Passage 4
Everything Everywhere All at Once, the most awarded film at this year’s Oscars awards ceremony managed to win seven Oscars. But among the films I saw, each one was nominated (提名) for various awards this year.
Elvis: Nominated for eight Oscars, won zero.
From the classic music to the brilliant acting, I believe it should have won in some of the categories it was nominated for. This movie should have one for the best makeup and hairstyling. I also believe Austin Butler should have won best actor.
Avatar: The Way of Water: Nominated for four Oscars, won one.
Considering almost everything in this movie was made with CGI technology, I agree that it deserved the win for best visual effects. The beautiful and mesmerizing world of Pandora was once again brought to life by James Cameron in this second part of the original Avatar (2009).
Top Gun: Maverick: Nominated for six Oscars, won one.
This second part of the original Top Gun (1986), rightfully deserved the award for best sound. Tom Cruise, once again, proved that he can make a great movie and a lot of money at the same time.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: Nominated for five Oscars, won one.
Out of the 5 awards this following of the original Black Panther (2018) received this year, they won for best costume design. Angela Bassett’s performance in this movie was also incredible. She deserved her nomination but Ruth Carter, earned her win.
10. Which film is the most regrettable during the 2023 Oscars
A. Elvis. B. Avatar: The Way of Water.
C. Top Gun: Maverick. D. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
11. Who gained both reputation and wealth during the 2023 Oscars
A. Austin Butler. B. James Cameron. C. Tom Cruise. D. Angela Bassett.

C. They won Oscars awards.

Frequently Asked Questions for Yellowstone National Park
How much is the entrance fee
$85-Private, non-commercial vehicle; $30-Motorcycle or snowmobile (winter); $20-Visitors 16 and older entering by foot, bike, ski, etc. *This fee provides the visitor with a 7-day entrance permit for both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
Your decision may depend on how much time you have and what you want to see the most. If you plan on visiting Yellowstone National Park for only a few days and want to experience some of the main attractions then West Yellowstone would be a good base. If you want to have the full park experience then perhaps lodging (住宿) at Old Faithful would be a good choice. If you want to view the most wildlife, then we suggest the Northeast Entrance.
This depends on what your interests are. Spring has abundant wildlife, roaring waterfalls and wild weather. Summer has it all including the most crowds, so you’d better get out early and eat your breakfast on the road! Fall is a special time of year. Everything seems to be declining including the crowds. Winter is a time of being a bit of social isolation. In years past it was more “economical” to visit most of the park. Now it is more restricted unless you can afford a snow-coach or guided snowmobile tour.
Free public Wi-Fi is available at Al-bright Visitor Center and at some park lodges for registered guests. Cell service is extremely limited, with reception only available in or near major developed areas. In summer, service often reaches its limit in these areas. Yet, it is sad to see the latest generation fade away from normal everyday activities and conversation. Get out, look around, admire the wonders. There’re plenty of natural and human distractions around every corner. The last thing we want to do is distract visitors from Yellowstone’s wonders especially while driving.
Where should we stay When is the best time to visit the park Can I get Cell and Wi-Fi
7. How much is the entrance fee in total if Jeffery makes a self-driving trip to Yellowstone with his father and his 14-year-old daughter during the winter vacation
A. $50 B. $85 C. $105 D. $125
8. The underlined sentence implies that .
A. most of the park was restricted to visitors in winter in the past
B. visiting Yellowstone in winter is preferred by most local people
C. winter used to be the best time to visit the park in terms of expenses
D. nowadays most people choose to tour the park on a snow-coach in winter
9. We can learn from the passage that .
A. the wireless connection is not satisfactory
B. Old Faithful provides a full view of the park
C. the entrance ticket applies to Yellowstone only
D. younger generations make up the majority of park visitors

