
