Can I get Cell and Wi-Fi 部分中“Free public Wi-Fi is available at Al-bright Visitor Center and at some park lodges for registered guests. Cell service is extremely limited, with reception only available in or near major developed areas. In summer, service often reaches its limit in these areas. (阿尔布赖特游客中心和部分公园小屋为已登记的客人提供免费公共Wi-Fi。手机服务非常有限,只有在主要开发地区或附近才能接收到信号。在夏季,这些地区的服务常常达到极限)”可知,公园里的无线信号差强人意。故选A项。

Spring is here. From vibrant tulips(郁金香) to delicate cherry blossoms(樱花) to surprisingly hardy orchids(兰花), flowering plants cover the planet. Here are some places to celebrate abundance and beauty in the natural world.
Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina
Travellers can find a wealth of plant species in North Carolina’s mountains—the most in any similarly sized area in North America. Nearby, travellers find short hiking trails and bird watching sites in the Kjarnaskógur Forest, daring ski slopes, and a local obsession with junk food. The most popular is a massive burger stuffed with French fries, called the Akureyringur.
Carmona, Spain

Passage 1
Did you know that the custom of turning our clocks an hour ahead during the year first originated in World War I By making the days “longer” , the goal was for households to conserve electricity and other forms of energy like fuel. Recently, the US Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act. The bill must also go through the House of Representatives before it can be signed by the President. If passed, Daylight SavingTime(DST) could become the permanent system of the time.
Although the specific dates of the time change differ, many countries around the world observe a biannual system of the time. From mid-March to November in the US, most states practice DST by turning the time forward by an hour from the Standard Time(ST), the local time observed in an area.
Though the original purpose of DST was to encourage the conservation of energy, multiple studies suggest that the time shift has not made a significant impact on saving energy costs. While less money is spent on electricity, costs are still likely to rise with the usage of devices such as air conditioners and computers. Research conducted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has shown that DST time changes lead to a greater risk of car crashes.
According to researchers, ST is much more closely related to the body’s circadian rhythm(昼夜节律) which regulates our organs as well as our sleep-wake cycle. By permanently living in DST, children would have to get up and be in school long before the sun rises—which could be 9 am in Seattle and other western states!
Proponents argue that because DST maximizes daylight, it encourages safety by lowering crime rates and reducing seasonal depression. DST provides more waking time to enjoy with families and friends, or even to get more work done.
The bill is certainly a hot topic of discussion, but one thing is for sure: everyone is in favor of getting rid of the biannual time switch.
1. What do we know about DST according to researchers
A. It can make schools start late.
B. It helps improve people’s sleeping quality.
C. It increases the possibility of traffic accidents.
D. It can reduce the usage of electronic devices.
2. What does the underlined word “proponents” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. People who are in favor of DST.
B. People who are efficient in working
C. People who have seasonal depression.
D. People who enjoy the company of friends.
3. What is the author’s attitude towards the biannual time switch
A. Positive. B. Neutral.
C. Unclear. D. Negative.
4. What is the best title for the text
A. The influence of ST B. The significance of ST
C. The debate about DST D. The histroy of DST
C 2. A 3. D 4. C
根据第三段最后一句“Research conducted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has shown that DST time changes lead to a greater risk of car crashes.”(美国睡眠医学学会进行的研究表明,夏令时的改变会增加车祸的风险。)
根据第五段“because DST maximizes daylight, it encourages safety by lowering crime rates and reducing seasonal depression. DST provides more waking time to enjoy with families and friends, or even to get more work done.”(因为夏令时最大限度地利用了日光,它通过降低犯罪率和减少季节性抑郁来促进安全。 故选A项。
根据最后一段“The bill is certainly a hot topic of discussion, but one thing is for sure: everyone is in favor of getting rid of the biannual time switch.”(该法案无疑是讨论的热门话题,但有一件事是肯定的:每个人都赞成取消一年两次的时间转换。)
根据第一段最后一句“If passed, Daylight SavingTime(DST) could become the permanent system of the time.”(如果法案通过,夏令时可能成为永久的时间系统。)

Passage 1
What do Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, and Frodo all have in common with the heroes of ancient myths (神话) Joseph Campbell studied myths from all over the world and published a book called “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”, retelling dozens of stories and explaining how each represents the mono-myth, or Hero’s Journey. So, what is the “Hero’s Journey”
He thinks of it as a cycle in his book. The journey begins with the hero receiving a mysterious message, an invitation, or a challenge. After crossing the threshold from his safe home to adventure, with some help probably from someone older, wiser, our hero solves a riddle, slays a monster, escapes from a trap. The hero’s darkest hour then comes, when he faces death and possibly even dies, only to be reborn. As a result, the hero claims some treasure, special recognition, or power, which can vary between stories. After all that adventure, the hero returns to his ordinary world, but upgrades to a new level. Nothing is quite the same once you are a hero.
The Hero’s Journey myth exists in all human cultures and keeps getting updated, because we humans reflect on our world through symbolic stories of our own lives. You leave your comfort zone, have an experience that transforms you and then you recover and do it again. You don’t literally slay dragons or fight Voldemort, but you face problems just as scary. Joseph Campbell said, “In the cave you fear to enter lies the treasure you seek.”
What is the symbolic cave then you fear to enter Auditions (试镜) for the school play Baseball tryouts Love
Watch for this formula (公式) in books, movies, and TV shows you come across. You will certainly see it again. Also be sensitive to it in your own life. Listen for your call to adventure. Accept the challenge. Conquer your fear and claim the treasure you seek. And then, do it all over again.
1. What is the correct order of the “Hero’s Journey”
①Return to the ordinary world but upgrade to a new level.
②Receive a call to adventure and assistance from a wiser man.
③Set out on the adventure and go through a series of tough trials.
④Face a life-or-death crisis and be reborn with some special power.
A. ①②③④ B. ④②①③ C. ②③④① D. ③②④①
2. Why is Hero’s Journey myth so popular
A. Because it’s a way to learn about the past.
B. Because it’s a way to reflect on our world.
C. Because these stories are part of human culture.
D. Because these stories are always being updated.
3. Which of the following may the author disagree with
A. We all need a “cave” to hide in face of danger.
B. Difficulties we face tend to be treasures in life.
C. Our comfort zone will promote our development.
D. We should watch more movies and shows for the formula.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage
A. Where to Find a Hero. B. Be Your Own Hero.
C. How to Conquer Your Fear. D. Seek Your Scary Cave.
C 2. B 3. A 4. B
根据文章第二段“The journey begins with the hero receiving a mysterious message, an invitation, or a challenge.
根据文章第三段“The Hero’s Journey myth exists in all human cultures and keeps getting updated because we humans reflect on our world through symbolic stories of our own lives. (英雄之旅存在于所有的文化中,并且不断地推陈出新。因为我们人类通过自身生活中极具象征性的故事,反映出所处的世界)”可知,英雄之旅的神话如此流行是因为它是反思我们的世界的一种方式。故选B。
3. 推理判断题。根据文章倒数第三段“You don’t literally slay dragons or fight Voldemort, but you face problems just as scary. Joseph Campbell said, “In the cave you fear to enter lies the treasure you seek.”(你不需要真正地屠龙或对抗伏地魔,但你面临的问题同样可怕。约瑟夫·坎贝尔说过:“在你害怕进入的洞穴里,藏着你所寻找的宝藏”)”以及倒数第二段“What is the symbolic cave then you fear to enter Auditions (试镜) for the school play Baseball tryouts Love (你害怕进入的象征性洞穴是什么?学校戏剧的试镜?棒球选拔赛? 爱?)”可知,在你害怕进入的洞穴里,藏着你所寻找的宝藏,由此推知,作者认为“洞穴”是好的,只有进入这些你害怕进入的洞穴才能找到寻找中的宝藏。A项:We all need a “cave” to hide in face of danger(面对困难时,我们都需要一个“洞穴”来躲藏)与作者表述不符。故选A。
通读全文,并结合最后一段“You will certainly see it again. Also be sensitive to it in your own life. Listen for your call to adventure. Accept the challenge. Conquer your fear and claim the treasure you seek. And then, do it all over again.(你一定会再看到它。在你自己的生活中也要对它保持敏感。倾听冒险的召唤。接受挑战。征服你的恐惧,得到你想要的宝藏。然后,再来一遍)”可知,文章倡导去冒险,接受挑战,征服恐惧。B项:Be Your Own Hero(做自己的英雄)可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选B。

Passage 1
A lot of media attention has focused on the harmful effects of working long hours. Logging excessive hours at work is rooted in the work culture of the West. From Bay Area startups to various multinationals, their idea is centered around how many hours you can clock at work. It is assumed that the more hours you put into your job, the more career prospects you’ll get out of it.
A new study in Europe challenged this assumption, however. From their analysis of nearly 52, 000 people from 36 European countries, they concluded that it’s not the number of hours you clock at the office, but how intensely you work during those hours, that affects career-related outcomes. Researchers found people, with similar jobs and education levels, were more likely to suffer poorer well-being and inferior career prospects, including satisfaction, security and promotion, when they worked at an intense level for long periods. According to Hans Frankort, a senior lecturer in strategy at Cass Business School, the research suggests career benefits of excessive work effort-longer hours or harder work-may never materialize.
Employers should reduce work intensity rather than try to control excessive hours, the authors concluded. “Compared with overtime, work intensity predicts much greater reductions in well-being and career benefits,” Hans Frankort said.
There is also a range of things for employees to do to ensure they’re working smarter, and not just harder. Beth Belle Cooper, a former content creator at Buffer, the social media scheduling app, suggests taking more breaks to refresh your mind and reset your attention span. She also recommends taking naps to consolidate new information in the brain and help you avoid burnout. You might also consider completely unplugging from work more consistently, and for longer periods of time. This is what Sean McCabe and his small team does when they take a week-long vacation every seventh week.
1. What is common in the work culture of western countries
A. Having bright career prospects.
B. Spending long hours at work.
C. Starting up one’s own business.
D. Earning long paid days off work.
2. What can be the effect of working intensely according to the text
A. It leads to more career challenges.
B. It brings out greater promotion opportunity.
C. It reduces one’s work passion and efficiency.
D. It worsens one’s health conditions and job outlook.
3. What is advisable to work smarter according to Sean Mccabe
A. Requiring breaks occasionally.
B. Taking days off work regularly.
C. Catching up on sleep properly.
D. Refreshing one’s brain constantly.
4. What does the text mainly intend to tell us
A. Working intensively is necessary.
B. Working whole-heartedly is useless.
C. Working more diligently does more harm.
D. Working more wisely brings more benefits.
B 2. D 3. B 4. D
根据第一段的“Logging excessive hours at work is rooted in the work culture of the West. From Bay Area startups to various multinationals, their idea is centered around how many hours you can clock at work.(加班是西方工作文化的根源。从湾区的初创公司到各种跨国公司,他们的想法都围绕着你可以一天中工作多少小时)”可知,在西方国家的工作文化中长时间工作是常见的。故选B。
2. 细节理解题。根据第二段的“Researchers found people, with similar jobs and education levels, were more likely to suffer poorer well-being and inferior career prospects, including satisfaction, security and promotion, when they worked at an intense level for long periods. According to Hans Frankort, a senior lecturer in strategy at Cass Business School, the research suggests career benefits of excessive work effort-longer hours or harder work-may never materialize.(研究人员发现,工作和教育水平相似的人,在长时间高强度工作时,更有可能遭受较差的幸福感和较差的职业前景,包括满意度、安全感和晋升。卡斯商学院战略学高级讲师Hans Frankort表示,这项研究表明,过度工作所带来的职业利益——更长时间或更努力工作——可能永远不会成为现实)”可知,研究人员发现在工作和教育水平相似的前提下,长时间高强度工作的人,健康更差,职业前景(包括满意度、安全感和晋升机会)也会更差。故选D。
3. 推理判断题。根据最后一段的“You might also consider completely unplugging from work more consistently, and for longer periods of time. This is what Sean McCabe and his small team does when they take a week-long vacation every seventh week.(你也可以考虑更持续、更长时间地完全停止工作。这就是肖恩·麦凯布和他的小团队每七周休一周假时所做的)”可知,为了更智慧地工作,可以考虑更持久地、更长时间地完全脱离工作。因此,结合选项推知,定期休假可以让人更明智地工作。故选B。
4. 主旨大意题。通过全文可知,无论是长时间的工作,还是高强度的工作,都会给我们的身心带来不良的影响。结合最后一段的“There is also a range of things for employees to do to ensure they’re working smarter, and not just harder. (员工还需要做一系列事情来确保他们工作得更聪明,而不仅仅是更努力)”可知,作者推崇智慧地地工作。由此可知,文章想告诉我们更加智慧地工作能带来更多好处。故选D。
Passage 2
At its annual general assembly in Vienna last month, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) did something unusual. The chair of its awards committee, Thomas Blunier, presented a breakdown, by gender, of prize nominees(被提名者) and nominators(提名者) since 2014. The data were revealing. Although women make up 37% of the society’s members, they made just 20% of nominations suggesting that women are less likely to nominate than men. The data also showed that people tend to favour their own gender when making nominations-with men most likely to nominate other men.
This is clearly a problem, but awareness of the situation opens the door to fixing it. Although women are still under-represented in EGU nominations, their share of awards is now approaching their representation among EGU members, thanks to corrective measures taken by the organization s awards committee. The EGU is distinct from most other scientific societies that do not make nomination data public, though it is necessary for the fairness among prizewinners.
Some other efforts are under way to make prizes fairer. In mathematics, for example, the International Mathematical Union has introduced guidelines to make nominators and award-committee members aware of unconscious bias. Many prize nomination forms now include statements encouraging nominators to consider diversity. The committees that award Nobel prizes have told Nature that they are attempting to increase diversity in nominees and that the proportion of women nominated is rising.
Prize-givers need to widen their nomination pools. In 2019, Nature suggested that award organizers might cast their nets wider when seeking nominations by approaching networks that include academies of science in low and middle-income countries. This is still not happening on the scale that it needs to.
Sadly, these measures will not make science prizes match global diversity, at least not straight away. Many prizes are based on work carried out decades ago, when the barriers to entering science were even higher than they are today for people from under-represented groups and countries. At the very least, professional societies must ensure that their nomination pools are representatives of their communities. Greater transparency and a wider, more diverse pool of nominees increase the chance of awards rewarding excellence, rather than enlarging existing networks of fame.
5. What is the purpose of showing the data from the EGU
A. To show the gender balance among its members.
B. To encourage females to nominate other females.
C. To reflect that women have been ignored in awards.
D. To reveal the significant impact from gender awareness.
6. What efforts have been made to promote the fairness among the prizewinners
A. Publicizing the nomination data.
B. Widening the application pools by nominees.
C. Introducing guidelines on increasing diversity.
D. Casting the nets wider when seeking nominations.
7. What does the author hold in the last paragraph
A. Existing nomination pools are not transparent.
B. Professional societies must make a difference.
C. The barriers to entering science will not be higher.
D. Science has kept up with the global trend of diversity.
8. Which of the following might be the best title for this text
A. European Geosciences Union: An Nontraditional Model
B. Diversity in Science Prizes: Why is Progress So Slow
C. Progress in Science: Nomination Shows Justice for All
D. The Way to Gender Diversity: Difficult, Delicate but Destined
C 6. A 7. B 8. B

根据关键词 EGU定位到第一段中的“Although women make up 37% of the society’s members, they made just 20% of nominations suggesting that women are less likely to nominate than men. The data also showed that people tend to favour their own gender when making nominations-with men most likely to nominate other men.(尽管女性在协会成员中占37% ,但她们只获得了20% 的提名,这表明女性获得提名的可能性低于男性。数据还显示,人们在提名时往往偏爱自己的性别,而男性最有可能提名其他男性)”可知,女性比男性更不可能被提名,即女性在奖项中被忽略了。故选C。
6. 细节理解题。根据第二段中“The EGU is distinct from most other scientific societies that do not make nomination data public, though it is necessary for the fairness among prizewinners.(EGU 不同于其他大多数科学协会,这些科学协会都不公开提名数据。尽管它对于获奖者之间的公平是必要的)”可知,EGU会把获奖者的提名数据公开,这样做对于获奖者之间的公平是必要的。故选A。
根据最后一段“At the very least, professional societies must ensure that their nomination pools are representatives of their communities. Greater transparency and a wider, more diverse pool of nominees increase the chance of awards rewarding excellence, rather than enlarging existing networks of fame.(至少,专业协会必须确保他们的提名名单代表它们的社区。
Passage 3
Star Wars fans would be familiar with the good relationship between humans and droids(机器人) in the movies. In the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lando Calrissian risked his life to rescue his co-pilot, a female droid L3-37. In real life, a humanoid robot, Sophia, has recently been granted(给予) citizenship in Saudi Arabia. Increasingly, people are ready to see robots as resembling humans. Given this phenomenon, I believ it is necessary to consider giving robots certain rights humans enjoy.
Experts have argued that since robots have now acquired human-like qualities, it is appropriate to consider if they should have rights just as humans. Sophia has a human like face and utilizes artificial intelligence to respond to speech and express emotions. For such a lifelike being that is potentially capable of expressing emotions, does it not deserve the right to be loved and respected
Robots should also be given legal and moral protection as harming a robot may be similar to harming humans. Since people tend to form attachments to social robots, it becomes possible for companies to control the hardware and software to exploit this emotional attachment. There is a danger that data that is stored in the robot could be uploaded to the cloud. There would then possibly be situations in which the government or private sector retrieves (检索数据) the information stored in a robotic toy or social robot. With these uncertainties, it is clear why robots should be protected, just as humans.
An even more irresistible reason to grant human rights to the robots is the protection of societal values. We should stop a young child from kicking or tearing a toy robot apart because it resembles a real life. Giving robots certain rights will ensure that societal standards are set.
Still, many have roundly argued that no matter how sophisticated (老练的) they may be, robots are still machines. It is therefore quite ridiculous to treat them as living beings and grant them rights. However, with the advancement in technology, it is a matter of time before robots are fully anthropomorphized (赋予人的特征), and we would have to consider granting them rights.
In conclusion, deciding whether robots deserve human rights is by no means an easy task, but now is the time to start the conversation on this and seriously consider the possibility.
9. Why does the author mention the two examples in the first paragraph
A. To remind readers of the importance of robots.
B. To discuss the necessity of rescuing robots.
C. To set readers thinking about an issue about robots.
D. To describe the relationship between humans and robots.
10. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. Robots should be legally and morally protected.
B. There is possible information risk.
C. Humans are doing harm to robots.
D. Robots should be given more emotional attachment.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards granting robots human rights
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable.
C. Negative. D. Uncaring.
12. What’s the structure of the passage
(①=Para. 1 ②=Para. 2 ③=Para. 3 ④=Para. 4 ⑤=Para. 5 ⑥=Para. 6)
A. ①—②③④⑤—⑥ B. ①②—③④⑤—⑥
C. ①—②③—④⑤⑥ D. ①—②③④—⑤⑥
C 10. A 11. B 12. A
根据第三段的主要内容,尤其中心句“Robots should also be given legal and moral protection as harming a robot may be similar to harming humans.(机器人也应该得到法律和道德保护,因为伤害机器专题03 阅读理解(应用文&议论文)

D. They have the second part.

One can’t go to the Ice-Snow World without stopping by the Sun Island Snow Expo.

Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina
Travellers can find a wealth of plant species in North Carolina’s mountains—the most in any similarly sized area in North America. Cycle along the 25-mile Bollenstreek Route (also known as the Bloeman Route, or Flower Route), where flower fields paint the countryside in dazzling colour. Travellers can also visit Keukenhof Gardens, a 79-acre stretch located 16 miles southwest of Amsterdam.

Just 50 miles outside of the Arctic Circle, this town in northern Iceland is home to the Arctic Botanical Gardens, one of the world’s northernmost botanic gardens. Nearby, travellers find short hiking trails and bird watching sites in the Kjarnaskógur Forest, daring ski slopes, and a local obsession with junk food.

A. People who are in favor of DST.
B. People who are efficient in working
C. People who have seasonal depression.
D. People who enjoy the company of friends.
3. What is the author’s attitude towards the biannual time switch
A. Positive. B. Neutral.
C. Unclear. D. Negative.
4. What is the best title for the text

④Face a life-or-death crisis and be reborn with some special power.
A. ①②③④ B. ④②①③ C. ②③④① D. ③②④①

A. Working intensively is necessary.
B. Working whole-heartedly is useless.
C. Working more diligently does more harm.
D. Working more wisely brings more benefits.
(①=Para. 1 ②=Para. 2 ③=Para. 3 ④=Para. 4 ⑤=Para. 5 ⑥=Para. 6)
A. ①—②③④⑤—⑥ B. ①②—③④⑤—⑥
C. ①—②③—④⑤⑥ D. ①—②③④—⑤⑥
Passage 4
Social media is taking over our lives: Facebook, Instagram, Twiter and now, TikTok. These social media platforms have transformed from a way to stay connected to an industry where even kids can make money off their posts. While this may seem like another opportunistic innovation, it’s really full of hidden false realities.
The median income(中位收入) recorded in the United States of America was about $63,000 in 2018. Tiktokers can make anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 for a TikTok brand partnership, and Tiktokers with over a million followers can make up to $30,000 a month—$360,000 a year,. They are making more than the average person trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads, simply by posting a 15-second video.
This is mad in more ways than one. Not only is it an overpaid “job”, it promotes undeserved admiration from viewers and a false sense of reality. Many of these famous TikTokers are still teens, and the effects of fame at such an early stage in life might cause issues later in life, such as mental illness. Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 make up 27% of Tiktok viewers, who can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense of self-value into who they look up to and what they represent: money, fame, being considered conventionally attractive.
While TikTok has become a great tool for marketing, it’s important to understand how this content affects young viewers. If we’re constantly consuming content that shows us all we need to do to be successful is be conventionally attractive and post a 15-second video featuring a new dance, it will challenge our knowledge of what really makes someone successful and will in turn affect our individual work ethics(伦理). What about the people who miss birthday and family holidays due to their jobs and aren’t getting paid nearly as much as these TikTokers
Richard Colyer, president and creator of Metaphor, Inc, had his own view on this issue. “It sounds great can make money for doing the latest dance moves in a 15-second video, but we should feed the minds of kids and not just their bank accounts. TikTok can be great if used properly. Money alone is not good, technology alone is not good and connectedness can be bad if it’s only online.”
Again, as a fellow consumer of Tiktok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I’ m not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous of a 15-second video teach young people
13. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph1 refer to
A. Social networking. B. Making money on social media.
C. A job offered by Tiktok. D. Staying connected to the Internet.
14. What do the numbers given in paragraph 2 show
A. TikTokers are earning money easily.
B. Tiktokers are richer than average people.
C. Most Tiktokers can become millionaires overnight.
D. Popular TikTokers earn much more than ordinary workers.
15. Which is the possible influence of TikTok on its young users
A. They tend to live an adult life too soon.
B. They are forced to pay for certain services.
C. They may abandon other social media.
D. They are likely to develop false value.
16. What can we infer from Richard Colyer’s comments
A. Tiktok can be a positive influence if teens employ it wisely.
B. Young TikTokers should be banned from making money.
C. It is better to involve education on investment in TikTok videos.
D. Contents of videos need checking before their release online.
